“Why I Fell Out With the Rajapaksas” – General Sarath Fonseka Explains

By Frederica Jansz –

General Sarath Fonseka, speaking to The Sunday Leader on Friday said post war he vetoed a multi-million dollar proposal to purchase further large quantities of artillery shells from China to the value of 300 million US dollars by Lanka Logistics & Technologies Limited — a state-owned limited liability company operating under the Ministry of Defence, Public Security, Law and Order.
Fonseka, now the presidential candidate for the main opposition United National Front, attributed his refusal to comply with this purchase as one of the many reasons why he finally fell foul with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. “This would have definitely annoyed them and was the cause of the ensuing and ever widening rift between me, the Defence Secretary and the President,” Fonseka said.
Recalling the incident, the General said that in his capacity as Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, days after the war was won in May this year, a report had been submitted to him by a Technical Evaluation Committee recommending the further purchase of artillery shells from China.
“This evaluation had been done before the war ended – but when the report came to me for approval I vetoed the purchase as by then the war was over,” the General asserted, adding that the Defence Secretary had insisted the purchase must go through Lanka Logistics.
“I refused to allow the multi-million dollar purchase as there was simply no requirement anymore for such a massive quantity of artillery shells,” Fonseka said, adding “it would have simply been a colossal waste of money.”
The Board of Directors of Lanka Logistics consists of Chairman Nimal Perera and Directors Lalith R. de Silva, Wasantha Ekanayake, Leisha Chandrasena and Sudharshan Senaratne.
Asked who the members of the Technical Evaluation Committee were General Fonseka said he couldn’t recall the names for this particular purchase. “There were many such committees for various different arms purchases,” he said, asserting, however, that they were all officers appointed by him in his capacity as Commander of the Army.
Given that Defence Secretary Rajapaksa refuses to speak with The Sunday Leader we were unable to corroborate this story with him.

Fonseka On Visit To India…
Asked why he paid a sudden visit to India, General Sarath Fonseka said “it was a private visit.” Pressed on whether he visited the spiritual guru Sai Baba in Puttaparthi, Bangalore, Fonseka replied “No.”  In a lighter vein he quipped, “Perhaps soon I will need to go see him.”

  1. So in fact the Hora-Pakses will be really regretting that the war is now over and they can’t do more of these Hora arms deals.
No wonder, the Horapakses have now resorted to other ways and means to compensate and feed their filthy and selfish greed by other deals and spending our Govt funds for their personal gain.
I am certain the general public from all over the country have a very good idea of what rogues these supposedly leaders have turned out to be..They must be removed and charged for all types of crimes..Not only the war and inhuman crimes that have been levelled against the Hora-Pakses.
SriLankans are very proud of the their intergrity and loyalty. Can the President and the whole lot of his family members even come close to this expected level.
    My foot…to say the least.
The president has always ridden on good fortune and not on good and honest governance..I hope these rascals( to say the least) will meet proper justice one day, some day…Sooner rather than later.
    Sad and sorrowful Sri Lanka

General you are right. Raja-Bros. including Captain Mahinda are No.1 culprits. MR robbed T-sunami money and landed to her sister’s account which the whole nation knows. Now R-pakshe Bros. have invested in millions …. in somany ventures. Where does these money come. All public money. So, Mahinda Mama thinks people are fools. No. he could cheat un-educated masses from rural areas – including vaddahs, he cannot play the games with educated people who lives in Colombo or Kandy. General you should become the President of SriLanka next year and put all these rubbish guys behind bars. Don’t forget about Animal doctor Rajitha and Craco Mervyn Silva (No. 1 thug in SriLanka). All the best wishes for your victory General. We salute you…. go ahead with your new vision. Now-a days JHU dogs are little bit quet… don’t know whether they are trying to join you.

      • senaratne

vijith peterez : JHU Dogs ?
        Really ?
Good, keep it up. Thi is exactly why MR will win on the 26th because Sri Lanka is still Solidly Singhala Buddhist, something which you dont obviously relate to!

      • senaratne

……besides its too early for a regime change. Im not saying MR is the best but hes far better than the UNP which has a very ‘dark and unpatriotic’ track record

If SF and the UNP comes to power, wether SF can help it or not, willing or otherwise, LTTE will once again raise its ugly head.

Do you want that ? Pleae dont answer that, because people like you dont obviously relate to the innocent masses’ sons who dies for our freedom including yours!!!!

      • senaratne

& one last thing, SF/UNP dont even have an election manifesto or atleast a proper plan after they come into power. The only thing they seem to be saying is that either by hook or by crook (eve with the support of LTTE syspathisers) he will topple MR’s governmnt.

        Now is that sufficient ?

It’s sad that a person like SF had to aling himself with the likes of the UNP and Mano ganesan and co.

TAKE YOUR MIND BACK 7 MONTHS AND THINK HARD…….WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO SAFE GUARD OUR HARD FOUGHT VICTORY WITH THEUNP IN POWER!!!!

  2. Dear Readers, I am sure SF has facts to support what he has just said.
If the Rajapakses have any pride remaining, I challenge them to defend themselves and prove Sarath Finseka wrong with this very serious allegation of corrupt and dishonourable action/ontentions.
THe greedy regime of the Rajapakses should be put to a stop if we want our great and sacred country to do well and prosper.
If not, the masses will suffer and these crooks and thugs will be the only ones to prosper though their ill gotten gains.
How can one even addres the masses when you know that you are systematically robbing each and everyone of them with their dues and privileges…Shame, Shame ,Shame( if the bosses know the meaning of such a word)

    • Agree that it is SHAME SHAME SHAME on the president, his family and the ruddy useless SL Govt.
How much more do we have to tolerate and endure all this wastage , greed and corruption.
Imagine the millions in Sri Lanka who don’y have the minimum necessities on one hand…and on the other hand, imagine the amount of money these rogues make as commision on such deals.
      Is this Chinthana…????

    • Nandasiri

Does anyone believe this tale, army commander vetoed defense secretary’s proposal? Who gave him the authority? Who are we fooling? Any comments about the article in Asian Tribune about SF’s son-in-law’s purchase of arms without following the proper process and therefore not accepted by defense ministry?

  3. No wonder the President and his cooked brothers wanted SF down and out..There is too much corrupt and filthy money at stake .
The sooner we erradicate the corrupt, then corruption would also be erradicated.
The rogues at the top, the Pakses and politicians shpuld be willing to be questiuoned, answerable and be tried if need be..
Then we can call them honourable. Or are they???

  4. Vijitha Thalpavila

This is all mud slinging at each other. OK, SF if it is true, prove it. We dont believe beacuse you just say it. The stroy of aquaisition of Swarnawahini is in many of today’s political columns. One of the strategy, UNP and JVP trying to adopt is the Rajapakse’s own many expensive assets which is yet to be proven without doubt. Having “Rajapakse Co” was the strength to MR to finish the war. He had support of every one who are very loyal ant trustworthy. It was a blessing for the country which the opposition is trying to portray as a crime.

    • Rabok

OK SF you gave 100% to win the war – but do not forget the political backing and material support you received from the top . Why you could not carry out the same war during other regims because NO ONE HAD THE GUTS AND THE BACK BONE THE MR HAD TO WITHSTAND THE MASSIVE PRESSURE FROM ALL THE CORNERS OF THE WORLD — Name any bloody politician who is not corrupt or greedy of power irrespective of their color — Srilankans have very short memories – thay do not remember how we suffered for thirty odd years under the grips of VP tiger machine — what MR should do is “bedagena kana eka – oppsition is getting worried because they think nothing will remain for them to at the rate present regime is savouring the pray”

      • Rabok. Most of the good food and goodies have all been grabbed and swallowed by the fat and greedy regime.
Now , you are lucky if you get the remnants and bones for ‘Bedagana Kanna”
Also MR and family like to eat by themselves and if possible eat from others also..hence the current and sad situation.

      • Neomal Perera

Rabok. Just because Sri lanka is full of corrupt politicians do not think it is the same all over the world. For example the NZ PM donates his salary 100% to charity and drives a 2008 Suzuki Swift. He is a very rich person having a thriving business and is in power not to earn money. There are many more such politicians in NZ who seek power to serve the country and not to enjoy any perks at the expense of the country. In NZ if any politician even tries to use any priviledges in a wrong way it’s brought to light, they are held accountable and they have to pay it back to the government. They are a contrast to the dirty slimy rascals found in Sri Lanka who call themselves leaders and politicians. They are simply robbers, frauds thugs and cheats.

      • chula

        yes friend.

there would be 100 SF for this country……but if the Indian government fell a packet of DHALL into sri lanka by Air….where would be these 100 SF………..these things stoped because in here we have real hero called MAHINDA RAJAPAKSHE

    • Don

Vijitha/Rabok…both of you are obviously fanboys.

Just because someone finishes the war that doesnt give the right to loot millions of dollars…

Rabok you perennial dingbat did you know that slain soldiers families were deducted 4000 rs from their salary?

Disabled soldiers were cut 2000 rs monthly.

All the while these clowns are spending 4 BILLION to buy swarnavahini?

Dingbats like you shud be hung

  5. Kumar Emayan

If the politicians in SL believe in democracy why not have an open predidential debate? In this way citizens, media and the world will have the opportunity to look in to the fact’s.

It would be truly democratic if there was one debate on a stage with the following list.

Hon President MR, Hon Ret General SF, Mr Vikramabahu Karunaratne.

    Mervin as the moderator!

  6. Bandara

HORA PAKSE’S WILL SOON LEARN A LESSON. THE PAKSE’S REGRETTING THE WAR IS OVER.

    • chula

      General

sir jst think of u and also as a sri lankan…….before May 18th, 2009
if the Rajapakshes’ weren’t in power…..in this time.

where the General SF and other Sri Lankan would be?

jst think of it other things are useless

  7. Dear Readers
Who misused state fund. They will pay back. We have faith of God.

  8. Athula

Looters ,No shame. These people wake up in the morning praying for how to loot money.Shame on you MR .Tsunami crook. kissing SRI MAHA BODIYA what for. There is another life after this.

  9. Randy Mathew

Every ruling politician in the past made money from the War and the Tsunami. The MR brothers made much more and want to continue with this trend. This is what happens when you bring a village godaya and thug to power. I hope that at least now the voters will use their votes wisely. Apparently their man from the village has let them down badly. One should never trust the SL economy to the SLFP and we have past experience to prove this.

    • Coruptfreelanka

Godaya or urban man are not the problem. Whoever seems to be genuine should be selected to the office this time. Otherwise, country will no doubt become an affican state, similar to Congo, embedded in south asian region. Evident enough that this govt is the most corrupted among sofar. But he sings the song as if he is sobre politico to maninpulate the masses inthe country who are the majority. But I am bit worried because we dont know much about what SF´s plans after gettting sl. I dont want lanka to become Myanmar or Pakistan style in the future. We 20 mio, with the highest literacy rates in the region, can only achieve our developments through a leader with high disipline. And JVP will not help UNP to implement their economic policies will be the other dillemal prob.

      • TRN

Its not only the president but the whole cabibet that matters. Can u point one uncorrupt cabinet member during the past 20yrs ?

Our of expectations are high but lets thrive to achieve what is best for the common man.
One set of rouges rule and the other set wait to be appointed to start steeling.

But general Fonseka should be upheld as a true patriot whatever the politics that can bring in the future.
All true patriots should come together and put this country back to what it was at the time of independance.
50yrs ago the cabinet was less than 20 members but how much they did by selfless service to this nation.

  10. Athula

I do not care whether Sf wins or not. But he has guts to go against this idiots.

  11. Martin Thomas

I remember reading in one of Sri Lanka’s electronic news media’s that our country is spending every day 16 millions to support the President and his family. When the ordinary citizen is stuggling had to support the family within 250 – 500 rupees ( low income group), wih that money he could only provide the family one meal a day. How can we a thrid world country with the begging bowl going round asking money from IMF, World Bank, Iran, China and India how the hell this President spends so much for his upkeeping like an Arab Ruler. He ofcouse can afford to spend, he has oil reveneues. What do we have? why should every single MP who supports the government be appointed as a minister or a deputy minister and spend not millions but in billions to run the country like ours. If big countries like Canada has less than 30 ministers to run the large country like theirs, do we need 100 ministers to manage our country. Who is paying for all this? we the poor tax payers like you and I. These things have to come to an end. Hope the people of Sri Lanka this time use their providence to elect a suitable person who is honest, hard working and act like a statesman and go behond the party politics to settle the ethinic problem of the country so that the Sinhalese, Tamils and Mustims could all have a fair share in runing the country. We shold be fair by all the other minority groups and religions and give every one the freedom to chose and practice the religion with out hindrance..

  13. sumane

he contradicts himself because in his interview with outlookindia he said that he was led to resign because president rajapaksa was against further expansion of the army. it means SF wanted to expand the army even in the post-war period. what for?

  14. Dr. K Kaluarachchi

This amply show that we have to send this corrupted Medamulana Mugabe Bros Inc. back to the 7-Eleven days from our isle.

A 300 million smakers is not anybodys peanuts considering the fact 300,000 civilians were detained in Gestapo like containment camps with even very basic necessitis like drinking water/healthcare/shelter etc., not provided and or own King & brothers are making merry with our public money and this doesnot come from their Medamulana hidden treasures .. if there is any.

We need a change and only the General – CAN DO IT !

    Dr. K Kaluarachchi, Parkville, Australia.

    • Marvin Van-der-Bona

The above facts from Dr. Kaluarachchi is completely wrong as there is only 100,000 refugees in IDP camps and comparing them to containment camps is like Manga Samaraweera ideology.

I have worked with Australian Red Cross and Worldvision, the facts about the sanitary conditions on IDP camps – I will be with Dr. K.

      • KingK

Btw there were 127,000 recently released a few days ago…so obviously you worked for yourself while you were hallucinating on some narcotics Mr Mervin

    • Prof. Mallika Indran

I cannot concur the above comments from someone like a Doctor as we need proof for all this and just acting in rage will not help a democracy like divided Sri Lanka.

What we need is a compromise and nothing else.

As a PhD student who have spent years in Belfast in the height of the IRA struggle., what we need is to work like Sri Lankans and not divided in religion/caste/nationality lines which will curse this country again.

      • Rajesh

Well said, Prof. My point exactly. The day we start to think like Sri Lankans instead of Singala and Tamils, our problems will start go away. Otherwise, we will still be the tear drop of Indian ocean rather than the pearl drop on Indian ocean.

      • KingK

Thats really great PROFESSOR of a billions PhDs’. We couldnt care about your highly educated silly opinion. Obviously you dont do much reading if you give me your email address I will send you pictures of the Presidents son Namal covered in stones and mud all thrown by the IDPs’.

I will send you a report of how for a few months at least 1400 Tamils died EVERY WEEK in the IDP CAMPS. Please do your homework without blabbering. No one cares about your qualifications if you are not well versed with facts.

  15. Dr. George

Acording to Amnesty International there are over 280,000 Tamils been kept behind electrified barbed wire fences. these Tamils been shifted camp to camp to show the world that they are set free. Even Adolf Hitler did not do this.
Kissing the Maha Bodhi will not change the Karma of Mahinda Bros. Only God can punish these Monsters.

    • Dr. K. Kaluarachchi

Well said Dr. George, whenever i was pointing this, my colleagues in Sri Lanka & the Kanga-Land says that I am working for NGO Dollars and Kroners and a man with an agenda to discredit GOSL and its people.

Now. General Fonseka/Gen Ponseka for some in Dutugemunu clan also accepted the plight of this Gestapo sorta treatment, we are in for some interesting time sand hope Genereal will free all of our countrymen from this inhuman life soon.

I like that MahaBodhi comment a lot as a pracitising Buddhist it the Deeta Karma is coming after this 7-Eleven clerks.
      Dr. K. Kaluarachchi, Parkville, Australia

      • prabakaran

i agree with you its hurting and very hurting so we tamils you and me all hate those monsters of rajapakse clan bu what we can do, they going to get our beloved mano the fund collector for tamil cause. sppn we were told mano going to travel by car boot then by tank boat to SL to face the justice, dont we think Rudd will save us!

      • B. Jayan

Yes, I agree with your colleagues in Sri Lanka saying. You all believe any thing what was the General SF said. Please find and have a look other sources and understand reality without mudsling with hypocrisy.

Why were you telling lies regarding IDPs with follow LTTE websits. You must go to SL and find the truth.
Otherwise stop these ulterior motives and unless Deeta Karma follow you.
        B. Jayan, Newcastle, Australia

    • Aryan

I have visited Manik Farm. Have you?
I have not seen electrified fences. Have you?

      • Sam

Very sad Aryan. You don’t want to see anything. you don’t want to see the general’s army running brothels out of the Tamil youths. you don’t want to see the hundreds dying in the camp. You can’t see beyond your nose tip. Thats’ why this country has come to this stage. If you people think that this a great victory, I feel soory for you and sick that once I called this my beloved motherland. It is murder land.

  16. Mohamed

Come robbery,Come bribery, Come murder or even Come hunger our lotus
eating masses will vote en-bloc to endorse this culture and keep crying till the next opportunity comes and hey presto! repeat the same thing all over again.
coming to HORPAKSE why would one transfer funds to where it should belong if it were his? Imagine it being endorsed by the law of this land. What a shame and he and his cronies carry on regardless. Very soon the brothers will
own every valuable asset in this land with the likes of more Padmakumaras to
benifit. Will the Sri lankans ever realise? U miss this opportunity, this family dynasty could go on for a few decades and ruin mother Paraqdise.

  17. suren

Hope SF can has document proof of his claim. Corruption and nepotism has been taken to a new height by the C0RRUPT-PAKSE clan.
The man is asking all Sri Lankans to return and serve the country but when they come back he gives instructions to certain Companies not to employ them ! What a deranged mind ! Needs to go as they have overstayed.
But credit needs to be given for having won the war and for having started some projects, though the bridges that are built don’t even last his period in office !
We may get to know of the major corrupt deals of this clan only after they are sent home in the company of the many kudu friends.

  18. Ranjan de Silva

    Attn: Ms. Frederica Jansz,

CEO, Lanka Logistics & Technologies Ltd. is Jayantha Wickramasinghe. His wife’s brother is married to President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s sister. How come his name is not on your article. Nimal Perera may be Chairman, LLTL but he is merely a name, and not a decision maker. I think you should investigate this and put the people in perspective.

  19. Don

It is interesting to learn that SF disagreed with his Boss(es) and instead of the bosses who were affected by this were falling out SF himself fell out with the bosses. There are a few points of order to raise here.
    1. This happened at the end of the war against Sri Lanka terrorism, and not before that. Did or did not he have a problem addressing his boss Gota Sir during the war?

    2. Did SF’s son in law have a company which involve in procuring military hardware for the SL armed forces with the blessings of SF?
If yes, then there is a much bigger reason for SF to falling out with the bosses who preferred a government agency to procure the hardware. If this has realized then that would cause a loss in profits in black money worth millions of dollars for SF’s family business.

This could have been the more logical reason for SF to fall out with the Rajapakse’s, since afterr all it was them who promoted SF to the military top position, Not Ranil, Mangala nor Chandrika. In fact the news is that they did not want him to be at the top military position. Sure, they would have known SF fairly well to keep him under supervision!

  20. Don

Hey do you pick and choose what you like to publish? Is this the democracy you crying for and advocate?
Where are my comments and where are the responses from reporter or the other readers for them?

  21. TAX PAYER

Mahinda Rajapakse as the Finance Minister and Nivad Cabral as the Governer of the Central Bank are held responsible for misleading 7000 odd depositors of Golden Key Co by hushing up an inquiry into the latter company. Had this inquiry been allowed to continue it is learnt that Golden Key Co would not have been allowed to accept deposits as it did otherwise openly did with the full knowledge of MR and NC. Now, MR and NC is not lifting a finger to help these poor souls. Whilst, MR is busy making billions for himself and paving the way for his brothers too to make billions (in spite of having a so called oposition and shadow ministers paid by the people of this country to look into these). Oh, General you say you know of the curruption perpatrated by the Rajapkse clan and you are going to spill the beans but what the people in this country want to know iswhat you are going to do about it. WILL YOU GO ON RECORD TO PLEDGE TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY THAT SHOULD YOU WIN YOU WILL NOT LET THESE ROGUES NOT ESCAPE WITH THEIR ILL GOTTEN BILLIONS AND THAT YOU WILL SEE THAT THEY ARE PUNISHED AND MONEY AND OTHER ASSETS CONFISCATED. You see only if this is done will you send a proper message to politicians present and future that this not a vocation where they have the license to rob, where one lot has finished robbing the other lot comes in to do the same; no present government will investigate and prosecute culprits of the previos government, because they want to do the same. So, the rot goes on. GENERAL PLEASE PLEDGE TO THE PEOPLE THAT YOU WILL PROSECUTE THE ROGUES OF THIS GOVERNMENT AND YOU WILL NOT PROTECT THEM BY ALLOWING THEM TO CROSS OVER TO YOUR GOVERNMENT, IF ELLECTED. THIS IS AS IMPORTANT AS IMPLIMENTING THE 17 TH AMENDMENT OR DOING AWAY WITH THE EXECUTIVE PRESIDENT. GO, GO, GO ON RECORD, THEN WE WILL VOTE FOR YOU.

When General Fonseka appoints the constitutional council, soon after his victory in the presidential election, this will in turn result in the appointment of the Public Service Commission,Election Commission,Police Commission and the Bribery Commission. The last is the one which will investigate corruption. He must prevent important documents from Temple Trees, Presidential Secretariat, Foreign Ministry, Inland Revenue Department and other ministries from being spirited away. He also must declare his assets and liabilities and request all MPs,public & corporation officials and those of the judiciary & attorney general’s department to do so, as required by the constitution. This earlier proposed 300 million dollar deal will be one of many which should be investigated.

  22. Don

    I raise these queries again.
    1) Did SF have any problems in ‘Sir’ring Gota who was I understand was a junior before retirement?
Could this have created friction between the Army man and the man masterminded the warfare to the winning post?

    2) Did SF’s family have a company connected to procure military hardware (may be software as well) for the SL security forces?
If so, is it possible that taking away of a massive (US$ 300M) procurement contract from his family related company could have created disagreement with the government. After all at a low 10% margin this single contract would have been worth US$ 30M!
If government succeeded, then that amount of savings could have been used for the benefit of the Sri Lankan populace.

Enough reason for falling out with anybody at the end of a carrier, which itself was given neither by the grace of Rajapakse brothers and not by Ranil, Mangala nor by Chandrika. They knew him far too well to keep under supervision.

Enough reason for falling out with anybody at the end of a carrier, which itself was given neither by the grace of Rajapakse brothers and not by Ranil, Mangala nor by Chandrika. They knew him far too well to keep under supervision.

  25. Sumithrayo

Some think they live forever. They amass wealth by hideous means but will pay dearly when thetime comes. Gods will punish them according to any religion.
See what happened to Jeyaraj who collected millions, Wijesekara who fleeced the public. The pakses will not be spared.

    • Aryan

Are you sure the Rajapaksa’s will face gods wrath? If you evaluate the situation, it’s Gen.Sarath Fonseka who has robbed the public of money.
      It’s very simple;
Who benefits when GoSL buy arms through Lanka Logistics, the GoSL and the general public of SL who own Lanka Logistics benefit.
Who benefits when GoSL buy arms through HiCorporation, USA, the great Gen.Sarath Fonseka and his family.
So in reality… who is feeding their families through commissions?
      It’s not “Rajapaksa & Bros”… It’s “Fonseka & Son-In-Law”

      • KingK

Aryan you are a misninformed dingbat.

HiCorp is unlike Lanka Logistics is NOT a Sri Lankan company. So what you are telling me is that if you were to buy a Computer you would only shop at one store?

Retard basically he went ‘shopping’ and the best deal was through HiCorp. So what if they threw in a free printer with your computer? Is that a bad thing?

Unlike the cabinet syphoning blatantly, what if he enjoyed a free gift maybe a watch or a extra set of guns or discounted ammunition?

Just shut up you mindless drone. You dont see the obvious but you are desperate to create a conspiracy bcs you are a LOSER!

  26. Professor E.R.K. Perera

I totally agree with Dr. Kaluarachchi & hope the most corrupt regime of you time will come to an end soon.

As a person who knows Animal Science., we cannot keep our countrymen just like animals.

    Professor E.R.K. Perera

    • Agree Prof Perera..Whilst the greedy president and his catchers and family live in absolute luxury, there is not even a thought spared for the level of poverty and misery that most of the common masses live in these days.
What is this Chinthana, seeing astrologers and going to all the temples and meeting all the priests if you can’t work with common sense..Or is it fear that drives MR to the temples etc..in trying to repent for all the sins and chaos/corruption that he performs regularly.

The Rajapakse regime has been the worst of any SL Govt. It should go at any cost.

    • Raj Tharmasunderam

Rajapakses have proved what they can do. You probably would have liked Pirapraharan to be our president. We the majority patriots don’t. You are an LTTE terrorist supporter.

      • justitia

Who are these “majority ‘patriots’ ” I wonder. Recently there have been references to ‘patriots’ & ‘traitors’.
Are those who want alleged corruption & nepotism, investigated, patriots or, traitors?

    • don

at the cost of a dictator who will slaughter the minority? best of luck!

  36. sandman

This wonderful country has very rarely had dedicated and loyal politicians to rule it. Those type of politicians are long gone and would be turning in their graves to see this despicable level that politics has taken this country into. Politics and politicians today, are of ONE EXCLUSIVE NOTION only, and that is to MAKE MONEY. There are no two words to that. Politicians would wax eloquently and praise the stars and the moon, but whey they come to power, all would be forgotten and they and their relatives and yes men would all benefit immensely, without the slightest regard to the common people who voted them to power or the benefits to the country. Democracy would not work in SL with the type of politicos that we have. No alternatives around who are worth their salt. All are crooks and would put their filthy hands into the states coffers without hesitation. So we should be thinking along the lines, at least for a few years, (risky but without choice) an alternative source, outside of democratic process. This is the only solution for the present stalemate. Both main candidates are NOT suitable and would be crooked when they occupy the seat.

  37. Aryan

Maybe the real reason behind this was that this 300million USD deal was going through Lanka Logistics and not through HiCorporation, USA.
Lanka Logistics is a GoSL company and HiCorporation, USA is a private company owned by Gen.Sarath Fonseka’s son in law.
How is it that Sunday Leader is not looking into HiCorporation or into Gen.Sarath Fonseka’s election financier Senaka De Silva.
Look into these and the truth will come out.

    • Raj Tharmasunderam

  38. Coruptfreelanka

Yes, so long Rajapakshas in the office, there will only be Mugabe style governance.

If Gotta is transparent with his views, he should finally be ready to discuss with media about matter. SF or anyone who is going to go against sky high corruptions in sl, can help the country in this buring point.

    • Raj Tharmasunderam

You are wrong. If not for Rajapakses, by now Sri Lanka would be governed by LTTEs and Millibands.

      • Coruptfreelanka

credit should be given to all three forces. But much of the credits should go to ones who sacrificed their lives being in the field. This should be well clear to you too. Country´s leaders are just politicos. But they are not the ones who faced it being in the field. So in this case, one should think about the profundly who may have deserved the major part of it. As Bush or Obama they can only make far outer decisions in terms of millitary fights. As far as my knowledge is concerned MR has never been an Army professionals to have ordered his army even in those offensive he army leaders need to react. Now you will come with the view that Gotta had been in the army. But he cant know all these better because he spent times in the states as excile and he is just a mediator to stengthen MR´s hand. As many are aware, much of the credit should go thereofre to the army, navy, airforce than to politicos.

      • The sinhalese would have had their tails between the legs eh? You are a joke.

  39. Reality

    Thanks to JR.
When you create Pvt Ltd companies inside State Enterprises this is what happens.
There is a defined line between Govt establishments and Privte establishments. Because they are governed by different laws.
With this crafty senario there is NO law in force its all grey areas.

  40. shiran. meandis

I personally feel that MR & all of us think tht HE was THE only Head of State who could have liberated SL. In the past whenever our armed forces were within reach of capturing the LTTE, there was a unknown foreign hand that pulled them back.
MR was lucky. In ’94. USA experienced the terrorism in its most cruel form, the 9/11 episode. That made it easy for the GOSL to “market” the anti LTTE campaign. Then after MR was appointed it was the massacre in Mumbai. That turned the sympathy of India whole sale to SL. MR was a lucky Prez. When he ascended to high office he had a battle hardened well disciplined Army Navy SLAF & Police coupled to an international community which had experienced the horrors of terrorism. Hence, “peace conferences ” were totally out of place. It was battle time, without the interference of unknown hands. Of course to his credit he did not let up & the war was won. Let us not forget his predecessors who not only had to contain with the LTTE,& in early days the JVP & thereafter, Oslo, New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Washington London, etc etc whose sympathies were questionable.

Fonsey would have signed the official secreat act, that would be for his life time, so he is going to be charged and put in the jail before the election, shame….Funny… everyone says our country, have they forgotten that chinnese are coming going to take over the Land.
Corruption is not New to Sri Lanka, all the leaders do it, only you Tax payers are silly. ask how did Chandirka Bandaranayaike bought the Prince Andrew’s palace in the UK.

  43. Coruptfreelanka

Eliminating terrorism within Lanka is one thing and paving further revenues to corruption leading society is one another thing. If any leader who promises to do his job in terms of cleansing the country from prevailing situation, he can be a timeworthy head of state for the country. If we can handle collosal amounts of funds offered to us as a developoing nation properly, surely srilanka can become the best int he region with relatively high social indicators.Indian high commissioner also resounded this lately. Since Rajapakshas have proved not only their contriubutions to terror eleiminations but also in corrupted governance, keeping things only within their family circles (even appointing far relatives of them as diplomats), they should be sent home soon. This is the most corrupt government that srilanka has had after indepence. Much more facts about all these will be revealed soon. Then even ones that support today will become their opponnents soon. Wait and see. Country needs a leader with high disipline. Not a leader who can mainpulate masses by being that populistic. Masses in sl are not well aware about many things. Before long, international communities will isolate our Island if people could not do the job most inteligently this time. Giving another term to MR could undoubtely be like allowing the country to become long dictated Mugabe´s or Suharthos ´(Indonesia)

  44. Kumara

SF shame on you for trying to divide the country and the armed forces. Read about the luxury life you live in and the kik backs you son in law getting form his arm smuggling. You helped to win the war but you are just a part of the team only. Don’t’ try to get the sole credit for it.

much more about all corruption scandals that re further being carried out by current SLGO will come to light soon. Let ´s wait. Srilanka deserves good leaders to govern the country. Rajapaksha are beyond corruptions. Common man in the country who are under poverty cant be well awre of all these so long country´s media resounds only about Rajapaksha´s war victory today.

    • Hullo Kumara…So who would you prefer as the President.
Horapakse or Noble Fonnie ( who may have helped son in law)?

  45. Nadaal Mohd

It is said by the British that the Sinhalayas are modayas and kevum kanda yodayas. I also am inclined to believe this as in spite of the proven track records of destroying the economy of Sri Lanka by the SLFP and other leftist parties the majority Sinhalayas keep on voting for these jokers who only know to fatten themselves and their cronies and make the rest starve in this very fertile resourceful land. Now the time is up to be very sensible and take a prudent decision. Allow the present mess to continue or bring the experts of UNP to again resurrect the economy under Ranil like they did in 2002 after the country rcorded a negative growth for the fist time in history in Sri Lanka a nd let General Fonseka take care of the national security matters which he is very capable of doing and also keep an eye on the sharks in the UNP so that they shall not try to plunder the nations wealth.
I am inclined towards voting for General as President and Ranil as prime minister. What a lovely combination. A safe and economically sound country where we all Sinhalese Tamils Muslims and Buddist,Catholic Muslim and Hindu all can live together and in harmony with law and order free of white van culture.

    • Very good and rational suggestion Nadaal Mohd.
I also think it os a good combination.
The only good Rajapakses will be the ones who are not involved in our Sri Lankan politics.
SF and Ranil is the way to Go.

Enough is enough of all the corrupt and thieving Presidents and Governments, led by the so called Horapakses.
      In utter frustration, Sarath Silva

    • Rajesh

Wow, Wow. Hold your horses Nadaal Mohd. I am a Tamil and I don’t like to hear things like Singalese are modayas and things. British may have said so many things in their process of “divide and rule”. As a Tamil, I think we are the right damn fools. We fought for a separate state which we knew very well that it is not going to benefit anyone other than Indians. Economically, we both communities depend on each other. Most of us left our country and settled down in other countries. Our children can speak a word of Tamil and their children will never know the word Tamil. Most of these so called Tamil culture programmes are aimed at scoring points for university admission, not to keep up the Tamil culture.
Look at Sri Lanka now. Tamils who do well in education want to leave the country and then that is the end of it. They have no use to Sri Lanka or Tamil culture. But Singala people are not like that. They do well in their own country. Don’t tell me it is because of discrimination. The Tamils are not there to compete. The fellow Tamils who studied with them are in petrol stations in western countries. Who are the modayas. However, I agree with other points that you made. To add to your point, Sri Lankan people can’t expect the politicians to change. We have to make them change.
Your economic statistics may be correct. We still have a big debt burden. We still may have to go along with China and give the major projects to China. It is the only country that can be trusted.

A sample of wastage, corruption and mismanagement !

    November , 2009

The next calamity Sri lanka needs to eliminate is the politicians itself who are sucking out every penny from all Sri Lankans!
Mihin air …. lost 6 billion and then given anotheer 3 billion to satisfy the ego of politicians
40 ministers with colombo residencies claim Rs 100, 000 housing allowance and Rs 35,000 electricity/ water allowance

Foreign minister spends Rs 100 million on foreign trips

Rs 90 million paid to Mr Thondaman to move to premises belonging to workers congress

Rs 100 million lost due to fraud at foreign employment ministry and now poor workers asked to leave as no money to pay them ! But no one made responsible!

Rs 150 million spent on 22 presidential advisors

20 ministers having overspent asks for Rs 2.52 billion ( part of over spending is to buy luxury vehicles)

Govt. unable to account for Rs 1000 million from Maga-Neguma project

SLT telecom loses Rs 324 million in a tender racket

Airlanka catering loses Rs 9000 million last yr from a profit of Rs 4000 million the previous year.

    Palaces for presidents family..
Country’s biggest criminal is a minister.. and no wonder law and order has gone to the dogs

This a a different mine field who is going to clean it once and for all ?

  47. Jag

    • KingK

Donkey Jag…Please relax. There are certain time when the comments do not work you dingbat…sometimes i had to post 3-4 times over a couple of days to get a response. Its called the internet and especially in Sri Lanka it aint the fastest!

  48. Nick Dias

S Fonseka is nursing a grievance that he was not given 95% credit for the victory over LTTE. The victory was possible largely due to the wise political leadership of the President and the astute skill of the Defence Secretary combined with the skills of all the combined forces commanders and men on the ground, the skill of the Foreign Secretary in winning the support of many countries against the most ruthless and formidable terrorist group in the world, and the support of ther patriotic people of the country. Hence SF cannot claim 95 % credit for the victory.
He is now having as bedfellows the very people who insulted him, sided with the LTTE and betrayed our motherland. He is blinded by his hatred and envy. What a pathetic fool! He is angry the Defence Secretary prevented him from importing 3 shiploads of arms from China from which his son-in-law was nicely earning commission. Why is this corruption covered up by him?
In his anger and hatred for the President because of his wrong perceptions, he has reduced himself to be an anti-hero who does not deserve the people’s respect any more. After he loses the election it is better for him to go and hole himself up in the USA where he belongs in the lap of the Western imperialists. Good riddance! You will go down in history as a liar and an ignominious fool.

I wonder whether Sunday Leader would dare to publish my comment.

  49. Kevin Johnson

“An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it”

Eventually all the goog bad and the ugly done by MR, GR, BS and SF will come out with an outcome!

  50. Unbias

trully respect SF. But there is no reason to change MR or govt. They lead to win the war. Many development activities are done. Besides, what the alternative? SF has only a personal grudge, no reason to change a govt. Ranil is not an alternative by any means and its waste to event wate time writng stuff explaining why current unp is not suitable. Rauf and Mano are unpatritics. So, there you go. It has to be MR to lead the develpmental phase of our cuntry after the true freedom
