Imprisoned in a Naval apartment for over six weeks, the beleaguered
Retired General Sarath Fonseka says that he is being treated worse than a common criminal.
“I am incarcerated within these walls for daring to uphold democracy and good governance. The treatment afforded to me is shocking and a common criminal would perhaps be treated better. I am confident that I am the legitimately-elected president of Sri Lanka. Due to irregularities in the electoral system, the people of Sri Lanka have been robbed of the effects of a vibrant democracy. However, this is a temporary glitch. I have petitioned the Supreme Court with my concerns and have asked them to consider the possibility of annulling the result,” Fonseka said in response to written questions posed by The Sunday Leader.
Vowing to continue what he called his constitutional right to enter politics, he said, “I was entrusted with the task of returning peace to Sri Lanka. When I delivered that elusive peace and defeated the shackles of terrorism from this island nation, with the help of a disciplined, intelligent and committed armed force, I was hailed as a hero. Yet when I wished to exercise my constitutional right to resign from the Army and enter politics, I found a most undemocratic union against me.”
In a statement to The Sunday Leader in which he handwrote a request to have it translated into Sinhala and Tamil too he adds, “When I decided to continue with my quest to return democracy to Sri Lanka, through the parliamentary elections, I was arrested. The very people who talk of democracy, the rule of law and good governance and those responsible to the people, have had me arrested in an attempt to silence my entry into the parliament. I am confident that no matter where I am, I will continue with my efforts to return Sri Lanka to a true democratic state. That was my desire before. That is my desire now. That is my desire for the future of all Sri Lanka.”
Fonseka meanwhile appealed to the United Nations for help writing, “I appeal to the Secretary General of the United Nations as well as to all governments who are committed to fair play, good governance and to the people of the world to help protect me from the flagrant injustice that has been imposed upon me. In no other practicing democracy has this ever happened before.”
The government has run into a series of problems in trying to prosecute General Fonseka in a military tribunal with the General’s lawyers raising a number of legal challenges. While the government claims that the General is being held in a luxury flat used by a former Navy Commander the General maintains his current accommodation is not fit even for a common criminal.
Its true that we don’t need hot water in this tropical country. But the fact is that he is a man who laid his life for the country and as a result he is under drugs lifetime to keep alive. Though I am not a medical professional I believe he needs a little more comforts than an ordinary man just to survive.

The Indian interest is far deep rooted than some of the specifics you mention, Mr Sheriff.
In the 1980s the Eelam maps promoted by the LTTE not only included the North and East of Sri Lanka but also much of the Tamil Nadu. The LTTE was portraying an ethnically cohesive nation not dissimilar to the aspirations of present day Kurds whose ‘nation’ overlaps Iraq, Turkey, and Iran etc.
However, the inclusion of Tamil Nadu frightened the hell out of the Indian Government. Although the LTTE maps in the later years did not include Tamil Nadu, one does not need to be an Einstein to foresee that, once established as a separate nation in Sri Lanka, the Eelam movement would have enveloped Tamil Nadu.
Delhi strategists should have seen a sovereign Eelam government in the island of Sri Lanka as an unstoppable threat to Indian national security, given (a) proximity to Tamil Nadu, (b) Eelam’s access to the Indian Ocean, (c) battle hardened LTTE fighting force, (d) determination, resources and the influence of the Tamil Diaspora and (e) the mischievous destabilising international agenda directed against India by other powers.
The way the India behaved towards the conflict in Sri Lanka makes perfect sense, from an Indian national security perspective.

Thank you for comments. You are a good person it sounds to me. The politics is something that only a few understand. Its a skill, an art or anything else to act on depenending on situation faced with. To my understanding, although there are thousands politicians in the country ranging from the Parliament, Provincial councils & pradeshiya sabhas etc., there is only a handful of men who have actually mastered this subject in SL. Currently I hardly see any one other than MR who has groomed to a level as a master in the trade. Please do not get angry before reading the whole comment!
I am not trying to eulogise him as, as you describe, his ‘cohorts’. And I must say I am not that pls!
If politics is something one can learn by going to university then it would be something that every body could achieve by spending a couple of years there. No,its not so! This is all to do with the ‘vision’, ‘mission’ & ‘passion’ (vmp) endeavour that one would develop for a long period in one’s life. Please read biographies of known world politicians and see how they have developed the rare traits in them from those of common people. Its different from ordinary. Its a different mindset altogether. I guess MR is someone who weaved his political fabric more cleverer than any other so called leader in the country. His moves are quite unpredictable from political angle to other politicians but its clear or it can be otherway aroud in ceratain situation and complex to ajudge. It would be only himself might know what is next. I am pretty sure even he was given the challenge to lead the army and defeat LTTE he would smart out SF by miles ahead. I am sorry if you’d get unhappy for this opinion. Its a deep perfection. In politics there is a very tiny chance for errors. MR’s secret of success is also attention towards his near zero in erring. There are crucial instances in politics that might be regarded to lose in elections in certain electorate as an advantage. Why I like president MR there where he is now is because the country must overcome the unfavourable situations that was struggling with. Major problem was done away with already. We still do not know where he going to take us in the direction of development but with what we see suc as the infrastructuer, energy, ports, IT and all give us a slight idea isn’t it. Past three decades grappleling with a senseless puppet war of LTTE we have wasted US$200 BILLION (not less than). MR. put the full stop to this criminal act, so to say, of massive scale. Added to all that the General had a very bad mouth, Marasinha has very rightly reminded his remarks during the election. Had he won I wonder what would have happened to Mahinda, Gota and Basil! Government has it self violated the normal law of the land giving special previlages to suspects who are in the custody. Again I wish to remind my friends that our children all over the world read these comments and we must be very careful with our expresions.
I have read most of the comments for either side. What each of us write here does not make an iota of change in Sri Lanka or the politics.

Sri lanka has to make some short term sacrifces to get rid of the Rajapakse thugs. Its high time the UN imposed economic sancions and the masses aggitated to over throw this illegal government.
