‘The Fraud Of The Risen Lord’

By Michael Hardy

In an audience of 3,000 there are likely to be several gambling addicts, quite a few people with cancer, and innumerable women with sores on their feet

Thousands of people are packed together, arms outstretched, eyes closed. Sweat pours down their bodies as they sway back and forth to the rhythm of the music. Suddenly, at a command from their leader, they open their mouths and begin talking, but not in English, Sinhala or Tamil. You strain to understand their words, but then you realise there’s nothing to understand. “Alahaulaiwailahalgawala,” they chant. “Yamagulanaidaileameailana.”

Is this a political rally? A cricket match? No, it’s the Wednesday-evening service at St. Peter’s College in Bambalapitiya. For years, the Community of the Risen Lord, a supposedly Catholic organisation headed by the notorious charlatan Brother Lalith Perera, has held its charismatic revival meetings at St. Peter’s, attracting larger and larger audiences with its faith healing and with its claim to facilitate speaking in tongues.

The Wednesday evening service at St. Peter’s College

The Community now estimates its weekly audience at around 3,000 people, far more than can fit into the St. Peter’s auditorium. To accommodate the overflow crowd, the Community sets up hundreds of chairs under a giant tent outside the auditorium, where people can follow the service through a live video feed.

Although the Community is nominally Catholic, people like me who grew up in the Catholic Church will recognise very little of Catholicism in these Wednesday-evening services. Because Brother Perera is not a priest, he isn’t allowed to say mass. There is no Lord’s Prayer and no communion. Actually, the service bears a stronger resemblance to charismatic evangelical sects like the Baptists or Pentecostals, who also speak in tongues and believe in faith healing, than to mainstream Catholicism.

Last week, the service began at six o’clock in the evening. Around 20 well-dressed men and women of different ages stood on stage, leading the worship songs. Every few minutes one of the people would step forward, recite a short Bible verse, give their own interpretation of it, and then step back as another song would begin. After about half an hour of this, the singing stopped and a woman walked to the microphone. She proceeded to read what she claimed were letters from people who were miraculously “cured” through their faith in God. One woman claimed that she had survived a deadly snake bite by touching a crucifix to her toe. Another wrote that her cancerous tumor had disappeared after praying to Jesus. The 3,000 people in the audience didn’t seem to find anything unlikely about these stories.

Finally, Brother Perera himself stepped to the microphone. He is a fifty-something man with white hair, spectacles, and an avuncular smile. I expected him to begin with a prayer, but instead he made a plea to his audience. “If anyone has a projector to donate to us, we would very much appreciate it,” he said. “Our current projectors are old or dying.” Later, Perera would give a long sales pitch for the Community’s annual trip to Israel and Italy, making sure to mention that tickets were still available (hint, hint.) To sweeten the deal, Perera revealed that in Italy the tour group would see the Shroud of Turin, which is rarely exhibited. “In fact,” Perera told his credulous audience, “recent research suggests the Shroud could really show the impression of Christ’s face.” Actually, as Perera probably knows — he claims “science is my hobby” — the recent research shows that the Shroud was a hoax manufactured a thousand years after Jesus died. Like all swindlers, Perera never lets an inconvenient truth get between him and his money.

After soliciting all the predictable donations, Perera started in on the “spiritual” part of his talk. He began by flattering his thousands of followers, telling them that they were leaders in the worldwide movement to bring unbelievers to Jesus. Throughout history, he said, extraordinary people like Jesus, Buddha, and Lao-Tzu bore witness to God’s power. For 2000 years there were Christian saints and martyrs who devoted their lives to God. “But only in the 21st century,” Perera said, “are ordinary people like you getting involved in this great cause.” As if comparing his followers to Jesus, Buddha, and Lao-Tzu wasn’t enough, Perera went on to say that with the help of the Community of the Risen Lord the 21st century would see an end to war. Given the past 30 years of Sri Lankan history, this sounded pretty good, if somewhat unlikely.

Perera punctuated his grandiose pronouncements by enjoining his audience to “Praise the Lord!” If this failed to generate sufficient enthusiasm, he would follow the injunction up by asking everyone to “give a hand to the Lord.” The audience would then start clapping as if at a football match. Apparently God needs a lot of applause, because Perera must have asked for 15 or 20 such ovations over the course of his speech. Sometimes, when he really got carried away, Perera would start speaking in tongues after asking everyone to praise the Lord. Although the crowd loved this, Perera didn’t let it go on for long. Like a true showman, he knew how to save the best for last.

Altogether, Perera talked for about an hour and a half, he said remarkably little of substance. Much of the time was taken up by singing along to lyrics projected on the screen, karaoke style. When Perera did get around to discussing actual verses from the Bible, the verses were typically extremely short, taken completely out of context, and twisted to fit whatever message Perera was clumsily trying to convey. Once, when Perera asked for a particular verse to be projected on the screen behind him, he got the verse number wrong, and it took him three tries to guess the correct number. For every minute Perera spent on the Bible, he spent 10 minutes talking about his own ideas, which gives you a good sense of the relative value he sets on himself and God.

Given the exploding popularity of the Community of the Risen Lord, it would seem that God needs Brother Perera more than Brother Perera needs God. As Perera proudly pointed out during the service, and as the Community’s website proclaims, God has favoured the Community with “an unprecedented outpouring of grace.” Perera frequently travels out of the country, spreading the Community’s message to Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and beyond. The Wednesday-evening service is broadcast on the Community’s website.

Even Catholic priests apparently come by the hundreds to the Community’s retreats to be instructed by Brother Perera, who has clearly become the de facto bishop of Sri Lanka. The Community claims to be “renewing” the Catholic Church, but who, exactly, asked them to renew it? The Pope? It would appear that God Himself has specially picked out Brother Perera to single-handedly regenerate the whole structure of Catholicism.

Probably the biggest reason for the Community’s popularity is its claim to perform “faith healing.” According to its website, “the sick have been healed, addictions broken, weaknesses overcome and broken marriages reconciled.” The way this works is that, at the end of every Wednesday-evening service, Perera and another woman take turns speaking “words of knowledge,” which they claim to receive directly from God. These words of knowledge are exactly the same as the pronouncements of an astrologer.

During the service I attended, the words of knowledge included predictions that a gambling addict would be cured, a woman with sores on her feet would be healed, a woman with cancer would recover, and so on. Because these predictions aren’t directed at any single person, there’s no way they can be disproved. Like an astrologer who tells you that something good will happen to you in the next month, the “words of knowledge” are so general that they become meaningless.

Of course, in an audience of 3,000 there are likely to be several gambling addicts, quite a few people with cancer, and innumerable women with sores on their feet. If one of his vague predictions appears to come true for even one of these suffering people, Brother Perera can claim to have healed their sickness. Does this mean that God really worked a miracle? Of course not. It just means that Perera and his cronies have figured out the law of large numbers. Like all astrologers and fortune-tellers, Perera is naturally hesitant about providing any concrete proof of his powers. The Community’s website provides only one example of a faith healing — a taxi driver in Maharagama whose heart problems were supposedly cured by attending a prayer meeting. Surely, if the Community has really healed as many people as it claims, it can provide more than just one testimony out of decades of work!

The world will always be full of quacks, charlatans, frauds, mountebanks, and hucksters. The only surprise is that supposedly educated people continue to fall for their cheap tricks and cynical money-grabbing. The 3,000 people who attend Brother Perera’s magic show each week, and the hundreds who donate their hard-earned money so that Perera can fly around the world like a captain of industry, are being bamboozled on a massive scale. To rob gullible people of their money is a crime. To rob them in the name of Jesus is particularly despicable.

The Catholic Church of Sri Lanka, if it doesn’t want to become the laughing-stock of the island, must immediately put a stop to this renegade preacher and take steps to ensure that nobody else can use the name of Catholicism to hoodwink and defraud ordinary people. Brother Perera is not the messenger of God on Earth, as he likes to present himself; he cannot heal the sick or speak in tongues. He’s just an ordinary man with an extraordinary talent for deceiving people. And there’s nothing holy about that.

    Matthew 5:11-12
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

atleast he has won one person to the lord(as you have told) how many have you won….. stop judging,, or else you will be judgeged severly. come to the lord he still loves you. he can use you more than bro lalith if it is his will. god bless you bro.

The truth about human beings is that if one prefers to look at something from only one angle, they can do so. Give the most beautiful object in the world to a pessimist or a cynic, you’re bound to hear them find fault in that as well. It is just the attitude in which we look at things. I used to be one of these people. and it is very sad that this article is one of those instances.

i have no idea why the author is reacting to this in such a violently biased manner. Maybe he has a personal grievance with the community. I dont know. And it really does not matter. However i really do wish that the author had looked at this through another angle as well as his own before writing this story.Maybe talk to some who have benefited from the meeting. It hurt me personally that such a hostile angle was taken against a place that helped me build up my life.

Yes, i was a regular attendee of the wednesday prayer meetings. I did wonder, at first just like the author, what people were doing swaying and chanting and singing. However I kept attending meetings because i liked the advice lalith perera had to better your everyday life. it made sense to me. And i became a true believer. Not of Lalith Perera, but of god. Coming from a 100% buddhist family which has ‘pirith’ playing every morning in the house, that is quite a change.

And although I dont attend the meetings now due to my work schedule, I do still believe in god. and i practice God’s teachings. Not Lalith Perera’s. The author is very correct in saying he is a normal human being. He has no powers. And as far as i see, Lalith Perera just convey’s the message of god in a simple language for us to understand.

And from what i have seen from the wednesday meeting, Lalith Perera has never claimed that he can cure illnesses. He prays for the sick, yes. However, it is my understanding that it is god’s will whether a particular person is healed or not.

Looking at the world nowadays, isn’t it always good to have another place you can come and worship the lord in a time that no one has time for him? Whether the people follow lalith perera or the lord is upto them. But please dont take away the place they can all come together. This world has a surplus of anger and hate. Dont take away places where people let go of all that and just come together to find peace. This is coming from a person who used to thrive on hate and malice. god has shown me a different light. And i have the wednesday meetings to thank for introducing me to him.

As a final note dear author, i must mention, that i appreciate the way you are trying to guide your audience away from shams and false beliefs. God has blessed you with an amazing ability to write. And may god continue to bless you.

    May you find peace.

Thank the Lord for the courage he gives you to speak the truth, in a society like today, when no one wants to acknowledge the living God, you have the ability to do so.
Praise the Lord. May the Wednesday Bro. Lalith’s service be of immense healing place for many lost souls.
      God bless you

Catholic hierarchy in Sri Lankais fully threatened by Brother Laliths spiritual work. I live in USA and I see That the Catholic church is desperately trying to retain their congregation. I still go for Sunday Mass only because to receive the Holy Eucharist not for their boring preaching. Its always a case of desperately trying to raise money.. Sri Lankan Bishops seem to be threatened by this movement. They seem to getting people like Hardy to write letters of this nature.
Shame on them.I have been a good food friend of a Catholic priest. I have heard and learned enough of them.Lot of people don’t know this.

  5. Shiranthi

Bro.Lalith Perera is certainly a Man of God. He (With the power of my God) changed my life & lives of my whole family. You should go more often to know who God is NOT who Bro Lalith is, then HE (God) will speak to you to use your talents to do HIS work not to waste your time on others negatively.
    May God bless you.

  6. kumar

Dear Mr. Hardy, be careful, for the Lord Jesus said that all sins you commit will be forgiven but not speaking against the Holy Spirit; these people are praying in the Spirit and you have to have the gift of interpretation to kn0ow what they are saying. This is Scriptural. When the Holy Spirit first fell on the Day of Pentecost, they spoke in ‘tongues’. Also, all Christians have a Great Commission. That Commission is to share the Good News of Salvation thoughout the land. That is also in the Scriptures.

Do not speak loosely; look at what is happening around us. Floods, earthquales, fires, strange new deseases, economic chaos, storms etc etc. These are Prophecy coming to pass. So be careful what you say, even if you wish not to believe. Read the Scriptures and you will be wiser.

  7. Ray

Michael, are you a journalist reporting for the Leader or do you basically right another editorial.
A journalist obviously reports the news and then allows the readers to make up their mind. However more and more articles on leader has become editorial peices blatantly exposing the personal views of the journalist righting the article.

Look I certainly appreciate the work that the Leader has been doing in the past. but now I am just getting a little concerned because it is not really a a Sunday Newspaper but consist of articles full of opinions. As you know in journalistic language when you accuse someone or something words such as alleged should be used.

For instance when you speak of the Shroud of Turin, there is still two opinions on it, some claim it is a Fake and the others are not sure. However niether party can confirm it for 100%. Therefore you should use the word ‘Allegedly’ a fake.

Also Michael The Leader is a paper that Honourable Late Mr Lasantha Wikramatunga build to be a paper to be looked at with honour and pride. It was a paper that always exposed a lot of things but at the same time did so with respect to the Journalistic crede and credentials. The Leader was never allowed to be used by Mr Wikrematunga for journalists to carryout their personal agendas.

When one reads your articles on this issue it appears that you have a personal axe to grind against the Bro Lalith’s group. It really is not relavant to your reader.

Also Michael I am not a Bro lalith suporter as such but my concern is that you have used the Sunday Leader to launch a personal attack on an indicidual. An attack which I think is certainly defamotory. I am surpriced that the Sunday Leader has two editors and two editoarials.

I only ask you and the Su nday Leader to respect the Journalists Code of Ethics when writing articles.

    Thanks You Kindly

Michael Hardy: “These words of knowledge are exactly the same as the pronouncements of an astrologer”

But why Michael don’t you believe in astrologers?

    Dear Mr. kumar (December 26, 2010 – 3:39 am),

    You wrote:

“Dear Mr. Hardy, be careful, for the Lord Jesus said that all sins you commit will be forgiven but not speaking against the Holy Spirit;”

    Ok this is correct.

” these people are praying in the Spirit and you have to have the gift of interpretation to kn0ow what they are saying.”

But how do you know that this is true? It needs to be investigated.

So here’s a Biblical TEST that you or anyone else can apply: if what they say does not come true, then they are false prophets who must not be feared!
In fact I think stoning is also advocated in the case of false prophets. :)

And doesn’t the bible also say one must take great caution because many false prophets will come in Jesus name in the last days!
So if these are the last days as you seem to think, then should you also not advice great caution before rushing to support movements?

Besides you have misunderstood what the sin against the Holy Spirit is.
Just because someone claims the Holy Spirit it does not mean it is so, anymore than the goats in the parable who claimed to preach that Jesus was Lord actually had anything to do with Jesus.

The key point is that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth; so the sin against the Holy Spirit is the denial of truth and all the other attributes or fruits of the Holy Spirit.
So it is only a sin if you speak against these things including trying to prevent proper investigations that can get to the truth; fear that prevents you from carefully checking things out can also end up as a sin against the Holy Spirit.

Fearlesly apply the test and check it out for yourself!

  11. mars

    Dear Mr/Ms Aru,

Apparently this sort of thing seems to have the full blessing of the Roman Catholic Church!

  12. Heshan de Silva

Christians in Sri Lanka need to learn that they are destroying religious harmony in the country with aggressive and unethical means of spreading their religion. This Lalith character is a prime example of unscrupulous behaviour that threats peace and harmony in the country.

  13. hello – michael hardy.
come on – is this ethics of a journalist – to condemn a man who is doing the LORD’S WORK.

    • mandy

He is not doing Lord’s work, just seeking superiority and giving false speech to people.

  14. Asitha De Mel

Why isn’t the church speaking out against atrocities like this?

“Two were injured in a clash that erupted between detainees in the Vavuniyaa remand prison Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. when Tamil detainees assaulted a Mannaar-based Christian priest and a long-time humanitarian worker, who was recently held in remand over alleged charges that he had sexually abused Tamil girls displaced due to the Vanni war. The alleged sexual abuse of under-aged girls are said to have taken in a Home for Destitutes run by the priest at Murungkan in Mannaar district, legal sources in Mannaar said. ”

    http://tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=13&artid=33297

The abuse of underage children by priests cannot be accepted – ever. It is not only immoral but against the law of the land. The Church must speak against these crimes against humanity.

    • Somna

It’s very difficult to find a genuine Christian priest in Sri Lanka these days. Most do not follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, but are given to drink, women (and little boys), gaining money and posessions and other un-Christian like behaviours. These people will have to answer God on judgement day, and I would like to know what they will have to say for themselves!

  15. jeff parks

guy on CROSS verifyable fraud READ OLD TESTIMATE.

  16. dagobert

SOMNA…. Yes. You are correct. Its difficult to find a genuine priest anywhere in the world.
What people are denied today is the true scrits of times Jesus lived and preached. The so called bibiles we quote are adaptation after the 04th Century.
What we do not know is what existed of jesus teaching prior to this period.

What is said in the bibles are no different to what was said by the Gauthama Buddha. Its all about GOODNESS. Even Buddha must be a man of GOD.

When speaking about Roman Catholic, its all to do with power and Roman Empire.
In fact, Christianity is should be all to do with the MINISTRY OF JESUS CHRIST.
In all this, Faith is all to with one person. THE SOVEREIGN GOD. A GOD for all. One may call him the Heavenly Father.
We don’t need bibles & chronicals to lead a good life. We have wisdom and know what is right or wrong.
When we believe & pray, be it Jesus or Buddha or Mohamed, they have been righteous that they interceed for us to obtain our wants & necessasities.

Jesus teaching & doings would have been so powerful was overbearing the traditions of Nature Worshippers that the Roman Empire absorbed it for their advantage. Jesus was no Roman nor was in Rome. Therefore, the Roman Catholic Church is all to do with ROman Empire and seat of Power.

This is the reason we observe Priest like S.J.Emmanuel the former Seminarian of Jaffna who is leading the Global Tamil Forum, supporting the LTTE activities and who have said ” Tamil Heritage Comes First For Them”.
The Vatican or the Bishop of Jaffna does not mind his activities as such was the Catholic Church History.
Then there is UNCANEWS the propaganda arm of the Catholic Church. Why do they need a propaganda arm in the first place. In the news is another Seminarian Priest Sebastiampillai Anthony Mariyathas who suddenly urge people to pray for food to be there after these weather phenomenon. BUT he forgot to ask the people to pray to GOD asking to get rid of LTTE and Velu.
These Catholic Priest & Propaganda UNCANEWS are opportunists to deceive people for their advantage and wellbeing.

In this light comes LALITH PERERA. HE COULD BE MORE HONOURABLE THAN THE MEN IN CASSOACKS.
In that he brings people together and provide an opportunity for them to interact with GOD or assist to establish rank with GOD.
Some people who are able to comprehend do not need services of Lalith Perera. But some others do. Hence there is no harm in it.

We the people need need company, be seen with people, need socialising, assistance, networking ect., LALITH PERERA OFFERS ALL THESE AND MUCH MORE IN THAT ASSIST US TO RE-ESTABLISH OUR LINKS WITH GOD THE ALMIGHTY.
Finally, it is not Jesus, Buddha, Mohamed BUT THE GOD ALMIGHTY that hear us and deliever. IF ONLY PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND THIS FACT.

At the end of the day, there is nothing call a free lunch. It is the way you live that bappease GOD.

I am ashamed to see Tamils converting to Christianity , false speech given by these Christian priests. Tamils wake up and use your intelligence.- I work in the psychiatric department and know how preachers take advantage of vulnerable people. Be proud being a Hindu. All your ancestors are Hindus. Don’t let other religious priests brainwash you.

  17. mandy

Please don’t convert Tamils or Buddhists to Christianity or Islam. Those people who show no respect to people’s own religion are crap and committing to lots of sins and Karma. All preachers please respect other people’s religion and avoid making false speech. Every religion is great . No religion is superior and so avoid conning people with your speeches. Thank you.

  18. mars

    Mandy,

Tamils and Malayalis were among the world’s first Christians; and this was around 2000 years ago due to Thomas! In fact many of those early converts were also Brahmins.

Unfortunately the Portuguese Catholics around 1400 AD decided that these early Christians were heretics and forced them change their beliefs to fit the Roman Catholic Church.

We are born into this world without any labels, so we do not owe loyalty to any religious system Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Roman Catholicism, Buddhism, Islam etc.
It all depends what suits one best in this Kali Yuga to reach the Truth- but what is wrong is forced conversion and deceiving and exploiting the ignorant.

  19. godlover

    Dear Mars,

false prophets are the people who does not believe in holy trinity. shortly saying they don’t accept that the god the father, holy spirit and Jesus christ are 3 different stages but only one god. I can give you better examples to understand what it means.
    1) Muslims
    2) Jehova Witness

  20. mars

    Dear godlover,

The doctirine of the ‘holy trinity’ is an invention of the Roman Catholic Church.

Even the early Apostles didn’t hold such a confusing false doctrine.
The early Christians only held that Jesus and the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father/God, and Jesus was a man in whom God was revealed because he showed the way to the Father/God. They held that Jesus died in that cause as a man and was resurrected as a man.

Maybe Muslims and Jehovah’s witnesses are wrong, but so are ‘holy trinity’ believers.

  21. dagobert

People like Priest iddamalgoda have npo place in the catholic church. therefore, he is going after the Sun Goats deputy, Rayappu Joseph backing his statements.

This Iddamalgoda do not know how to gather Gods folk to him and his mind is straying using the Cassoack of course.

  22. carlos

There you go again Hardy, we have enough of problems as it is without you trying to rile people up. If people want to go there and wednesdays and praise the lord and talk about love and pator Perera wants to make a few bucks, who the heck cares, everybody is happy at the end.
Hmm. Im begining to wonder where you come from, and on what basis do you work for the leader, if im not mistaken i did overhear in a dressing room of a certain club house when this question was posed to a certain gentleman who could speak with authority on the Leader, you have been working as a student reporter or whatever they call it on an exchange basis.
So whats the deal, you get your visa extended by writing rubbish like this for certain intrested parties or you are a permanent resident now by virtue of marriage?. Good thing you were not around when Anagarika Dharamapala was making his fiery speeches in Panadura, what has that got to do with this you may ask. Figure it out. I have not been to any meetings of any religous group, nor do I support nay of them. But one day one of them will decide to come after you and expose you and the whole lot, you know who I mean….

  23. Nimal Maskeliay

I don’t know why the Leader needs to be so vitriolic in this piece. Why not let him preach his stuff, make his money as long as his followers are willing to follow him. Is the author jealous that he is making money? Is he wrong to ask for a new projector? What is wrong with that? The ‘real’ priests, clergymen and imams are doing all the things that you have described here to some extent. All of them ask for ‘donations’. All of them ask us to believe in some sort of thing (faith)… and all of them have to earn money to support themselves. So why pick on this group that poses little general risk to the society and is by and large minding its own business?

  24. menaka

In this entire discussion thread there is only one noteworthy comment that can be fully endorsed..that is that our dear Late Mr Lasantha Wikramatunga build this newspaper ” to be a paper to be looked at with honour and pride. It was a paper that always exposed a lot of things but at the same time did so with respect to the Journalistic crede and credentials. The Leader was never allowed to be used by Mr Wikrematunga for journalists to carryout their personal agendas”. Sadly today every journalist impostor thinks that writing trash or slinging mud at somebody like this will elevate them to the status of great journalists like Lasantha.

  25. AntiLalith

There is another Lalith – Dr. Lalith Mendis who runs scam operation called “The Apostle’s Sceptre”. Spectre, more likely. They rob hard-earned money as a form of illegal 10% tax from their gullible “congregation”, with no theological qualifications at all. They quote a scripture passage from Malachi to justify their ill-gotten gains. This passage was intended to provide grain (not sheckles or money) for the ancient Levites, a priestly tribe of Israel who were forbidden from owning property, for their own subsistence only. These people give a bad name to Christians, and encourage laws such as the Unethical Conversion law. The Catholic church teaches that all contributions should be voluntary, and the amount should not be a fixed part of earnings.

May God the Creator of the Universe have mercy on your poor soul Hardy. May the blood that Jesus shed on the cross of Calvary wash your eyes and mind and heart and open them to the true knowledge of the living God. I pray that like Soul who persecuted the Church at first you will have a mighty visitation of the Lord Jesus and know for yourself that He lives and reigns forever more. And that He died for your sins and mine that all who believe will escape eternal damnation and inherit the Kingdom of God. May God transform you like He did Saul into Paul and use you to win many souls to His Kingdom. I pray this in Jesus name.

you call your self a catholic, but guess u have not read the bible fully to understand the meaning of it … that’s why you write such a disgusting letter . i was a atheist when i started listening to Bro. TO ALL OF YOU ABOVE – “TO BE HEARD OR NOT TO BE HEARD” THIS IS THE QUESTION? – “TO BE SEEING OR NOT BE SEEING” IS ALSO A QUESTION?
THIS CAN ONLY BE ANSWERED BY THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THEIR WAY IN LIFE. LOOSING FAITH IN YOUR OWN GOD OR RELIGION/ GETTING INVOLVED IN DRUGS/ ALCOHOL/ GAMBLING/ IMMORAL BEHAVIOUR/ CRIME ETC., BE IT CHRISTIAN, BUDDHIST, HINDU, WHO FLOCK TO BRO LALITHS OR OTHER MEETINGS, SEEKING ABSOLUTION OF THEIR WEAKNESSES AND INNER GUILT OR BELIEVING IN LALITHS MIRACLES IS SAD. WHERE HAS THEIR TRUE FAITH GONE? NOT TO BE ABLE TO TALK TO YOUR GOD DIRECTLY AND ASK FOR HIS HELP/GUIDANCE OR A MIRACLE!?
ONE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BLACK/WHITE/RICH/POOR/ FAMOUS/ EDUCATED/MORALLY GOOD OR BELONG TO ANY RELIGIOUS BELIEF TO SPEAK TO GOD WITH AN OPEN HEART IN A QUIET SPOT AT ANY TIME AND WAIT FOR HIM TO ANSWER IN HIS OWN TIME. (NO ONE GOES TO THE FATHER BUT THROUGH ME) SAID JESUS CHRIST, SO MY QUESTION IS “HAS CHRISTIANITY BECOME A MONETARY MAKING THIRD PARTY ACCESSIBILITY TO GOD???

To me, what is absolutely ridiculous about Michael Hardy’s article is utter ignorance of the writer’s knowledge of the Bible, and he embodies all that is wrong with the Catholic Church and Catholicism as practiced today. He may be a Catholic, but certainly doesn’t seem to be a Christian. A Christian knows his Bible…Michael Hardy does not. He speaks of “speaking in tongues” as if it is something outlandish. Not if you know your Bible. The first congregation of believers (which incidentally the Catholic Church lays claim to as the first gathering of the Catholic Church) began with the Holy Spirit descending on the faithful and they in turn speaking in tongues. If you claim to be a any sort of Christian, whether it be Catholic, Protestant or any one of the denominations, you have to be believe that the message of the Bible is eternal, and not just for the people who lived during Biblical times. Miracles can still happen, people can still speak in tongues. You don’t lay claim to Christianity (or being a Catholic for that matter) by simply going to Sunday mass and receiving the communion. Over the last 50 years or so, a few enlightened Catholic bishops realised that Catholicism that was prevalent in their times had lost many of the practices and faith of the original movement, hence the origin of the Charismatic Catholic movement. You, Mr Hardy, are obviously one of the “traditional” Catholics who fail to understand what faith really is. Faith comes from an awareness of what you are incapable of, and what God is capable of. Going to Sunday mass does not make you a Christian. It may satisfy the obligations of claiming to be a Catholic. Mr Hardy, you show an absolute ignorance of the Bible. I am ashamed that you claim to be a Catholic. You are only a Christian by name, not by actions…and an utterly ignorant one at that. You are as ignorant about the Christian faith as are other non-Christians who know nothing of the Bible or its teachings. Please do not insult other Christians by claiming to be one of them.

It was people like you that put Jesus to a Cross. Repent and believe God will still forgive you..

As usual, we have conmen and religious frauds capitalizing on the gullible and insecure.

Another cheap form of manipulation of “modayas” by Lalith Perera the head of “mass delusionary movement” of Sri Lanka. Be aware of this ” American charismatic evangelical plague” which destruct the society at every level. They exploit you financially, break your marriage and dumb you down.

there should be tolerance in real spirituality.the writer must prove his allegations.it has become the norm for tradional religions not to tolerate others views and brand free thinkers as charletens and frauds.this will lead to fanaticism.who are we to judge.didn’t jesus say forgive them father, they do not know.

I read many good sensible comments by people. Leave a side the religions, if all of us can get rid of hatred and anger from our minds, this world will be a better place.

shut up!!!!though he earns money or travelling 3000 people daily praise the lord diretly because of the meetings held by brother lalith!! isn;t that sufficent.
and also people went along Jesus IN FAITH OF THE GOD to cure thier sicknesess. Like wise people attend to meetings held by btother lalith keeping their all faith even their breaths on the lap of the god NOT ON THE LAP OF BR. LALIThH. And also the aim of meetings is not curing sickness but praising the lord.
I know a one thing that this author just attend to the holy mass just for the sake of participating. he even dont know that there is a group called “pubuduva” in lot of parishs. if you dont know what is pubuduva ? here it is? it is a mass where people praise to the lord and giving thanks to the lord by clapping , dancing like all the catholic heros(david)did. Look psalm 95. and hyms which praise the lord are played. if u dont know plz attend
BECAUSE I WAS A MAN WHO WAS LIKE THIS AUTHOR
BUT JUST TO CHECK WHAT THIS IS I ATTEND.
THIS MEETINGS IS HELD NOT TO EARN MONREY OR TRAVELLING BUT TO PRAISE THE LORD SHOUTING AND DANCING (psalm 95)

  41. mevan
