The proposed Sangha Convention that was scheduled for last Thursday had to be postponed by the Mahanayakes after a group of pro-government Buddhist monks threatened to bomb the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, the most venerated Buddhist shrine in the country.
Executive Committee Member of the Sangha Convention, the Chief Incumbent, Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya, Ven. Walawahengunuwewe Dhammarathana Thero alleged that a group of 45 Buddhist monks had visited the Malwathu Viharaya on February 16 and urged the Malwatte Mahanayaka Thera to cancel the convention that was to be held on February 18.
The Mahanayakes called the Convention to discuss the establishment of democracy and good governance. The pro-government group warned that failing to cancel it would mean the Mahanayake Thera would have to take the responsibility if two or three bombs went off within the premises of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
“Chancellor of Kelaniya University, Ven. Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thero, former Parliamentarian Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero, Ven. Diviyagaha Yasassi Thero and Ven. Rekhawa Jinarathana Thero were among the 45 monks who wanted the Mahanayake to cancel the Sangha Convention,” Dhammarathana Thero told The Sunday Leader.
The group of monks initially threatened the Mahanayake by saying that they would leave the sect if the convention was not cancelled.
“The Mahanayake said that it was nothing new, and that in the past monks have left the sect,” Dhammarathana Thera claimed.
“Realising that such threats will not get the Mahanayake to cancel the convention, this group telephoned the President, who personally spoke to the Mahanayake, urging him to cancel the convention, but the Mahanayake had been adamant about holding the convention,” Dhammarathana Thero said.
“The group had then asked whether the Mahanayake would like to see two or three bombs go off at the ‘Mahamaluwa’ and whether he would take the responsibility if the Temple of the Tooth is damaged,” Dhammarathana Thero claimed.
He said that such threats led to the postponing of the convention.
Dhammarathana Thero further said he has been summoned to appear today (February 21) at 9 a.m. to the Anuradhapura Police Crimes Division to explain his presence at a protest that turned unruly following the arrest of General Sarath Fonseka. The protest was held in the main town precincts of Anuradhapura and Ven Dhammarathana Thero has been accused of stoning the offices of the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero, when contacted by The Sunday Leader, said the group never used the word “bomb” or threatened the Mahanayakes with a possible attack. “We only warned the Malwatte Mahanayake Thero not to fall prey to politicians’ traps. And he understood this and postponed the Convention.”
Meanwhile, the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter Most Ven. Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, while not explicitly stating that such an incident occurred, did tell The Sunday Leader that the Mahanayakes were compelled to postpone the event to ensure the safety of the Maha Sangha and the Temple of the Tooth.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told the media on Friday that a few years back it was the LTTE that bombed the Dalada Maligawa but today groups backed by the government were threatening to carry out a similar act. Wickremesinghe charged that they threatened to get 500 temples under the Malwatte Sector removed and re-allocated to the Ruhunu Sector. However, Wickremesinghe pointed out that Article 9 of the Constitution gives the foremost position to Buddhism that is line with the Kandyan Convention, which is specially applied to the Malwatte and Asgiri Sectors. “Heretics are now threatening to divide the Malwatte Chapter,” he said, adding “We condemn the attempt to divide the Malwatte Chapter – the government is working to destroy the Buddha Sasana.”

This news item bought me to tears. To have the most venerated Dalada Maligawa threatened by men in saffron robes acting on behalf of the Rajapakses, for political gain, is despicable, disgusting and beyond the pale.
These politican monks… Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thero, Uduwe Dhammaloka Thero, Ven. Diviyagaha Yasassi Thero and Rekhawa Jinarathana Thero should be publicly declared for heresy and as enemies to all Threvada Buddism and all Buddhists..

Personally I don’t see anything wrong in this as the monks need to be healthy and fit to perform their responsibilities towards the community. It all comes down to the intention. What is the basis for Mahanayakas to summon a convention just two weeks later to teach good governance to the President when an overwhelming number of Sinhala Buddhists have endorsed Rajapaksa’s governance.
It is the Mahanayakas who have to explain their conduct.
Don’t you find it unusual that various UNPers who were obviously not present when the pro-government delegation of priests met the Mahanayakes are issuing statements about breakaways and bombings.

I am a Buddhist. As such, I am not inclined to criticize our ven Mahanayaka’s actions. Sure, they have the right to criticize the government on any subject they think fit.
For one thing though I must say; we do not have a Sangaraja or Mahanayaka of Mahanayakas. For another, I ought to say that it is the monks from the coast line that fought for the revival of Buddhism in the late nineteenth century and not the ones from Kandy. Hikkaduwe Sumangala, Mohottiwatte Gunananda is only two of them to name a few.
I suppose our Mahanayakes should have dug deep in to the subject matter without taking cue from one sided presenters like Upasaka Karu. Ven Mahanayakas should have consulted or read write-ups by people like Professor Nalin de Silva and similar patriots in Lankaweb

Since our Mahanayakas are thick in to politics let me recite a little bit of recent past acts. Immediately after the war, Fonseka said he had wiped out not just LTTE but all its leaders as well. Fonseka went so far as to claim that he had not even left-out the terrorist’ bowels in Nandikadal. No wonder, for those of us nationalists that supported the war, ‘Yesterday’ Fonseka had become a war hero. And, for those that opposed the war, that is; International Community, NGOs and Christian Evangelists, Fonseka was an enemy and a murderer of Tamils.
All this started to change just few months after the war ended. Once Fonseka went to US and came back those that opposed the war and the international media claimed Fonseka is the ‘war hero’. Soon we the nationalists learned Fonseka has changed sides and agreed with the US and their allies to give evidence against our battle front commanders and the defence secretary on heresy claims on ‘war crimes’.
Once people verdict was given at the Presidential election, Fonseka should have accepted it; but he doesn’t. Mahanayakas ought to understand that the government cannot let Fonseka free to go around the world and testify against our true heroes and send them to gallows. Can we?
Too bad, Fonseka is at the end of his ego trip. We get a hunch that those opposing rallies have started to die down as well.
Blame the President for politicizing the military, monks, state institutions, film industry, sports, etc., etc. You name it, he has politicized them all. This Maharaja is pretty insecure. He will try to take people within his orbit by politicizing them or he will destroy them. Very soon Maharaja will do our thinking too. We won’t need any brains for survival.

This disgraceful incident should not be used for religious one-up-manship. It is cause to mourn because its only an extension of terrible malaise facing Sri Lanka today. Decades of war and rule by incompetent but crafty selfish politicians have dragged the country to ugly depths and its continuing to sink. How lower can it get? The blame for all of this goes to our political leaders – both govt and opposition, present and past. They can hide now, but there will come a time when they have to account for their actions. The monks involved should know that too.
In Sri Lanka when one conversion takes place we attack and burn Christian churches but when our main religion is threatened we act like cowards and stay silent.
