Cancer And Homeopathy

Xray of a cancer patient

Patients in Sri Lanka don’t even know that homeopathy can be used to treat cancer and so the number of cancer patients who seek treatment is very low or they come as a last resort when the disease has advanced to the point when only palliative relief can be offered. Homeopathic medicines can be used to treat cancer; they are safe, and they can be taken to combat the side effects of chemo or radiation therapy without any harmful interaction. I would also like to stress the importance of early treatment for a better chance of recovery.

Dr. Arthur Hill Grimmer practiced for over 50 years in Chicago and The Collected Works of A.H. Grimmer edited by Ahmed N. Currim offers evidence of the cancer cases treated successfully by this homeopathic physician.  Dr. A.U. Ramakrishnan’s book A Homeopathic Approach To Cancer details 126 cases of cancer and 25 types of cancer that have been treated successfully in India.

Homeopathic remedies enhance the innate healing processes within the body to cure disease. To understand how a remedy works we must first know how they are made. To illustrate this I shall make use of the garlic plant. The fresh bulbs are ground in corresponding amounts of alcohol and water and then left to stand. Water is known as the universal solvent, as it dissolves most substances and the alcohol tends to preserve the sap. This decanted solution is known as the mother tincture. Nothing more is added to this tincture or removed from it.

Garlic (Allium sativum) may be used this way to treat various conditions, but Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathic medicine, was not satisfied as he sought a safe and permanent way to cure disease. Even such a thing as garlic can cause unpleasant effects when taken in crude form and so Hahnemann devised the unique process of ‘potentisation’. Potentisation involves putting one drop of the mother tincture into 99 drops of alcohol and then shaking the contents. This becomes the first potency 1c (the point at which the garlic becomes a homeopathic remedy).  Thereafter, a drop of the first potency is added to 99 drops of alcohol and this step can be repeated 30, 200 and even 1000 times. (The Complete Family Guide To Homeopathy by Dr. C. Hammond) It is thought that there are no molecules present in the more dilute solutions or potencies. So it begs the question as to how these remedies can still exert a curative influence.

My view is that the scientific evidence is yet to be discovered – particles may still remain or energy may be transferred – some kind of molecular imprint is carried forth. We may not yet understand how they work but we certainly know that they work. In 2003, research by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre of the University of Texas in collaboration with Dr. P. Banerji, published an article in the International Journal of Oncology (2003;23 (4):975-982) titled “Ruta 6 Selectively Induces Cell Death in Brain Cancer Cells but Proliferation in Normal Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes: A Novel Treatment For Brain Cancer”. This means that Ruta graveolens, a homeopathic remedy in the sixth dilution, was able to kill the brain cancer cells without any damage to healthy cells. This research offers a glimpse of how homeopathic remedies work, but I believe they are of a more sophisticated nature.

Further clinical evidence that homeopathic medicines are effective is abundant – successful trials have been conducted on asthma patients and another on patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In 1991, three professors of medicine — J. Kleijnen, P. Knipschild and G. Ter Riet, performed a meta-analysis of 25 years of clinical studies using homeopathic medicines and published their findings Clinical Trials of Homeopathy in the British Medical Journal (February 9, 1991, 302:316-323). “This meta-analysis covered 107 controlled trials, of which 81 showed that homeopathic medicines were effective. The professors said, “The amount of positive results came as a surprise to us,” and concluded that “the evidence presented in this review would probably be sufficient for establishing homeopathy as a regular treatment for certain indications.” They also mention that of the trials that were designed and carried out well, a higher rate of success was achieved. More information about these trials can be found in Dana Ullman’s book Consumer’s Guide To Homeopathy or on the Homeopathic Educational Services website www.homepathic.com

Treating cancer with homeopathy

Cancer is an invasive disease because it can invade every part of the body and also deplete your immune system and disturb mental and emotional well being.

Warning signs and symptoms include:

Unexplained loss of weight/appetite
Changes in usual bowel pattern
Repeated ear/throat infections
Difficulty in swallowing/breathing
Bleeding/bruising
Painless swellings/lumps
Chronic exhaustion

Cancer, as all diseases within a homeopathic framework, is known as a multi-causal disease. This means that a combination of causes or risk factors determine the onset.

Risk factors include:

Cigarette smoke/passive smoking
Chewing betel leaves
Food – carcinogens/alcohol/obesity
Weak immune system – HIV or AIDS
Environment – radiation/sun/industrial chemicals
Family history of cancer (genetic)
Specific viruses – hepatitis B virus
www.cancerhelp.org.uk

Metaphysical risk factors

Chronic stress/negative thoughts and emotions
Victims of abuse/war/trauma – post traumatic stress

Louise Hay developed cancer and she attributes it to abuse she faced in her childhood. Being a metaphysical healer and counselor she used positive feelings and thoughts to heal the cancer – in six months the doctors declared she had no cancer. In her book Metaphysical Causations she explains that cancer can be caused by deep grief and long standing resentment. This means that negative feelings and thoughts over a long period of time can produce physical symptoms and pathological changes in the body. Further she associates each organ with specific negative feelings and thought patterns:

Breast – over protection or lack of nurturing
Prostate – fear of old age/giving up
Uterus – suppressed creativity

Homeopathic prescribing does take into account these metaphysical factors and act as a catalyst in helping individuals to let go of such stress and negative thoughts and emotions. Disciplines like yoga, Reiki, acupuncture, meditation, music, art or spiritual pursuits can bring about this mental and emotional well being too.

Homeopathic Remedies used in treating cancer

In targeting the cancerous growth we can use constitutional remedies (those prescribed for the pathology and because it fits the totality of the patient’s profile). The following are some such constitutional remedies:

Arsenicum album (made from white oxide of arsenic) is indicated for leukemia, lung, liver and stomach cancer. These patients will appear anxious; have ‘burning’ pains and general weakness.
Conium maculatum (the plant hemlock) is indicated for the patient with cancer in the thyroid, lymph, breast or prostate glands. For patients with paralysis and a slowing down of mental faculties.
Lachesis muta (made from venom of the South American bushmaster snake) is used in skin, throat and uterine cancer. Predominantly left sided symptoms, shortness of breath worse during sleep and the patient can be very talkative.

Support remedies

These remedies are also called organ support or therapeutic remedies and they have an affinity for treating specific cells, organs or disease states in the body.

To remove toxins from liver – Cinchona officinalis (Peruvian bark), Avena sativum (Oat)
Side effects of Chemotherapy – Arsenicum album, Phosphorus (the element red phosphorus)
Side effects of radiation therapy – Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis)
Immune system – Echinacea angustifolia (purple cone flower)
Therapeutic remedies – Hydrastis canadensis (root of golden seal) affinity to organs of the digestive tract. It can treat cancer of the mouth, stomach, liver and colon.
Please note that this article has been written to create public awareness and that patients must seek advice from a homeopathic physician for treatment.

Interesting article. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on cancer research ever year, yet the improvements in treatment, not even breakthroughs, occur at a snail’s pace if at all.

I have two interesting books which are filled with implication, suggestion and the possibility of dramatic cancer treatment- yet both books lack detailed protocols and lack confirmation by scientific research. Those books are:
Research in Physiopathology as a Basis of Guided Chemotherapy with Special Application to Cancer. Princeton, NJ: D Van Nostrand, Inc: 1961 by Dr. E. Revici
    and
The Collected Works of Arthur Hill Grimmer MD.

Unfortunately, despite the interesting, even intriguing leads, the methods of neither book have ever been properly tested. Some desultory tests were made, without the full confirmation of Revici himself and found to be wanting – I don’t put much stock in these tests. Grimmer’s book is filled with brief yet tantalizing glimpses of his dedication and Homeopathic expertise. Neither book offers sufficient diagnostic information and test regimen protocol to establish a definitive test. That both Doctors attained successes, sometimes even spectacular successes, in cancer treatments is well known.

So what is needed here is that we must somehow interest some foundation and/or research group in setting up, at what would obviously be considerable expense, a proper testing regimen for these kinds of approaches, however it might be accomplished. This would necessarily involve a plethora of exegesis of their works, possibly even the establishment of a research institute to coordinate the testing of the new approaches.

There are those who would immediately dismiss such approaches as “proven” wrong by some totally insufficient testing by testers who had not even bothered to confirm with the doctors the correctness of their “test”. For example it is well known that Revici’s method was supposedly tested,
(Lyall D, Schwartz M, Herter FP, et al. Treatment of cancer by the method of Revici. JAMA. 1965;194:279-280. ) and found wanting (American Cancer Society web site – http://www.cancer.org/docroot/ETO/content/ETO_5_3X_Revicis_Guided_Chemotherapy.asp).
But, it has been rumored that serious pressure was brought against the book publisher, Van Nostrand, just prior to the publication of his book, pressure so strong that they decided to throw away a significant number of copies – which explains why the book is rare and hard to find nowadays. It is long overdue for serious resarch – if hundreds of millions can be expended on conventional treatments, the vast majority of which produce mediocre, or worse, negative results, then a few millions can surely be spared to investigate his ideas. I can attest, from reading it that it is one of the most brilliant books I have ever read, the man was a genius and patients with some of the most fatal looking cancers, including bone cancers, somehow ended up in stable and long lasting remission after Revici’s treatments. Many of these patients had been abandoned by conventional medicine as untreatable.

Likewise in the case of the brilliant Homeopathic physician Arthur Hill Grimmer MD, his collected works are filled with intriguing ideas and categorizations and treatments just begging to be studied and researched. It has been nearly half a century since Grimmer passed away. His ideas, like those of Revici, are very much outside the mainstream. Is it not about time that serious research deal with their ideas and confirm or deny or even find useful methodologies that can be used from them? The sceptics be damned, progress in medicine as in every other field is about taking a step into the unknown. THAT is where the answers are.

  2. This article ranks as one of the worst I’ve ever read. Homeopathy does not treat cancer. It doesn’t treat anything. Shame on you for exploiting the fears of sick and vulnerable people.

  3. Dr. Joe Schwarcz

What nonsense. People like this prey on the desperate. Treating cancer with homeopathy is a criminal activity. Non-existen molecules do not treat disease. But they do increase the bank accounts of crackpots.

    • I've experienced that it works

I’ve experienced that it works says:
February 9, 2010 at 8:25 am Clinical trials could prove that Homeopathy works if the participants were all clones. But we are all unique, everyone of us (even identical twins are not “identical”). Therefore standard trials that need to work on 100% of the particpants, 100% of the time can never be done to the allopathic medical profession’s satisfaction. Homeopathy treats each patient as unique.

Now if you look deeper, you will see how the pharmaceutical companies have a lot to lose if the relatively inexpensive Homeopathic remedies become mainstream. (Hey Joe, the drug companies are the ones preying on the desparate – their drugs haven’t CURED anything.)
Patients would get well and not have to continue buying their ineffective drugs. Homeopathy would cut into their massive profits, and they wouldn’t like that.

Now if you also look around, you will find that Homeopathy is growing steadily, because it works. People who come to Homeopathy are treated as a whole person (spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically), They are not treated only physically or only emotionally or only mentally like they were a bag of separate parts. (Ex. emotions of anger usually create ulcers – if you treat only the ulcer it won’t heal. Treat the anger and the ulcer heals itself.)

I’ve read a lot of ignorant comments about Homeopathy by people who know almost nothing about the workings and effectiveness of Homeopathy. Just because you can’t fully explain HOW something works, dosen’t mean it doesn’t work. There are thousands and thousands of people who are helped by Homeopathy everday and you can’t convince them that it doesn’t work because you can’t explain why. People who are sceptics should do their own research and their own personal trials of Homeopathy after they learn how to use it before they critisize Homeopathy. Otherwise you will really look like ignorant fools.

The paper you quote, J. Kleijnen, P. Knipschild and G. Ter Riet, Clinical Trials of Homeopathy, British Medical Journal (February 9, 1991, 302:316-323) states the following conclusions in its abstract:-

“CONCLUSIONS–At the moment the evidence of clinical trials is positive but not sufficient to draw definitive conclusions because most trials are of low methodological quality and because of the unknown role of publication bias. This indicates that there is a legitimate case for further evaluation of homoeopathy, but only by means of well performed trials.”

“Not sufficient to draw definitive conclusions [...] low methodological quality [...] unknown role of publication bias” is hardly a ringing endorsement of your claim that “homoeopathy can be used to treat cancer”, is it?

  5. batarista

Furthermore, recent analyses – of higher-quality studies – apparently contradict your assertion. See for example, Stefania Milazzo, Nancy Russell and Edzard Ernst, Efficacy of homeopathic therapy in cancer treatment. European Journal of Cancer Volume 42, Issue 3, February 2006, Pages 282-289, who conclude:-

“Our analysis of published literature on homeopathy found insufficient evidence to support clinical efficacy of homeopathic therapy in cancer care.”

    Would you care to comment?

    • Alpha

As I see it, the papers quoted in this article offer open access to the public and each individual reserves the right to their own opinions and chosen path of healing. These studies only scratch at the surface of how homeopathy may work and are certainly not definitive. Read ‘A Homeopathic Approach to Cancer by Dr A.U. Ramakrishnan for the clinical proof that homeopathy can treat cancer. They can also combat the side effects of chemo and radiation therapy.
With regard to homeopathy, scientific frontiers are in a rudimentary state and homeopathic medicine and philosophy are quite different to allopathic medicine. We need ways and means to test homeopathy but not using methods used to test allopathic drugs and the studies should be independent i.e. not funded by the pharmaceutical industry.
Ignorance is no excuse to denounce homeopathy, that would be like saying Gravity did not exist before Newton discovered it.

  7. batarista

Mr. Sathasivam, please would you clarify your claims for homoeopathy: do you claim to cure cancer or merely to alleviate symptoms of radiotherapy? The paper you cite, substantiates neither claim.

There are obviously bigger stories than homoeopathy, to concern the Venerable Island today. So, let me wish you peace, prosperity, health & happiness.

  8. batarista

Mr. Sathasivam, more than two weeks have elapsed, yet you choose not to reply. I will assume you withdraw your claims.

  10. this is really alarming. I have also been writing about that, and i see we share some views.

  11. Hi there may I use some of the content found in this blog if I reference you with a link back to your site?

  12. Might 29, 2010, is intending to host 1 of the most tough and brutal function of the month when some of the ideal amateur wrestlers in UFC will take on each other in UFC 114. It is going to bring position at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada. If you fail to get to Nevada in time, you do not have to be disappointed, as you can effortlessly view UFC 114 on the net.

  13. Hi, Thanks for such interesting stuff as I have been able to find here. I agree with most of what is written here and I’ll be coming back to this website again.

    1. The doctor is a lady, for anyone who is interested, she is my family doctor so I know.

    2. This is a weekly Newspaper, called the Sunday leader which is an online paper.

    3. I believe this article may have been given to the paper and the good doctor may not even realize that there are comments on here that she has to answer to, which is a good thing, rather than trying to prove/clarify the article, she would be putting her time to better use treating her patients.

    4. I am aware that there are some who are paid to discredit this kind of natural remedies/healing etc. So one would get all sorts of comments coming out of the woodwork

    5. This is for ‘skepticat’, I think you sound like you have no idea what you are talking about, and even if you do you still sound like you have read nothing. So your motivation for the trouble you took to comment, must be personal. I guess a lot of research is in order.

    6. To batarista – Your comment, ‘There are obviously bigger stories than homoeopathy, to concern the Venerable Island today’. Yes…there are stories and stories, every story is important, I get to choose what I want to read and what I don’t, just as much as the next person, it is not your business to tell anyone what is more important in any context.

    7. To Alpha ‘- your comment ‘Not much of a surprise as pharmaceutical giants are lobbying the British parliament’. Good one and so true and it doesn’t end there, almost every government in office around the world is in the pocket of the pharmaceutical giants. Google Codex Alimentarius. You tube has a lot of videos on it.

I am doctor of internal medicine in korea
I experienced many case of cancer pain subsided by homeopathic remedies.
One stomach cancer patient who treat cancer pain by high dosage of morphine came to me to treat morphine side effect ,auditory and visual hallucination.
I stop the morphine and gave the homeopathic remedies. After that, minimal pain continue ,every thing is OK .
