Unaware of Galle road cavity
A ministry secretary involved in highways development was unaware of a depression in Sri Lanka’s premier roadway that was disrupting the smooth flow of traffic.
Highways Ministry Secretary Admiral (retd.)Wasantha Karannagoda didn’t know that a section of Galle road close to the Savoy theatre in Colombo was about to cave in when this reporter brought it to his notice on Monday
He was however aware of a similar cavity near Roxy Theatre, Wellawatte.
These cavities have been there for months with barrels painted in yellow placed on it to warn motorists of those danger areas. The roads in those places have not completely caved in as yet.
According S. Meihandan, a project director attached to the Ministry, those cavities had been caused by leaking underground sewer lines which had not been replaced since the time of the British.
Asked whether it was money that was the problem that were delaying those repairs, Karannagoda replied in the affirmative, adding that money was the biggest problem facing his Ministry.
Karannagoda who was formerly the Navy Commander, took up this post soon after the end of the L.T.T.E. war in May.

I feel very sorry for this successful and decorated military officer who having accepted a political appointment now having to lie to the public to please his political commanders.
