Expert Panel to Be Appointed After Pascoe’s Visit

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to appoint members to his expert committee only after UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe visits Sri Lanka to hold discussions with the government.

The UN Chief is reportedly finalizing the details of his visit.

“Ban Ki-moon is yet to finalize the date. However, he has stated that he will appoint his expert committee members only after Pascoe visits Sri Lanka,” a UN official was quoted in the local media.

The official had added that Ban Ki-moon was also unofficially preparing the number and names of the members he would appoint to his expert committee.

    Any expert panels to investigate US, UK and others in Iraq & Afganistan??

    • justitia

      In USA & UK there are very rarely false arrests,assaults,disappearances, abductions, extra judicial executions, deaths in custody & grabs by ‘white vans’.Anything of the sort is immediately and adequately dealt with, by the full force of the law. No amount of money can cover up injustice. There are no killings during elections, which are entirely free and fair.Even a president’s family member in USA or the Queen’s family member in UK, can be arrested even for traffic violations.
      They say they are fighting Al Quida in Iraq & Afghanistan and that civilians get killed in cross fire and erroneous bombings.

      Our situation is entirely different.

  2. ..of course this will follow..later but the involvement and activity of a so callled elected democratic govt. should be investigated first..in Iraq and Afganistan it is not the democratic govts. killed their own people..ever heard white vans in Iraq???

    • Bonapart

      What if we wish to convert to a non democratic government ? Then you will not have to worry about these panels , isn’t it ? So we and your LTTE will be counted at same level. That’s fairplay !
      I think that should be the way to answer this blood thirsty terrorists and their diaspora supporters like you !

      The days of IMF and the World Bank dancing to the western tune is nearing, or is over.

      The definition of “International Community” is not US, EU and their cohorts, they are the minority in the world. Vote in the human rigthts commission supporting SL proved it without any reasonable doubt,

      The days of white masters are gone, except for a few like you who lick their backside.

    Global Tamil Forum (GTF) calls for separatism in Sri Lanka. US, UK, and few others welcome such an ungovernable mess in Sri Lanka – with never ending conflicts that suit the west’s long held agenda.

    To this end, the western governments (under US patronage) are variously suspected of supporting the LTTE’s Eelam ambition, ignoring a massive military build-up during the CFA, applying pressure to prolong the war, and conspiring to rescue the LTTE leadership in the end.

    After the war, they intimidate and embarrass Sri Lanka (including the use of UN agencies) into accepting that ungovernable mess which will set her back socially and economically for another 30 years. With this prospect in mind, who should care for the GSP+ or some other lollies!!!

    So what is west’s real agenda; why so much focus about Sri Lanka?

    Although the world order is changing (e.g., China is the largest single lender to the US Government – or holder of US bonds), the mandarins in the US State Department still carry a cold war mentality. Nothing Sri Lanka does, short of down grading the long standing Sri Lanka – China relationship, will satisfy these US mandarins. This is their agenda.

    I recall how Khmer Rouge led Pol Pott was surreptitiously assisted across the Thai border to continue a civil war in Cambodia who happened to be a friend of China. The adage is “my enemy’s enemy is my friend; and my enemy’s friend is my enemy too”. So the plan is to keep Tamils’ hopes for Eelam alive so that the west is comforted by having a friend in Sri Lanka who is “west’s enemy’s friend’s enemy” (China – Sri Lanka – Eelam Tamils) – how sad!!!

    So, what should be Sri Lanka’s response to intimidation by the west; surely not chest beating and playing the victim etc.? Sri Lankan government must shut the window that allows entry of the west’s destabilising and intimidation activities.

    As in India, the Sri Lankan constitution should forbid any political party to campaign on the promise of separatism, and should go further and make separatism a treasonable crime. That would be a fitting monument to the thousands of Sinhala and Tamil people who died in a futile, cold war motivated, conflict.

    Phew! My comment above is far too long; I am becoming more and more like Leela!!
    In summary:
    •There is a West Vs China competition for strategic relationships all over the world;
    •The West failed to make Sri Lanka give up on China relationship, hence they want to destabilise Sri Lanka;
    •The West sides with the Eelam Tamils because the latter is against Sri Lanka State, and Sri Lanka State is a friend of China;
    •Eelam Tamils provide the window for the West to intimidate and embarrass SL, and a waning hope for getting the conflict going again;
    •Giving into separatist agenda will result in another 30 or more year conflict; and massive social and economic damage. Compared to this damage GSP+ etc are mere lollies;
    •Therefore, Sri Lanka should shut this window; make separatism a treasonable crime.

    • Bonapart

      china respects integrity of sri lanka while they attend to their needs.
      Optimistic aspect is China has never lost in it’s fights against the west in it’s history !

      • justitia

        There is no need to blame china or any other country for misrule by our own politicians.If there is real democracy, rule of law, accountability, social justice and absolute equality of all citizens irrespective of race,caste & creed, there will be peace and contentment.

    Asoka P – u are deluded!

    Human Rights are something a lot of the west see as non-negotiable. We’re not talking the US and UK.

    Sri Lanka is a pariah in the eyes of the west, only matched by their new friends who are dictators. China, Iran, Burma… Show me one democratic country that is overwhelmingly supporting the Corrupt Sri Lankan government… can’t find one? there’s a reason for that.

    You know what they say, If you sleep with dogs….. how’s the Kennel Asoka?

    • Asoka P

      John, your first sentence is deluded – just think of the West’s support for friendly yet abusive dictatorships, past and present – these are numerous. (Think of South America, most of those countries now broke free of US sponsored dictators. There are other friends in the Middle East whose abuses are readily forgotten and forgiven).

      Your second sentence is uninformed – we should believe that India is not a democracy because you say so.

      My issue is about the selective and hypocritical use of concerns over human rights to disguise ‘cold war’ style actions by the west to destabilise Sri Lanka.

      I am not a running dog of the hypocrites!!

    • Bonapart

      JOHn , What is the point of excluding US and UK when you talk about human rights. They are the people who attempt to behave like policeman while breaking all the laws they are preaching to the others. You are a fool to start your argument with that point.

      Before arguing tell me the definition of the word “democratic country”. It is only in the books. Non of these bloody westerners are democratic when they handle developing countries. They are selfish and use our countries to their economic and political advantage.

      It’s the begining of a new era against so called democratic westerners !

  7. Asoka P

    To understand the nature of West Vs China competition that drives West’s jaundiced view of Sri Lanka, we need to look at the situation in the horn of Africa, a strategically important region (its location at the mouth of the Red Sea, untapped oil wealth etc.,).

    In the horn of Africa, the conflicts are kept brewing primarily thanks to this ‘cold war’ style competition. With each regime change the West’s interest in human rights wax, ebb and wane. Not that anything dramatic happened as far as the human rights are concerned – abuses continue, in some cases worse than ever (and the Western media does the loyal thing – highlight or suppress news according to the West’s interests).

    China is no saint in this regard – but it drives its agenda to win hearts and minds through development aid as well as financially propping up any friendly government. China does not play the human rights card, probably because its record at home is awful (think of Tibet).

    My point is that Sri Lanka is caught in this world power play, hence look beneath West’s hypocritical human rights façade. Make decisions on the basis of national interest alone as the rest of the world does, and the patriotic Sri Lankans will follow. This point seems to have been missed by the UNP to its electoral detriment.

    The West, in particular US and UK, is not doing any favours to Ranil and UNP, by dragging him into their hypocritical stand. They are helping the nationalistic Rajapaksa win by a thumping majority. Such is life in a ‘democracy’.
