Anoma Fonseka Appears at Satyagraha

Anoma Fonseka the beleagured wife of the defeated Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka, made a startling appearance at the opposition-led peaceful protest in Hultsdorf, near the country’s Supreme Court Complex.
She joined a crowd of nearly 800 people who had come to show solidarity and protest the arrest of the retired General. Her appearance spurred the crowd but her statement was drowned by the exuberance of her husbands’ supporters.
Earlier the Police tear gassed the opposition crowds when it appeared that they would break ranks and have a face to face battle with the much smaller crowd who had turned up in support of the Rajapaksa administration.
Within the background of the island’s Supreme Court Complex, the irony of a demonstration that was to be a peaceful protest was lost on the crowd, the parliamentarians and very significantly on the large contingent of lawyers who were present. The sanctity of the country’s highest court complex was lost today as the Police stood undecided as to what exactly they should do. Almost in panic, they tear gassed the opposition end of the crowds, some running towards the main gates of the Supreme Court in the mistaken belief that the crowds would in the least respect the Supreme Court.
Mrs Fonseka after her brief appearance, made her way towards the Supreme Court complex to hand over the Fundamental Rights application. She was accompanied by a large entourage which included Thalatha Athukorala, Kabeer Hashim, Somawansa Amerasinghe, Mangala Samaraweera, Rauff Hakeem amongst others.

  1. Today, a president and his thugs have shown contempt and ingratitude towards a disciplined person and Gentleman. a man who with his mettle brought the Lankan forces from a rag tag army to an army of professionals, they fought, they lost lives, limbs and they won. Today a family of stooges and their thugs believe that they can rule a Nation through fear, the Lankans are not Burmans, who believes that Buddha will save them 60 years of hardships and slavery. We in Lanka will never permit a friend of Than Shwe to rule us as a King. Mahinda refused a visa to his Holiness the Dalai Lama, this was because his Chinese masters obliged him.. Why mix religion and politics. The Dalai Lama is venerated by millions of Buddhists around the world. Shame on you UPFA Goats,

    • GREEN

Wow ..Amazing..What a knowledge & Patta comment. Carry on..

    • Kalag

Only thing is that almost 70% of Sri Lankans think MR is a better ruler than anyone else in the country. Only Tamils and die hard UNPers are clinging on to the “Military Ruler”.
SF has to learn how to be a politician, let alone statesman. He is thinks politics is “giving orders”. He has lot to learn. Unfortunately, the people around him have never ruled a country. He can’t learn from them but he will be manipulated by them.
If he is charged by the military or civilian court, those around him will melt away. They know these charges are very serious.

      • MENIK

Yes, I agree with you Kalag. I hope the military court finds him guilty and puts him away for 30 years or more. At the least take away his civic rights, so that he cannot participate in politics. The man is an agitator, and is a huge threat to the future peace of Sri Lanka. Even Ranil has not behaved in such a mannner. The only others who have behaved in such a violent manner are the political party JVP, with whom SF has an unholy alliance now, and of course, the pro LTTE party the TNA, a huge supporter of SF who hope to achieve what Praba could not through this man! I sincerely hope the law will have enough evidence to put this man away for a very long time!

        • Talking about politicians behaving badly, Menik, you have a wonderful decent guy called Mervyn on your team, you must be proud of him right.

        • sharon

Winning the war was a team effort this involves even the little babies born during this era. We all sacrificed for the war for 30 years. It is not a war that should be credited to one leader or one person.

We Sri Lankans are famous for remembering one wrong done, against the many good things done. If there is anyway we can heal the rift between these two great leaders who were responsible for winning the war along with all the citizens of this country, this includes the Forces who sacrificed their lives – we can stop this vandetta and concentrate on the development of this country.

The President is a nice man – the goons around him are using him to gain their own ends. I wish he sees this.

        • Dilshan

That will complete the LTTE’s wishes come True.

        • ed

I don’t think Mahinda Rajapaksa is that bad, but I think his drunk with power, and the main problem is his brothers, Gotabhaya and Basil they distroy what ever the respect he has left

      • RASAIA

Kalag, don’t put the blame on SF. Remember he was made to do that by our opposition alliance. They have to take that responsibility. Otherwise his mental illness may not have reputed all over the world, & live with dignity as a true hero of the country. All the scenario we are witnessing now were foreseen long back when he entered to politics. Many people opposed only for this reason.

        • SHIVA

          Dear Kalag ,MENIKE,RASAIA
Everbody seems to come to the correct track. Now I feel we should sympathize and the people around him should be made aware that the man is suffering from a treatable medical condition called ‘sadistic personality disorder’ . Surely when he recovers (If he was allowed to take treatments) he will definitely understand his place in the country and discard the dirty politics forever.

      • Prabath

        Kalag,
Wake up Kalg. Are you born today. You are talking about a national hero who had severly injured twice at the battle front and once at army-headquarters. Still he had courage to face terrorist and defeat them and protect our nation and our beloved motherland. This is a man who was fighting to protect our country when your so called politician are taking of Sunami Sahana Mandala and devolution. Are you a such a infant who do not see what is right and what is wrong. Just take your political galsses away see clearly what is happening.

        • kh

Prabath, Go to BBC Sinhala Website. National hero is going to testify “Sri Lanka’s former military commander says that he is prepared to give evidence in an international court on war crime charges against Sri Lanka.”.

          Is this a true hero?

        • ed

When he say testify , he doesn’t say what it is? he could testify and say they didn’t commit any crime and that will clear the name of sri lanka, in fact he has stated he take full responsibility for the actions of his army.

If there is nothing to hide why worry?

    • Citzen Silva

There now exists a secret warrant for Gota’s arrest in the US, and via Interpol enforcable in the EU and other countries where the rule of law applies.

Gota, a US citizen, will now be confined to psychiatric treatment in Sri Lanka, Iran, Myanmar, Libya, North Korea, Russia or China. Gota fled Sri Lanka as an economic refugee and stayed away for 15 YEARS!!!! .. and now this rabid dog professes love for the motherland.. more than people who spent the past 15 yrs fighting & directing battles in the trenches and jungles of the N-E. All that time Gota was at a desk in Los Angeles.

Even Karuna, Piliyan, Daya Master et al must be laughing out of their rear ends, watching it all in air conditioned comfort.. card carrying LTTE core leaders now sipping green tea in government bungalows, while our 5* General, Rana Wickrama Padakkama, Rana Sura Padakkama,
Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya, Uttama Seva Padakkama, Desha Putra Sammanaya, was assaulted and the bundled in to a ‘white van’ of to incarceration without warrant.

Gota in his BBC interview looks like a total madman, unable to even sit in his chair because he is seething with anger like a hydrophobic dog.

ps. Iran is on the verge of collapse so not a good time to visit

      • sharon

I agree totally with you Citizen Silva, Hooray for something intelligent said.

      • deshamamaka

Whatever the KILLer LTTE supporters say GOTA pioneered annihilation of your death squad. We hail him for that and are proud of him!

      • ed

you are right on the point, I think gotabaya is crazy and he is acting like a crazy dog, people living in the US have already complained to the state department, he will get what he need when he try to come to US again

      • Citizen Silva,
We all die only once. Gotabhaya is brave and is a man of principles and the R-brothers will do their best for the country. Lee Kuan yew family is developing S’PORE in spite of charges of Nepotism.Remember, R family has served the masses for many generations- love of the country is in their blood. You do not have to worry when Gota shows anger. Do not show your calibre by addressing a fine decorated officer and an efficient DS. Look how the IT side of the army was developed by him. Please do not ridicule anybody. Write to the point for a healthy discussion. If SF is convicted, he can apply to MR for a pardon/house arrest. Let us be together at that juncture!
        Chanakya.

      • Asoka P

Citizen Silva knows how to rant – with the anger of a rabid (hydrophobic) dog !!! He should apply to be the spokesperson for Gota.

      • smash

Mr silva your rubbish statement itself showed that how important man GOTA for this country in regard to security and law and order..he is a man with a vision and a target..we are celebrating the end of war purely because of his managerial efficiency..He was in battle feild at wadamarachchi and jaffna fort with late brig .Kobbekaduwa and Wijaya Wimalaratne..He left the country with the death of them..otherwise you would have seen his fate during premadasa/Ranjan Wijeratna regiem..
You ideot do not realise but killer prabha knew that he is the key man and send two suiciders to kill him and we sri lankans were so fortunate to see his narrow escape…

      • Teardrop

Well said Citizen Silva, Whoever was responsible for ending the war does not earn the right to rob, intimidate, and take the law unto themselfs.

They were elected to safeguard the country and do the right thing for the country.

MR and the family are taking the country backward and also taken the rights out of the citizens.

  2. Shiva

Mrs. Anoma Fonseka must contest in the upcoming Parlimentary elections and show the Rajapakse regime that Sri Lankans believe in democracy and not in thuggary, intimidation, abduction and violence.

Mrs. Anoma Fonseka if not Sarath Fonseka is not released in time to contest in election must call the International Community to investigate war crimes and human rights abuses in Sri Lanka.

Like Mrs. Srimavo Bandaranayake, Mrs. Anoma Fonseka has the support of the people to bring stability to Sri Lanka. Chandrika Kumarathunga should support this movement to end corruption, violence and crimes in Sri Lanka.

    • Well said maaan, hope we can finally get rid of the evil brother of Mahinda “GOATS”, Mahinda has gone off to cuckooland since he takes himself for Duthugemunu and asks his podiyen to tdiddle his testi’s As for Basil, we’ll open a Thai restaurant and serve Chicken a la Basile

      • Demalapakaya

Now how about getting a cuckoo to peck your clit or your marbles whatever the case may be. No more getting rid of goats or duthugemenu’s or basile’s because like SF said Sri Lanka belongs to the Sinhalese and not demala hutthas. What we got rid of is those ugly hated demala assoles. Keep shouting. After 37+ years plus who prevailed?

    • sharon

      I agree with you Shiva.

    • Dear Shiva,
Do not ever compare Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike with anybody else. In addition to her charisma, she had much common sense. There were no communal violence in her tenures. The highest amount of people ever gathered at the Jaffna Esplanade was when she addressed the masses in the 1970s. Read what PM of Singapore told the U.N. assembly when she was the PM: That he wanted to make S’Pore to be another Sri Lanka. She was a unique first ever woman PM of the world! Many say that Chandrika is a spent force.
      Thank you.

      • Citzen Silva

Mr Sirima Banda ran the country sooooo well… there were eternal good shortages & rationing…to leave the country you had to get an “EXIT VISA” and surrender your food ration book.

      • SH

I cannot believe how short a memory you people have? Another Sirimavo or Chandrika?? Were you born yesterday?

      • pambi

Chanakkaya, i think you are are real Bando ass licker. What s so great about being the worlds 1st woman PM when you set in motion the rot to cripple the country half a decade later. Where is the S’Pors your parents dreamed of? Those at the UN assembly who heard this rubbish must be tickling themselves now. And Lew Kuan yew must bestill having wet dreams about his charismatic girlfriend from the Land of the Lions and Tigers.

    • arif

Shiva, dont make me laugh. Chandrika to support ending of corruption? This is like appointing the devil to quote from the scriptures.. Dont forget that she was only running an off-duty liquor bar at horagolla to make ends meet before she became president. Now, where to catch.

  3. susan

    dear all,

this is the dirty politics, there are three key people in this victory MR,Gota and SF. SF is the key person in the ground.without his strategies and hard leadership still we are in unsafe situation.MR taken all international pressure and SF lead the war till the last end in wellamulliwaikkal.but idiotic politician and unqualified ministers ruined the srilankan image, MR and SF.but now we all are very innocent because our war hero is in jail.I feel very sorry about SL law and order in the country.god will be definitely looking after all deliberate lies . if we not face the reality, our future will be in danger.think before u comment as intelligent people. u all must remember that a heroic leader should not be in prison like this.

  4. Meena

Everybody knows he is a true hero. But the problem is the monster behind him. Fortunately, thanks to the democracy people could foresee the danger. And now many people know that he is suffering from a mental illness which had led the whole scenario upto now. Surely this will be a big topic in due time.
I too agree Susan ,”a heroic leader should not be in prison like this”. But you know for whom the ‘lunatic asylums’ are made for.

    • Rajapakse, took himself for GodKing, Duthugemunu, he was crowned on the insistence of his brother Medvedev Obliged, and he has gone cuckoo poor old Mahinda Rajapukka, HLL “HIS LOWLY LOWLINESS” The 300 millions USD arms deal with the Russians could have provided housing for all the disabled servicemen and better clinics, but a 10 percent commission was included along with the crown. Doctorate for madness, the guy was supposed to have gone to Law College, but forgot that no-one can be arrested without a charge and a Warrant.

      • Jee

You are correct. Nobody seas the level of corruption in this country. I think government is making SF a bigger hero by arresting him. This won’t give any advantage to government. It will swing some votes towards opposition in the general election.
People voted MR to thank for ending the civil war. Other than that government failed in every other aspects in governing the country. Also those who says SF is mad, please watch latest BBC interview with Gota and decide who has really gone mad now.

        • kh

Go to BBC Sinhala website. War hero is going to testify. “Sri Lanka’s former military commander says that he is prepared to give evidence in an international court on war crime charges against Sri Lanka.”

        • If there were corutption should have been contested by clear person. But SF is the most corupted person ever in army. How such a person create anti corupted goverment.
He had only small surface to buy at army.what he has done ?.He did dealth with his son inlaw

        • SACHI

If any one has done war crimes, he should testify against them. Rajapkshas are not given rights to to kill, intemidate, disappear and insult people as they want. Any right minded person should not cover them up.

      • kh

I think you are a LTTE supporter. Or you from that Somawansha’s group. Your comments show hate. I can see your heart fills with hate like Somawansa’s.

        • suran

What this so called patriots don’t see is trying to being patriotics you are admitting that sri lankan Army did do war crimes. If sf
says he can’t give evidence that means he is also admitting.evidence is either for it or against it.
Namal – It shows how well you know about Army during Sf ‘s commandership there was no corruption in the army .Just find out from people who dealt with army.I think you only watch Rupavahini.

      • Meena

Most people can’t understand the votes were cast for MR not because the MR is perfect but the SF showed his immaturity & paranoia. If Ranil was the candidate there would be 15% reduction of voting. In the absence of that there could be a tight finish.

        • Citzen Silva

Jilmart.. Mahinda Rajapukka is an example of someone one with Sadistic Personality Disorder… that is why it is not sufficient to “win” the presidential election by “1.8 million”… no he has to hunt down and beat up journalists, make one disappear, seal a newspaper, arrest his opponent etc etc… and order police + goon squads to assault unarmed protesters with liquor bottles, steel rods and bricks.

  5. Lankan007

More than half of the country does not really know as to what happens in the capital Colombo, all they mostly know is MR’s version of the news through pro government medias which are reverberating day in and day out. So, for rural people the truth is always what government says and they readily believe this fooling their entire future. Look what happened in the Presidential Election. Unless we have a free & fair media access to the rural area this will never change. We know what happens to daring journalists and Media institutions who wants to talk the truth?? So, if at all any change has to happen, it has to start from the rural level and not in the capital or in the cyber circle. Isnt this from 3rd world to world of Zimbabwe and beyound..!!

  6. P.L.J.B.Palipana

    Hi brothers & sisters!
My fear is Ethnic-Harmony or Ethnic-Reconciliation of our motherland. How we could do it with this foolish and selfish Sinhala politicians.
    P.L.J.B.Palipana,P.Eng
    SURREY,BC,CANADA

    • Chandrika Kumarathunge

Why do not you do it yourselves you bloody idiot. Do not show off your damn fake degrees. You all are shameless liars.

    • jolly seeya

I do not think Palipana is mature enough to talk about sinhala politics.
Lets talk about something else. What is P. ENG ?

    • pambi

You need to realize 2 things if you are really keen on bringing about Ethnic-Harmony or Ethnic Reconciliation.:
      1. No use flouting your P. Eng Surrey BC Canada in these columns. You can do the advertising elsewhere. You really dont need these initials to bring about harmony/reconciliation. It should come from deep within your heart.
      2. No use shouting about it from faraway BC CANADA. get down to brass tacks, get back to your motherland and try and work from the homebase.

  7. At last, the cat is out of the bag. BBC said; SF is ready to give evidence against (Shavendra Silva, Prasanna Silva, and etc) those that allegedly killed white flag carrying LTTE terrorists on war crimes charges at an International court.

Now, now, when Ms Federica Janz, the editor of ‘The Leader’ wrote a similar spit of words of SF, his JVP handlers barged in and vehemently denied it for him. Thereafter SF denied it too. It was rumoured that bulldog handlers of SF had made a tremendous effort to make Ms Janz withdraw her story as a misinterpretation. Great lady she is, not only she stood firm by her story, but reasserted that they were SF’s very words. Moreover she insisted her writing was totally based on her interview with SF. And she said she has her recording to prove it. With the BBC broadcast her write-up is now being proved to be correct beyond the slightest doubt. Ms. Janz; your views may be different to that of mine; but we hail you as an upright lady.

Now the question is; whether SF a war hero or a traitor? For us, the people who supported the war, SF is no longer a hero but a traitor. However for those that opposed the war, SF has become a hero. What an irony.

If SF has gone mad and chooses to represent TNA, so be it. We cannot but allow SF to go around the world, divulge state secrets and criticize this country.

    • FEROZ AUSTRALIA

Leela, are justifying the killing of surrendering terrorist???
the you have no idea what is the war rules.
Real war hero wont kill anyone who surrender, no matter whether they are ruthless terrorist or criminal.
Gota interview points, he commited that crime. He thinks , he is gentleman and war hero by commiting this kind of illegal stuff.
Who know howmany billions he earned from White van menace in this country????.
      You this this is right??
Just learn what is right and wrong???

      • deshamamaka

The war rules are only in the books. USA breaks them in Afganisthan but nobody talk about war crimes ! But when SL army kills two certified killer terrorists whole the world are up against them !

The only war crime SF mentioning is killing of Nadesan and Pulidevan when they came forwars with white flags. Now.. These 2 terrorist killers were involved in making a blood bath in Sri Lanka for 30 years. They were aiming guns till the last two day of the war. When they understand that they cannot escape with the help of foreign western supporters, they wanted to surrender with white flags. Killing them is the justice for them for that they killed innocent Tamil and civilian citizens in thousands.
If really they were soht down with or without white flags, that is justice!

        • Meena

Very true. Because SF has one of his foot in the American soil he expels some American voice too. Poor SF. He will never believe it is a betrayal because he thinks also in American style.

      • Psycho

Hey Feroze, dont talk rubbish mate from down under. If you are fair dinkum about Sri Lanka, come here and sort the problem out. Here in Lanka now shielas are on satyagraha.

so you lock him up? great dimocracy

what every the case, USA is going to procicute gota on war crimes

  8. Andrew G

The reasons why Rajapaksa brothers are afraid of Major Fonseka:
    1. Challenge the presidential election results in the SC and SF team have video camera recordings, audio tapes to prove what Basil did 27th morning
    2. If the opposition comes as one group for the general election, ‘swan’ will get more than 2/3 which will enforce a change in the constitution
    3. Gotabaya will be tried in International War Crimes Tribunal (already Rajapaksa brothers cannot travel to US & EU)
    4. Evidence of corruption in Kerawalapitiya , Narth. power plants, WiMax project will surface to the public

    • Chandrika Kumarathunge

Do you have any brains or at least common sense? Getting 2/3 in General Election my foot!

    • Asoka P

Andrew, you should get together with Feroz, and start writing the ‘election rigging’ scripts for your posts to Sunday Leader for publication after the Parliamentary election.

If Sunday Leader wish to provide a more accurate pre-election opinion poll, they would engage guys in Kelaniya University who conducted a survey of some 15,000 people from a number of demographies prior to the last Presidential Election.

I think Andrew’s opinion is influenced by nonsensical ‘analyst’ predictions in western media on the outcome of that election – that is – its being a closely run thing. On the other hand the Kelaniya University survey prediction was accurate to within a few percentage points.

      • Ravin

Asoka P:No need to be a rocket scientist to predict the SL election results predictions indeed given by Basil to that so called prof. of Kelani university. They preplanned it to accuracy as the rusults are engineered by none other than Basil. Keep believing the….Sl will be a failed state by the time (IF) MR completes his 2nd term.

        • Asoka P

Not Basil again !!! Surely, you should be able to find some other bogyman.

Ravin, in a few days we will be able to see the contents of the petition to Supreme Court challenging the result.

I suspect SF camp will be looking for some excuses to avoid looking like fools in front of the Supreme Court. May be the UNP could suggest few excuses; they are running away from SF at great speed.

        • ed

any idiot who has followed previous elections and the way the results was been broadcasted, can understand that this election was rigged,

They way the results came out, the order it came out, times all point towerds a robbed election

        • Asoka P

Only a few days to go – we shall see who got duped.

By the way, are you going to publish contemptible stuff to denigrade the Supreme Court when the judgement does not go your way?

        • pambi

If you think S. Lankan isnt ALREADY a failed state, dream on.

    • By Golly, Gee, you sure make my day, in fact, I had sent in my application to be a prison guard at the Hague for war criminals, Sinhala section. A cigarette will be 1000 USD, a Women in the cell 5000.00 I’ll send all the money back to the servicemen, who bravely served Lanka, when these buggers were highflying around the world with our poor Lankans money.

      • pambi

Not easy to be a prison guard at the Hague: You need the following:

1.. Two letters of recommendation. One from OBummer the US Prez and the other from Navavi Pillai-UNHCR rep
        2. A spoken/written knowledege of at least 2 Eurozone languages.
3.Have a white skin OR belong to a minority community .

        • pambi

Oh I forgot the most important requirement.

          4. Be a woman. If not, at least look and act like one.The stupider the better.

  9. FEROZ AUSTRALIA

WHo xcan prove that MR got 68 % by democratic means?.
Basil manipulated everything with criminal mind.Who needs this criminals to rule our country again, definitely other criminals.
Democratic loving peaceful educated poeple wont agree with this fascist rule.

I am sure they are planning another High tech drama in April.
EC should act to protect democracy in this country or go to hell with all this regime.
MR regime will not be forgiven by future generation for all their acts.

    • jolly seeya

      Election commissioner can !

    • Asoka P

Actually I am sick of continually hearing this stuff about election rigging, Feroz, without substantial evidence being put forward. Please don’t treat people in Sri Lanka and Leader readers as a bunch of idiots who would readily swallow thisrubbish.

Lets wait and see the substance of the petition to Supreme Court by the supporters of SF. They have very little evidence to backup these claims, and now they will be looking for some excuse to back down.

So, the latest excuse is that, SF will not be able to, or he will refuse to sign the petition because he is detained.

    • Feroz, he’s just taken over the Media, ordered 21 million gold statues of King Mahinda, all sri Lankans are obliged to have a statue 3000.00 USD, if no person is in possession, he’ll get a beating and maybe raped by Mervyn Mama.

    • Citzen Silva

Basil is Mr 10 – 30%. Basil’s net worth is now north of US $ 30 million. To keep the money flowing, this avaricious s.o.b. spent about Rs 300 million (mostly domestic & foreign contributions, excludes the value of state resources used/plundered during the campaign), mostly to grease all the key people.

      • Citzen Silva

btw way, a favoured tactic of Basil, Namal and other Rajapukkas is to use Dhammika Perera (casino operator, gangster and current BOI chairman) as front man in land purchases.

The former Australian embassy opposite the Colombo Museum is one such money laundering scheme. After buying up many prime pieces of land, in the run up to the election extremely large sums of money was repatriated to overseas Rajapukka/Horapakse accounts with the connivance of Cabraal from the Central Bank.

    • Cherrybrook

  10. Asoka P

Yes, lets talk about corruption. For many years in Sri Lanka, the ‘war’ was a money making machine for a few in Colombo. During those years, young people from villages were sacrificed in a futile ‘war’ effort while people in Colombo had great parties, dances as well as big weddings.

The UNP was all about civil society, high morals and pandering to western players; the same players who constantly displayed breath taking hypocrisy when it comes to human rights and war crimes.

People in villages wokeup, finally realising that their political masters did not have the ‘political will’ to eliminate LTTE terror, or to eradicate corruption that led to poorly equiped, low morale armed forces.

So those people elected Mahinda Rajapaksa; to his credit he addressed those failures. He may be accused of corruption, nepotism etc., but the ordinary people continue to ask – what is the difference?? – and has he not delivered ??

These two questions, SF failed to answer honestly – he should have known better than anybody – as he was a top brass under several other political masters who failed miserably to support the war effort.

  11. Tony

Quite apart from the anti-democratc thuggery involved, the Rajapaksa government (I know, I know — there are some government ministers who are not Rajapaksas) is behaving with incredible stupidity. Whatever there is to be gained from dragging General Fonseka out of his meeting as a means of arresting him, there is vastly more to be lost. Even if the allegations against him are true, behaving like this is still incredibly stupid. President Rajamugabe will very soon find that the country’s few international friends are, wonder of wonders, rogue nations.

For half a century after independence, despite all sorts of impediments, Sri Lanka remained a shining example of democratic socialism. How little time it takes to throw all that away.

  12. Dilshan

Most of the Indigneous Tamils are GOING BACK to their Temples.

  13. Sri Lankan

SEING THE COMMENTS ONLY ONE THING COME TO MY MIND. SRI LANKANS ARE AN UNGRATEFULLY BUNCH. ONE DAY A MAN IS HAILED AS A HERO AND THE NEXT A TRAITOR. THIS IS WILL BE SAME KIND OF COMMENTS WE WILL READ WHEN MAHINDA LOSES POWER BY ELECTION OR BY AGE. IF IT WAS OKAY TO GET THE DIRTY JOB BY SOLDIERS THEN IT IS ALSO OKAY TO HEAR THE SAME. WHAT IS WRONG BY TELLING THE WORLD WE BOBMED CADERS DIED ALONG WITH THE INNOCENT. YES WE RAPED WOMEN CAUSE OUR SOLDIERS WERE AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILIES FOR A LONG TIME. YES WE KILLED THE CHILDREN AND PREGNENT WOMEN BECAUSE WE HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE OF CHILDREN AND WOMEN BLOWING THEM SELF UP. THERE IS NO CRIME BEING A SOLDIER THEY TOOK THE ORDERS IF THE PERSON ELECTED TO LOOK AFTER THE WELL BEING MAKES THE CALL THEY ACT. SO GENERAL WAS GOOD WHEN HE DID ALL THE DIRTY JOBS AND NOW THE LEADERS DON’T WANT THE TRUTH TO COME OUT WHICH IS ALREADY IN EVERYONE’s MIND. LET’s ACCEPT THAT WE ARE BABARIANS AND WOULD NOT GET CIVILIZED IN ANY NEAR FUTURE.

    • SACHI

      I totally agree with you…..

    • Kalag

All these attrocities were done by LTTE. Sri Lankan army is well disciplined and they saved over 300000 Tamils from LTTE, risking their own life.

    • Dilshan

“The Sri Lankan government said many things which were either intentionally misleading, or were lies”, the former United Nations’ spokesperson in Sri Lanka, Gordon Weiss.

      Evil Buddhism Kills & Lies.

    • amaru

Barbarians. Hmm….Cant deny our roots. After all, we descended from the Yakkas. Our Veddah ancestors are still with us and we like to talk of them proudly. If not for the Britishers we will ll still be roaming about naked with only combs in our long hair and eating the flesh of our enemies. That reminds me….Im hungry and I need to go out and hunt that enemy now like what both sides in this drama are hell-bent on doing now.

  14. WP

Leela, Please do not forget the efforts General has taken to fight & defeat LTTE. By this I do not say that everything he has done is correct. But please give him due respect. People in this land easily forget the good that one does; they only look at the wrong.

    • Mature

We all are ready to give the due respect one deserves. At the same time one who receives should know how to protect that. He doesn’t know that. If he did he would never enter politics. By entering sri lankan bipartisan politics one should never expect respect & vice versa. In that UNPers will only respect members of UNP & SLFPers members of SLFP. This is the truth. Before entering politics he was everybody’s man, but now….. You don’t need much brain to realize this. A lot of people who foresaw this damage, asked him not to enter active politics. Unfortunately he didn’t have that intellect & asked for the trouble now he is experiencing.

  17. hay guys!!!
Don’t be too immotional. We sri Lankans never had a GREAT history. sons killed fathers to capture the kindom! brohers killed each other to be kings ! It had always been the case in the history that one won by killing another ! WILL THAT CHANGE NOW???
after all, this is still the same old srilanka!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Jilmart

By Golly, Gee, you sure make my day, in fact, I had sent in my application to be a prison guard at the Hague for war criminals, Sinhala section. A cigarette will be 1000 USD, a Women in the cell 5000.00 I’ll send all the money back to the servicemen, who bravely served Lanka, when these buggers were highflying around the world with our poor Lankans money.

    Sadistic Personality Disorder

    Truth is out there..

  19. Asoka P

So where is the media censorship??? Reading the stuff that is published as ‘comments’ in this website, some quite defamatory to named indivduals, I come to see that SL media enjoys far more freedom than in many western nations.

There is abosolutely no chance that some of these comments will ever get through the filters that are in place of any well known media organisations in the west.

If someone disagrees, please fell free to contradict me by naming a media organisation in UK, the birthplace of modern parliamentary democracy.

  20. Kingkong

Politics aside, what I am worried is that JVP will drag in this poor lady Anoma into politics like her husband. They want to hang on to somebody since they don’t have anyone to lead. UNP did a wise thing by going back to its Elephant. JVP is always destructive. I am sure that immediately after the general, when they have failed to get any seat, they will start strikes and disrupt studies in the university etc. This is the only field they know, destruction! I feel sorry for Anoma , now she is halfway through to politics – I see Somawansa is standing close to her. He will mislead her the same way he did to the General. Anoma please take care of this selfish rascal!

  21. Amlbiso

    agree with you Shiva.

  22. cp

I too agree with you shiva. Mrs. Fonseka must not give up. Mahinda thinks that his family are the only candidate who can contest for the election. He thinks this is his family country. Must learn them good lesson and show them this is Sri Lankans coun try. He is shame. Not a respectable president for the nation. Even the people who voted to MR now changing and making complain about the Fonseka’s arrest. This is political revenge to prevent him contesting for the genenral election. MR knows that he is a big challenger who can do somethin agaist them.

  23. Orpheus Perera

I agree with Kalag, but I don’t disagree with Prabath. Sharron, Rassaia and Siva also make some sense. What I can’t understand is what happened to SF? I watched him getting a meddle from MR after the war. I thought he was given a promotion too. But what made SF think he can win the election, when he had no experience in politics and he was far away from general public. I think he should have never contested for the presidency so soon. He should have contested under UNP in the general election and establish himself. Some of the statement he made was dangerous to the stability and the unity of the nation. He also forgot that JVP was as destructive as LTTE. He betrayed the people who gave him the opportunity to show his colours in the war front, whereas General Kobbakaduwa who would have saved the country long time ago, was betrayed by politicians(and secret service), who was blown to death by LTTE(there are reasons to believe some one within tipped off LTTE of his movements).
It is a sorry status, we thought we will have some peace after 30 years. We all know that the west(lead by Norway) was keen in dividing the country. I have written many letters to Lankaweb against them. I am sure there were some foreign elements behind this sad situation and hope this will not lead to a division of the country and nullify the victory over the terrorist. I still believe SF received more votes than unbiased people anticipated. He has only GCE(OL/AL) and trained to be a soldier. Of course Hon. D. S. Senanayake and Hon.R. Premadasa did not have a degree in Law or economics. But they had long standing political experience to be able to become heads of a state like Sri Lanka, not a Latin American country or Philippines.
Let me end up my comment by saying, it is sad to see some people who can’t rationalise the other writers, use “filth” in this column. It is sad to see the words used to describe Gotabaya and Mahinda who had to fight with foreign forces such as India and the West while giving the leadership to the armed forces to eliminate the terrorist within a short period of four years while attending to many other economics issues during a worldwide recession.

  24. Dilshan

Just before the Election; Rajapaksas CAME to know the Reality……… If they Lose the Election, then They are all Finsihed from this wonderful World.

That is why, they will hold on to this power, like Putin in Russia. Rajapaksas will be on power IN TURN one after the other.

Ranil and Co, has to yawn after yawn till they reach graveyard.

  25. Randy Mathew

A TRUE WAR HERO TREATED LIKE A CRIMINAL BY A BUNCH OF VILLAGE GODAYA THUGS IN POWER. WHAT A DISGRACE. SRI LANKANS SHUDDER TO THINK OF ANOTHER 6 YEARS OF CORRUPTION, VIOLENCE,DISAPEARANCES, EXTRA-JUDICIAL KILLINGS, MEDIA BASHINGS, ECONONOMIC MIS-MANAGEMENT, SHEER ARROGANCE & THE LIKE. SURELY THIS IS SRI LANKAS WORST REGIME EVER. WHEN IS JUSTICE EVER GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE LONG SUFFERING PEOPLE OF SL ? HOW DARE DO A BUNCH OF VILLAGE THUGS HOLD THAT COUNTRY TO RANSOM & RUIN IT ? AT THE END OF THE 6 YEARS, EVEN THE UNP WILL FIND IT HARD TO RESURRECT THE ECONOMY. OBVIOUSLY THESE SCUMBAGS ARE NOT FROM GOOD FAMILIES. THEY ARE AS BAD AS THE TIGERS.

    • Towna

SL costitutes a majority of village GODAYAS & minority of town BAIYAS. We have to convert this village GODAYAS into town BAIYAS sooner to overcome that problem. Otherwise this problem will go on. We, as town BAIYAS have to take a stern action against this village GODAYAS to topple this village GODAYA’s government. Otherwise this village GODAYA will not keep even some ‘KATU’ for the town BAIYAS (for us) to lick.

  29. babaputha

    Very interesting development

  30. SK

    Well said.

GOTA & Basil are the two main culprits who has instigated all the problems with SF. Many stories are surfacing on ground that GOTA is demanding the leading businessmen in bargaining their lands for cheap. This is surfacing in CBO, Kalutara etc,.

Biggest question, why Sri Lanka needs to sign a deal for US $ 300 Mn defence deal with RUSSIA. Since the LTTE war has ended, country should look for economic development.

  31. Psycho

Ladies & Gents, no point barking around, the caravan goes on!
SF supporters are “Urban Elites” , “Thambiyas”, “Eelam Dreamers” and JVP thugs.
Most if not all these minorites would have fought the Eelam war only in front of the TV, blogs like this and in armchair discussions.
The nation has spoken the rest is sour grapes, hence lets move on.

Now JVP thugs are having parades, Eelam Dreamers of the Diaspora are having parades, joined for a common cause and everyone knows what this unholy alliance is all about.

  32. SHM

I wonder why Buddhists have more faith in Hindu Kovils than their own Pansals. When in trouble they run to Hindu deities seeking help. However, on the other hand I never see any Hindus patronizing the Buddhist Pansals. It is a sight to watch Anoma dancing the devil at the Kovil seeking Fonseka’s release!

  33. SHM

Psycho, well said man! the majority of the Sri Lankans have already written off the ex General, During the presidential election he lost his own birth place Ambalangoda. All those who demand his release are just doing a lip-service and nobody is serious. I don’t know about Anoma. Now, she is breaking coconuts in dozens at Hindu Kovils, posing away for the press!
