Why I’m Voting For Sarath Fonseka
On January 26th, I’ll cast my vote for Sarath Fonseka. I’m voting against Mahinda, but I’ve also found real reasons to vote for Sarath. I read his manifesto and it sounds great. He’s pledging a nation of laws, not men. He’s promising discipline and order, not a free lunch. Mahinda’s got a slick (and unethical) marketing campaign, but I don’t think he has a plan for fixing the foundation of Sri Lanka. Sarath Fonseka does.
No More Trishaw Democracy
I have seriously considered voting for Mahinda Rajapakse. His campaign, however, just magnified everything that’s wrong about his leadership. First off, it’s all about him, using other people’s money. Transparency International has sourced reports of state buses, employees, facilities and funds being used for his campaign. I’ve personally seen his hoardings at government departments, his ads sponsored by government agencies, etc. He sent out a nationwide SMS, leaving the phone companies to foot the bill.
This is wrong not only because it’s annoying, but it also shows a blatant disregard for the law. It’s Trishaw Democracy. Cross the lines, go the wrong way, cut people off; anything to get there faster. I don’t want six more years of that, I think it’s going to make my life worse, and it leaves no stable institutions or laws for my children.

The shamelessness of this election campaign is really a symptom of a deeper problem. We have no oversight because there is no Elections Commission. We have no Elections Commission because there is no Constitutional Council to appoint it. We have no Constitutional Council because the President hasn’t followed the Constitution and set one up.
This rot pervades all our institutions and makes life unpredictable and hard. That’s why I was pumped to read that Fonseka’s first act will be to reactivate the 17th Amendment, appoint the Constitutional Council and set up Independent Commissions. He will also dissolve the jumbo cabinet, dissolve parliament and amend the Emergency Regulations. Then he’ll try to amend the Constitution to abolish the Executive Presidency. It’s a clean sweep, and I think it’s about time.
No More Status Quo
Mahinda is basically saying, ‘hey, trust me, I won the war, have some lunch.’ I like a united country and I like lunch, but that’s not enough. This country has serious structural problems and I think someone from no party could be the one to fix them.
Mahinda can give development projects, but he’s done nothing to create the institutions and laws that make development replicable. That, I think, is real growth. Mahinda can give us fish from China or wherever, but if Sarath cleans up the government then we’ll be able to fish for ourselves.
I’ve had my qualms because I’ve heard that Sarath can be vindictive and petty, but I’ve also heard that once he puts his mind to a task, he gets it done. If he can do half of what he states in his manifesto I think we’ll be in great shape. The constitutional amendment is hard, but he can certainly appoint the Constitutional Council and toss the jumbo cabinet on day one.
These may seem like procedural things, but I think that they are the foundation for a healthy and prosperous country. If we have law, we have order. If we have order, we have opportunity for all. If we have opportunity for all then the country will develop better.
Campaign signs
If there’s one thing this campaign has showed me, it is that Mahinda is a master of looking good while being bad. In fact, he will do bad, he will break the law, in order to make himself look good. I don’t think Mahinda is concerned with fixing the foundation at all, he just wants to win. He’ll put a bunch of posters on top of the crumbling mess, but the rot will remain the same.
I, however, would like to fix the foundation, so I’m voting for Sarath Fonseka. I think he can do it. We’ve lived for too long in a trishaw democracy which is unsafe and annoying for everyone. I think we need some discipline and order. Sarath Fonseka has pledged to be a president who follows the law of the land. One would think that’s normal, but it’s actually extraordinary. That’s why I’m voting for Sarath Fonseka. I hope you do too.

We had sweet talking politicians who did all but nothing like their promises. So MR is just from the same breed. Talks something. Does only for the family. May be we want someone different. Rohana, frankly do you thing that it is MR who is claiming the “sole credit of victory”. For me it is SF who foolishly say that it is he and army who defeated LTTE. Even he was foolish to say that every president in the past provided required political leadership to defeat war, but it is our forces failure that we couldn’t do it before. He even tried to attribute the credit to CBK saying that it is she who purchased most of the weapons. Further he was dumb enough to say that CBK had the desire to make him the Commander of Army (remember he had only 12 days to retire when MR came to power. (if you need proofs for them, check SF’s interviews and talks). So, for me, SF is not only trying to claim the “sole credit”, but also trying to give the credit who didn’t do anything.
It’s ok that you are going to vote SF for some reasons, but don’t loose your mind.

If he wins and you were wrong about him (and what I’m thinking about him is right), you will not be able to stay in Sri Lanka and write “Why I’m not voting for SF”. Good Luck for both of us.

We are looking for Democracy, law and order ,peace, human/civic rights for Sri Lanka , Do we honestly have this ??, Journlists are killed in broad day light, hence others have to flee the country,minorities IDp’s ( tamils ) treated inhumanly, cost of living is Sky rocketing,, corruption escalating, Economy plunging to unimagined depths , ..If you analyze .,MR Goverment has done nothing to justify their his -relection, even the projects they have done it is totally mismanaged and created room for corruption etc,, ONLY…. And the most grave situation is after another 6 yearsof MR, even whatever bit of freedom we have will be totally vanish and may be there will not be chance for Democrasy again, hence this may be the last chance to Salvage our country from the total Ruins and disaster..

Whey I am not voting for Fonseka
Fonseka doesn’t have his own vision, He follwed others, his all vision Makers are UNP, JVP, Hakim, Mano Ganasaon, And R sambanthan.
Can we trust their visions are favorable for country, as past experience root causes for these all exiting problems are UNP (JR – Premadasa and Chandrika) Visions? They not gave real solution to Establish democracy, peace, and the development I Sri Lanka that’s what we are suffering today. Now RW, and His subordinate cams and laying to people they can line up this country for Democracy, peace and development,
But see the last 4 year , 30 years war ended, now we can established long lasting Pease if can give correct political solution to this ethic problems. And we should change the 78 Constitution to suit the percent Sri Lanka , and bring the political Stability to nation Its will automatically country will moved forward and developed in very near future,
Just look at the country Now, Lot of Big development projects on process, in last 30 years we never experience in any new international port or Air port construction in Sri Lanka, but during past 4 years those are on process, high ways, new power plants and lot of in far structure development in Sri Lanka we are sure if we continued like this development is not far away from us we can achieved very fast.
02. High salary increments
Fonseka given promise to increase salary by minimum of Rs 10000. Just image when he increases salary like that what will happen to our Industry. How manufactures cope this exes cost of production? Due to high cost of production our product going to be more expensive in world so hove we do International trading. We are sure we are loosing our major market product like tea, rubber, garments and other labor intensive industries very badly and result we will lost our major market shares in world market. As a person working for local manufacturing company we should protect our industry to forward our country front.
03. Given priority to the agendas of Small political parties how base on Ethic, religion and other unethical purpose.
As a example Due to TNA Discussion had with Fonseka he has given oath to consider TNA demands Like Gathering North and East provincial, Self determination power for North East province, Release LTTE suspects Under common excuse, . Removing executive presidency ship,
Executive Presidency ship is in needed for country like Sri Lanka which consists with multinational. I agreed to reduce existing executive powers but it should be there because our parliamentary system is not so powerful to implement policy for country betterment.
As Example beating LTTe terrariums with the executive power of presidency.

But that does not mean what every Tom, Dick & Harry tell are correct and logical. People who are unable to understand contradictions in their own opinions also have voting rights in this country, thanks to democracy. The issue is they are the people who elect leaders.

Indeed! Sri Lanka needs an Executive Presidency but not with such vast powers. It is good to have an EP who doesn’t belong to a party and only belongs to the Nation simply to protect the Nation and it’s wealth. This is the best opportunity. My dream SF becomes the EP and changes the constitution. One important matter in the new constitution should be that the moment a person announces his intention to take part in the race for EP, he/she must become an independant – should not belong to any party. This is the status. The no of Modayos have increased during MR days. Luckily we had SF to handle the war. MR simply allowed SF to take care of the war and he was busy with his whole family members (brothers, cousins and in-laws) to accumulate wealth. Yes! SF lead all the war front alone. Navy, Air Force, STF and Police did nothing. Hon. Rani, Mangala and Rauf Hakeem handled all international influences smartly. Norway helped them a great deal. TNA advised on how to defeat LTTE. JVP handled all internal matters swiftly. So that’s how our heros, I say it again, Heros, defeated LTTE. Mahinda must go home because he appointed a person who was due to retire as his army commander. Above all he should go home as he ended a terrorist war which had been lasting for more than 30 years. Gotabaya and Basil should be hanged as they are helping Mahinda in ending this war. We are descendants of the great looter VIJAYA and the great traitor KUWENI, SINHALESE. We know what is gratitude!

A disciplined rule like military rule is not bad for the country. But SF, RW, TNA and JVP do not have that discipline. TNA could not stand up to LTTE. Others will never stand up to Indians and the western countries. Only MR will be able to tackle these countries. SF can’t go and have a military operation in India or Western countries (like he did to Tamils – even that with the help of MR).

We are not angry with MR , But what we are telling is people around him has messed up.. Look at Mervin De Silva he is full of thuggery, Health, Education and other ministries are not performing upto satisfaction, no control in prices of essential items, COL sky rocketing, no democracy, Jounalist are killed in Broad-daylight, Rupavahini and ITN used for Government propaganda and mud slinging, ( the more they do , the more we get hardened to fight against this), wide spread corruption in projects they do..

The international political envirnment helped the MR brothers. India and China were given 100% support to the Government. infact the India is the one wanted to finished the LTTE. even MR told this once. that shows who ever was the president on that time would have done the same thing. If MR really cares about our soldiers and country, he would not have call for this election. this election is unnecessory now. Under the topic :Green Lanka for a sustainable future it is stated that the oceans will be protected and under the topic Wealth of the Seas for the country’s prosperity : there is a promise to introduce more multi day trawlers and mother ships , even though subsidized fuel will be offered to small scale fishermen they will have no chance against larger trawlers. What will happen is we will destroy our inshore and economic zone fisheries and steal fish from countries such as Maldives, Somalia and Austarlia. It is obveous that our seas will be overfished for the privilage few who have large scale fishing operations there is no reference to creating marine reserves we devote over 25% of land area to Wildlife sanctuaries and less than 1% to marine sanctuaries. I would just like to comment on one term you have used – trishaw democracy. Nice phrase you have coined.
This reminds me of how the UNP bungled at the Colombo Municipal Council elections and then put forward an outsider, a trishaw driver, thinking he would win, resign and then make way for a UNP-er. Don’t you think UNP’s present strategy is in the same vein ? Isn’t this insulting the intelligence of people ?

Why Tamils should vote for Sarath Fonseka in the Presidential Election
I see five and only five options available for the Tamils of Sri Lanka in the forthcoming Presidential election.
a) Vote for Sarath Fonseka
b) Vote for Mahinda Rajapaksha
c) Vote for the Tamil candidate
d) Vote for anyone among the rest (eg. left candidates who did raise a voice for Tamil rights)
e) Refrain from voting
Let us see the possible outcome of each bottom up.
OPTION 1: REFRAIN FROM VOTING
This was what the Tamils of North did in 2005. Even without LTTE influence, most had reasons to boycott elections. With LTTE reluctant to resume peace talks, from their perspective a vote for Ranil Wickremasinghe did not necessarily bring a new hope.
Now, the environment is different. LTTE is no more. (Just assume Rajapaksa s thugs do not play any dirty games on January 26), the NorthEast Tamils have all the right to abstain like in 2005, but why? That will not serve any useful purpose, unless if one prefers anarchy.
OPTION 2: VOTE FOR ANYONE AMONG THE REST
Hardly makes sense. None of them will get enough to be seen as a protest vote. Voting Wickramabahu Karunaratne, Siritunga Jayasuriya or Wije Dias to show gratitude is fine, (These are three rare Sinhalese gentlemen who fought for Tamil rights throughout their lives.) but after two weeks nobody will remember their votes. (Less than 0.1%). If protest is what you want, make sure that it is clearly seen and felt.
OPTION 3: VOTE FOR THE TAMIL CANDIDATE
Why should Tamils vote for a Sinhalese when there is a Tamil candidate?
Let me tell why. Even if the entire Tamil population votes for Sivajilingam he will get not more than 10-15%. (This is highly unlikely More than 90% Colombo Tamils back UNP. Even without Thonda, sizable percentage of upcountry Tamils too will follow suit.) So what? It will not make Sivajilingam the President. Doing so will surely show the Tamils strength but for what? Can we gain anything from that?
Isn t this the time to vote on larger political issues rather than on ethnicity?
By the way, Tamil National Alliance (TNA), the largest Tamil party has not endorsed the candidacy of their former colleague Sivajilingam. Instead they have decided to support Sarath Fonseka. Of course, it is not a perfect choice for the Tamils but it is the best among the available.
In the Presidential Election of 1982, the only one so far to have a serious Tamil candidate, G.G. Ponnambalam Jnr. (Kumar) got only 40% (87,263 votes) from Jaffna district while the SLFP candidate Hector Kobbekaduwa was not too behind. (35% and 77,300 votes) Why Jaffna Tamils voted Kobbekaduwa, whom they have hardly heard about? It could have been partially a protest vote, but more importantly a reflection Jaffna Tamils did well under the control regime of Sirima Bandaranaike. They vote on issues, not on people or ethnicity.
That is what we need. Tamils should vote on principles rather than ethnicity. Who will address their day to day problems? (We have come a long way since the Sinhalese governments could ignore our pressing issues like they did in the past.) In terms of economy and rights Sarath Fonseka certainly offers a better package to Tamils than anyone else in the list.
OPTION 4: VOTE FOR MAHINDA RAJAPAKSA
This sounds more like a joke. Why should a Tamil vote for Rajapaksa? Or, for that matter why should anyone vote for this corrupt opportunistic dictator whose only interest is himself and family? Do we want a Zimbabwe here? Can any self respecting individual endorse the re-election of Rajapaksa who shamelessly violated the human rights and the constitution? Have we forgotten white vans? Have we forgotten Karuna hijacking Colombo Tamils for kappam ? Have we forgotten how his brother (Basil) called the Indian (estate) Tamil leader as Para Demala? Have we forgotten how the Tamils from lodges were evicted? Have we forgotten the illegal detention of IDPs and not permitting anybody to visit them? Have we forgotten how he suppressed the media and abducted, assaulted, murdered and arrested (for life) the media personal who spoke for the innocent Tamils? How can a Tamil vote for such a person?
Rajapaksa is also the candidate of the extreme Sinhalese the Jathika Hela Urumaya types, who think the entire country belongs only to Sinhalese Buddhists and everyone else (including Sinhalese Catholics) live as second class citizens. He doesn t even represent the moderate Sinhalese. Why should anyone expect him to represent Tamils?
Sarath Fonseka, on the other hand is the only candidate who represent the minorities. See the people who stand with him. We still have a long way to go to win an acceptable political solution to ethnic issue and Tamil grievances, but that will happen only if Sarath Fonseka comes into power. Otherwise the road will be closed forever.
OPTION 5: VOTE FOR SARATH FONSEKA
1. HE IS CLEVER: Sarath Fonseka started at the lowest ranks of the army and rose to the very top.
2. HE IS HONEST: Having led the army when it did procurements of unprecedented levels, Sarath Fonseka could have made fortunes for seven more generations, even with 1% cuts. He did not. All he owned at retirement were a 15 perch land at Bokundara, Piliyandala with a house that cost LKR 1.2 million for construction, a Mercedes Benz, and LKR 641,000 in bank. His wife has bank balances of LKR 23,307 and USD 2,952 and jewelry worth a little more than LKR 1.6 million.
3. His INTENTIONS ARE NOT TO SERVE HIS FAMILY: Let us not kid ourselves. Why Rajapaksa wants power? To make his family grew further bigger and more powerful. Perhaps he wants to make his family the richest in South Asia. Aren t we tired of this kind of petty politics? Isn t this the time to give a chance for somebody who thinks about the country before himself?
4. HE REPRESENTS A NATION, NOT A SINGLE RACE: Can Rajapaksa ever say he represents Tamils, or in that case even Muslims? Rajapaksa s JHU supported Peoples Alliance represents only the extreme Sinhala Buddhists not even moderate Sinhalese. On the contrary, Sarath Fonseka s United National Front, true to its name, represents all ethnic communities at the top level. He will be the only leader capable of uniting this divided land.
5. HE IS ABOVE POLITICS: Unlike Rajapaksa, who is still very much within the political game (and thus not approved by nearly half of the country) Sarath Fonseka is above politics. He is not a candidate of this party or that party.
Finally, the bitterness Tamils are having with Sri Lanka Army, Whatever they are, I frankly think this is the time to bury the hatchet and forget differences. Sarath Fonseka was a military officer who did his job well. True, Sarath Fonseka, just like Rajapaksa, primarily represent Sinhalese Buddhists and he also once claimed the country belongs to Sinhala-Buddhists but today he has realized the fact. Given his team I firmly believe he will do more for Tamil interests than Rajapaksa or any other previous leaders. What matters is future and not past.
Let the entire Tamils of Sri Lanka vote for SARATH FONSEKA on the 26th of January.

Cholan, Please don’t become the “Tamil joker” as SF said about TN politicians. Can you really say he is honest? He did u-turn on every thing he said. He did a u-turn on the comments made to National post (even though he was right to say it). He made u-turn on killing the LTTE terrorists (even though it was right. I will reserve my commentsas to whom I vote. But, note carefully. SF sudenly visited his hometowns Ambalangoda & Nalluruwa in Panadura after long time, since he is contesting. I haven’t seen him at those places before. Even to see his parents, sisters, brothers oftenly at Panadura. But, MR had always visited to the hometown, parents, etc. Who is more people family and who is isolated.

At the risk of SF supporters calling me names (like SF that’s all they do devoid of policies) can you name me one country where an Army General has taken charge by the ballot box or by force and has been successful. There has been a few disgruntled Generals who have ruined their countries like Pinochet, Musharraf, Zia ul Haq, Galtieri etc. The Generals policies are more in tune with Hitler’s. He said Germany belonged to the Aryan race and the General has said Sri Lanka belongs to the Sinhalese race.

Last time(2005) i went to the polling booth but my name not appeared. even I produced my ID was not allowed me to vote. I was serving far away from my home town and the reason might be that. I don’t know who is responsible for that. I believe that our house didn’t care in Elections.

I respect your right to vote for Sarath Fonseka but to vote for him for all the wrong reasons is worse than not voting. Sarath Fonseka’s commitment to Sri Lanka is as thin as the paper his Green Card is written on. If elected, he would be the first President to be jailed whilst in office for his illegal activities from shady procurement of supplies to rape and molestations to war crimes. He is only the darling of the West because he could be manipulated while MR stood up to them – he secured Sri Lankans the dignity they deserved.
