Can Young Iranians Singe The Beards Of The Old Guard?
Amidst mounting opposition pressure against the Iranian government, President Ahmadinejad announced to a massive crowd of cheering Iranians on the 32nd Anniversary of the Iranian Revolution that their scientists had produced ‘the first consignment of enriched 20 per cent uranium’ and put it at the disposal of their scientists. Ahmadinejad declared that Iran was now a ‘nuclear state’ and also stated that they did not want to produce a nuclear bomb.

Nuclear scientists say that enriched uranium of 80 per cent grade would be required to produce a nuclear bomb. US and Western governments believe that Iran is heading in this direction.
Failure of UN sanctions
US and Western governments for many years have been attempting to dissuade Iran from going ahead with this enrichment programme but Iran has insisted that it is within the laws of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) — the UN watchdog on nuclear proliferation — to enrich uranium for civilian use. Iran claims that it was the refusal by the IAEA and the West to supply enriched uranium for its research reactor for making medical products that made them launch this enrichment project.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has passed resolutions calling on Iran to halt its enrichment programme which Iran has refused to comply with. Some international trade sanctions are already in force but Russia and China with their veto powers have so far refused to apply harder sanctions probably because of trade and economic relations with Iran.
Five countries have been negotiating with Iran to strike a deal on enrichment but without success and now the issue is whether US President Barack Obama will move strongly in the UN for harder sanctions such as closing of ports to Iranian ships, oil and gas investments, and penalising banks doing business in Iran etc. But China and Russia have been resisting such hard sanctions but Western reports hint that Russia may go along with harder sanctions after the revelation recently of another secret nuclear facility inside a mountain in the village of Qom. China is likely to exercise its veto in the UNSC because of its dependence on Iranian oil and gas.

There are counter arguments against sanctions being imposed on Iran because it would result in the most vulnerable of Iranians being adversely affected and not the government of Ayatollah Khomeini, the supreme commander.
Iran and Sri Lanka have been drawing close to each other in recent times and Iran has provided $ 400 million for a power station while supplying oil for seven months on credit. The Iranian government and the Sri Lankan government also seem to be facing similar predicaments in recent times.
In June last year President Ahmadinejad won the Iranian presidential election with a comfortable victory but his opponent Mir Hossein Mousavi who had played a key role in the founding of the Islamic Republic said the election was a fraud and it had been rigged. Hundreds of thousands of young Iranians — almost 50 per cent of Iranians being under 30 years — took to the streets and have been staging violent demonstrations since the election.
On Wednesday the demonstrators once again staged a massive protest in Tehran against the government but reports said that the government was able to stage an even bigger rally using the resources of the state. About 30 persons have been killed since the June election. The opposition estimates 70 such deaths and 200 activists being held in prison.

The opposition leader Mousavi challenged the government on Republic Day with daring statements such as: ‘The Iranian Republic has failed to eradicate the roots of tyranny’ and dictatorship’; ‘the revolution has failed to achieve its goals’. Some such critics have been convicted as ‘being enemies of God’. With such a popular movement — called the Greens — gathering momentum some analysts say that harder sanctions will be counter productive because it may result in an upsurge of nationalism to rally round the government against foreigners attempting to impose their will on Iran.
Sri Lankans will be familiar with a similar backlash against the US and other Western nations when they attempted to coerce the Rajapaksa government to halt the military offensive in the name of human rights but would have also provided a respite for the LTTE terrorists.
Ahmadinejad and the Iranian theocracy that rules Iran keeps going on the anti-Israeli and to a lesser extent, anti-American rhetoric. The Iranian President has even threatened to wipe out Israel off the map — now being denied by Iran and even some Iranian supporters here. The belligerent theocracy fought a bitter 10 year war against Iraq under Saddam Hussein that accounted for the loss of lives of hundreds of thousands of Iranians.
The Supreme Commander Ayatollah Khomeini, a day before the anniversary celebrations announced that ‘Iran will punch the arrogant Western powers in a way that will leave them stunned’. He was anticipating the announcement of the success in achieving 20 per cent enrichment of uranium. All this will obviously cause grave concern in Israel and even among neighbouring Arab states. Iran has been accused of regional destabilisation in Iraq, Israel and Lebanon and it has two fierce proxies, the Hezbollah and Hamas dedicated to eliminate Israel.
What would the reaction of President Obama and his western allies be to this new development? Impose sanctions that could cripple Iran or hope and wait for a young Iranian revolution to cripple the belligerent mullahs?
Iran is under economic sanction for over 30 year now. Nothing will deter their forward march in achieving its rightful objectives. Late Imam Khomeini once said that these sanctions are blessings in diguise for the country to liberate from dependancy.

He has quoted from people in the past who have promised to do this and also said that people have moved on from this. Ahmadinejad has in fact criticised holocaust deniers in the past.
Just like the pope, in 2008 quoted someone else saying that Isalam is an evil religiion. CNN and BBC of course repeat this claim. and people buy this bull

I think Iran and the Government have the right for their self determination, including their Nuke power and its enrichment. Regarding the internal problem, let Iran solve by their own way and doing how to solve their internal problem. I know Islam and its tuition is rights and valid. So its Iran and People of Iran who have the rights for their way and choices. Regarding US and western so concern with Iran, why?? because they are so greedy and want to control their interest both political and economics in mideast and the region, it have so long time they take so alot advantages.
