The war end may make it conducive for the Government to get World Bank (W.B.) aid for the second stage of the eSri Lanka project.

Ms. Naoko Ishii, Country Director, W.B., responding to a question asked in this regard at a seminar on Friday said that the W.B. has already committed its funding for the whole of the country covering a four year period beginning from this year.

There had been no money allocated to the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (I.C.T.A.) under this programme, though assistance for the same has been asked by I.C.T.A.

The W.B. would be reviewing its aid programme to the island next year.
“But with the changes that has taken place in the island (a reference to the war end), the W.B. may consider assisting I.C.T.A. in the second phase of the eSri Lanka project,” she said.

eSri Lanka is a project launched by the Government to take I.C.T. to the village. The W.B., in the first phase of this project committed U.S.$ 53 million to the programme.
The Bank, in its current assistance to the island, has committed a total of U.S.$ 900 million over a four year period beginning from this year.
