Two companies, with the assistance of an n.g.o., has embarked on a project, targeting to teach I.C.T. to nearly 2,000 youth in the North and East.

In this U.S.$ 263,500 project; components include the gifting of 100 computers, each valued at Rs. 70,000 by HSBC and the provisioning of free software by Microsoft. The facilitator will be Sarvodaya.

Tim Dubel, Microsoft’s Global Community Affairs Director speaking at the launch of the project on Monday, said that in five years time, 95% of jobs, from construction worker to cashier, would require I.C.T.

Microsoft Country Manager Sriyan de Silva Wijeyeratne said that though certain parts of the targeted areas do not have internet access, that however was not a “must” to train persons on I.C.T. skills.

    Most of te Tamils living abroad are waiting for something like this to happen. We are doing things in a small scale such as repairing schools through old student associations etc. But we could not do any community wide schemes because we could not get govt approvals.
    However, we are trying with the help of some Singalese friends who are such a nice people. Even they are frustrated by the responses from the govt. They could not even get permission to help the affected solidiers families.
