Journalists Flee To Stay Alive

At least 29 journalists have fled Sri Lanka last year to stay alive due to the repressive nature of the country. The Paris based media watchdog Reporters Sans Frontiers said in its year end review last week that these journalists chose to flee their country to escape prison or death.

A total of 157 journalists went into exile in the past year, often in very harsh conditions. Among the countries where the exodus of journalists and bloggers was particularly dramatic were Iran, with more than 50 and Sri Lanka, with 29 fleeing their homeland.

RSF said its major concern in 2009 was the mass exodus of journalists from ‘repressive’ countries such as Iran and Sri Lanka.

The authorities in these countries have understood that by pushing journalists into exile, they can drastically reduce pluralism of ideas and the amount of criticism they attract.

“This is a dangerous tendency and it must be very strongly condemned,” RSF Secretary-General Jean-François Julliard said in the year end review of 2009.

What can you expect from a government whop has stooped so low even to appoint underworld king pins as ministers!

What is the point of a government if they can not identify even rabid dogs! How can to govt. preach law and order to citizens in this situation?

What is the point of having police and law enforcement if they can not find a sigle culprit for any of these crimes?
