Drive thru’ A.T.M.s
It was an introduction that took the banking industry by storm when Sampath Bank unveiled the first ever Automated Teller Machine in 1987, a press release said.
Today, a little more than two decades later, Sampath Bank still leads the way in the futuristic banking services with many novelties they have introduced to the banking and financial services industry.
Sampath Bank A.T.M.s also allow a higher ceiling for cash withdrawals at Rs. 80,000 per day while sophisticated technology is used to ensure maximum standards of security, complying with VISA and Master International standards.
In 2003 Sampath Bank took another historical step forward in the banking and financial services industry by introducing the Drive-Through A.T.M., where all that you needed to do could be done without having to step out of your vehicle.
This was an extension to their Off-Site ATM network which was introduced to provide customers with easy access to their bank account, even when a bank branch was not in the locality. The 16 strong Off-Site ATM network proved to add so much of value in terms of time saved and access at emergencies.
The initial A.T.M. which came in to operation in 1987 had only basic facilities such as cash withdrawal, balance inquiry and fund transfer. Sampath Bank A.T.M.s of today boast of being able to handle many more advanced transactions such as third party bill payment facilities, statement printing and on-line real-time cash depositing facilities with cash recognizing features. All these transactions can be carried out by simply inserting your VISA debit card or Sampath Bank credit cards at the push of a button. The computerized setup offers language choice and “step by step” instructions to carry out transactions.
Providing uninterrupted customer convenience at all times, Sampath Bank holds a “Zero Down Time” policy on their A.T.M.s. This policy enhances the reliability of the Sampath Bank ATMs with 24×7 availability. All the ATMs under the Sampath Bank network are monitored round the clock for system failures and breakdowns by the operations team who are on call with back up services.
In a bid to avail better service and accessibility to customers, Sampath Bank has moved to an A.T.M. sharing partnership with Bank of Ceylon and Union Bank, thus providing a much larger network and access points to customers of both banks with a total of 514 A.T.M.s to date. Having noticed the success of this partnership, Sampath Bank has already initiated discussion on sharing A.T.M. networks with other banks as well. Sampath Bank A.T.M. network is well connected through over a million A.T.M.s of Master international in 210 countries and over 1.2 million A.T.M.s of VISA network in 170 countries, providing one of the widest spread ATM networks.

Why does Sampath bank continually claim credit for the first ATM in Sri Lanka, which was actually opened at HSBC Colombo Fort before Sampath Bank even came into existence?
Refer: Strategic motivations and choice in subsistence markets (Elaydi and Harrison, 2009). Sampath PR department, please take note. :)
It was for the common man, durr
HSBC introduced ATMs in 1986 before Sampath Bank. It had introduced several innovative products in the Banking System. Other Banks including Sampath Bank followed suit. Give due credit to HSBC established in the nineteenth century in Sri Lanka at 24 Baron Jayatilleka Mawatha, Colombo 1. Writer of the article must make an correction without misleading the students of sri lanka banking.
Yourright, say that only for academic purposes!
