Fonseka Challenges Election Result in Court
Defeated Opposition Presidential Candidate General Sarath Fonseka has challenged the victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Supreme Court today.
Fonseka’s lawyers filed the petition in Supreme Court challenging the results of the January 26 presidential election seeking for its annulment.
Rajapaksa won the election with a majority of over 1.8 million votes against Fonseka, the former Army Commander.
The defeated candidate is currently under military custody for allegedly committing military offences. He is yet to be formally charged.

All this time, I ignored your writing about Tamils being the indigenous race in Sri Lanka, and spreading of such dim-witted ideas. But enough is enough. Now I wish to give few clues for interested readers to ponder.
Tamils are over seventy million all over the world. Talk to them, you feel that most of them are at a loss of something that Sinhalese have taken for granted. They have a dilemma. That is; they have no country of their own anywhere. That may be a problem for Tamils, but in my opinion that should not be a problem for Sinhala people.
Go to a Tamil web sites on history of India, you will see that the present day Tamil Nadu had been divided into three principal Tamil kingdoms, namely, Chera Nadu, Chola Nadu and Pandya Nadu. And, they were ruled by Chera, Chola and Pandya kings from the time of written Tamil history. It does not talk about their connection to Tamil kingdoms in Sri Lanka. Besides, there has been no historical evidence unearthed to prove that there had been a line of Tamil Kingdoms in Sri Lanka as had been in India.
Like you Dilshan, the Pusaries of Munneswaran kovol say; their Kovil has been there for over five thousand years. They say, Rawana is a Tamil. Surely, the Pusaries should have had some conicals like Mahawamsa if they had been there that long.
Leave out that five thousand years, if only Tamils had that Kovil for just one thousand years, the entire area of Munneswaran should be Tamil speaking by now. With the vast Tamil populace in neighbouring India and the so-called Tamil Kingdoms Tamils should have overwhelmed Sinhalese long long ago. But the entire area that surrounds the Kovol is Sinhalese. Why?
The answer is clear from many written chronicles such as Mahawamsa, Chulawamsa and etc: Only for brief spells, Tamil invaders had Kingdoms in Sri Lanka. And, when the invaders were beaten, either they had gone back to India or had been assimilated to the Sinhala society. And that is the truth Dilshan.
Leela, please don’t be so chauvanistic. There is enough evidence to suggest that South Indian fishermen would have utilised northern Sri Lanka as a base for many centuries before the arrival of prince Vijaya.
In any case, the Tamil people, who are also the citizens of Sri Lanka, have an equal right to live and prosper, no more or less than the Sinhala.
This is s game. This is a game formulated by those who want to divide this country. They finger point those who highlight the true history as chauvinists. They accuse those who show where Christian Evangelists are proselytizing Buddhists by bribe as bigots.
Neither me nor vast majority of Sinhala Buddhists in this country are chauvinists or bigots. I have shown which holy books that make people chauvinists and bigots. In my earlier comments I gave the numbers of specific verses that urge its adherents to be chauvinists and bigots..
We not only oppose such racist bigoted stands but stand for equal rights for everyone.
It must be said, however it doesn’t mean they can be allowed to destroy our 2500 year old religion, history and culture. As had been done throughout our history our religion and culture must be nurtured by the government.

A 5,000 year old kovil (Munneswaran) would be great boon for tourism in Sri Lanka. In history’s timeline, this parallels the great pyramids in Egypt.
I suggest that the Sri Lankan Government and the people in the area of the Kovil, start a tourist promotion campagin.

My dear ayesh; True Tamils had been fisher folks. But there had been no fisher-folk kingdoms in Sri Lanka. To cover-up this inadequacy, Many Tamils talk about a lot of myth and legend. They say; Tamils had being a sea faring race throughout history. Whether a sea faring race or not, it is true that Tamils have been living in few countries in Asia. We all know, how Tamils got to Malaysia and central hills of Sri Lanka. Also, Tamils are known to have reached Andaman and few other Islands as fisher folks. If they were sea faring race they should have reached Maldives. We could assume Tamils have not been there, because Maldivians are not of Tamil lineage. And the vernacular language of Maldives has a clear linkage to Sinhalese not Tamil. Therefore this sea faring claim of Tamils has its failing.
Leela – The mahavamsa is not history – it is HIS story written by those that want to preserve their claim to a country that is not rightfully theirs.. a legacy of the continued Aryan Indian empirical clamp on the deep-rooted culture of Sri lankan Tamil history…

But, I can tell you this much; the Sinhala alphabet consists of 61 symbols: 18 vowel symbols, 41 consonant symbols and 2 semi-consonant symbols; whereas the Tamil alphabet consists of 48 symbols: 14 vowel sounds and 26 consonant sounds. Ask any of you Tamil language scholars.
Sinhala is a member of the Indo-Aryan family of languages; whereas Tamil is genetically unrelated to the North Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, and Gujarati. The modern script used in writing Sinhala is unique to it.
‘ba’ and ‘ga’ letters are there in Sinhala alphabet but ‘not’ in Tamil alphabet. That is why ordinary Tamils cannot pronounce ‘baa’ or ‘gaa’ sounds. Tamils pronounce them as ‘waa’ and ‘kaa’. Now don’t get me wrong. This does not mean to say that Tamil is an inferior language. On the contrary it has its own sophistications. I am only trying to show Sinhala is not based on Tamil language. Like wrote here one Ratnam wrote before a misconception about Sinhala language. What Dilshan write is nothing but canard.

Tamil Writings are from Tamil; Singheela(Buddhist) writings are from Paali(Sanskrit+Mongolian Mix). While Buddhism was all over Bharatham(India,Nepal,Eelam etc etc) Paali writings were used and Telungu,Kerala,Singheela and even Thailand writings are Paali based writings. Some are borrowed from Tamil and vice versa.
Even, nowadays we borrow from English(Latin).
What we need to look at it, are the Face and Features and the Dialect we speak.
Tamils origin and the Singheela Origin. Time and the Language developments. Most of the Buddhist Epics were written in Kerala(Cheralam) by the Monk Elango(prince became a monk) They spoke Tamil but they chose to use Paali writings as Singheelam and end up with different writings.
I compared the way Tamil and Kerala are splitted because of the writing alphabets they chosed. The same way, in Eelam, we are splitted by the alphabets(caused by the Mongolian Monks) and now we even think we are two different races.(and you know what we have been doing since 1956). That is the curse.

It is common for the loosing party in Lanka to cry foul. Peripharal election rigging is somewhat the norm in Lanka which may or may not have altered the election results in the past.
The Presidential election rigging is in a different level. Look at the following details to decide for yourself.
1. Before the election one of the prominent ministers said that the ‘Government departments, the power and the army all are theirs and hence we WILL NOT loose the election’ !
3. Army divisions brought close to Colombo. Why ???
3. Election Commissioner was held captive at the temple trees. Why ???
4. Election commissioners wife and daughter held captive at Water Edge Complex in Kotte. Why ???
5. Computerisation of results done at ICT venue which is headed by Presidents secretary Mr Lalith Weeratunga. Previously this was at the University of Colombo. Independent and impartial????
6. Entire Rupavahini staff sent on leave except for a few. Why???
7. Results released from mobile TV station from Temple trees .. Why???
8. Basil Rajapaksa ( reputation tarnished by massive corruption allegations) has been at the Election centre… denied by the govt. but seen and reported by Times correspondent …. Nothing sinister?????
9.District voter turn out in Colombo district reported as 65% at the end of polls… but final result was for 78% meaning almost 200,000 added votes for Mahinda Rajapaksa
Similarly in Hambantota voter turn out 71% but final result for 80.7 %. hence added number 42,000 votes.
10. Ballot paper bundle found contained 67 papers marked for Gen. Fonseka instead of 50. ( normally bundles of 50 ). This is the only one found…. who to say about all other such bundles? By law these have to be preserved for 6 months… Why try to destroy them if it was a clean election where victor had a thumping majority?
11. Opposition hotel totally surrounded by special forces… meaning that there was no escape if they were victorius though it was impossible under the circumstances.
12. Election commissioner still refusing to hand over carbon copies of counting centres. If it was truly a thumping majority why can’t he clear all doubts by giving simple proof ?
Each of above in isolation could be dismissed but the whole picture proves beyond doubt that the BIGGEST ROBBERY IN LANKAN HISTORY HAS TAKEN PLACE…….

Election technically won on paper, but to put the final nail in the coffin was one of the reasons to arrest the General to prevent the election petition but under the pretex of many other allegations!!!!!

If you see how the Election Victory was celebrated throughout the Country and how many people hoisted the National Flag or flew the National flag on their vehicles on Independence day and the period thereafter, our first truly Independent day in 30 years, in comparison to the huge majority with which MR won, you can gauge for yourself as to who won the Election.

EC must await a direction from Supreme Court to do something different now.
The claim that the opposition reps were not present at some counting centres – and counting continued should be investigated by the court.
There are two sides to this story: one is that they were chased away (refuted by the EC) and the other, the opposition reps left the counting centres when they realised that their candidate was loosing.
The latter is a carbon copy of what conservatives did in Ukraine polls in 2004; they left the centres where their candidate was loosing. (And this gimmick proved successful in a challenge to election results in the courts).
But Opp says they did not get CC’s in many places !!
And we all know from reports that some(many ?) opps members in the counting offices were kicked-out!
Also we know burnded ballot papers were found out sides !

I thought there had been five carbon copies that you are talking about and they were handed over first, second and third in the winning list. So, Fonseka’s agents should have one copy from each and every counting center.

Elections commissioner has safeguarded the carbon copies for Sanitary pads for the family as, if and when there is a foreign currency shortage. Truth can’t prevail, How can a Judge make a comment if he has a gun pointed at the back of his wife or a family member.
EC said that he was worried sick about this sort of misinformation (pointed guns, rigging the count at the EC’s office etc.,) propagated through an sms campaign on the election night. He has unreservedly said these were lies.
Now, the more important question is: why such lies were spread on the election night.??
Clear thinking Sri Lankan do not discount the possibility that the looser was preparing to take over power forcibly on the premise of safeguarding EC and election results etc.

Before entering data to the computers, election officers issue the copies of results sheets to each party rep, and they have to sign it for the accuracy. I’m talking about those sheets. If some one think that there is a problem with computer data handling, they can compare the published results with the numbers in the result sheets they were given. For this you don’t need CC (what ever it means) or any other thing except a simple knowledge in math.
CC is Carbon Copy, since u dont know the term I dont expect u to know a lot abt PCs.
We have a case here some opps members in the counting centres DID not get that copy. Because some left & some were kicked out !
So how can they compare something that they did not get ?
Why re-issuing CCs is hard ? EC MUST have a copy do Simple photocopy would do that.

You cannot buy a house in Wellawatte even with the smaller amount, and you cannot buy a house in Col-7 even with the larger amount. SF declared his assets prior to the election and everything was in order with what was expected for someone in the Army for 40 yrs.
His son-in-law works abroad/ is a businessman abroad and may have earned his income in a perfectly honest manner. They may in fact have even sold a local property and simply converted the Rs to $ to hedge against inflation. Many people I know do that. Regardless this amount is a pittance compared to the frauds the Horapakshe regime is involved in.

Hangers on, bootlickers, sychophants and henchmen may be blinded by a few million rupee bribes & there.. a few opportunities for them to steal here and there.. but it is nothing more than teaspoon of honey compared to the oil drums being stolen every single day.
After all the opposition claims of theft of the nations wealth and the prime land purchases, fantastic amounts of money are being repatriated out of the Country, mostly through the banking system (with bootlicker Cabraal’s caonnivance).
Some weeks, even blackmarket dollars are drying up because of Horapakshe making mule trips abroad. For instance Gota was in Singapore the night SF was arrested. The core family of about 15 are stealing the remain 20 million people’s wealth. A remaining Horapaske family group of about 300 are also indirectly making tons of money.

I don’t like the way Rajapaksas treated Fonseka once the war finished. Such an ungratitude attitude listening to Evil-India and insulting our war-Hero, is a big no no.
You said I Love LTTE, I am from Tamileelam; It doesn’t mean I love LTTE or any other Terrorist Groups. They Killed more of themselves than Singheela Forces as Enemies.
The latest news is that the UNP will contest under Elephant symbol and green colour – and the UNF alliance will be restored. The JVP and few others will contest under a “Cup” (an inverted Bell symbol some say) with SF as their leader.
We should wait to hear from the General himself. He may fall into JVP trap as it suits his egoistic nature (he is the leader what may come) and get assigned to the dustbin of history after the parliamentary elections.
On the otherhand, the General may get a sense of electoral proportions whilst in detention (this period may help him to purify his mind with some meditation – and subdue his pride, jealousy, anger and sense of loss).
The General may wisely opt to contest under the elephant symbol. He surely would be offered deputy leadership and an opportunity to learn the game of politics (quite different to war games). Potentially, with cleaver party politics, he would lead the UNF to next presidential elections!!
SF’s political futue is his alone!! The history will show that UNP, and Ranil in particular, has played cards well under politically difficult circumstances.
Lets look forward to a contest between UNF and UFPA with some real policy debates. Sri Lankans are all too familiar with mud slinging between parties at elections, and they know this is a sure sign that there is no real policy difference. Sri Lankans are electorily wise enough to ignore cries of corruption, for example, a virus that afflicts whoever in power.
Without policy differences, the history has shown that, the Sri Lankans re-elect the incumbant.
The UNP, having shaken off a marraige of convenience with JVP (a policy nightmare), is well placed to argue how it would mend the economy, for instance.
