Maithripala: Emergency Extended to Detain LTTE Suspects
SLFP General Secretary and Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that the Emergency Regulations were extended to enable the further detention of over 10,000 LTTE suspects currently in government custody.
He said these individuals would have to be released if the Emergency Regulations were withdrawn. He added that the regulations were in no way intended for suppression of dissent, as alleged by the opposition parties.
Sirisena made this remark in response to a question posed by a journalist at a press briefing yesterday.

This is total violation of basic human rights, held for more than 10months under emergency regulations 10,000 people languish in camps while the TID (Terrorism Investigation Dept) is harassing and intimidating MR’s political opponents.
These detainees must have right of representation and a voice (not those of Karuna and his buddies who are MR boot lickers) but true and fair representation, otherwise before long the very camps that detain and harass these people will turn to rebel camps.
