Why This Government Lethargy?
Why is the government not charging Lalith Kotelawala and others for the loss of over Rs.25 billion caused to the public as a result of accepting deposits when they were not entitled to do so? The government never prosecuted him for breaking the law and the whole episode surfaced only after the depositors who were defrauded filed a case against him.
In the United States, Financier Madoff has been sent to almost 150 years in jail and his family and his assets are being investigated.
But in Sri Lanka Lalith Kotelawala is on bail in the cases filed against him. But the government has not taken any legal action against him. Are his assets being privately sold to big people in this country?
His wife is still out of the country. Those who had deposited amounts below Rs.10 million were earlier told that 75% of their deposits would be refunded. Now they are being told that there is a ceiling of Rs.100, 000 on these deposits. This is absurd because having deposited Rs.10 million they will now get only Rs.100, 000. Are interested government supporters behind this?
It is the Attorney General who figures prominently in the Kotelawala case. Now his appointment as well as that of the Chief Justice is being queried under the GSP issue. Both these appointments should have been made by the Judicial Services Commission but were made by the President personally.
