Poll Shows Gen. Sarath Fonseka Leading

by Ajith P. Perera (bandaragama.wordpress.com)

Amantha Perera/Perambara

Amantha Perera/Perambara

A poll conducted within seven electorates in the Western Province has indicated Gen Sarath Fonseka is the more popular candidate, beating President Mahinda Rajapakse. 42% of the 2,000 plus sample believed Gen. Fonseka can do a better job. President Mahinda Rajapakse is trusted only by 39%, while 19% not expressing any opinion. The difference is expected to further expand within the next few weeks.

This clearly indicates a sheer slide in President Mahinda Rajapakse’s popularity. The only explanation for the deviation from the higher percentage of votes Peoples’ Alliance received in the recent provincial council elections is a possible diversion with the real hero of the war entering the political fray. It could be possible the people have better hopes for the real hero rather than the fake one.

The survey has also shows the key issue of the forthcoming Presidential Elections is economy. 62% had identified continuously rising cost of living as the key problem they face. This is another disadvantage for President Mahinda Rajapakse, who is yet to show any economic management skills. It can be assumed that the people want a future United National Party government to address the economic issues the present government has failed to solve.

Pl. carry out a similar surveu in rural areas and give us the results.

    • Banji appu

time will give you it soon. Ltte terror is no more there. So sl needs right at the moment is a leader who can gear up the economy of the country but not the economy of his own families. General public will see it this time better than any previous times, even if SF is a not a matured political leader, but he ll pave the way to create a political change being able to take the risk for the country´s sake for the second time. As he manipulated rural people, by jumpling to paddy field after his each foreign visits, this time, even those remote villagers will use their vote considering future – finally paving the way to a GOVT for the economic development.

      • Gayan

Tell me a leader who can guide the economy???Im refraining from commenting on SF.I think you must hav implied ally (Ranil AKA Economic Hit Man).If you leave the country to that ball imbecile there wont be a country called Sri Lanka. Only thing that would happen is USA will ad another “star” to its FLAG

        • It is quite evident this country is in a grave yard economic situation due to the lack of knowledge and experience in dealing with the economy. Im not saying UNP is right but they most certainly can do a better job. Have you heard about MP Kabir Hasheem?? That man is educated, experienced and talks sense not like mr. Dhana Rina Bandula who puts prices up and down according to elections.

This poll has been conducted before publishing the statement of SF. Please take a new poll on the same areas and MR will receive the 19% votes of the un-decided and SF will lose 50% of his votes. Therefore MR will be the most popular candidate with 79%.

  2. Way to go Gen SF..Way to go..
The lead will even get bigger from now on ..BUT..we need to be careful..The Horapakses will try anything and everything possible to retain and win the election at any cost..be it rigging, thuggery, bribery(last time, MR paid for the North not to vote??) etc.
We must continue to get a good leader that we as Sri Lankans deserve and get rid of all the rot and rubbish that is incumbent at the moment.

Any option is better than the current and crookish option.

Nobody will belive this articale. Comapre the last election and reduce 10% of rural vote from Rajapaksha due to Fonseka factor (this is also questionable) and then add 20% of Tamil vote (East). The winner will be the know devil Rajapaksha, Ranil and Magala may ask Somawanse for advice. He recently found soume countries for asylum (He said in his interview that he went for searching a country for Rajapaksha brothes)

  4. Leonard S

It is said that a country gets a leader they deserve. People know that Rajapakse is a corrupt politician and also a person who suppresses the fundamental freedom of his people. If people still wants him let them have him for the next six years.

We, who are in New Zealand elect a government who will take the country to the future. That is why our politicians are less corrupt and always respect the fundemenal freedom of voters. YOU DECIDE

  5. VICTOR

Majority of population is outside western province. Your survey is not giving a balanced view and is misleading.

  6. Savitri

Soon it will be a Spent Force. The rural masses have a different opinion of the whole thing. They don’t read the Leader. They are also scared of Ranil

  7. sandman

These surveys are usually wrong and have been proven wrong most of the times. The rural masses are not exposed to the corruption or information that people in major cities are exposed to. They do not read papers like the Sunday Leader or any alternative Sinhala newspapers. The government with all its powers would definitely get the word across and nothing will change. The rural masses would still be looking at the way the war was conducted and how it was won. The state of the economy would not be that greatly felt for the rural masses. And it is their votes that would count and that is the bottom line.

    • rohan

do you think that Sunday Leader is a impartial news paper!!! Sunday Leader gossip is good for the high class English speaking people who look things through green glass

    • Tissa

Rural masses are much more intelligent than the dirty city folks. Who are ruling the all big institutions, businesses, and the country? THE RURAl FOLKs. They have a choice between two rural folks, and one will win

  8. Gamunu

Where was the poll and how did you conduct and where is the evidance? Go to public poll like lankatv.net is conducting. PC users vote 55% but villegers who do not have PC will vote 80% for Mahinda. result is 70% like Mahinda.

No matter which murderer is coming, one will kill other, the other comes he will put the whole family of his opposite leader in to jail and soon kill them. These both two murderers no use full for this country anymore. These two should be die because these two murderers together killed 35,000 innocent Tamil people and buried them alive for the last two day battle against Ltte. These Tamils what did they did wrong, My brother was at the time at mullivakkal, and he told me ever thing and he has the evident and he is shamed himself to say he was in the army and I am myself shamed myself to say I am a citizen of this country and to select or elect these murderers, and these murderers not allowed any journalist and any parliamentarians to the camps where the innocent Tamil people are still there, but these murderers fighting for president ship position. Are we really Buddhist shames our self. God has to save us

    • sandman

Man, you absolutely hit the nail on the head. But the tamils did everything wrong, they believed and supported ( to a large extent) the LTTE and almost worshipped Prabhakaran. Look where that took all of them to ? Now they are as lost as sheep without a shepherd. When a war is fought there would be casualties and this will be worse when the ordinary citizen is trapped and used as human shields by the fighting forces. So when they operate from within the normal citizenry return fire and actions would cost death and destruction to the normal people. Where were these Tamils when bombs went off in other parts of our country killing and maiming thousands of innocent people, some of who are suffering to this day ? Where were these tamils when people of other communities were slaughtered even in their places of worship, and driven off their ancestral land ? They were silent then, maybe joyfully watching the proceedings and feeling proud of the activities of their “boys” !! Now the circle has done the full round. So De Silva stop feeling ashamed as a Buddhist and stop feeling for what happened. Life is life for all, when you lose your loved ones it hurts big time. But that is life. You live by the sword then you gotta die by it. The majority of the Tamil people went for the sword and now they are suffering and may also died because of it. That is life and that is the reality. Whoever did what, they have to individually answer to their maker.

Well, we don’t need a leader with past expereince in Sri Lankan styles of politics. We need a leader who is capable of bringing about a shift or a new political culture to readicate corruption and curtail the rising cost of living. Over the years we have seen these so called experienced polticians misserably failing to deliver the goods. So its time to usher a new political culture. This leader must be a “benevolent leader” and not one who has a record of thuggery and corruption under his belt.

Sample of 2000 people from a country of more that 20 million??? Really this guy needs to check his brain. Nothing personal against Mr. SF, but this poll is really ludicrous.

  13. Satina Junaid

Despite all the expose’s of the current & the Chandrika administrations and its ministers – not forgetting the tsunami & save Hambantota embezzement if the masses would still vote in MR then the country deserves what it gets. What people do not realize is most of the UNP crossovers could not get what they wanted from RW, but they are assured of Minister & Prime Minister posts from MR. All those crosssovers who win from one party and cheat the people by crossing over will get their just deserts at the next general election. What this country now needs is an unsullied person to make changes in this country. Even a miliatiary regime would be better than a currupt head of state and his governemnt. MR would not have won the last Pres elections if the 400,000 odd UNP voters were not struck off the voters list and the false promises given to Prabha and the Tamils. How can anyone who provoke the masses with mud slinging propaganda, embezzle public funds publicly and utilize all govt. institutions and vehicles and fatten their purses – do any good to this country? A new broom will always sweep well and if this broom also does not do its duty then do away with it the next time. Give the new broom that has provenly saved this country, a change.

  20. SOLDIER

    FOOD FOR THOUGHT…

Why opportunistic opposition supports Sarath Fonseka?

Opposition does not have any leader who can fight with a giant personality like Mahinda Rajapaksha in any democratic election. Majority of Sri Lankans like Mahinda Rajapaksha even there are allegations against his government for corruptions.

Opposition thought they have to use a popular character from war winning heroes and Sarath Fonseka is the best for that. Sarath was ill-treated by government since his attitudes were not well balanced. He is not somebody who has patience. That is ok as a military leader but that is not good in common society or in politics. Sarath Fonseka wanted to double the Army even after winning war. Government had a doubt (Military Regime) about him because there is no real need to increase forces like that. It is already a huge cost for country. Another thing, he has a narrow minded thinking that ONLY ARMY is the reason for success. He didn’t care other commanders (Air force, Navy). He openly criticized them. Further he thinks he is the main reason to win the war and he wants him to be praised by others for that. However he doesn’t understand the reality that it was Mahinda Rajapaksha who coordinated and gave brave political leadership for the war victory. It was Mahinda Rajapaksha who tackled international community. It was Mahinda who got the support of public who tolerated lots on cost of living. Rajapaksha was able to get public support for the war. He got the government and private sector employees’ support. JVP tried several times to go for mass strikes but these country loving employees were not trapped by JVP, it was another success of Mahinda Rajapaksha.

Mahinda appointed correct people in military leadership with right consultation from his own brother Gotabaya. Sarath was one of the best Army commanders. However he was a technical level manager of the war project. Missionary level was always Mahinda Rajapaksha. Take an example of a private company, those employees who have the technical skills do their job to the level best, however if the CEO is a fool company will not get any progress even the technically capable people do their best. Even the CEO does not have technical skills, he knows how to give leadership, he knows how to handle external and internal pressures. Mahinda Rajapaksha is the visionary CEO and Sarath Fonseka was a capable Technical Manager. Don’t forget we got huge internal and external pressures to stop war. Internal pressure came from the opposition who now back Sarath Fonseka. I never thought Sarath can come to a same stage with Mongala, Ranil, Ravi, Kiriella, Mano Ganshan, Hakeem etc…Sarath was a joker for them and Sarath was a traitor for them. If Sarath can join hands with them, Sarath can do any dirty thing. I think real Sarath will be exposed to public in near future?

Now JVP is a helpless party and they know if Mahinda wins again, in next General election they cannot win any parliament seat. So no more Lal Kaantha, Tilvin, Anura Kumara, Vijitha Herath in our politics. That is why they want to send Mahinda home, so they can go for a coalition with Sarath and go for next general election.

UNP wants to use Sarath just to send Mahinda home. After that they want Sarath to abolish Executive Presidency and Ranil will contest for prime minister and he will become executive prime minister.

However if Sarath wins what really will happen?????? ???????

Sarath will not abolish executive presidency. He didn’t even like Chief Defense Staff post saying it is not powerful. He said it is a ceremonial post. Will he like to abolish executive presidency and get the ceremonial nominal presidency? NO he never. Will he like to be just a nominal president under executive Prime Minister Ranil? No he never. Nobody will give up executive presidency once he/she becomes the executive president. Even Chandrika didn’t do though she promised. Chandrika is a quite diplomatic leader because she had lost of INGO links. Are we fools to expect abolishing executive presidency from a hardcore military personality like Sarath Fonseka????

Sarath Fonseka will continue to be executive president and JVP and UNP will start Massive protest against him. Further SLFP will also support the protest because Sarath is now an enemy to them. Sarath does not have a strong political party even though he will be the president…Finally Sarath will seek the support of army and army will definitely support Sarath. That will make this country a military regime and JVP/UNP/SLFP will continue protest and ask for international support too. Finally United Nation will send their military forces here and this country will become a mess. This is the end.

Now our country is liberated and Mahinda Rajapaksha is able to handle the economy without collapsing even in this world economic crisis era. I am not telling Mahinda is managing economy very well. However we should give him a chance to develop this country. He is a capable man and he knows how to put correct people in managing economic war. He is a good leader and from his side what he should do next is to eradicate corruptions. I wish he will do that too if not people will not support him. He doesn’t use executive powers like some other president did in the history. Comparatively Mahinda Rajapaksha is more democratic leader than them. Sri Lanka has become a friend of world giants who are against USA. That is why we won in UN Security Council too. All those credits should go to this brave leadership of Mahinda Rajapaksha.

However the decision is up to people of Sri Lanka. Will wait and see.

“This article raises a very good question regarding general’s mentality or personality. Could he be suffering from Narcissitic Personality Disorder to use psych terms. Evidence indicates so. Look at some of the criteria for NPD: grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and expects to be recognized as superior), preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, believes he is special, requires excessive admiration, has a sense of entitlement, is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his own ends, lacks empathy, is often envious of others, and finally shows arrogant behaviors or attitudes.

Now analyze his recent behaviors and words sponken under the light of above criteris and you will get a man suffering from narcissitic personality disorder. Another famous person in recent history who fit the same personality is Hitler of Germany.

The way he behaves has a pattern and it tells all about his personality. He is a dangerous man to be elected as the President of any country.”

This poll is misleading since it has not spread to the entire country. The next president must be Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa. You all have one reason to give your vote to Gen. Fonseka, that is the corruption. Right? Bu we have more than one reasons to make our next president as Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa. No point of taking surveys & wasting your time. Rajapaksa will become the next president for sure. Because majority of people are brave, not as betrayed as UNP & JVP minority. He is a talented, efficient, effective, honest, straightforward, experienced, kind & smart leader. Country like Sri Lanka must need Hon. Rajapaksa.

    Dear Mr.Gallage,
In terms of the Numerical analysis you are very correct. The government is using government propaganda machinery to win the hearts of the people. But during the past four years the MR regime ruined the country. The Health Sector, The Education ete. The people needs a change, that may be a drastic change. We don’t have any right to steal public funds as our nation consists of over 60% very very poor people. I feel always very sorry about their lives. Today it is even very difficult to have a one meal of rice and Sambol for vast amount of families. With this high waste and corruption of the existing regime how we could give a better life for those people.I am sure Hon.sarath Fonseka is a viable solution.

Comments posted here is a better poll than the one the Sunday(mis)leader has done. It was the West and the Europe that brought pressure on MR to stop the war against Killer Prabha. There are some calling themselves Sri Lankans living in those countries make this type of comments purely on hear-say.

Such is this Mr. Palipana who will need a stronger “PAHANA” and not just a ” Paana ” to see the reality. Advise you to be in Canada itself supporting the LTTE simpathisers and Sri Lanka will not miss people like you.

    Dear Mr. P.L.J.B.Palipana,

I’m a native Canadian, but I love Sri Lanka because of it’s natural beauty. Wow! What a scenic country it was. Although I’m not interested in politics, I must reevaluate your opinion. There may be rice, veg & fruits will be sky high in price. And also there may arise some problems regarding finance. But you must think about the country Sri Lanka first. President Mahinda Rajapakse had a strong feeling to save your country from this bloody LTTE. If there wasn’t a strong desire in President’s mind, then you’ll never get a chance to talk about price of rice or even corruption. I’m an economist in a reputed firm in Canada, & I went through Sri Lankan economy to justify my mind. So in the results, I didn’t find major imbalances, but I noticed higher number of improvements in lot of areas. Actually, I was shocked how a small country can rise like this, while battling against so much of betrayed people like you. I must convey my gratuitousness to President Mahinda Rajapaksa for his utmost effort in saving his country & developing his mother land.

    God will always with you!
    Cheers!

The belief that Ranil making SF the scape goat to survive as the leader of the UNP and becoming the Executive President after MR’s term appears to be true.

JVP claims SF is there find because thay have everything to gain, to climb from the very bottom of polical pit and probably hoping to hold the Remote Controller of the next govt. through SF. SF is the hand hold. Ranil does not contest this claim and he gets his (mis)leader to publish this article with advice to stand stand by what it said.

    Very, very clever of course.

    Very, very cunning.

SF says his statement has been missinterpreted by Fedrica. We wish to know the stand of the Sunday Leader on this clarification.

As you so rightly say, no one but MR wanted an Election, two years prior to the date of expiry of the present presidency. All the money wasted on Tamashas at Templetrees, Cardboard cut-outs, posters etc, could have been used during the two years remaining, for the development of the Economy, which has been in Limbo for 30 years, during the ‘War’

  36. Dilshan

    Sarath Fonseka will win Automatically.

Ms LEADER- your polls taken from WP- If you take Province by Province – it will be a different story – Your polls misled – Ranil and now you are misleading SF -
Thats why SF is hanging around Colombo- He should move out if he has to give a decent fight, Also, people like Ravi- should be out the frame. Sajth is playing his own game selling late fathers name- He should be in the stage -

  38. Lankan68

Polls have a high percentage of error. One candidate is corrupt as hell and the other a power hungry traitor. Then the looser is waiting – Ranil surrounded by neo Marxists, Pancies and other disgruntled elements. What a combination.

Lanka has only one way to go…….. DOWN (as it has always been since 1956)

  39. Lankan (Jaffna )Tamil

The Tamils should not fail to exercise their civic right. They should cast their vote. The vote should be- not for a known devil. Therefore their vote shall be for
S.F. even if he may be a devil -unknown and unconfirmed. S.F shall win

    • loku baba

there’s an old saying;known devil is better than unknown devil.so you people better vote for MR,the so-called known devil.he’s done good than others.

Election will be decided on a province wide basis, if a fair election were to be held…
western province has generally been a UNP stronghold and will vote for Gen. Fonseka. South is JVP country and coupled with the fact gen. Fonseka has the confidence of the southern patriots, south will vote for Gen. Fonseka as well.
East and the North most of the tamil population never have found favor with the SLFP therefore they too will be with Gen fonseka. In additon central and Uva province have historically voted for the UNP therfore will also favor Gen. Fonseka. (the only factor being how many votes can SB bring to the SLFP party.
this leaves 3 other provinces to the SLFP.ie. sabaragamuwa, wayamba, and north central provinces, which may favor the SLFP.
therefore technically in a parliamentary election Gen. Fonseka’s party will win. but in a presidential election it is too close to call due to the power of incumbency of president Rajapakse.

SF would have been another retired Major General not known to anybody , just like his predecessors..(by the way, where is Shantha Kottegoda??Were is Daluwatte??). Luckily for him Mahinda became the president and Gota was imported from the US to run the defence ministry, who made SF the Army chief. SF is more of a Brutus than Caeser and clearly, MR is the nations Caeser, the nations saviour. Colombo historically is a UNP base and this published opinion poll doesn’t say much therefore. Breaking the vote base of MR in the rest of the country can’t be done just by this kind of articles, regardless of so much apparent corruption and prevailing anarchy. SF has been talking bluff ever since he declared his candidacy. His talk is full of anger and spite and bares no weight. He generated so much interest in the media by saying there willbe four powerful minsters crossing over on the nominations day but noiminations day has come and gone but the ministers are not to be seen. He had Arjuna who has been a laghing stock since the guy turned to politics. What a sham!

We can observe many pre-election polls conducted by many entities, but it is hardly difficult to trust either of those. The reason clearly is those figures are dramatically deviate from one to another, even for a same sample population.

However all should realise that the war win is not belongs to anyone either to MR, SF and/ or top ranks who operationally involved with the war, but for us… the countrymen, SRI LANKANS. Therefor it is primely important not to use the ‘war’ in any form as a tool to be used during any of the candidates political agendas, since the danages that could happen in any instances will very badly affect to the whole country in its future. MR is the most and only siutable candidate for the presedancy! support for him and help Sri Lanka to establish the peace, democracy, good governance and development after the war. Good luck all Sri Lankans!!!

Who is this Ajith Perera? He is a UNP Organiser. How can we believe a new item brought by a UNP party organiser?

Country need a leader not politician, so youngsters wants a change, enough we suffered of family building politicians

Hi Guys, I am sorry to say this is an English language media, and there is no point writing in either Sinhala or Tamil. You may think you are scoring an ethnic point, but the fact is you are not getting your point across to as many people as you could.

Lets face it whilst all of us are proud of our ethnic origins the only universal language in Sri Lanka and world wide is English. So if you want to get your point to all the people, I think you would better off in English.

I am sorry about the above comment, Dont blame me blame the education system. We have already suffered for 30 yrs, lets stop it!

  46. Sarath Gamage

This seems to be crazy opinion poll conducted by a lunatic. Sample selected is quite insufficient make an opinion. He has explained how the poll was conducted. Was it online opinion poll. If so, it cannot be granted as a fair opinion poll.
