Show Us The Money!

By Frederica Jansz

At the Working Committee meeting of the UNP on Friday, May 21, Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe responding to a page one lead story in The Sunday Leader of  May 9, titled “Show Us The Money” had said, that “the money” had been given to this newspaper during the last presidential election of December 2009 – January 2010.

Ranjan Ramanayake MP, had quizzed the Opposition Leader requesting him to respond to charges of malpractices involving the non accountability of millions of rupees handed over to him during successive elections – referring in particular to The Sunday Leader and its recent exposés on Wickremesinghe and the UNP.

At which point, Wickremesinghe had said, “I gave The Sunday Leader Rs. 11 million during the last presidential election campaign as well as some monies to General Sarath Fonseka for his campaign.”

The fact of the matter is that our story on May 9th, focused on senior members within the United National Party demanding that Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe account for millions of rupees worth of funds handed directly to him. We challenge Wickremesinghe to respond to our story and produce accounts proving where and how he spent a sum of Rs. 300 – 400 million given to him at the last general election.

Party stalwarts in fact told this newspaper that as much as Rs. 600 million remains unaccounted for, following the last general election.  Monies, which they say were all handed over directly to Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Wickremesinghe, like most politically corrupt Sri Lankan politicians, is far from squeaky clean. Millions by way of campaign funds have been personally handed over to him – millions of rupees – and in one instance over one billion rupees by way of campaign funds remain unaccounted for. ‘Gentlemen’ like Wickremesinghe, cling to power-without-responsibility, thereby holding the country to ransom and allowing others to plunder and pillage. All he is interested in is maintaining his creature comforts and status as Leader of the Opposition. He has long been bankrupt as a politician because politics is about engagement with people on their own terms.

Prasanna unless I have been reading the different Sunday Leader as you were I am puzzled as to what you are trying to say. You have described ethics and journalism, but as far as I can remember it was the same journalistic method that was used for reporting about the UPFA and others even when Lasantha was alive. Bless him he is no longer living, but the difference is now the Leader forthrightly exposed some irregularities with in UNP and its leadership. For which you seem to have got the hump!!. So before giving others about get your facts right. All of you who criticise Frederika has a axe to grind ‘cos you want to see the whiter than white RW to be left alone. Well done Frederika. You may call me anything but I too know what journalism.

Free Media hurts the Media, hence censorship. Imagine how non media gets hurt by the media,

Now I understand what free media means! that what the media wants us to believe.

  10. Psycho

Wordsmithing anything any rubbish by the media is called free media, but not by anyone else.
