The Fonseka Fiasco And How Mahinda Rajapaksa Lost The Plot

by The End (finem.wordpress.com)

In the late hours of yesterday, Military Police arrested the former Commander of the Army, (Retd.) Gen. Sarath Fonseka for the following charges.

Politicking whilst in uniform.
Conspiring against the Commander-in-Chief whilst in Service.
Harboring more than 1,500 deserters whilst on service.
Corrupt practices in military procurements.

As for the charges, I’m sure the first and fourth are true, and whilst I’m not sure of the number of deserters he was harboring, I’m sure he might have been harboring some. Almost all the commanders of the forces in the last two-three decades had some kind of weapons deal thrown against them. Almost all of them were misusing power at one point or the other. To say otherwise, is to be naive. With huge power comes the huge opportunity to be corrupt. And they generally are.

That doesn’t fly only for those in the highest echelons in the military. The same applies to almost all those is power. And in the current context, namely to those like Mahinda Rajapaksa himself, his little brotherhood of siblings and relatives. And then it trickles down to the numerous Members of Parliament, the Secretaries of the Ministries, the Chairpersons of Government bodies and so on.

But there is a nice little arrangement. They stay blind to eachother’s sins. Even when you are in the opposition. If things tend to get nasty, then you align yourself with the ones who have power for safety, like Milinda Moragoda did. Us as the mass public, generally don’t have control over this. So what we do, is to turn a blind eye to the corruption and law breaking that goes on, and hope that the powers at be would find time to serve our interests, within their busily corrupt schedule. That’s reality.

But there is a level that we tend to put up with. We worry when the powers at be come close to crossing that line. That means something is going wrong.

Mahinda and Fonseka were once good buddies. Fonseka’s appointment as the Commander of Army, was done by bringing him up the social ladder, and the push up was done by Mahinda, and then he used Fonseka in achieving the goal of the complete military annihilation of the LTTE – a goal that was made easier by the fact that the LTTE tried to kill Fonseka. In typical Fonseka fashion of I’ll-mess-you-up-if-you-try-to-mess-around-with-me, the LTTE was soon done for.

Then came in the typical Mahinda Rajapaksa fashion of use it and lose it.

Mangala Samaraweera and Sripathi Sooriyarachchi were instrumental in bringing the UPFA Government into power, and in making Mahinda President. Used them, got rid of them. Dayan Jayatillake was the little cleanup boy in Geneva. Used him, got rid of him. Fonseka was the cleanup boy for the LTTE. Used him, tried to get rid of him.

What is worrying, is that Mahinda seems to be losing it a bit. We all know that Gotabhaya, Mahinda’s scary brother, has lost the plot a long time back. Any person doubting this, has only got to go on Youtube and watch a few interviews that the Secretary of Defence has given. The manic laughter, the uncontrolled arm movement, and the anger in which he speaks shows this. Mahinda so far, was not that bad. Mahinda is more of a PR person. He is the king. And in the eyes of many, the benevolent king. The king however, has lost it.

When he voted on Januart 26, he was a tired but confident man. He had flown to India on the night before for a blessing, landing back in Sri Lanka only at 5:30 the same morning. He was then flown to Medamulana for voting. He carried his cool, did the victory sign to the media who were assembled to see him cast his vote, assured them that he is confident of a spectacular victory. And then only at one point, did he lose his cool. This shot taken just before he got into his car, shows the strain the man was in [above].

Then he went to win the election. With a margin that many, including strong supporters, found too good to be true.

Then he went and really lost it. He started going berserk in Colombo. Positioning large numbers of military personnel outside Cinnamon Lakeside, arresting journalists, sealing newspapers, the works. Mahinda 2010!

Last week, word started spreading that instructions were given to the State Intelligence Service, and namely Keerthi Gajanayake himself, were given directives to arrest Fonseka. The CID then consulted the  Attorney General Mohan Peiris, and the final consensus was not to let the civil courts deal with him, but to take the matters in front of a military tribunal. And now, Fonseka is.

The General Elections are expected early April. Just like the sweep during the Presidential Polls, Rajapaksa would carry home the elections. He might even score a 2/3 majority. What worries me is not the fact that Rajapakse has turned into a power hungry, do-what-he-wants dictator. It’s also not the fact that rule of law in constantly being undermined. Nor is it that the opposing voices and forces are being suppressed.

What worries me, is that the people are becoming more and more complacent. And complacency, is not an option.

Facts are stubborn, and so are people. Those who live by the sword die by the sword too. Gotababaya and Basil Rajapaksa should know this and protect their brother who is the president. Instead all three going wild just like “Cats on a Hot Tin Roof”. They show callous disregard to anyone who dare oppose them even in an election. They intimidate journalists and instil a kind of fear phychosis that is both threatening and primitive. All this to remain in power by hook or by crook. This behaviour is not good for them, not good for the country, not for the people and not good for our (Sri Lanka) image internationally. And what really baffles me is that these are supposed to be devout Buddhists. What more is there to say, “God..please help those who cannot help them selves”. Amen!

  2. Roshan Perera

This MAN MR will casue 1 million times more economic loss to Srilanka than what was caused by LTTE. Velupillai now does not have worry, watch from hell or heaven, the actions of srilanka;s greater destroyer.

  3. Randy Mathew

A GOVERNMENT BY THUGS FOR THE THUGS & NOT FOR THE GENERAL PEACE LOVING PEOPLE OF SL FROM ALL COMMUNITIES. SADLY SL HAS TO LIVE WITH THIS CURSED & WICKED REGIME OF THE MR DYNASTY FOR QUITE SOMETIME. WHERE IS JUSTICE ? SURELY SL DESERVES BETTER. HOW DARE DOES A BUNCH OF VILLAGE GODAYA THUGS HOLD A COUNTRY TO RANSOM & CONTINUE TO RUIN IT ? THEY ARE NOT GOOD BUDDHISTS AND CERTAINLY NOT FROM GOOD FAMILIES.

    • Dilshan

All the Sri Lankan Polititians are born for White Skin People(Males and Females) secretly or publicly.

      • elaine

dilshan you are crazy if you believe this you need to learn some history buddhism is over 5000 years old religion. Why Is buddism a curse in sri lanka? What does it matter what colour eyes or hair anyone has, it is the goodness in the heart that is important

        • Shokku Masta

Aw Shuks, Buddhism is 5,000 yeas old?? No! It is not. Much less try less than 3,000! BIG difference ne’?

        • Dilshan

Yes, Buddhism Teaching are WRONG and full of Negative of Life. Drawing men and women to LIVE like Zombies without Sex and Families. In short, Buddhism is the Curse for the Whole Human Kind.

These sort of Cowardly Religions are the ones, are really Killing people to make the whole country as their own….eg Bhutan, VietNam, Burma and many other Buddhist Countries, Islamic and Christian countries.

In Short, all Religions are Evil, but Buddhism is the Sweet Word Evil and the rest are Sword Evil.

Buddha born 2300 years ago and Jesus born 2000 years ago and Mohammad born 1200 years ago…… all these Evils born to KILL the Indigenous People and Convert the Scared and Frightened people into their own Religions.

Our Eelam Brethern were also the Victims when those Evil Mongolian Monks came to our Eelam.

    • Dilshan

Buddhism is from Mongolia with yellowish skin and most of the Monks were secretly had many wives in the villages to re-produce fair skin children for centuries. Most of the Singheela people are short and yellowish fair skin people. Buddhism is the CURSE to our Lanka.

      • paul Smith

Firstly Buddhism is from India, and I feel you don’t have even Kindergarden knowledge.
If Buddhism is a curse please tell me what releigon will work.I think you are right. It is Christianity. It is the Bible which teaches to masacare the opponents. If you want I will give the reference in the Bible.

        • Dilshan

          Please read my note above.

Also, India is you see is not the Bharath. Bharatha Land was(is) from Afgan to Burma and from Tibet to Maldives. We are all Bharatha People by Race and Gene. Our Face and Features show that.

Buddha’s birth place might be in Nepal(also in Bharatha land) and His Ancestors are from Han Royal Family(Mongolian/Gangis Khan Ancestry)

I consider All Religions are Evil. Indigenous Way of Life does bring Peace and Harmony (if Religious Evil doesn’t interfere and kill us)

      • paul Smith

Dilshan you are right. I think Christianity is more appropriate as the God instructs to masacre the opponents in the Bible . If you want I can give the references.

        • Kalag

What about Hindus? How many arms and weapons the Hindu gods have?
Muslims? Mohammed had also fought wars, I think.

    • Wimal

Cat is out from the bag, Most of the criticism for MR is merely because he is a village godaya. Nobody talks about the good things he has done during past 4 years. But we village godayas know them and back MR. What the General get is what he deserves. I trust he was not given any bones to lick

      • Viparama

        Wimal

You are correct. Most of the people use this website criticize Mahinda because of his background. Based on these criticisms some people expected that SF would win. But, not only Sinhala buddhists but also chatholics live in village voted for MR. They know who has the strength to keep the unitary system of the country.

  4. Wasalaya

Dilshan with the dark and thick skin!

From where did you get your info on Buddhism and Buddhists?

Go learn some real History and Geography, at least in a night school.

  5. Shiran

My fear is MR will become another RM( Robert Mugabe)

    • elaine

I am sorry but I have to agree the only ones that can change it is the people that are really will look after the land and the people

    • SAD

your fear should be -when Mugabe will become MR

    • Timothy YU

Off course, you are not born with initials M.R. or R.M. Mugabe Robert, either doesnt make a great difference. Chase the Burmese and Communist Chinese from Lanka and Mahinda will become a good boy. Put him in a little uniforn with professor Pieris, Dissanayake to school for a new degree Ali Baba and Tsunamoney Doctorate.

  6. SAD

However our people are the fools to vote for him. A large majority is suffering from terminal amnesia.

  7. Dr. TKPK Kaluarachchi, VIC

There is so much in comparison to be done on MR and Robert Mugabe (RM)

MR and RM are buddies though RM havnt done any sin promoting his siblings to take like 10% to 40% of national income.

They both have very common similariteies like hating the whtie clan like RM hated the white farm owners as MR hates the west and go for his friends like Iran and Myanmar – partners in chrime.

this is what RM was to do in get electedl…

On 11 March 2007, opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was arrested and beaten following a prayer meeting in the Harare suburb of Highfields. Another member of the Movement for Democratic Change was killed while other protesters were injured.Mugabe claimed that “Tsvangirai deserved his beating-up by police because he was not allowed to attend a banned rally” on 30 March 2007.

now.. just compare what MR did for the gallant soldier in General Sarath Fonseka – the countrys only 4 star general and who ended the 30 year curse of LTTE terrorism.

Robert Guest, the Africa editor for The Economist for seven years, argues that Mugabe is to blame for Zimbabwe’s economic freefall. “In 1980, the average annual income in Zimbabwe was US$950, and a Zimbabwean dollar was worth more than an American one. By 2003, the average income was less than US$400, and the Zimbabwean economy was in freefall.

ok. folks. just imgine Sri Lanka after 11 years of curse from MR regime and where it will end up as well.

    • Wimal

Sorry about this poor doctoer. SF was made a four star general by this very same MR. It was not enough for him as he needed more and more power. He demanded to make him a Field Marshal for which the strength of our army is inadequate.

As for the economy in 2005 per capita income of aSri Lankan was US$1200 and at the end o0f 2009 it moved upto US$2200. So how can you compare Mugabe with MR. And you must realise that this is with a war and the investments in giant development projects. You must face the reality by removing your green [or red] spectacles.

      • Wasalaya

Wimal, are you going on Kabarala’s statistics?

      • Dr. TKPK Kaluarachchi, VIC

        Wimal..
hey mate,, you are comments are based on that hotel accountant and a pyramid scheme racketer now put as the nations central bank ?

This man will show anything to please the Maharaja and who cared about those figures? Do you happens to talk to any of the housewifes in Colombo and you can rest assured they will curse the mother of MR several times a day in and do not want the poor lady rest in peace.

This nation will be a cursed nation with this regime and lets work together to send them packing to USA and work as rich 7-Eleven clerks and rich gas station attendants.

        • Wimal

          My dear Dr,
Don’t limit your knowlege to Colombe. Try a trip around the country and see it with your own eyes the decvelopments country has achieved.
You Colombo elites think that a sarong clad godaya is not suit to lead the country. You must respect the mandate of the majority. We village people feel the difference between pre 2005 and 2010. Can you tell me which government lowered the prices of consumables after independence. You can send slanderous comments thro. websites like this. But those are very far away from the truth. I feel more sorry about you.

        • Viparama

CBK governments (1994/2001), Ranil (2001/2004) and again CBK (2004/2005) did not have guts to implement Coal power plant at Norochchole. Upper Kotmale project faced many obstacles under their regims. Moragahakanda project has been abandoned for decades. All of these proects are now in progress. Isn’t this a developmen in your terms?

      • Janaka

Are u a veternery doctoror ……..or ????, from where u got ur doctorate, is it the same place like Dr. Mervin Silva got.

      • Peter Casie Chetty

He was never a hero. bTge real heros of the battles were the men who faced the music. The General fought battles when the LTTE were playing around with catapults. It is just that the public believed what Fredrica Jansz told them. Now the Sunday Leader like the armchair general will have to face the Judges and the music. Let us see if Mumza can dance like they did in Dublin!

  8. See how divided the Bhuddhist are now, The reason they have become
Hypocrites dont practice what Bhuddhism preaches even monks who have
become politicians for perks & power.

  9. VINTAGE VOTER

PLEASE DO NOT WRITE DISPARAGINGLY OF BUDDHISM FOR THE FAULT OF
THOSE WHO CALL THEMSELVES “SINHALA BUDDHISTS”. AS I HAVE SAID
EARLIER 80 % OF THE PEOPLE CLAIM TO BE BUDDHISTS, VIOLATE THE
“FIVE PRECEPTS” EVERY DAY. JUST TELL ME, HOW, ONE WHO IS A BUDDHIST
VISITS,NALLUR TEMPLE AND SEEKS BLESSINGS OF HINDU GODS.THEY GO
TO DEWATAGAHA MOSQUE AND SEEK THE BLESSINGS OF A “DEAD SAINT”
THEY GO TO MEET THE ARCHBISHOP AND SEEK HIS BLESSINGS AND FINALLY THEY GO TO THE TWO CHIEF BUDDHIST PRELATES FOR THE SAME
    REASONS..
AT LAST WE SEE A SILVER LINING ON THE HORIZON, BY THE VERY HARSH AND OUTSPOKEN WORDS OF THE MAHANAYAKES AND THEIR SUMMONING A SANGHA SABHA ON FEBRUARY 18TH TO DISCUSS THE
SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY.WE HOPE THEY WILL TAKE THE RIGHT DECISION AND SEE THAT THEIR DECISIONS ARE GIVEN THE DUE
    RESPECT AND OBEYED .

    • bimbi

The Maha Na Yakas are the biggest Ali Horas -like the Ayatollahs of Iran. We need to get rid of them from our politics first.

  10. London Minnal Sri

The Sinhalese people wanted Pirbakaran to be killed and the person who was hundred percent dedicated for the destruction of LTTE and their members were about to be killed by the own Sinhalese people. What a circle of events.

    • safa

too true. “kalaguna salakeemak”. they are foolish amnesic people. they lit fire crackers when Praba was killed. Did the same when SF was arrested in less than one year. Will do the same when something happened to MR. God save these people

  11. Manula

not to blame any one, we have to blame JVP and UNP due they brought General to Poltics due they cannot find a sutiable person from thier party. They make a rift between general and mahinda. HOW,WOW,CEYLON HAS CHANGED SINCE INDEPEDENCE.sri lanka is 1000 years behind western countries like USA.Canada and European union Ausralia and NewZeland in civized democratic values and respect for fundamental human rights.all people with civized values will leave the country so that lanka will go back to the times of DUTTA YA gemunu ,vijaya, and other kings.

    • Peter Casie Chetty

You have to be an idiot who sees only one side of the West the bright side. The civilised Democracies you talk about ordered the Bay of Pigs. Stop reading teh racing news and read some books on what the west has achieved and how they achieved things. The Australians wiped out all the people in Tasmania while the Americans wiped out all the Indians in Northern America. The Sinhalese have still not tried to wipe out all the Tamils in Sri lanka so be grateful for that. You education is restricted to filling forms to gain refugee status you bum licking fool.

      KOOPU,
In Srilanka Monks are respnosible for the killings. They are the ones who preech and spread hatred. Monks should just stay away from politics

  16. ….JUST TO KNOW ABOUT THE ECONOMY OF SRI LANKA DONT GO FOR ATATISTICS..JUST REDA THE EXCHANGE RATES….THIS IS ENOUGH…EVEN ARABBS ARE NOW UNABLE TO PAY USD 100- SALARY TO SL HAOUSEMAIDS…THEY GO FOR ETHIOPIAN GIRLS JUST FOR USD50-SALARY….

  17. WHEN MAUGABE OF ZIMBABWE WAS UNABLE TO PAY FOR OIL IMPORT..HE APPROACHED GADAHFI OF LIBYA …WHO WITH A SMILE STARTED TO SUPPLY OIL…..WHEN GHDAFI REALISED THAT MUGABE WAS UNABLE TO PAY…HE SENT HIS BUDDIES TO COLLECT THE DEEDS OF ZIMBAWES PROPERTIES IN LONDON AND CHANGE THE DEEDS TO HIS NAME…..DONT WORRY SAME GADAFI WILL ASK FOR THE SL HIGH COMMISSION PROPERTY IN LONDON FOR HIS LOAN……AGAIN YOU CAN DANCE ….IN GALLE FACE

  19. Tony

One aspect of the post-election crackdown which has gone largely unremarked is how fundamentally stupid it is. Even if we give the Rajapaksa regime the benefit of the doubt with respect to some of the charges against Fonseka, and even if we overlook the Idi Aminian manner of his arrest, none of that explains the regime’s swift move to silence independent newspapers and web sites.

Why do I label this behaviour ‘stupid’? Because history tells us that governments which behave this way are sowing the seeds of their own destruction. At home, it breeds opposition. The worse the government oppression is, the more united the opposition; the more violent the oppression, the more violent the response. The international consequences are worse. Within a day of his re-election, which had been celebrated internationally as a victory for democracy, President Rajapaksa, at a stroke, made the country’s reputation stink. In one fell swoop, he confirmed the worst of the fears that his opponents had expressed. Apparently careless about having lost EC preferences because of the country’s human rights record, the President proceeded to make things worse. He is presumably safe in the knowledge that there is no shortage of rogue states ready and very willing to fill the vacuum, and that China is already embedded in the country through highway, bridge, port and airport projects.

One thing that has not changed since now-ancient civilizations ruled that land is its location at the southern tip of Asia, now as important and lucrative a location as it was when spices were currency. A proud post-independence tradition of non-alignment is now under threat. During the cold war, neither the U.S. nor the Soviets was allowed to have a base in Trincomalee, despite various blandishments being offered. Does that mean that the Chinese will not be allowed to have a naval base there? Even if they both build and bankroll a modern port there, as they are doing elsewhere on the island? Stay tuned.

This is a story made against a person badly. People know these stories very well. But in a different way. But this guy try to make people fools. That does not say MR is a good guy. If he is a clean person why he waits till Fonseka comes out. It is true now he needs to do the thingsw against Fonseka. But at the same time Fonseka also not correct. He is going to betray the whole country as a whole. But the marvalous thing thing is so called journalist (I have very good experience about them who I hate really but not all) try to fabricate new things and fool the people. Poor country and people.

  21. Wimal

Are you crazy ? If you do not know the actual truth, please keep your mouth shut.
MR & HIS BROTHERS are robbing the nation.

  22. Dilshan

    May be……..

Sarath Fonseka thought…….Jail is the safer place and get more popular.

Rauf Hakeem has do the same.

    • Janaka

Dilshan, when Genghis Khan conquired Bharatha and what is the aera of Han dinasty.

    • Peter Casie Chetty

Rauf Hakeem like Mumza does not wear the fez. If they did their tails would be all over. He is as good as the “I specialist” Ronnie De Mel who did a kangaroo hop from one side to the other pretending to please his Muslim constituents. He then sits to smoke the peace pipe with Prabakaran and still believe that he is a credible politician.
      Thambi ge thoppiya.

  23. Rick

This Dilshan guy is dumb, stupid, and crazy . This dummy needs immediate medical attention!

    • paul Smith

I think Dilshan has Catatonic Scizophrenia. We have to trace him and put him in Angoda. 3 doses of Electro Convulsive Therapy is urgently required.

  24. Sri Lankans please watch out. With out a shadow of doubt, in the next few years, SL will become another Zimbabwe. Its is half way there already. These people (Rajapakses) will grab absolute power for the next couple of generations or more. Sri Lankans just don’t have the guts to save their country like the Thais, Filipinos or Indonesians. They are just weak and unable to fight for themselves.
We need new, honest leaders, but I doubt whether we will ever produce them.

    • Janaka

You mean honest leader like SF??????

      • jfgjhfgh

SF was the scape goat , used to reach out to the SARONG JOHNNY’S of rural areas, because they all new what he did (getting ride of tigers) because it was on the rupawahini news that was the time he was good with mahinda ….
but RANIL yes hes the man to take sri lanka forward
we all colomboions know that withouhght help from west there is noway forward ,
its a pitty that Ranil cannot relate to SARONG JHONNY’S of rural areas , damn rajapakshas distroying are country
yes you did a good job mahinda eradicating tigers ,
but its time to move on now and make way for some one who can take sri lanka to the next level

        • jfgjhfgh

please all sinhalease people atleast this time
vote from your brain and not from your heart
and lets take sri lanka forward and bring back democracy, we need help from the west there is no doubt about that , shutting the west can spell dooms day , we can see whts happening to iran
what if saudi stops sri lankan house maides from work , what if saudi stops oil , what if there start GSP, what if there no more green card to U.S
what if there is no more student visas to uk or australia for are children ,
what if , what if , what if??????????????

  25. hamlet

Honest leaders do not produce histrionics like the present Politicians do. You have to be a good Actor with all the sound and light and backdrops, to impress the gullible Sri Lankan Voter!
