No JVP Support For UNF ‘Common Candidate’
By Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema
The JVP would not support a common candidate at the next presidential election if he were to contest from the UNF.
JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath told The Sunday Leader that the JVP would not support any common candidate if he contests the election from the UNP led UNF.
The JVP maintains that the common candidate should be an independent individual respected by the people and not affiliated to any political party.
The UNF meanwhile said the alliance is yet to arrive at a final decision on the common candidate and how such a candidate should contest the next presidential election.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, who has been appointed by the party to hold official discussions with other political parties on supporting a common candidate, told The Sunday Leader that the alliance is yet to arrive at a final decision on the common candidate and how he should contest the presidential election.
“The final decision would be arrived at once the Presidential election is officially announced,” he said.
The common candidate it is learnt is to contest the next presidential election from an independent political party, which is not affiliated to any main political party.
Reliable sources told The Sunday Leader that the common candidate would have to be fielded from an independent party in order to gain the support of all opposition political parties.
“The JVP would not support a common candidate fielded from the UNF or any party affiliated to it and the UNF too would find it difficult to support a candidate put forward by the JVP. Therefore, the common candidate would have to contest from an independent party,” sources said.
The JVP on Friday announced that the party has decided to commence official discussions with General Sarath Fonseka to explore the possibility of supporting him as the common candidate at the next Presidential election.

Why JVP is so adament in supporting UNF candidate? I will never support their decesion! Why? Last presidential election they made a decision supporting MR and they worked hard to make him president and they did. What happened to them after ward! He and his alliance destroyed their party. Have they learned their lesson now? But, i think UNP never would have done that to them! Of course, during 80′s UNP did that to them, and we all know why? Same thing MR did to LTTE. Now we are all in democratic path. We need CHANGE now, so lets work together and bring a change!
even if they support no body can defeat MR
MR will defeat himself. He descriminated SF and created him as an opponent. If Gen. SF is given something equivalent to what Karuna Amman got, he would have never been an opponernt, Now all PA ministers and MR are attacking him. That is the best election campaingn for SF.
all these are SF ‘s power hunger statements, backed by CIA ,please come on this page after election results
mr.thajudeen, wait and see what will happen in future !!!! mahinda will be defeated easily by the wise people of sri lanka!!
I’m eagerly waiting to see ,SF ‘s pathetic loss, and escaping to USA
I hope Sarath wins the elections….
the minorities cant stand another MR and family rule. We need someone who respects human rights….we r sure , we’d get that from UNP.
So support who ever UNP chooses. Eventhough minorities dont like SF for saying Minorities r visitors of sri lanka and have no rights. Minorities have no option to chase MR away.
President over militarized his past election campaigns thus he cant complain now of a Military Officer coming forward– he dug his own grave
Mr. Thajudeen, think before you put your ideas in writing— you are merely repeating the Govt manthra that it is an “International Conspiracy”.. which is without any basis… just like the overused “ALI KOTI GIVISUMA” which was later admitted to be a false one non other than Prime Minister Ratnasirio Wickramanayaka!!!
Well said Mr. Iqbal. Why can’t these red shirt dirty Harrys support UNP or UNF afterall thrown out from UPFA. JVP – raskols don’t have a vision or a mission, they are only a bunch of roudies, thats all. All the half educated rotters are around them and no educated person supports them. JVP is a party full of roudies, trouble makers and rotters. These street garbage Politicians should be wipped out. No need their support anyway. UNP knows when to win and how to win the forth-coming elections without roudies. UNP is a party consists of all educated high class masses. If rotten JVP fellows joins UNP it will spoil the good image. JVP and JHU are the most currupted idiots who insist on troubles always to the nation. These two parties will learn a good lesson in the next elections.
Rohana seems to have personal vendetta against the JVP,
UNP is a capitalist party where capitalism is coming to an
end in the world, Marxism & socialism is rising beginning
From Venuzuela to latin american countries with Chinnese
comunism in the lead, Jvp is a Marxist Party cannot mingle
with the UNP but can help to bring down Mahinda, they were not kicked out but declined to accept cabinet post
hastily withuot consulting the Poltebureau but M.R hurriedly enticed the UNP members then onwards JVP declined M.R.s offer. JVP doesnt care of its vote bases, they know
their limits , their main aim is to help the depressed & the
oppressed . mind you mr rohana most organisers & members are Graduates & Undergraduates.
Rohana Godagampala, well said.
we dont need communism, We all know communism dont work well from soviet union, north korea. only china is the one country in the world doing well with communism.
M.H.Sheriff,
i dont agree most members and organizers of JVP are graduates.we need proof.
I am not agree with Rohana’s implication. I think this is the time that we should think in a different way. Still we have time to make good changes in the entire system in our country. Only the problem I see is that our reluctance to admit that JVP is doing on behalf of the country. We all including me also didn’t want to say that they have dedicated all their lives for bring us the dimocracy. Now we should help them even by words and votes to do their honest job
Wonder if JVP can even get 0.05% of total votes. Who cares for JVP. The party will not last long. No one needs JVP support.
Jvp Doesnt care about votes or perks, it helps the downtrodden &
the oppressed, why does the Unions come behind JVP when their
in distress those unions have accuired jobs through the UNP & SLFP they are all henchmen of the 2 parties they use the JVP as
Karapincha to fullfill their needs & spit it out. (not vote for them).
The true stance & their achivements never highlited in any media
therfore the masses are very ignorant due to that they dont get
votes.
M.H. Sheriff , yes ur so correct.
their achivements never highlited in any media,
exactly like the anti tamil riots in 1983( dont give me reasons saying the rights broke out coz LTTE killed 21 army, everyone knows thats not the reason. Killing 21 army was just a spark, but the fuel in provided by JVP)
Sheriff,
If JVP is not bothered abt. votes or perks…then waht is there to dicuss with SF…. at a time when the country urgently needs a change. We all know that JVP, when they had Min. portfolios…bilding tanks….not getting duty free vehicles…..lot of things people know… you dont need to tell us
JVP can get over 5%.
Because Jvp is a well organised deciplined party, which doesnt support
capitalism & privatisation thats the differrence with the UNP.
No govts can function smoothly by sidelining the JVP.
what a disciplined they showed in 80s
Yes J.R tried to eat the political cake alone, by banning the
JVP & puting them behind bars for nothing, naturally young
bloods will boil.
JVP young bloods will boil?
for wat?
to burn other people alive?
More about common candidate
Every bullet fired at innocent Tamil civilians fetched kickbacks to Gen Fonseka family
Asian Tribune has found that Hicorp/British Bourne – Companies registered by Danuna Tilakaratne (son-in-law of General Sarath Fonseka and son of retired Brigadier Tilakaratne) in Oklahoma, USA, had submitted false evidence to win tenders they had submitted in Sri Lanka to the Army, Navy, Air force and the police
Danuna registered the business in Oklahoma, as well as in Texas. Also he registered his business in Colombo too.
He registered Hicorp Company in Oklahoma in his name, but suddenly on Nov 16, 2009, he changed the registration in favor of some other person apparently after he got the wind of Asian Tribune’s investigations into his dealings.
In Colombo Danuna registered his business under the name of Lakshman Abeysekara.

Jayantha is concerned about kickbacks
what about Mahinda and families kickbacks
mahinda chinthana is all about looting more than chandrika did
I think JVP is right in their dicision as If the common candidate is to contest from UNF the it would be difficult to attract the voters of the other parties.therefore common candidate should contest as a n independant candidate
Parties do not have right to vote but individuals will vote. Even JVP asks its members to vote against SF they will vote to him.
I’ll be honest – the JVP is a waste of time and money. It really needs to grow up.
My dear Nimesh it has grown up enough from 1960 0nwards,
nobody needs to waste money or time.
wat nimesh means by grow up is, The members in the JVP to grow up mentally.
By the constitution of UNP, if the party’s presidential candidate wins the election he will become the Party leader. Due to this clause Ranil W. is scared to give UNP membership to Sarath F. I beleive this a planned move by the JVP & allies of Ranil within UNP. With this statement JVP are providing an excuse to Ranil for not awarding the UNP membership to Gen. SF. So, the General would still contest thru an alternate mechanism, but will save Ranils party leadership.
Ranil is professional man.But his first mistake is appointing Atukoralle to secretary & went behind Sirisena cooray. Atfer that SB & GL bring to UNP & cut the Tyronne.
accordingly there are so many mistake
Dear Dinesh,
The clause of the UNP constitution has been changed as informed by Ranil on 20th Nov. and he can still be the leader while allowing Gen, SF to contest.
JVP IS GOING TO LOOSE WHAT THEY HAVE IN THIS COMING ELECTIONS,
THEY ARE PUZZLED WHERE TO GO, UNP ONLY WACKED JVP FLAT DURING 1986,….WITH MAHINDA S HELP THEY GOT SOME ROOM TO
BARK IN THE PARLIMENT NOW THATS TOO COMING FOR EN END.
JVP HAVE TO CHANGE THEIR IDENTITY, TILL PEOPLE OF SRILANKA
REMEMBER HOW JVP KILLING OF INNOCENT SRILANKAN PEOPLE,
SOLDIERS, POLICE MEN, AND 1983,1971 TROUBLES ALL RUINED
OUR SRILANKA THEY WILL NEVER GET A EDUCATED VOTE. LIKE
WEERAWANSA,THEY HAVE TO FORM A BETTER LOOKING PARTY.
TILL THEY HAVE SABOURTAGE IDEAS YOU WILL NOT PROSPER.
still they are ruining ,in the of strike
still they r ruining in the name of strike
Fazal you are politically ignorant, it was Mahinda who got help from
the JVP he offered perks to the JVp which they refused all pundits know that, of course they might lose vote which they dont
care, they will continue working for the oppressed poor.
are u expert?????????
M.H. Sheriff ,
are u expert?
If the Common candidate wants to win, he should be independent but contest under the Party and symbol having the majority of votes. If JVP realy wants to go against MR they should allow Gen. Sarath Fonseka to contest under UNP with the symbol of elephant. There is no time to introduce a new symbol and noody will spend money for the election campaingn of Gen. SF. If JVP does not support the common candidate to fight against the post of president, they will be wipped off from parliament in the next election. Even Prabakaran could not survive without listning to the volice of people.
To defet MR and Wimal’s party the bring the strongest candidate, SF, without any demand. Or play your game once again to support MR and give credit to Wimal. You decide your futiue!
Kumara
still MR will win comfortably
Even if MR wins his government will loose in the Genral election. Peoples Allince will get less than 105 seats while UNF will get over 90 seats. Then who will support the 2010 budget to crush peopople? Fish canot survive without water and Mahinda cannot surviev without corrupted MPs.
then all the UNP ers will join he he
Sarath,
What makes you dream about those numbers? Haven’t you seen the results of last provincial elections? SF will get some votes because of popularity among general public even though his loss. In a general election people will go back to government side.
is someone very close to you bumsucking mr? he did not win comfortably in 2005 nor is he going to win comfortably the next time around cos there is no more the ltte.
SRI lankans are there
MR is on such a high that whoever contests against him is going to be annihilated no matter what colour or party they represent.at the next election.
Ranil must take a back seat if we are to have a better country with a better opposition.
‘We need a strong and far sighted opposition leader.
So far, Ranil has not been able to be that person nor deliver adequately and unlikely he will be able to do so in the future.
If we are to see a better Sri Lanka without the corrupt Rajapakses and his yes stoogest, then we need to muster a good and strong opposition.
Ranil, nothing personal..but since this is the case as proven in the past, please look at the interest of the country and the masses and step down and give the leadership to a strong person.
the prob is ranil is educated and comes from a classy family background that he cant act like a thug politician and its very hard to win an election in lanka if u arnt a thug. true.
but IF ranil becomes the prez, he can really make the financial wheel of the country turning.
SF cannot win without JVP’s support.
LEFT won last few elections only because of JVPs support.
JVP is a haning party. it is a democratic political by name only . by practice in diferent . now they devoiced from SLFP. . they have no other alternative they must hanging after mr.general Fonsaka. MR Wimal was seperated from S l F P but not deioced, they get step mother treatment from MR Raiapaska. he was got sick with SLFP . these people must go after mr.Fonsaka. please do not forget the facts then Mr. Fonsaka was hunding for the JVP.. Balance joined JVP . today withh MR Fonsaka. mr. Mano ganash is gentelman work for honest democratic govt. mr.Hakeem too very understanding politician very sinscer to the miniroty..MR Fonsaka also must understand UNP is the main oppersition pary he must joined with UNP aalso. to win the mind and heart of democrstic people.
Jvp is deviode in itself. How to expect them to worked together with the UNP. They were cheated by their old pal Mr. MR. Truely they will not trust the UNP. I beleive what we need is not holding on to our petty policies, But to put the country in the progressive way. It needs the trust and goodwill of every one together. Let us set aside all our differences and look for common good of the country. We need a ruler to develop the country and not his family as MR.
jvps dicesion is very vivid they dont want to see any body contesting the election just to gain political gains.as well as the cant go for a political coaliation with unf because they cant forget the past so easily.their political idiology is total different from them.so people like somawansa have very strong belief to build a marxist country in srilanka.so how they get together.
the tamils should vote wisely to chose the better devil!!!
I think we have to give one more term to MR as an appreciation to his courage and correct political backing he has given to win the war. The leadership he gave to win the war we could not found for 30 years from any of the parties or leaders rule the country. Will give him another chance this time and next time for SF.
(JVP was ousted from the democracy by then UNP government and they had no option but to resortto violence, but JVP has not done any wrong to the country since they joined the mainstream of democracy and wiil do the right thing at the right time like did in the future keeping country ahead of any thiung else.Let ,s trust them
What we really need now is good mangement practices by the government to provide a better future for the citizens.Yes we had enough elections and if we could stop elections for 10 years with a good manger to run the country we could be the most prosperous nation in Asia with out doubt. Most of the politicians do not understand that the majority of the voters are coming from villages where they do not bother about taxes/vat/ etc; Hence when consider thier lifestyle and the behavioral patterns still they accept MR as a person who cares about themselves and the country.but MR should understnad that the money making cronies and so called chairmans of cooperation and boards appointed by Ministgers with his approval ,ruin the agro and other industries run by socalled government comapnies. To bring in deciplene he shoud appoint professional to thse positions rather than henchmen who does not know anything but the art of cheating and pleasing thier political bosses.
