In an official visit to the USA, Minister of External Affairs Prof. G. L. Peiris has called on the Tamil community all over the world to get involved in the rehabilitation process in Sri Lanka. Peiris, who is scheduled to meet Secretary of State Hilary Clinton on Friday made this comment to the BBC at the UN Headquarters in New York.
“Well as far as the diaspora are concerned our hope very much is that they would involve themselves constructively in the efforts that are now being made to rebuild the North and East of the country,” the BBC reported quoting the Minister.
The minister added that the government has been active in assisting the displaced civilians and much can be done by the international community to help with this process. Prof. Peiris also stated that since the end of the war, the economy has improved and so has the quality of life.

In my opinion, if the government sincerely desires the Tamil diaspora to part with their funds and expertise they should take the following:
1. Stop holding the people as prisoners.
2. Withdraw most of the military camps, cease the construction of new camps and hand back all the properties of the Tamil people which are occupied by force including the three hotels.
3 Cease the errection of Buddhist temples around every nook and corner especially around bo trees.
4. Allow people with foreign passports to travel around the north without having to obtain clearence from the Ministry of Defence.
5. Stop the colonisation of Tamil areas with the Sinhalese and the families of the military.
6. Release all those being held illegallly in custody.
7. Provide unqualified support to the IDP’s both still in the camps and those who have left the camps.
8. Allow the NGO’s like the TRO to cater to the needs of the Tamil people.
If these steps are taken in the first instance, then the Tamils will be able to live with dignity, then the diaspora will gladly step in otherwise this will be another wet dream. a j.
