Sarath Fonseka Arrested For “Military Offences”
Sri Lanka’s former Army Commander and defeated Presidential candidate, Sarath Fonseka, was sensationally arrested by the Military Police at his Colombo offices early evening on Monday.
The retired General, who took to politics immediately after his retirement from his position of Chief of Defense Services (CDS) recently lost out on his bid to unseat the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa by a margin of some 1.8 million votes.
The retired Generals’ aide, Senaka Silva was also arrested. The news of the arrest sent shockwaves throughout Sri Lanka. General Fonseka is said to have been taken to a safe house in the Malabe area. He was arrested by the military police and according to the government information department is to be charged for committing military offences.
The arrest of the General is not a good sign for the democracy of Sri Lanka. My view is that the General should not be brought before a military court. He should be tried in a civilian court if he has committed any offence. Well, people would anxiously await to know what the charges are against the General. The whole world would be laughing at the Sri Lankans, and would obviously compare Sri Lanka to Mugabe’s Zimbabwe!!!!

The Air Force and the Navy also had enjoined to finish off Praba.Don’t forget that it was the Navy who put up a blockade in the Eastern sea, so that no outside help could come from the sea, and Praba could not make his escape via the sea. The Air Force bombed all the ammnition dumps and cleared a path for the infantry to get to the last part of the war torn areas! To say, that SF won the war singlehandedly is a foolhardy comment. We should be grateful to a President who did not give up on the war, even under very harsh international pressure, like our former Presidents did. The problem is now that no one is worried about getting killed by an LTTE bomb when one goes out to town, we are supporting people who trying to destabilize the government. The poor stupid Sinhalese people will never make it because all they think of is strikes and agitation! Look at the countries which are succeeding economically? Do you see the people striking and creating disturbances? The arrest of SF is not at all surprising because during the last six months the fact that this man (1) knows too much, and that (2) is very strong and bound to come out with the truth at any moment was getting more and more evident. It was do or die battle at the last PE for the three brothers, to win at any cost, which they did at the expense of the dignity of the country externally and the majority voter who stood up bravely against all odds internally. I am not a great fan of SF but his arrest is dispicable. He may not convince many people in Sri Lanka as a person fit to rule the country. But he did command the army during the war. This is not the way to investigate him for what he did after the war.

SF needes to realise that he needs to abide by the military code of ethics, even after he retired because of the sensitive nature of the information. We need to realise that the government of Sri Lanka ran a war against the most ruthless of terrorist organisations in the world, and won that war after sacrificing almost 30,000 troops and another 70,000 civilians. For the ex general to be shouting that he is going to give information about the civil war in Sri Lanka to the international world is equal to treason against the government of Sri Lanka. If he was a smart man in politics, he would have limited his verbiage to the current conditions that are plaguing the ordinary citizens of the country, and not continue to threaten the stability of Sri Lanka. We need politicians who have the best interest of the little man at heart, and not ones who are motivated by revenge and hatred against individuals in the government. SF wanted to come in to power by hook or by crook. MENIK, I totally agree what you say. But something does not look right. It is the reputation of the country is on line. That does not mean SF can say things whatever he likes.
My thinking was that he could have been warned about military secrets and military codes etc. If he didn’t listen then he could have been arrested. Now, the enemies of Sri Lanka are laughing and waiting for this to blow out of proportion.
SF was part of the National Security Council, during the height of the war and also as Chief of Staff after the war. He was part and parcel of the highest of information that is utmost of importance to the security of the country. I don’t think one who is part of it, needs to be warned and told that he cannot go blabbing about it to the international world. Would you do it? I would not do it. There must be some sort of oath taking not to divulge information which is part of the security of the county to outsiders. Anyway, from what I am reading, SF will have the legal rights to due process of appealing any judgement against him, first to the Court of Appeals and then to the SC. I doubt very much the government will just sentence him without a due legal process, as the International countries will be watching to see what happens. I also think the arrest of SF was done as a last resort. SF was also shouting and telling the media asking why the goverment does not arrest him. He was saying MR was scared to arrest him etc. Now, he’s got what he wanted. Moreover, I think he should have surrendered in a dignified manner and not dessisted arrest, to avoid being dragged by his feet and carried bodily. That would have shown to the world he was a peaceful person. Instead, SF had resorted to foul language, and had name called the President. General Sarath Fonseka, the former Sri Lankan military chief and defeated presidential candidate, was punched and dragged along the ground by troops led by a Major General who arrested him as he met political allies last night, the Daily Telegraph said Tuesday. “There was no decorum. To call it an arrest gives dignity and legality to what was a brutal abduction. He was beaten, dragged along the floor and bundled into a van,” said opposition politician and Fonseka’s campaign spokesperson Mangala Samaraweera.
Foneska’s wife was later forced to give a statement to police investigators, who raided her home at midnight and questioned her until 2am.
Foneska had been meeting Sri Lankan Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Rauf Hakim and Mano Ganesan, the leader of the Democratic People’s Front, at their Colombo campaign headquarters, when Major-General Sumith Manawadu stormed in with a group of military policemen and ordered them to arrest the general and his aide Senaka da Silva.
“They stormed into the conference room while the meeting was going on and assaulted Mano Ganesan, he [Major-General Manawadu] punched him and then a dozen army people walked in,” Mr Samaraweera told the Daily Telegraph.
“General Fonseka said ‘this must be done by the police’, at which point Manawadu punched Fonseka. The other armed fellows pinned him to the ground and dragged him by the legs. They carried him down the stairs and bundled him into a van along with his secretary. He was also assaulted,” Mr Samaraweera said.
“He is retired, the military police can’t arrest him, it must be under civil law. Until 2am General Fonseka’s wife had no idea of his whereabouts, and we still don’t know anything. You can’t be assaulted and bundled into a car without a warrant,” he added.

During his election campaign, SF had threatened to court marshal all army officers that involved in politics, ’when’ he wins the Presidency on 26th. Now that he lost the election, he should not be allowed to collude with the IC, NGOs, Christian Evangelists, the Eelamists and the failed politicians to conspire against the elected leaders of this country.
SF should be questioned about his meeting in foreign embassies and foreign countries with foreign agents and opposition law makers while he was CDS. SF should be questioned about all those inappropriate things that had spat out from his foul mouth. We should not cast a die on Karuna as a murderer because of his past action. He was a misguided man then. People can change and people do change. Perhaps, Angulimala a man who became a monk in Buddha’s time is the best example. Angulimala is said to have killed nine hundred and ninety nine innocent beings because of dire advice. When he was about to kill his mother, Buddha foresaw it, met him, took him under his wings, preached him and transformed him to be the ‘innocent’ at the time. Thereafter he became an ‘arahath’. I don’t know about others, But Karuna is a transformed man. I believe he is in good company now . He will be an asset to this country in time to come. Watch his choice of words; you will see what I mean. Watch SF’s words; paharaya, kalawedda, balla …. I don’t know to what he had transformed himself to be.
As for KP and his booty I suppose we have to wait until investigations are over. Particularly because KP’s one-time successor or replacement identified as Ragan has been taken into custody recently. So be patient.
