Bhumiputhra & Prosperity

Malaysia’s Bhumiputhra policy encourages the private sector to reserve certain job quotas for the Malays and indigenous tribes which form over 50% of Malaysia’s population.

The rest comprises the Chinese which consists of more than 40% of Malaysia’s population, and the balance Indians.

The Bhumiputhra policy of partiality towards the Malays and the country’s indigenous tribes, most of whom have now joined the mainstream in Malaysia, extends to the public sector and to finance-such as to obtain a bank loan, that favour the “sons of the soil” as well.

Under the Bhumiputhra policy, multi-national corporations that wish to exploit the country’s oil and gas reserves, have to form a company, whose majority stake will have to be owned by a Bhumiputhra, generally Petronas, the Malaysian Government owned oil and gas company. Sixty per cent of Petronas’ 37,000 strong workforce are Malays. The requirement to tie-up with a Bhumiputhra company is also applicable to the power industry.

However, this has not prevented some of Malaysia’s minorities from forging ahead despite these vicissitudes.

For instance Ananda Krishnan of Sri Lankan Tamil origin is Malaysia’s richest man. His business empire encompasses telecoms, T.V., radio and satellite broadcasting, to operating cinemas. One of Krishanan’s companies also owns a near 50% stake in Sri Lanka Telecom (S.L.T.).

But over a 50% stake in S.L.T. is still owned by the Government of Sri Lanka and its agents.

Another member of Malaysia’s minority group who has made good is Chinese Lim Kok Thay, whose father Lim Goh Tong founded the Genting Group of companies, comprising a total of six hotels with 10,000 rooms, an entertainment park inclusive of casinos (with similar operations in Manila and Singapore) and Tony Fernandez-of Indian origin, who runs Air Asia, a successful budget airline, out of Malaysia.

Without Bhumiputhra, Prosperity In Sri Lanka is Large slices or whole slices of the leading business houses been owned by the so called oppressed minority race. To name a few; Food City, Majestic City, Ceylon Theatres, MTV, M Entertainment, SL Telecom, Asbestos Cement, Sun Match, Various transport companies, Star class hotels. The Colombo Wholesale market, The Largest chains of Gold Jewellery business in Sea Street, Most of the Apartment complexes in Colombo 6, Major Harware Trading Houses and the list goes on. But what a fiasco we have in Sri Lanka by just introducing only a Bhumiputhra language!

This what I have been writing. It is not the Tamils who need equal rights. The Singhalese are the one need the equal rights, let alone Bumiputra policy. Singhalese elect the presindents and MPs. Then they go hungry, as usual. But Tamils don’t care about who rules.
You have to hand it to the Tamils. They are great survivers. They will buy anyone for their own benefit. In Sri Lanka in particular, they also want the slice of the political power.
Even now, Jaffna is the richest region in Sri Lanka. That is why Stock exchange wants to open a branch there. Whether Tamils will invest in that or not is separate question. Knowing them, they will never take part in country’s properity unless they benefit from that. There is nothing that they will benefit from stock exchange.
There is a serious need for the change in constitution to put Singhala people, their religion and their language at the top most position and implement that seriously. Come what may, it has to be done, if the country has to prosper.

        kalang,

I totally disagree with you from the education standard point of view.
Having had the opportunity to work with the cream of Malaysian students both Chinese & Malays, I got the feeling that education standard among Malays are getting worse due to these policies !! Actually the level is unbelievably LOW even among the Malay government scholars ! The level is so low, that other than Malaysian government sponsored scholarships, all the other scholarship opportunities occupied by the Chinese students. If you take Monbusho, JP government scholarship given to the best Asian students, there are hardly any Malay !

These kind of affirmative actions will bring immence damage to our education standards. No matter the validity of arguments for this, in a long future, country can never prosper from these rules.

Ever heard of the Galleon Group and the internationally famous Raj Rajaratnam. Thieves have no colour, caste or race. The point of the article is to show the laws in Malaysia compared to Sri Lanka. The author has missed the 1% additional interest on Investments and the 1% less on the Loans given by banks to Bhumiputhras and the issue of state-council houses only to Bhumiputhras.

Once People are converted to Religions, then They lose the Indigenous Status. Those converted people may be Natives BUT Not Indigenous.

    (The Sinhalese constitute 74% of the population, but 95% of public service, 95% of armed forces; 95 % cabinet, 80% MPs, 99% Permanent Secretaries, 99 % Supreme Court and High Court judges and 99% Heads of Departments are Sinhalese nhalese. Additionally 100 % president, 100% PM, 100% Finance Minister, are all Sinhalese. If this is not Bhumiputhra what else is Bhumiputhra?}

    • Dilshan says:

Singheela people are the native Tamil people who were converted to foreign Buddhism. Tamileelam people are Indigenous.

      • goldenpearl says:

Get you brain checked please. Why did these native Original Tamil Eelam people chose to live in a godforsaken northern dry area when the water is in the South.

Before independence, the CEYLON Civil Service comprised of tons and tons of members of the Tamil community, as the British found them to be dedicated and hardworking, that is why most of the missionary schools were established in the nort h and the east of serendipity.
Even in business, the Tamils were controlling and were successful in their business ventures they controlled the economy.
Come 1956, things changed, the Sinhalese had a new saviour, fresh blood and llife was injected into their weary limbs, Ceylon from being an exporter of rice is now an importer. A country like Singapore, was nothing when compared to the likes of Ceylon , which was called serendib, now became Sri Lanka, thanks to bankrupt politicians, who are members od the majority Sinhalese, who make up more than 80% of the population.
Today Singapre, thanks to it’s then prime minister Lee Kwan Yew, is one of the most developed and wealthiest nations on the planet whilst mother Lanka, has become a pariah, a third world economy which is dependent on the foreign exchange remittances of its citizens who are mainly emplyed in the middle east as house-maids and house-boys. A sunday stroll in Serangoon in Singapore on a sunday, will bring out the domestic helpers in their multitudes.
Now, that the curse of the infectious diease called ” terrorisam ‘, which was brought about by the discrimination that was unfortunately thrown upon the once mighty Tamils, has been ruthlessly eliminated, the island nation has another throw at the dice.
The present President continues to make utterances that all communities are equal and to him all the Tamils are his relatives. Hopefully he is sincere in what comes out of his mouth. because during the height of the conflict, on his numerous going abroad frequent rides, on Sri Lankan airways, no member of the Tamil community was allowed to me a part of the crew, now the the tide has been changed, he is fearful of the Sinhalese, who are his brothers and sisters in arms, now he regrets for eliminating the LTTE.
If the Tamils are allowed to contribute, mother Lanka has the opportunity of becoming another Singapore, to make that take become a reality, all forms of discrimination have to be discarded into the wastebins and all forms of corruptions by those in power or self serving indivuals.
As a former Sri Lankan, who found solace in New Zealand, due to being hounded by the Sri Lankan Police, during the year 1987, now an Australian and a Kiwi, of Tamil origin, I intend going back to Sri Lanka, with the idea of contributing my two cents to make Sri Lanka, a paradise on this planet. shortly and I hope that I will be able to. a j.

    • Nimal says:

Tamils like you seriously need to stop smoking crack. Sri Lanka does not need you.

      • anthony jones says:

You have got your knickers in a twist, facts are stubborn my friend.

Thankfully since 1983, no riots, maiming, burning, raping and looting have taken place.

Where were you on that friday in july 1983, when the tigers had supposedly landed at the railway station in Fort, the true colours were exhibited when it was ascertained that the story was not true.

For Sri Lanka, to become the next Singapore, people like you have to a good bath with the good old ” LIFEBUOY “.

        All the best. a j.

    • Kalag says:

Which planet are yiu in? Singapore and Sri Lanka have their differences. Singapore has no resources other than human resources. Sri Lanka has plenty. Only problem is that the Tamils claim most of it as theirs. They don’t do anything with it and they don’t let others to do anything with it.
That is why the country hasn’t developed. The Tamils hold all the wealth, atleast most of it. Then they want a state for them, leaving the majority Singhalese high and dry. That is what they call “political solution”.
Who stopped Tamils from contributing? They are educated (mostly up to a degree) in Sri Lanka for free. They leave the country and make contribution to other countries. They never pay anything back. It is all paid by Singhalese who left over in Sri Lanka. If the govt drop its guard, Tamils will spong the country’s wealth more and more.

  6. KOOPU says:

…IF SINHALEASE ARE HAPPY WITH GOVT.JOBS WHOESE FAULT IS THIS…TAMILS ARE NOT ONLY PROSPEROUS IN SRI LANKA BUT ALSO IN SOUTH AFRICA…SINGAPORE..MAURITIUS..INDONEASIA…SIMPLY BECAUSE OF HARD HARD WORK…….HOW MANY OF YOU KNOWS THAT IN INDONESIA MARIMUTHU CHETTIARS FAMILY IS ONE OF THE RICHEST THERE..THIS FAMILY STARTED BUSINESS IN WEAVING SARONG AND TODAY PRODUCE MILITARY TANKS…WHO EVER COME TO POWER IN INDONESIA….THEY GO THE FRIENSHIP OF THIS FAMILY….EVEN TODAY IN MYANMAR MOST LANDS IN YANGOON IS OWNED BY TAMILS…..

    • Kalag says:

It proves that Tamils are parasites.

      • anthony jones says:

kalag, sad to say that you have mental issues, consult the necessary people and get yourself cured before you go down the pallanama, then you have no hope even in hell.

        you are nothing a ra
        cist. a j.

        • Kalag says:

OK Mat. I will get some medical help. But before that you prove to the world that where ever the Tamils go (particularly Jaffna Tamils), they don’t mess up the place.
          1. They came to Sri Lanka (may be 1000s of years ago or may be 100s of years ago. It is not important). They “worked hard”, admittedly. Then they became the biggest criminals (as per any country’s law, insurgency or armed struggle is treason). That was the biggest crime you can commit against the country you live in.
          2. They went to Canada – They did well but their reputation is not “hard working people”. They are known as traffickers, credit card cuprits and common criminals.
          3. They went to USA – They did well but see what did this Raj Rajaratnam guy do. It is the world record!!!
          Shall I go on???
And you say I have mental isuues? Thanks a lot mate.
