- Basil Rajapaksa Says Western Nations Jealous Of Sri Lanka’s Success

Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa claimed on Thursday that Western nations are shocked at the fact that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has succeeded in handling an issue, terrorism, which they have thus far been unable to tackle.
He explained that most Western nations have failed in many aspects, including the economy, and are unable to fathom how Sri Lanka managed to end a 30-year war, reduce unemployment, increase reserves, increase remittances and record strong economic growth.
“Their people are asking them about what they have been doing and they have to find excuses,” he said. “They are jealous of us and are therefore trying to teach us a lesson. In a way they are trying to punish us and they won’t give us a chance.”
Rajapaksa went on to say that Sri Lanka is ready to shake hands with Western countries, but only as a sovereign country with self-respect. “Under no circumstance would the country kneel and beg,” he said.
When asked if the government was now trying to mend its soured relations with the Western world, Rajapaksa said the administration had been honest with Western nations from the outset and it was now up to the West to do its part.
Rajapaksa observed that if the West wanted to withdraw the GSP+ concession, they could have done it earlier. “They did it to embarrass the government. They timed it for before the presidential election.”
Rajapaksa noted that the EU also failed to deny a statement made by JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe during the presidential election campaign to the effect that the GSP+ concession would be restored if Mahinda Rajapaksa was defeated.
“It is purely a political thing,” he said. Rajapaksa claimed that the GSP+ concession given by the EU to Sri Lanka was in fact a subsidy given by the EU to its own consumers. “When we remove taxes from any imported item, it is called a subsidy to our local consumers. Therefore, when the EU has removed taxes from their imports, that too is a subsidy to their people.”

Most of the comments here are out of focus and surely doesn’t know anything about import “thinking” of the EU.
Taking away the GSP+ is detrimental for the European importers and distributors, more than for the Sri Lankan exporters.
Sri Lanka will export anyway, but the importers and distributors have to keep their business going. They consider Brussels and their individual governments as meddling and foolish.
When the distributors won’t have enough to sell and at a good price, they’d take their own governments to task. At this moment the Customs Rates are not changed in a given European country. There are hundreds of pages with such “concessionary” rates in those books.
Practically none of the people, who comment here and even the officials of all kinds of “export” chambers haven’t even seen such a book, let alone know such books exist.
This is a political action, not a business action, and that’s why BR is right.
All of these knew how Tamils abroad work; quite servilely, so they were waiting to have coastline and a part of Sri Lanka under Prabakaran, so they can have a cheap labour to produce goods for the West.
The governments of the West are jealous, because they have never won a war and they are getting hammered in any country they put their leg in.
UK is actually in dire straits in economy,and most of the Western Europe is still trying to recover from the last crisis. Only the “newly” added countries to EU have got out of the crisis, for the citizens of the newly added countries know how to, while the former Western countries are clueless.
If you guys have any doubts about the economic crisis of the Western Europe, have a read of their government economic reports for 2009 and their forecast for 2010.
Sri Lanka is in an interesting situation; war is over and money and energy can be used for making it prosperous. AND the West knows about that, and they are worried.
They also know that Sri Lanka is now stable and also that Sri Lanka is situated in a highly strategic geographical place. That’s why the West covertly helped Prabakaran, so that they would have another country to dictate to. They are pretty mad, because MR and GR foiled their idea and won the victory for Sri Lankans!

The fact is that today consumers have a choice , if SL does not warrant a tax concession they will go elsewhere such as Bangladesh or Vietnam and local exports will drop.
Big companies such as MAS or Brandix will survive for two reasons, firstly they are large enough to move their expertise elsewhere globally, and secondly they can afford to manufacture keeping lower margins.
This will result in many small industry owners having to shut down due to financial difficulties thus making many people redundant. As it is the cost of living is so high that families cannot survive on small incomes so this will be a problem for the government. When Ariya says that the the removal of concessions will not be as detrimental to local exporters he is obviously reffering to the big boys , they forget the honest middle class entrepreneur who is immediately bankrupt because he cannot meet his loan repayments.
This action is also cruel on part of the EU , it punishes the nation as whole for the acts of a few.
Corruption in Sri Lanka is the most destructive thing because it drags the country down and benefits only a handful.
Having said that a country deserves the government it votes in , so I guess we Sri Lankans will have to live box on.

Have a look at Customs Rate books in teh European countries, if you frogs want to find out that the rates are for the importer, not for the exporter of a country like Sri Lanka.
Even before the GSP+ stuff, products of countries like Sri Lanka was allowed to import into European countries at a lower rate. Have anyone of the frogs know about that?

The GSP gives a 5 % advantage in landed cost over products from countries with out the concession. This is one way we can offset the hi cost of production in this country. This will drive away investors to other countries that have the facility and also make our products non competitive. Hooray!!!!!!!
Even without the GSP+ and any 5% advantage, the European importers and distributors will buy from Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan product has quality that the “cheap” countries cannot match. Remember, it is the end-consumer who dictates the price in a consumer society.
Chinese, Vietnamese, Bangladesh, even Indian goods are usually considered of inferior quality, but not Sri Lankan.
The end-consumer in Europe doesn’t even know where is Sri Lanka, but they understand quality, so they buy.
Most products don’t even have the tag “made in Sri Lanka”!

Quality of the houses they build? Practically every white, who works in these NGOs and INGOs are people, who can’t find good work in their countries, and most of them don’t even have any higher education. If any has some higher education, that education won’t give them any jobs in their country!

Theres no point turning this into a ‘hate’ situation. The use of terms such as ‘white’ are unnessasery and rather uncalled for. MNC’s and TNC’s are just fulfilling their macroeconomic objectives in terms of subsidies on behalf of Lankan, mind you we compete with such subsidies with other economies ie. the ‘Tiger economies. You probably know this but people reading might not.
Either way, the averege training and education standards of a western or more appropriately featured as a developed nation does unfortunately hold a higher standard of those in Lanka. You cannot compare the minority of the 8% Lankan successors to those of a developed nation. Its not because they’re not competitive because they’re and probably as efficient. But its due to the factor that their quantites of the same standard are much higher in number.
NGO’s in return do more good than bad. Its true that charitable organisations do have its perks and do end up recieving benefits in ratio to their community service. But it is inevetiably that its a service that brings opportunities. Nowadays, most NGOs bring out schemes of sustaining development. Theres no such thing as a charitable organisization that does not act as a chairty by depletings its personal perks to generate more income for its projects. Its accepted and should be as its a benefitial service to both parties.
Trust me, incentives and government grants are provided for Western local citizens to flourish in higher education and ambitions ie UK. They dont come to Lanka because their out of work and dont recieve enough pay. NGO jobs are routine and seasonal. They’re not permenant and the average age rate of a foreign NGO is between 23-32. Ideal excellence for their CV creditentials. They come for their own benefit. And usually spend a time span of max of 2 years and min of 2 months. If you have a problem with the work ethic of foreign NGO then i suggest you establish and Lankan local workforce in order to mitigate the struggles in vulnerable areas.
Either way acknowledging NGO and INGOs as ‘Whites’ is incorrent and unprecise. They consist of many ethnicities ie Lankans Asians and majority are Europeans and African Americans. In perspective of a Lankan as I am, I dont wish to be called as ‘Paki’ or a ‘Curry’ It is inevitable that i most likely would be abroad, but that doesn’t account for us to be as less backward and disrespectful.

Fonseka had reached the end of his ego trip. SF had forgotten that he would not have become the commander of the army, if not for Rajapakse. But those who called him a ‘war hero’ at the time of his need remember it. They were sad because SF has joined those that ridiculed him and called him a murderer, racist and a bigot at the time. All supporters of SF today had been LTTE supporters or its sympathisers or those that put obstacles for the war in one way or another.
Most of those opportunistic political parties and individuals like UNP, SLMP, Mangala, WjedasaR, Mano etc that cajoled him and instigate SF to contest against Rajapakse have already abandoned him. Of course, the JVP fanatics that had done as much harm to Sri Lanka like LTTE hang on to SF for they have no choice.
Sinhala people are not illiterates. On the contrary, you can hardly find any Sinhalese that do not read political debates on the news papers, or listen to radios, or watch in TVs. They know who has done what. That is why they have accepted President Rajapakse’s pay rise offer of Rs. 2,500/=, instead of SF’s offer of Rs.10,000/=.
In spite of that, like those who have a grudge against Rajapakses that post comments all over the internet, Fonseka and his beloved wife seem to undermine the popularity of President Rajapakse’s and over estimated their own. They do not know Sinhala Buddhists hate their new found friends, the so-called International Community, Norway, NGOs, and Christian Evangelists. They knew that it is that lot that supported LTTE for the last thirty years and it is they who want to divide this country. You need no more proof than this GSP episode.
I see no reason why we should not negotiate with EU to get GSP. But that doesn’t mean we should let them bully us and barge into our affairs. Opinion of those like Jane Warrant, Citizen Silva, Dr.Balasuriya, Edwards, et al are by far the minority in this country. I feel sorry for them for they do not know our history. They do not know what piratical ancestors of these Europeans had done to our forefathers indeed to the innocent people of the entire world. Garment factories are being closed down, because those control the industry are looking for countries where labour is much cheaper than Sri Lanka.They moved to Sri Lanka because it was the second cheapest country at that time and there were good local managers producing quality goods. Some have already gone to Bangal Desh and Vietnam.
You can keep them in SL if you can reduce the wages of the girls who are already struggling to pay the room rent. They may have to rent a bed in a shanty timber room like the way they were doing in Philippines in 1980s(as documented by Fr. Tissa Balasuriya). How they work is during the 3 shifts per day, one girl sleeps, second girl roams around the town while the third girl is doing her shift in the factory.

Village girls had to come to free trade zones to work in the “Rag Trade” where the rich Sri Lankans, Brokers and international rich made money because of nearly “slave labour” in Sri Lanka. The girls were lost in the City. More Shanties were created to accommodate these girls who got money hardly enough for their food and lodging (Shanty). Some were subjected to sexual harassment some had two jobs (the few girls who lost their dignity). It is not too late to stop Colombo becoming another Manila.
The drugs and lots of other wises(I don’t like to use the words) became more common among the young people, lost their national identity and now they sell their body parts(not donate) to foreigners. I also have a feeling that the MR government will have problems when they find it is hard to compete in the world market. Just like the way they won the war they will have to come out with alternative ways of solving this problem. To my knowledge, The material is sent to Sri Lanka and the lot was taken back (if quality of finished goods are up to there standard) by the same company. I know for sure, that these companies were looking for places where the labour is cheaper than Sri Lanka, for the last 10 years. I know the Sri Lankan experts in clothing and marketing, were sent to Bangal Desh and remote parts of India to look for cheaper labour. They have already found them(Labour is cheaper in terms of $US). Most of these US companies are owned by Jew businessmen who want more and more profits. It is correct for Basill to say that the GSP+ concession given by the EU to Sri Lanka was in fact a subsidy given by the EU to its own consumers.
We should have kept our Textile Industries (and nourished them) without taking advise from foreign economists. Local garment manufacturers such as Hydramani , DASA(poor man took a long time to establish the industry) and Velona lost even their local market during the same period. Jaffna farmers who were doing well growing Onions and Potatoes and chillies to make the country self sufficient, lost their lively hood during this period. I can remember one educated, foolish lady cursing Mrs. Sirima B, saying “ when Jaffna farmers became rich they wanted the Ealam”.

He also commanded the same battalion in Operation “Strike Hard” and Operation “Thrivida Balaya” in 1990. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and served as the Commandant of the Kotelawala Defence Academy at the time of his retirement in 1992.
During his 20 years of military service, Rajapaksa has received awards for gallantry from three Presidents of Sri Lanka, J.R. Jayewardene, Ranasinghe Premadasa and D.B. Wijetunga.[5]

I doubt these counties are “jealous” of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is see as a third world country, and who has to constantly be given aid and helped out when disaster strikes. It is easy for these Rajapakses to keep playing the victim, and blaming other nations for everything, and accuse them of trying to get at Sri Lanka. Distracting the nation from the corruption and crimes being committed by the Rajapakse regime by blaming other countries, leaders, and organizations who criticize Sri Lanka, seems to be the easiest thing to do. Sri Lankans tend to overlook local politics when International bodies are accused of plotting against Sri Lanka. It brings out the patriotism of the people, and unfortunately the tendency to overlook what the government is up to.

ha – he claims GSP plus is a subsidy- firstly he should look up what a subsidy really is, (its not the same as a tax exemption) secondly that’s hillarious as the majority of our exports under gsp plus are garments. but by garments read panties because 90% of our garment industry is devoted to manufacturing underwear so basil claims the EU is offering its citizens a panty subsidy…

All that GLP’s argument boils down to is this: We are entitled to refuse, and that refusal is an exercise of sovereignty. No more, no less.

GSP+ will be gone does not matter who will win the SL parliamentary election. If UFPA wins, the reason will be human rights abuses during the war. If UNF wins, GSP+ will be removed because of worker rights abuses in SL industry.
