The Catholic Church And Its Priorities

This is in response to the above caption in the letter from Joseph of Battaramulla, which appeared in the Sunday Leader on November 15t, 2009.

I also agree with the view expressed by him along with so many others I am sure. I wish to ask why the Rev. Bishop Malcolm Ranjth should get involved with these issues, when he possibly cannot be blind or is he unaware of the injustices that were prevalent in the recent past.
The human rights violations, media freedom suppression, unsolved murders of prominent Tamil opposition parliamentarians and journalists like Lasantha, IDP issues, attacks in various forms such as arson and thuggery, and looting of opposition members property are all contentious issues that cannot be forgotten so soon.

To add insult to injury he takes a delegation to meet his Holiness Pope Benedict to influence him. We feel sorry for the Pope, who recently appointed him.

Surely the Bishop could have appointed a representative for this purpose. Doesn’t the Rev. Bishop have more responsibilities to attend to such as looking after the Catholic community and his clergy in Sri Lanka rather than engaging in one-sided politics as in the case of his predecessor?

The Catholic Church should stick to weeding out paedophiles, removing outdated teachings like saying no to contraception and divorce and improving Christianity’s image around the world. Meddling in politics is something the Catholic Church should stop immediately. It is NOT for the benefit of Christians, but the fat cats in the church who live it up while the parishioners miss out.
