Attanayake Calls for Removal of Fernando and Bandaranayake

UNP Secretary General Tissa Attanayake has informed the Cabinet Secretary that Ministers Johnston Fernando and Indika Bandaranayake can no longer hold their portfolios as they are no longer members of parliament.

In the letter, Attanayake has stated that under Section 44 (1) (a) of the Constitution only a member of parliament can hold a ministerial portfolio.

He has also stated that the two members cannot enjoy privileges of a government minister or even an MP, and that any decision arrived at Cabinet meetings presided over by Fernando and Bandaranayake would be considered null and void.

Fernando and Bandaranayake lost their parliamentary seats when parliament reconvened on March 9. Acting Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Kitulgoda informed them that they had lost their seat since they were expelled by the UNP following their defection to the government.

Since Fernando and Bandaranayake have withdrawn the petition filed against the party decision before the Supreme Court, they remain expelled from the party and have lost their parliamentary seats.

  1. Damn good for betraying the voters who voted for them. In actual fact, if they had an iota of shame, they should have resigned from their seats instead of waiting to be kicked out from the party. This should be the norm for all such Parliamentarians who think it is a joke to get elected from one party and then juump to another side for personal benefit and to hide their misdeeds. People vote for a party and those who win from those votes should stick to their party. I wish the 17 odd shameless pole vaulters also faced the same fate.

    • Psycho

Yes UNP betrayed the nation by joining the rabid JVP, in supporting the psychopath (like me) SF.

    • Well said..The 17 get elected with the help of the party,,,then they are tempted and greed takes over..One pole vault and they are set for the rest of their life with millions of tax payers’funds.
These rotters shopuld be tried and sent to remote islands to exist for the rest of their lives..Just serial, greedy pests..nothing more and of no use or benefit for the country..The scum of the pariahs.

  2. raguna

Those who try to hoodwink people by saying they take Minister posts to serve the people better should see the example set by Ms Jansila Majeed whose quiet work is being acclaimed by the whole world today.

  3. The pack of theives once elected does not like to leave the seat they get with every privilages. So they try all the tricks to get their seat back in the Parliment. By forgetting that they are being chosen by the people. For such idiots the people must teach a lesson. But again and again they support the culprits and send them to live with many privilages. SO THE PEOPLE OF SRILANKA SHOULD BE PUNISH NFORM SELLECTING THESE THIEVES. Modaya

  4. HERO

Those who crossed over from UNP to get ministerial privilages should be sent home this time.
