UNP admits millions of rupees in donations un-audited

By Nirmala Kannangara

The main opposition UNP has admitted  that hundreds of millions of rupees worth of donations received by the party have never been recorded or audited.

Speaking to the Sunday Leader UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake revealed that the money the party receives during election campaigns is not  audited, and admitted that the party does not even keep  records of the funds its receives during election campaigns.

He insisted however that the money the party received for ordinary(non election) party work was audited.

“The UNP has received funds from its well-wishers on previous occasions but we never keep records of what we get during elections but obviously we keep records on all the other monies that are received for party work,”  Attanayake said.

“Our transactions are transparent and there is nothing dubious in terms of the UNP’s transactions. However we are not accountable for the money said to have been received for the presidential campaign as neither the UNP nor its affiliated parties handled the finances. That was done by the NDF fund raising committee.”

According to Attanayake the funds that were received by the New Democratic Front (NDF) for its presidential election campaign were handled by the NDF fund raising committee headed by Mahinda Haradasa, a close associate of the defeated candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka.

What moron’s!! The UNP cannot even keep track of their own monies or curb corruption in their own party but are claiming that they can run a country. Where are the checks and balances for your party Ranil? If you cannot even run your party how can you run a country?

UNP is in need of proper overhaul.Forget about elections defeats and cross
overs. It is not doing anything to improve it’s image except engaging in century
old and unsuccessful approaches. There are stupid mistakes it is making
during all important election times that cost the party immensely.Tampering
with nomination papers on cmc election and consequent loss was not enough
for it to be on the vigil. It makes another round of utterly careless one, this time
in moneragala. Some electorates are not represented in this general election.
UNP is a brand name.People buy it’s products. It’s market has been taken for
granted by its non attractive sales technics. If you don’t look after your own
market, somebody else will and people will go after alternatives.

UNP is a squeaky clean party.

It is NDF now DNA/JVP of Sarath, that smells rat!.

However by intermingling with these dead rats, possibility of getting infected is very high.

unaudited for a good reason. who wants the cash strapped government coming behind you for a handout for giving money to the opposition? where or when can we expect a Idi audit? please speak.

Tissa Attanayake was recently in Australia looking for properties for which the funds were coming from the unaudited UNP funds.( Is this repetition of the Gamini Dissanayek’s Apple Orchards)

  7. Sometime ago I sent a cheque to Ranil Wickramasinghe of $1000 to his 5th Lane house, Colombo 7, the money was not even acknowledge receipted. The cheque had been duly cashed. Due to utter disgust I did not send any money to him afterwards. This is the Gospel Truth.

  8. When I was in Sri Lanka I rang his office. His private secretary answered. After hearing my name (my real name, not the above) he hung up the phone ( my doantion of $1000 had then be cashed!). Did Ranil put the money into his pocket? SB Dissanayake said this is what he does. He now got millions and travel around the world always. then his blue eyed boys.

Have you got any documents to prove that you have sent $ 1,000 and it was cashed.
If it was cashed, who has cashed it ???
The Bank should tell you the name of the person who cashed it.
To my knowledge, no one can cash a Dollar checque in SL, unless it was deposited in to an account.
Please get the facts right before insulting honest gentlemen.

      • This is 100% true. The cheque was written in the name of “Ranil Wickramasinghe”. It was A$1000. someone (probably Ranil) cashed it, as the money can only go into his account. The problem is that he never issued a receipt to me, as in my letter I gave my address, but I ddi not ask for a receipt. I was going to send him more money that time, but I did not after that incident. I was very angry with him for sometime but not anymore.

Dont try to be a show pony “Shobana”. Do you think those who are in this forum are suckers?

So you are sending cheques in the name of Ranil,(not the party) rubbish.

By the way can you send me some money ? I will definitely give you a receipt.

        • Ruby

He must have thought it was a b’day present as the cheque was drawn in his favour.

        • anthony jones

Was this money despatched before or after his matrimonial alliance, if before he must have taken it as an advance on the dowry, the greedy so and so, did he not inherit enough wealth.

Ranil w is a gentleman, he does not need a U.S.$. 1,000.00 to survive and why was it not addressed to the United National Party. a j.

    • KABAB

Dear Shobhana Chitty: First of all you don’t have a real name. You must be a supporter of Royal family. Using this column, you are trying to sling mud on Ranil.

  9. Labby

    Well said Raj.

  10. Kingkong

And UNP wants to eradicate corrupyion in the country! UNP is a corruotion den!

  11. Yes I sent the cheque to Ranil , I thought he needs money for the party, becasue I wanted him to come power. I don’t mind he takes it himslef, but he should have acknowledged receipt. I was going to send more like that, but if he would keep silent after taking my money why should I send more? the way his private secretary discarded me I got piss off. I will not send any money as I know he (and all other politikos) such money is nothing as now they are billionaires.

Why is it that the Westdern journalists and NGO’s, who are experts on the Rajapakse regime’s human rights record, have nothing to say about things like this? Shobana, I’m sorry that you were taken advantage of. This exchange being as public as it is, I hope that someone, somewhere, will realise that maybe it’s time for a little transparency and decency in the way the leadership in this delightful country treat rank and file.

    Shobana

Thanks for the info. It is a good lesson for any other donor. Remember the US$570,000 cash recovered from SF’s son-in-law’s mum’s safe deposit boxes.
They all corrupt, you have to select who is less corrupt or better than the rest.

  14. Dushantha Kurera

This is why RW does not want to give up the leadership. He does not mind loosing the elections, WAKE UNP Get rid of this useless leader who has ruined thr great party !!!

  15. I still love my leader Ranil. I sent the money to him to use any way he wants. My only problem is that it was not acknowledged. I know I am a small fish for him, so I will not send money to him, but I am an ardent UNP supporter (kepuwath UNP). I want UNP to win. I hate horapakse.

  16. Preethi

He is happy to stay as the Opposition Leader for this reason. No responsibility, but keeps getting good money – no tax liability, no audit, nothing. Who wouldn’t. He is also surrounded by not so clean people and many of them. UNP is not a clean party. Sad but true. Now they are even incapable of forming a Government. I wonder whether they would get even 40 seats this time. The party of DS, Sir John, Dudley, JR, Premadasa, Lalith and Gamini is doomed. It is the duty of the party loyalists to get rid of him atleast now. Do it fast.
