You Animal!

You Animal!

It is in the absolutely unique setting of a huge warehouse down Tripoli Road in Maradana that Nadia Haji Omar held her very first painting exhibition in Sri Lanka titled: You Animal.

The 24 year old BFA holder from Bard College New York used mixed media, pens, crayons, acrylic, and ink to illustrate her interpretation of the different animal traits which can be found in human beings.

Nadia who has lived for 15 years in Sri Lanka before moving to the US is from her Syrian, Indian and Sri Lankan descent a melting pot of cultures which is visible in her pieces. The artist says that she has painted steadily since 2005, but the decision to hold this exhibition was quite sudden and most of the paintings were done between 2009 until a week ago!

Those who are used and prefer classic and conventional styles of painting may come out a little rattled from the show. Emotion pours out of each piece and it certainly isn’t “easy” art to understand. But at least it moves you, causes a reaction, isn’t that after all what art is about?

Would like to see more pictures of the paintings, the one on display is powerful yet tender. And the title of the exhibit is great!

I thought the title was talking about Prabhakaran.
