Left Front Leader Will Contest Presidential Election
Left Front leader Wickramabahu Karunaratne said he was contesting in the upcoming presidential elections “for the sake of democracy and national integration.”
Karunaratne announced that he had been nominated to represent the Left Front earlier today. He charged that President Rajapaksa and former Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka were both trying to outdo each other in a battle to take credit for the recent war victory.
“The war has brought disaster. Thousands have been killed, thousands have disappeared, been disabled or imprisoned,” Karunaratne charged.
The Left Front President added that unemployment was high and the economy was bankrupt. “We are so dependent on India for financial help that we have practically become an Indian colony,” Karunaratne said. In addition, Karunaratne alleged that media freedom was deteriorating: “So many people working in the media have been killed, imprisoned or harassed.”
Karunaratne said that the Left Front Party aimed to “defend the people from an oppressive regime.”
