An Oath Of Allegiance And A Resignation Letter

By Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema

The UNP Working Committee Thursday  decided to get an oath of allegiance  and a letter of resignation from the party’s candidates contesting the forthcoming general election.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that one of the party’s Kegalle District parliamentarians, Champika Premadasa, informed the Working Committee that the UNP Kegalle District Working Committee had decided to ask all candidates from the district to hand in an oath of allegiance to the party and a letter of resignation giving powers to the UNP to request his/her resignation from the party if such a need arose.

Premadasa had proposed to the Working Committee that this decision be adopted with regard to all UNP contestants at the forthcoming general election. Attanayake said the UNP Working Committee had agreed to this proposal.

“This move is expected to prevent UNPers from crossing over to the government for perks and privileges after being elected to parliament through the UNP. It is unfair by the party and especially by the people who vote for them,” he said.

Attanayake added that Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed that the contestants also pledge their allegiance to the party before the people at the district-level conventions that are to be held prior to the general election.

Kegalle District Parliamentarian Kabir Hashim maintained that the district working committee arrived at the decision to hand in an oath of allegiance and a letter of resignation on January 30, and that all UNP contestants from Kegalle have already handed in the necessary documents.

Better late than never.A great decission and should be implemented for all candidates through out the Island.PLEASE dont accept THE GEMBAS who crossed over to the government EVEN if they agree to the new terms(Old under President Jayawardena and a decission that could only have been made by a person like him who saw years into the future)

This is five star democracy UNP style!

      • Ariya

“The UNP Working Committee Thursday decided to get an oath of allegiance and a letter of resignation from the party’s candidates contesting the forthcoming general election.”

First; think of a Oath of Allegiance to Sri Lanka!
Second; Add that none of the UNPers would ever go round the world to discredit our Motherland!
Third; Add that UNP politicos won’t run to the nearest western embassy and cry against our country!
4th, 5th, 6th etc, etc LOOK into your own hearts to determine, whether you are REAL Sri Lankans or just acting?

    • HUD

If this was done by SLFP, UNPers will say that this is a grave violation of rights and huge threat to democracy.
In fact, this will not work as someone who want’s to defect can go to court seeking invalidation of that kind of resignation letters.

      Resultig in
      1. Further reduction of the enthusiasm of the candidates.
      2. Decline in wasting of large sum of money for preferential votes.
      3. Drowning of the UNP to a degree difficult to emerge as champions.
      4. The threat to the opposition leadership of Ranil will escalate.
      5. Crossovers of imminent figures of UNP before the election.
      6. MR & men will persuade the winnables of UNP to restrain for more lucrative opportunities than becoming a weaker opposition member of the parliament.

At the end it will show a move with a mixed characteristics.

Its high time that the SLFP put a stop to all these high jinxs of crossovers and the likes.

The masses are with Mahinda and he must make a new Constitution as soon as GE is over. He does not need to put any of those UNPers crossovers into his new government, they have shown just how like dogs they are to be bought over so easily for a few bones in perks. Most maintained that they crossed-over for the good of the nation to support Rajapaka family to win the war. That is now done so throw these people back to the masses.

In a new Constitution there is no need for the wasted cost of more elections. The masses do not need to be dragged time and again from their homes and jobs to show how greatfull they are to Mahinda. The whole nation is with him and honours him for liberating the Motherland

Enough is enough and new Constitution must do away with ALL elections for good unless opposition can gather (say ) 50% of voters into a petition to present to H E Mahinda.

There would be huge cost savings and maybe even Parliament is not needed soon as some good supporters can be made into permament Cabinet to help HE Mahinda

Getting this sort of a guarantee in writing is fine, but this should be a gentleman’s agreement. Surely, if the free loaders like Moragoda, GL Pieris, Bogollagama, Rambukwella, Mahinda Samarasinghe, SB Dissanayake and the likes had stuck to their guns – the UNP may have come back to power sooner than later. But these gutless nitwits are so greedy for power and money that they could not wait their turn. And history has taught us many lessons what happens to people who cannot wait for their turn. “WHAT GOES ROUND, COMES AROUND TOO”. It would be comfortint to see this happen soon.

  3. Gamini Ranjith

    UNP is already worried about the big loss they are going to incur in the election & defections after the elections due to the poor leadership & lack of political direction.They have to change the Ranil & Tissa leadership;

    • pukasahib

No my dear. Its the government that is planing another vote rigging plan.If you are so confident of the 2/3s why not implement the independent commissions BEFORE the GE.Why do they want to do it after the GE.
See things with a clearly.Dont look at situations with blue, green or red eyes.

  4. harry

This is a good move. However it is important to make sure that can not be sucessfully challenged in a court of law.

    • Satina Junaid

This is true. See what happened when these cross overs were taken to courts. The crossovers won the day. Has the UNP changed its consitutions and done the needful to get rid of such rascals in such an even again

  5. Dilshan

Hulugalle insists that no other organizations made such claims in the past 8 months since the war, the paper said, quoting “[t]here were so many foreign and local journalists allowed in those areas. Therefore if there was any truth in this no one would have waited for 8 months to talk about it. And we have had no such complaints coming from any organization.”

    HISTORY REPEATS.

REMINDS ME OF JR’S INFAMOUS UNDATED LETTERS OF RESIGNATION……….

  7. DR Dasarath Jayasuriya

Tragic decision if true. I thought the UNP was at the zenith of democratic parties in Sri Lanka. This shows that they have no confidence in the people that they select to contest the general election representing the grand old party. There is also a legal complication. The person who wants to cross over can say that they want to withdraw the resignation lettr. Under law, as the party had not executed the resignation letter at the time they received it (ie. before/soon after the general election), the person who wants to cross over has a case. Undated letters of resigantions have no legal currency and there are many test cases thet could be referred to, where the letters have been challenged in courts. Best ditch this self-defeating idea and face the election with confidence.

    • lankawatcher

In the present context with MR and his siblings throwing millions to attract members of other political parties, this is the best strategy that can be adopted to counter their moves. After all, why shouldn’t the UNPers give an oath of allegiance to the party and hand over unsigned resignation letters if they want to get nominated from the UNP ticket? If after jumping sides they still want to retain the UNP membership just to retain their seat, then getting an undated resignation letter will teach these two timers a good lesson.

      • Gota Supporter

UNPers only jump sides to help the Nation, they know that Rajapasa family under H E President Mahinda will develop the nation and give $4,000 per head income in next 7 years.
With Mahinda to develop the country and Gota to develop the security we will be wealthy and secure

    • so you think this is a tragic decision. the tragedy is not this decision dr. dj, the tragedy is promising everything under the moon and the sun to the voters and after being elected to the parliament jumping ship for some filthy lucre.

that my dear dr. is more than despicable, like selling your mother or sister to the highest bidder.

  8. Thamu

Already lost the game. UNP is cock sure that Mahinda will win the race to Parliament & form the government.

    • lankawatcher

Mahinda is going to repeat the previous vote rigging in style! UNP is cocksure about that! Mahinda’s lackeys say they will get 2/3rds, sure they will as the computers of the EC are at their beck and command!

      • Gota Supporter

        The masses are with Mahinda
He will get 4/5th majority and then can get rid of all opposition and rule for Rajapaksa for evermore

  9. Sinhabahu

It’s a very good decision, this is what J.R. Jayawardena adopted in 1977 and it worked well. I can’t understand why UNP didn’t follow the tradition. Had they did it all that 18 members fished by Mahinda Rajapaksa wouldn’t have happened? Jaya wewa. We can’t allow politicians to fool their voters anymore.

  10. Deshadrohiya

Good and a sad move, it clearly shows our political culture is courrpted and manupulated. But its a good move too because in this election system people choose the party more than people. So at any cost individuals must adhere to the party desision. If party is not doing the right thing people will use their vote against them in the next comming elections.
Even not democratic this is a good move till we have a ethical democratic society.

  11. deva

A very good move.No elected MP has a moral right to defect after being elected on a party ticket . He should resign from his parlimentary seat and seek a fresh mandate from the people as was done in the past. Legislation should be introduced in the next parliment to annul this anomoly that makes a farce of good governance.

  12. Kingkong

JR style resignation letter is back! But the best way to handle cross over is to bring legistlation to effectively prevent this. People elect a candidate for what he is and changing colour or party later on is notr acceptale by any means.

    • pukasahib

KINGKONG DO YOU THINK THAT MAHINDAS GOVERNMENT WILL CHANGE ANYTHING IN PARLIAMENT WHICH MIGHT BE DETRIMENTAL TO THEM.THEY WANT TO RIG THIS POLE AS WELL .THAT IS WHY THEY SAY THAT THEY WILL BRING THE 17TH AMENDMENT AFTER THE GENERAL ELECTION.

      • Gaminic

        Ane palayan puka,
Your party could not win even after the unholy alliance with SF,JVP & LTTE because people rejected the bankrput leaders.Whe you can’t dance you will say the world was not level.Ha’Ha

      • Gota Supporter

They do not need to rig anything as the masses are behind the Rajapakse family

See how even Charmal is building a huge International Airport and made sure that every irrigation ditch is well cleaned out, and Basil since he became a National list MP is re-building the North and East almost single handed.

Gota has given up a nice home in the US of A to risk his life and give security to the masses by organising largest army in the world relative to our population. Now few politicians can claim such dedication to the masses.

Face it, one day we will be happy for this Nation to be known throughout the world as Mahindaland.

    • Reasoner

Nowadays people should vote assuming the candidate will crossover someday. At the end they should earn what they lose in the election campaign for their preferential votes. If they can’t earn sitting in the opposition, they should have the freedom to crossover and earn that. Else the preferential vote system should be completely abolished and made the candidate impossible to expend any money during the campaign. After all why should somebody expend a large sum of money over this campaigning. To serve the country..?

  13. dagobert

    UNP practice what you preach.

  14. Eththa Thiththai

This is like “Atheesarayata amude geheemak”. These crossovers are occurring mainly due to the preferential vote system. Because if one expends a lot , wins and end in the losing party; he will try to crossover for his benefit. Because of that this may harm the enthusiasm of the candidates in election propaganda in someway. Now these buggers know if one can get sufficient number of votes even if they defeat they can go to the parliament and crossover. Therfore end result may be not so good for the party. But it is a very good decision when the country is concerned.

  15. MotleyFOOL

This country has swept into anarchy. In the absence of Justice and when the court system has collapsed, does the UNP, SLFP, JVP, SLMC, or any other twits in other party expect justice to be done in executing something simple as a written decree, a written agreement a simple tort to hold merit in any court in Sri lanka. All you jokers who cannot even define the work “Allegiance” in any language should tell their respective party wigs to shove this affidavit up their rear where the sun doesn’t shine. I’m sure Ranil can proudly take the lead in this aspect.

  16. samuel

It is a good move. But better if approach the legal counsel to see the validity of that or whether it could be challenged later.

  17. sena

The UNP and JVP should at the general election request the unp and slfp voters not to vote for any of the hi-jumpers. These parasites should be removed from politics for ever. Genuine slfpers should vote for a genuine SLFP cadidate likewise unp voters should vote for a geuine UNPer . These power hungry, corrupt politicians make a mockery of democracy. Act wise and educate the innocent voters

    • Hacker

The people with a past history can be identified, but others?

      • Gota Supporter

UNPers only crossed over to help Mahinda win the war. They must be praised and rewarded for following the will of the people who know that Mahinda is like a father to the nation.
Mahinda needs to step hard on any opposition after GE to ensure that they do not spoil his vision

  18. Tyrrol Fernando

Whats the use! A guy who wishes to cross over for money will anyway go & system will prevent legal process!

  19. Timtohy YU

My good friends and colleagues of the UNP, we cannot buy Loyalty, Loyalty lies on leadership.. If the Goat pays better we can help the guys desert the ranks like Dissanayake, who now lauds the Doctorate of the Lumumba University, maybe he had dreams if such. Fight a loyal battle, win and implement our programs of development and no more wasting time, our Lanka needs good Yeomanship and good captains, NOT THIEVES!!!

    • Gota Supporter

Here here…get rid of all the parliamentarians by stopping any more elections. The Rajapakse family is big enough to run the nation without any pesky elections

  20. justitia

Tnis is a correct decision. It will eliminate those who wish to become MPs only to jump and support any regime which will make them useless “ministers” who are only bootlickers and ‘yes men’ with opportunities to make millions of black money along with jobs for their kith and kin.

    • Condosthara Mervyn

Aney mei Kooluwantah waddi nathuwatha wedda muntah! Mun’num maha prassidha pisso ralak’nei. Rupiyal Seeyatath (100/=) MINIMARANA bauddha appatta meuwaa GAJJADHA?

  21. Sherman Silva

Hello everyone, I am Mervin Silva’s brother. Don’t mess around with us too much. I will Rs.80 Million that Fonseka will not be out in time for April elections. Any takers? Let me know via presidents email. OK.

  22. Dushantha Kurera

Another patch work job by the UNP leadership. If the leader is dynamic and is a true leader, nobody has to give resignation letters as the membership will rally round the a true leader !!!…… This shows how bankrupt the UNP is and how low it has gone under Ranils Leadership. ….. Wake Up UNP !!!… from your slumber and focus on Part policies without running behind Swans and Hare ……………..its not your food habits !!!!!……….. Think Green , Eat Green, Live Green and Trumphet like a True Elephant ….. Not with Pants down !!!

    • Idea of the Day

This can be done by isolating Ranil in the parliamentary election. So the Colombo UNPers should not vote for Ranil but somebodyelse. Problem is he will be appointed from the “list”. So islandwide UNPers should be very careful not to go for bonus seats. But still a newly elected MP will resign & ask Ranil to lead. Therfore UNPers better avoid voting in this general election & regroup under a new leadership sometime later.

  23. Gota Supporter

    Indeed

Masses know that they should not vote for any opposition as they are in bed with traitor.

Better if SLFP is rewarded with all seats so Mahinda can lead the nation free of politics.

    • Jagan

Yes, UNPers should refrain from voting this time only to protect their party. Then Somawansa or Sambanthan will be elected as the opposition leader. Ranil will go home. A stronger opposition will anyway be made when there is no Ranil.

  24. Iban Batuta

The need today is not the UNP but a strong opposition to challenge MR. All the MR opposition should come together as a new party under a new symbol to make something to happen.

    • Kaldera

Totally agree. Nothing is eternal as Buddha says. UNP & Elephant too are facing the same fate today thanks to a power greedy weaker leadership. As it goes he will end up as the Opposition leader again.

  25. Sadly, one cannot legislate for Loyalty. The type of people we have now as politicians can easily be bought for money by any one, especially if one is forced to wallow in the opposition for a long time and when the bait from the other side is stronger, naturally he will jump to that side and also become some sort of Minister. Greed has no boundary. It is a sad state of affairs when one thinks of the decent, strong politicians we have had in those days where loyalty to one’s party was considered of paramount importance. But then as time went on things deteriorated to such an extent that bunches of MPs started to jump in search of better perks instead of doing any service to the people who voted for them. They say that shamelessness is even bigger than Mudliyarship.

  26. Deshamamaka

News – ” Sri Lanka opposition launches signature campaign for Fonseka’s release”

If UNP and SF supporters are going to sign a petition with 1 million signatures asking release of Fonseka, we, 6 million who voted against this betrayer should rally around to sign a petition against the release of him ! Make your voice !

    • Casual Observer

Seems to me that the only way that UNP will ever come to power is if Mahinda crosses over to lead them to victory.
Though sadly as I remember it, the UNP were no angels when it came to misuse of State resorces, bribery and corruption. Its just that nowdays we shrug over billions and before we used to weep over millions

  27. TORONTO GUY

dont woorry be happy very soon in sri lankan parliment there going to more
Ministers then Mps. and SL will be soon called as KINGDOM OF SINHA BAHU RAJAPAKSE. take my word.

  28. R.M.B Senanayake

The UNP is forced to take this step because the Supreme Court ahs not upheld the common law right for any voluntary association to terminate membership of those who violate the rules and regulations of the association. Without this common law right being re-establshed the cross-overs wi continue. If there is evidence that the cross-over was influenced by corruption then the Bribery Commission should investigate.
