Indo-Sri Lankan Couple Attacked In Australia
A Sri Lankan man and his Indian wife have been attacked in Melbourne, the latest in the series of hate crimes committed against especially Indians living in Australia, RTT News said in a report last week.
The incident occurred when a group of 25 drunken Australian men roughed up 60-year-old Ranjit Sahasranaman and his Indian-origin wife Agalya Sahasranaman, outside their home in Melbourne’s Carrams Down suburb last week.
Recalling the terrible ordeal, Sahasranaman who has lived in Australia with his family for 19 years, said he put up a fight until police arrived and dispersed the unruly gang. He said he was assaulted and racially abused by the gang who damaged his back fence.
According to Sahasranaman, he had to use a bar to fight off the thugs when they threatened to barge into his house through the back door. “They were throwing punches at me. They were calling names and told me to get lost from this country,” Sahasranaman said.
