The Education Department has suffered a Rs. 13 million loss due to the actions of 33 students who had stolen exam papers for teacher trainees at the Uva National College of Education in Bandarawela.
According to the Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe, the examinations which were due to be held on March 1, 2 and 5 had to be re-scheduled due to the leaking of the exam papers.
“With the ongoing investigations into the matter, it will take another two or three weeks before the Department of Examinations will be able to decide when the exams should be held again”, Commissioner Edirisinghe said.
The 33 students involved in the incident have been arrested.
Students broke into rooms at the National College and stole three question papers on February 28, Police Media Spokesman SP Prashantha Jayakody said.
“The investigation is currently being carried out by the Bandarawela Police. The students who have been arrested are awaiting trial,” he added.
