“Mahanayakes Threatened With Temple Bomb Attack” — Prelate

The proposed Sangha Convention that was scheduled for last Thursday had to be postponed by the Mahanayakes after a group of pro-government Buddhist monks threatened to bomb the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, the most venerated Buddhist shrine in the country.
Executive Committee Member of the Sangha Convention, the Chief Incumbent, Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya, Ven. Walawahengunuwewe Dhammarathana Thero alleged that a group of 45 Buddhist monks had visited the Malwathu Viharaya on February 16 and urged the Malwatte Mahanayaka Thera to cancel the convention that was to be held on February 18.
The Mahanayakes called the Convention to discuss the establishment of democracy and good governance. The pro-government group warned that failing to cancel it would mean the Mahanayake Thera would have to take the responsibility if two or three bombs went off within the premises of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
“Chancellor of Kelaniya University, Ven. Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thero, former Parliamentarian Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero, Ven. Diviyagaha Yasassi Thero and Ven. Rekhawa Jinarathana Thero were among the 45 monks who wanted the Mahanayake to cancel the Sangha Convention,” Dhammarathana Thero told The Sunday Leader.
The group of monks initially threatened the Mahanayake by saying that they would leave the sect if the convention was not cancelled.
“The Mahanayake said that it was nothing new, and that in the past monks have left the sect,” Dhammarathana Thera claimed.
“Realising that such threats will not get the Mahanayake to cancel the convention, this group telephoned the President, who personally spoke to the Mahanayake, urging him to cancel the convention, but the Mahanayake had been adamant about holding the convention,” Dhammarathana Thero said.
“The group had then asked whether the Mahanayake would like to see two or three bombs go off at the ‘Mahamaluwa’ and whether he would take the responsibility if the Temple of the Tooth is damaged,” Dhammarathana Thero claimed.
He said that such threats led to the postponing of the convention.
Dhammarathana Thero further said he has been summoned to appear today (February 21) at 9 a.m. to the Anuradhapura Police Crimes Division to explain his presence at a protest that turned unruly following the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka. The protest was held in the main town precincts of Anuradhapura and Ven Dhammarathana Thero has been accused of stoning the offices of the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero, when contacted by The Sunday Leader, said the group never used the word “bomb” or threatened the Mahanayakes with a possible attack. “We only warned the Malwatte Mahanayake Thero not to fall prey to politicians’ traps. And he understood this and postponed the Convention.”
Meanwhile, the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter Most Ven. Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, while not explicitly stating that such an incident occurred, did tell The Sunday Leader that the Mahanayakes were compelled to postpone the event to ensure the safety of the Maha Sangha and the Temple of the Tooth.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told the media on Friday that a few years back it was the LTTE that bombed the Dalada Maligawa but today groups backed by the government were threatening to carry out a similar act. Wickremesinghe charged that they threatened to get 500 temples under the Malwatte Sector removed and re-allocated to the Ruhunu Sector. However, Wickremesinghe pointed out that Article 9 of the Constitution gives the foremost position to Buddhism that is line with the Kandyan Convention, which is specially applied to the Malwatte and Asgiri Sectors. “Heretics are now threatening to divide the Malwatte Chapter,” he said, adding “We condemn the attempt to divide the Malwatte Chapter – the government is working to destroy the Buddha Sasana.”
‘Maha Sangha” now is the time to act upon the noble teaching of the Buddha in taught, word and deed. The Lord Buddha also had powerful enemies than the ones today. If laymen can see why you “Maha Sangha” can’t foresee the dangerous trend and bring about a reconciliation so that the people can enjoy the true meaning of peace and progress to our land. We are sick and tired of this hatred,revengeful dum argumentsexpression and lunatic ideology. Some ministers on media are like scavengers ready to suck blood of whoever they get hold of, are these real Buddhist or on payroll of external forces to bury Buddhism for good? It’s a disgrace to all Buddhist to give into bomb threats we know about the ltte breakaway faction who are experienced capable of such acts and who are protecting them and for what cause. War ends rape begins :a schoolgirl the victim –body of a villager who went to the camp to protest found in a pond.
A nine year old girl studying in grade five of a Govt. School at Sithandiya , Digili, Batticaloa was raped by three Army officers from the Digiliwedai Army camp. The girl is now hospitalized at Batticaloa Govt, Hospital.
When the victim was going with two of her friends after school, this incident has occurred.
When the incident was reported to the parents, they have made a complaint to the Venkaladi Police. The victim who was admitted to Mawadewembu Hospital was later transferred to Batticaloa Base Hospital.
The relatives of the victim said after she was admitted to Hospital , her frock with the blood stains were taken into custody by the CID .
When the victim with her friends were going home , the three soldiers who were bathing at a well had given chase to them and committed the rape. It is learnt that the Batticaloa medical Officer (Coroner) has given a report that the girl had been raped. This report has only been released after the intervention of the Batticaloa children and women’s District office.
When the residents of the area had gone to the Digilivedai camp and staged protests , there had arisen a tense situation. Army officers on motor bikes who were sent to control the situation have gone to the homes of the residents and threatened them.
The body of Chandrasekeran Sugabalan (31) who went to the camp to protest against the incident was found in a pond at Digilivedai the following day.
Army spokesman Major general Prasad Samarasinghe in this connection stated that a mother and a 8year old girl from a small village in Kiran had come to the Police and complained on the 14th that her daughter 11 years old was molested , consequent upon which she is admitted to Hospital. The Police had reported this complaint to the relevant Army camp and , currently investigations are under way .48 Army suspects have been summoned to the Court for the trial on the 25th when an identification parade will be held , he further added.

I respect Our Ven Mahanayakas of Malwatte and Asgiriya. They are our chief monks and custodians of our sacred ‘Tooth Relic’. i must emphasize however that none is a ‘sangaraja’ as the one in Thailand. In my humble opinion our Mahanayakas should have listened to both sides before arriving at a conclusion favoring one side. Have they done so this unfortunate misunderstanding may not have taken place.
Monks that had gone to see Mahanayakas were not gangsters. If not all very many of them were highly intelligent, educated and respected human beings. There might have been some kind of persuasion but it couldn’t have been a harangue.

Politically oriented Buddhist monks are a self important, loud mouthed bunch who generally mess about during election times. They are divided on party political lines. They are generally unprincipled – you will find self contradictory comments from anyone of them over a couple of election cycles.
With the advent of information age (internet etc.,) soon the Sri Lankan political leaders will have the benefit of meaningful opinion polls. Then they will be able to judge a half empty vessel despite its noise.

As Sri Lanka is a multi religious multi ethnic country. There should be a law against all religious bodies in active politics. If any religious monk/priest/ wants to get into politics or supporot any party and get on stage, they should leave their respective religion and join dirty politics. Otherwise do what they are meant to do – preach and practice what you preach.

Junaid; you say; monks/priests should be compelled to leave their robes if they want to do politics. Sounds a reasonable proposition, though not practical. I say so because in the end everything ends up as politics. I think all religious leaders are forced in to politics no matter what religion they are in. After all subscribers of both politicians and religious leaders are people.
Somewhere earlier here, a man named Moulana said; Muslim clerics do not dabble in politics. I wrote; I wouldn’t buy it. If only Muslim clerics can muster enough power they would demand ’sharia law’ in Sri Lanka. In 2003, I read an article by a Muslim scholar who urged the government to implement sharia law for Muslims here. They may be quite now because the situation is not conductive for such demands. Anyway, is that not politics.
