Sri Lankan-born Sara Malani Perera was finally released last Wednesday, April 14. It was indeed the beginning of a new year for the 38-year-old Bahraini, who had been held at the Mirihana Police for more than 30 days.
She was held under the Emergency laws the after being accused of writing two books, From Darkness To Light and Questions And Answers. The authorities alleged that she had insulted Buddhism and other religions.
Perera was released last week after paying a surety bail of Rs. 5000.
According to Lakshman Dias, her lawyer, “Perera now has a clean record and she can go back to living her normal life.”
The original compliant against Perera came from a member of the staff at the courier agency ARAMEX. Requesting anonymity, he told The Sunday Leader why he saw it fit to report the book to the police.
“I was very suspicious because her name was Perera but she was wearing a Muslim outfit. So I questioned her and she told me she had converted. Then I got more suspicious and checked her book.” The ARAMEX employee said that the book “let down Buddhism very badly. I’m not even a strong Buddhist, and I was stunned at how much it insulted my religion.”
He then called the Buddhist Cultural Ministry, which took action against Perera.
When asked if he truly believed that Perera should be punished for this publication, his reply was “Definitely.”
Perera’s lawyer defended her right to write.
“It is her right to publish the book – she has done nothing wrong,” Dias said.

The first mistake was the impletentation of Sinhala as the language of the nation, then the paranoia of the so called Buddhist to create issues, the Darley Road- Mcallum road roundabout in Colombo is one good example.
The late Rev. Fr Legoc who was a leading educationalist who had passed away was the late rector of St. Joseph’s College a premier catholic school, and a statue of the late rector was to be errected and all the necessary approvals had been obtained.

Please don’t forget Sri Lanka is a Sinhala Buddhist country. Catholism spread just for the sake of conversion is an invasion. If a person seeks the good Lord on his own, then he/she is a Catholic. MUHAMMAD (PBUH) IN BUDDHIST SCRIPTURES:
1. Buddha prophesised the advent of a Maitreya:
A) Almost all Buddhist books contain this prophecy. It is in Chakkavatti Sinhnad Suttanta D. III, 76:
“There will arise in the world a Buddha named Maitreya (the benevolent one) a holy one, a supreme one, an enlightened one, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe:
“What he has realized by his own supernatural knowledge he will publish to this universe. He will preach his religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at its climax, glorious at the goal, in the spirit and the letter. He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and thoroughly pure; even as I now preach my religion and a like life do proclaim. He will keep up the society of monks numbering many thousands, even as now I keep up a society of monks numbering many hundreds”.
B) According to Sacred Books of the East volume 35 pg. 225:
“It is said that I am not an only Buddha upon whom the leadership and order is dependent. After me another Buddha maitreya of such and such virtues will come. I am now the leader of hundreds, he will be the leader of thousands.”
C) According to the Gospel of Buddha by Carus pg. 217 and 218 (From Ceylon sources):
“Ananda said to the Blessed One, ‘Who shall teach us when thou art gone?’
And the Blessed one replied, ‘I am not the first Buddha who came upon the earth nor shall I be the last. In due time another Buddha will arise in the world, a holy one, a supremely enlightened one, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe, an incomparable leader of men, a master of angels and mortals. He will reveal to you the same eternal truths, which I have taught you. He will preach his religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at the climax and glorious at the goal. He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and pure such as I now proclaim. His disciples will number many thousands while mine number many hundreds.’
Ananda said, ‘How shall we know him?’
The Blessed one replied, ‘He will be known as Maitreya’.”
(i) The Sanskrit word ‘Maitreya’ or its equivalent in Pali ‘Metteyya’ means loving, compassionate, merciful and benevolent. It also means kindness and friendliness, sympathy, etc. One Arabic word which is equivalent to all these words is ‘Rahmat’. In Surah Al-Anbiya:
“We sent thee not, but as a mercy for all creatures.”
[Al-Qur’an 21:107]
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was called the merciful, which is ‘Maitri’.
(ii) The words Mercy and Merciful are mentioned in the Holy Qur’an no less than 409 times.
(iii) Every chapter of the Glorious Qur’an, except Chapter 9, i.e. Surah Taubah begins with the beautiful formula, ‘Bismillah Hir-Rahman Nir-Rahim’, which means ‘In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful’.
(iv) The Word Muhammad is also spelt as ‘Mahamet’ or ‘Mahomet’ and in various other ways in different languages. The word ‘Maho’ or ‘Maha’ in Pali and Sanskrit mean Great and Illustrious and ‘Metta’ means mercy. Therefore ‘Mahomet’ means ‘Great Mercy’.
2. Buddha’s doctrine was Esoteric and Exoteric:
According to Sacred Books of the East, volume 11, pg. 36 Maha-Parinibbana Sutta chapter 2 verse 32:
“I have preached the truth without making any distinction between exoteric and esoteric doctrine, for in respect of truths, Ananda, the Tathagata has no such thing as the closed fist of a teacher, who keeps something back”.
Muhammad (pbuh) on the commandment of Almighty God delivered the message and doctrine without making any distinction between esoteric and exoteric. The Qur’an was recited in public in the days of the Prophet and is being done so till date. The Prophet had strictly forbidden the Muslims from hiding the doctrine
3. Devoted Servitors of the Buddhas:
According to Sacred Books of the East volume 11 pg. 97 Maha-Parinibbana Sutta Chapter 5 verse 36:
“Then the Blessed one addressed the brethren, and said, ‘Whosoever, brethren have been Arahat-Buddhas through the long ages of the past, they were servitors just as devoted to those Blessed ones as Ananda has been to me. And whosoever brethren shall be the Arahat-Buddhas of the future, there shall be servitors as devoted to those Blessed ones as Ananda has been to me’.”
The Servitor of Buddha was Ananda. Muhammad (pbuh) also had a servitor by the name Anas (r.a.) who was the son of Malik. Anas (r.a…) was presented to the Prophet by his parents. Anas (r.a…) relates: “My mother said to him, ‘Oh Messenger of God, here is your little servant’.” Further Anas relates, “I served him from the time I was 8 years old and the Prophet called me his son and his little beloved”. Anas (r.a…) stayed by the Prophet in peace and in war, in safety as well as in danger till the end of his life.
i) Anas (r.a.), even though he was only 11 years old stayed beside the Prophet during the battle of Uhud where the Prophet’s life was in great danger.
ii) Even during the battle of Honain when the Prophet was surrounded by the enemies who were archers, Anas (r.a…) who was only 16 years old stood by the Prophet.
Anas (R) can surely be compared with Ananda who stood by Gautam Buddha when the mad elephant approached him.
4. Six Criteria for Identifying Buddha:
According to the Gospel of Buddha by Carus pg. 214:
“The Blessed one said, ‘There are two occasions on which a Tathagata’s appearance becomes clear and exceedingly bright. In the night Ananda, in which a Tathagata attains to the supreme and perfect insight, and in the night in which he passes finally away in that ultra passing which leaves nothing whatever of his earthly existence to remain.’ ”
According to Gautam Buddha, following are the six criteria for identifying a Buddha.
i) A Buddha attains supreme and perfect insight at night-time.
ii) On the occasion of his complete enlightenment he looks exceedingly bright
iii) A Buddha dies a natural death.
iv) He dies at night-time.
v) He looks exceedingly bright before his death.
vi) After his death a Buddha ceases to exist on earth.
i) Muhammad (pbuh) attained supreme insight and Prophethood at night-time.
According to Surah Dukhan:
“By the books that makes thing clear – We sent it down during a blessed night.”
[Al-Qur'an 44:2-3]
According to Surah Al-Qadar:
“We have indeed revealed this (message) in the night of power.”
[Al-Qur'an 97:1]
ii) Muhammad (pbuh) instantly felt his understanding illumined with celestial light.
iii) Muhammad (pbuh) died a natural death.
iv) According to Ayesha (r.a.), Muhammad (pbuh) expired at night-time. When he was dying there was no oil in the lamp and his wife Ayesha (r.a.) had to borrow oil for the lamp.
v) According to Anas (r.a.), Muhammad (pbuh) looked exceedingly bright in the night of his death.
vi) After the burial of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) he was never seen again in his bodily form on this earth.
5. Buddhas are only Preachers:
According to Dhammapada, Sacred Books of East volume 10 pg., 67:
“The Jathagatas (Buddhas) are only Preachers.”
The Qur’an says in Surah Ghashiya:
“Therefore do thou give admonition, for thou art one to admonish. Thou art not one to manage (men’s) affairs.” [Al-Qur'an 88:21-22]
6. Identification of Maitreya by Buddha:
According to Dhammapada, Mattaya Sutta, 151:
“The promised one will be:
i) Compassionate for the whole creation
ii) A messenger of peace, a peace-maker
iii) The most successful in the world.
The Maitreya as a Preacher of morals will be:
i) Truthful
ii) Self-respecting
iii) Gentle and noble
iv) Not proud
v) As a king to creatures
vi) An example to others in deeds and in words”.

Courier agency ARAMEX owes the public a noble duty because it was instrumental in policing and arresting her. With the millions of dollars at its disposal, will this agency make these two books available in the libraries worldwide?

Shame on every body involved and being Sri lankan too, she being a lone lady, a Muslim was deliberately kept for more than a month without any charges leveled at or being produced to court, while people who were arrested red handed for throwing stones and creating havoc were released next minute.
Good publicity was given to her book is a great reward for her patience. Quran 2;45 says “And seek assistance through patience and prayer, and most surely it is a hard thing except for the humble ones”.
also, in 2; 155 “Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere”.
I could draw a point that inter-faith dialog, debate and rebuttal are lacking in Sri Lanka, we do not have enough publications on other religious ideology. and our education systems too is not wide enough to include a thoughts on other religions, a few celebrations and cultures are loosely included in some text.
The whole scenario is based on mis understandings and mere fear, these have to be eliminated through a healthy dialog and debate for betterment of our mother land.
Interfaith dialogues are not allowed in Sri Lanka for obvious reasons. Buddhist organisations fear that will trigger exodus. They want to maximum keep Buddhists in the darkness so they will not know the similarities and differences.
Good idea then alll others will come out of darkness and convert to buddhism.

4. Who is Muhammad?
The last and final prophet that God sent to humanity was the Prophet Muhammad. Muhammad explained, interpreted and lived the teachings of Islaam. The Prophet Muhammad is the greatest of all prophets for many reasons, but mainly because the results of his mission have brought more people into the pure belief in One God than any other prophet. Even though other religious communities claimed to believe in One God, over time they had corrupted their beliefs by taking their prophets and saints as intercessors with Almighty God. Some religions believe their prophets to be manifestations of God, “God Incarnate” or the “Son of God”. All of these false ideas lead to the creature being worshipped instead of the Creator, which contributed to the idolatrous practice of believing that Almighty God can be approached through intermediaries. In order to guard against these falsehoods, the Prophet Muhammad always emphasised that he was only a human-being tasked with the preaching of God’s message. He taught Muslims to refer to him as “the Messenger of God and His Slave”. To Muslims, Muhammad is the supreme example for all people – he was the exemplary prophet, statesman, military leader, ruler, teacher, neighbour, husband, father and friend. Unlike other prophets and messengers, the Prophet Muhammad lived in the full light of history. Muslims don’t need to have “faith” that he existed and that his teachings are preserved – they know it to be a fact. Even when his followers only numbered a few dozen, Almighty God informed Muhammad that he had be sent as a mercy to all of mankind. Because people had distorted or forgotten God’s messages, God took it upon Himself to protect the message revealed to Muhammad. This was because Almighty God promised not to send another messenger after him. Since all of God’s messengers have preached the message of Islaam – i.e. submission to the will of God and the worship of God alone – Muhammad is actually the last prophet of Islaam, not the first.
5. What are the Teachings of Islaam?
The foundation of the Islaamic faith is belief in the Unity of God. This means to believe that there is only one Creator and Sustainer of everything in the Universe, and that nothing is divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Him. Truly believing in the Unity of God means much more than simply believing that there is “One God” – as opposed to two, three or four. There are a number of religions that claim belief in “One God” and believe that ultimately there is only one Creator and Sustainer of the Universe. Islaam, however, not only insists on this, but also rejects using such words as “Lord” and “Saviour” for anyone besides Almighty God. Islaam also rejects the use of all intermediaries between God and Man, and insists that people approach God directly and reserve all worship for Him alone. Muslims believe that Almighty God is Compassionate, Loving and Merciful.
The essence of falsehood is the claim that God cannot deal with and forgive His creatures directly. By over-emphasising the burden of sin, as well as claiming that God cannot forgive you directly, false religions seek to get people to despair of the Mercy of God. Once they are convinced that they cannot approach God directly, people can be mislead into turning to false gods for help. These “false gods” can take various forms, such as saints, angels, or someone who is believed to be the “Son of God” or “God Incarnate”. In almost all cases, people who worship, pray to or seek help from a false god don’t consider it to be, or call it, a “god”. They claim belief in One Supreme God, but claim that they pray to and worship others beside God only to get closer to Him. In Islaam, there is a clear distinction between the Creator and the created. There is no ambiguity in divinity – anything that is created is not deserving of worship and only the Creator is worthy of being worshipped. Some religions falsely believe that God has become part of His creation, and this has led people to believe that they can worship something created in order to reach their Creator.
Muslims believe that even though God is Unique and beyond comprehension – He has no “Son”, partners or associates. According to Muslim belief, Almighty God “does not beget nor was He begotten” – neither literally, allegorically, metaphorically, physically or metaphysically – He is Absolutely Unique and Eternal. He is in control of everything and is perfectly capable of bestowing His infinite Mercy and Forgiveness to whomever He chooses. That is why is called the All-Powerful and Most-Merciful. Almighty God has created the Universe for man, and as such wants the best for all human beings. Muslims see everything in the Universe as a sign of the Creatorship and Benevolence of Almighty God. Also, the belief in the Unity of God is not merely a metaphysical concept. It is a dynamic belief that effects ones view of humanity, society and all aspects of life. As a logical corollary to the Islaamic belief in the Oneness of God, is its belief in the oneness of mankind and humanity.
6. What is the Qur’aan?
It is the final revelation of the will of Almighty God’s to all of mankind, which was conveyed through the Angel Gabriel, in Arabic, to the Prophet Muhammad in its sounds, words and meanings. The Qur’aan, sometimes spelled Koran, was relayed to the Prophet’s companions, which they memorised verbatim, and which has been publicly and continually recited by them and their successors until the present day. In short, the Qur’aan is the book of guidance from God par excellence. The Qur’aan is still memorised and taught by millions of people. The language of the Qur’aan, Arabic, is still a living language to millions of people, so unlike the scriptures of other religions, the Qur’aan is still read in its original language by countless millions of people. The Qu’ran is a living miracle in the Arabic language; and is know to be inimitable in its style, form and spiritual impact. God’s final revelation to mankind, the Qur’aan, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of 23 years. The Qur’aan, in contrast to many other religious books, was always thought to be the Word of God by those who believed in it, i.e. it wasn’t something decreed by a religious council many years after being written. Also, the Qu’ran was recited publicly in front of both the Muslim and non-Muslim communities during the life of the Prophet Muhammad. The entire Qur’aan was also completely written down in lifetime of the Prophet, and numerous companions of the Prophet memorised the entire Qur’aan word-for-word as it was revealed. So unlike other scriptures, the Qur’aan was always in the hands of the common believers, it was always thought to be God’s word and, due to wide-spread memorisation, it was perfectly preserved. In regards to the teachings of the Qur’aan – it is a universal scripture, and it is addressed to all of mankind, and not to a particular tribe or “chosen people”. The message that it brings is nothing new, but the same message of all of the prophets – submit to Almighty God and worship Him alone. As such, God’s revelation in the Qur’aan focuses on teaching human beings the importance of believing in the Unity of God and framing their lives around the guidance which He has sent. Additionally, the Qur’aan contains the stories of the previous prophets, such as Abraham, Noah, Moses and Jesus; as well as many commands and prohibitions from God. In modern times in which so many people are caught up in doubt, spiritual despair and “political correctness”, the Qur’aanic teachings offer solutions to the emptiness of our lives and the turmoil that is gripping the world today.

7. How Do Muslims View the Nature of Man, the Purpose of Life and the Life Hereafter?
In the Holy Qur’aan, God teaches human beings that they were created in order to worship Him, and that the basis of all true worship is God-consciousness. Since the teachings of Islaamic encompass all aspects of life and ethics, God-consciousness is encouraged in all human affairs. Islaam makes it clear that all human acts are acts of worship if they are done for God alone and in accordance to His Divine Law. As such, worship in Islaam is not limited to religious rituals. The teachings of Islaam act as a mercy and a healing for the human soul, and such qualities as humility, sincerity, patience and charity are strongly encouraged. Additionally, Islaam condemns pride and self-righteousness, since Almighty God is the only judge of human righteousness. The Islaamic view of the nature of man is also realistic and well-balanced. Human beings are not believed to be inherently sinful, but are seen as equally capable of both good and evil. Islaam also teaches that faith and action go hand-in-hand. God has given people free-will, and the measure of one’s faith is one’s deeds and actions. However, human beings have also been created weak and regularly fall into sin. This is the nature of the human being as created by God in His Wisdom, and it is not inherently “corrupt” or in need of repair. 1. What is Islaam?
The word “Islaam” is an Arabic word that means “submitting and surrendering your will to Almighty God”. The word comes from the same root as the Arabic word “salam”, which means peace. 2. Who are Muslims?

3. Who is Allaah?

If one were to pick up an Arabic translation of the Bible, one would see the word “Allaah” being use where the word “God” is used in English. Actually, the Arabic word for Almighty God, “Allaah”, is quite similar to the word for God in other Semitic languages – for example, the Hebrew word for God is “Elah”. For various reasons, some non-Muslims mistakenly believe that Muslims worship a different God than the God of Moses and Abraham and Jesus. This is certainly not the case, since the Pure Monotheism of Islaam calls all people to the worship of the God of Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and all of the other prophets.

Muslims need to realise that is they insult and debase other religions, their own religion will meet the same fate.
Previously I would have protested against the above video but after reading the commens of bigoted Sri Lankan Muslims above and their justification of what happened in Kuwait I support it fully.
Firstly, to the best of my knowledge, what happened in Kuwait is not Religious, it is cultural. The Kuwaiti police / responsible authority has given permission but certain groups wanted it disrupted and Islam has nothing to do with this. The Kuwaiti police should take correct action on this unjust behavior ( I hope they are not like the Sri Lankan police bending down to politics etc)
My advise to anybody is not to go by comments of individuals, as all people are bound to make mistakes, in addition they too could be guided by some one of a different faith doing an injustice deed.
Comparing Almighty Allah’s message should not be taken as insult. Any body practicing Islam is not allowed to act or communicate in a way that will affect the dignity of another person but we can politely point out ( not forcefully) that this is the correct way. A Kuwaiti lawmaker has asked the interior minister to explain the disruption of the Sri Lankan New Year celebrations on Friday.
The daylong celebration organized by the Sri Lankan embassy at Jahra Stadium was cancelled hours before its scheduled end after angry Kuwaitis invaded the field and demanded that the participants, estimated at more than 10,000, leave the premises.
The Kuwaitis, members of a conservative religious group, said that the celebrations violated Islamic rules by allowing men and women to mix and by playing music. Negotiations between the organizers, the police and the protestors failed to end the deadlock and the Sri Lankan ambassador urged his compatriots to leave the stadium to avoid an escalation of the tense situation. The police later said that the organizers had the proper papers to hold the celebrations at the stadium.
I want to know who exactly ended the celebrations and whether the interior ministry had any role in the decision. I also want to know whether the organizers had the proper documents to go ahead with the celebrations and whether the interior ministry did anything to stop those who wanted to suspend them,” Aseel Al-Awadhi, one of the four women MPs in the Assembly, asked the interior minister.
Also yesterday, the Kuwaiti Human Rights Society issued a statement on the incident, strongly denouncing the suspension of the event. “Unfortunately, the celebration was suspended upon the request of an MP, which is unjustifiable and an indication that authorities are incapable of respecting decisions, including the green light given to the event through a license.” The statement, which was received by Kuwait Times, added that the Interior Ministry had repeatedly submitted to pressure applied by lawmakers’, specifically MPs who belong to a conservative religious bloc which stands against freedom and people’s jubilations.
Writing in Al-Qabas, columnist Ahmad Al-Baghli condemned the intervention of the Kuwaitis to end the celebrations, saying that the 10,000 Sri Lankans had the right and the official permission to celebrate. “How could the interior ministry accept the conditions and demands of the citizens, even though some of them were MPs? Why should an MP claim that the celebrations violated Islam? Shouldn’t someone make these books available to the public so that the public can decide it for themselves. The contention is that the police who took her into custody did not read the book before arresting.

Growing up in strict Christian background, he came across Islam by reading the Qur’an and later converted.

First of all it is ironic that ARAMEX which is essentially Arabic Express, and a muslim company should do this to Malini. Secondly, it is a very bad reflection on Aramex if they don’t take any action on this employee. Personally if I were a Muslim, I would boycott the whole service worldwide and teach them a lesson. Remember Arla? It was all about press freedom and such until they felt the pinch and then even apologized. Most middle eastern supermarkets wouldn’t even touch Daenish products with a bargepole still… and the americans kept quite and capitalized.

Whom ever followed Chritianity earlier Islam, there is no reason to follow Christianity after seeing Islam. As told in earlier as last Islam came up with full and final regulations for mankind.
Let me ask you some thing, is there any evidence for the other prophets except Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) who lived on earth? there are no any clue even. But Since Islam started there are all evidence of life style of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) even his beloved followers. If you visited Saudi, the Holly Cities of Makkah and Medina, there are proofs.
Moreover, earlier religions came was there any evidence of Scientifically proven? I bet it is just only in Noble Quran and no any other books. There still your time with you and just think before you sleep.
