City Hotels To Star In IIFA

By Ranee Mohamed

Hotels in the city of Colombo are making extensive preparations for the forthcoming International Indian Film Academy Awards 2010 (IIFA awards) to be held in Colombo from June 3 – 5.
Indian mega stars such as Shahrukh, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Bipasha Basu, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, Lara Dutta, Bonam Irani  and Ritesh Deshmukh are but a few of the celebrities expected in Sri Lanka during this time.

The city hotels have taken an additional step to release several members of staff to work on a voluntary basis to assist in the vast and varied arrangements.

“IIFA was planned in a short time and the City Hotels will provide 650 room nights per day including 148 suites on complementary basis.

The rooms will be on a bed and breakfast basis and the suites will be on a full board basis with extras,” said M. Shanthikumar, President of  Colombo City Tourist Hotels Association (CCTHA).

“There is no doubt that this mega event will be a great boost to the tourist industry and the contribution of 2,600 room nights is a worthwhile investment, which will not only benefit the hotels in particular but the tourist industry in general,” analysed Shanthikumar. He went on to say that this exercise of goodwill will create an awareness and boost the image of our country.

“India has become one of the largest tourism markets in recent times and this prestigious event will definitely help to enhance future arrivals. With its vast potential Sri Lanka would benefit immensely, with significant effects being evident with immediate effect,” said Shanthikumar.  “With the business sectors in India having one to one meetings with Sri Lankan outfits, the positive effects will also be reflected in the corporate sector,” he observed.

        • What Indigenousness you are talking about. Chief of your so-called indigenous people is LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran. He is the man that sends herds of women with bombs in their bosoms to kill for you lot to have an Eelam. Read here to find out where Velupillai’s grandfather comes from. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics/nation/Prabhakarans-cousin-sister-in-Kerala-deeply-distressed/articleshow/4548024.cms

Now if Velupillai Prabhakaran is a recent immigrant (kallathoni) from India, one need not go further to visualize from where the rest of the stand bearing indigenous people come from.

Friday, 8 May 2009 POONTHALATHAZHAM (KOLLAM): A lady in Kerala has claimed that LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, who is spearheading the fight for a separate Tamil eelam in Sri Lanka, is her first cousin and that he has Malayali roots.

Earlier this month, the Economic Times of India interviewed a 77-year-old woman, Janaki Amma, in her lower middle class residence about 20 km from Kollam in the southern Indian state of Kerala, who claimed Prabhakaran, son of her maternal uncle, Vellupillai, is a Malayali.

“Velupillai was one of five brothers and two sisters, one of who was my mother Nani Amma”, she says. That makes her the first cousin of Prabhakaran, who she has never met.

“My uncle Velupillai last came to Kollam for my grandfather’s funeral when I was a 12-year-old,” she told the paper. “Since then, I have not seen him. He used to regularly send money to my mother, but after my mother’s demise that stopped. It used to be Rs. 50 per month, but that was a princely amount those days”, reminisces Janaki Amma.

She showed the paper a post card that her uncle had sent from Jaffna. Sent on 18.12.1953, the address read: R Velupillai, Vale Beeda Store, 224, KKS Road, Jaffna.

“After settling in Jaffna, my uncle’s children would obviously have studied in Tamil medium and been brought up in that culture, quite naturally,” Amma said, trying to explain how Prabhakaran might have taken to the Lanka Tamil separatist cause and passed off as a Tamil. – With Agencies

May is the another Black July for Eelam Tamils

Tamils throughout the world, remember the victims of Black July ’83. Twenty-six years ago, the state-sponsored pogrom against Tamils in Sri Lanka resulted in the deaths of 3000 people, and property damages of over $300 million U.S. The days between July 24 and July 30, 1983, were tragic, and unforgettable, for the Tamils. The May 2009 war, which killed nearly 40,000 Tamil civilians, was record high, beating the July ‘83 holocaust. For the Sri Lankan government, it is victory, but for Tamils, it is the month to reflect and remember. Now May is, to Tamils, like February is to Black people around the world. Tamils the world over observe this occasion with rallies, vigils, and prayers.

Tamils around the world have been organizing peaceful rallies, and other events, to reflect and remember the massacred Tamils. The Tamils were killed by the Sri Lankan armed forces, with no mercy whatsoever, even when they were given promise that they would not be killed if they sought refuge in the designated zone which was recognized as ‘safety zone’.

Within five months, Tamils were killed day and night, up until May 19th, of 2009. After the Sri Lankan president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, came to power in 2005, he said he would crush the LTTE, and pledged that he would set out the ‘Mahinda Chinthana,’ which would outline how his government would rule the country. After he came to power, he became wild, and ordered his armed forces to eliminate the LTTE in the eastern part of the island.

East remains dangerous for people to live

Mahinda’s armed forces went on a rampage in the East in 2006 with the guise of fighting the LTTE in order to gain full control of the sluice gates of the reservoir in Mavilaru. The use of ‘Operation Watershed’ to gain the control of the sluice gates of the reservoir, was successful, after the LTTE fighters denounced the war saying that they lifted the ban for access to the reservoir.

The Mahinda administration even annulled the cease fire agreement signed by the former Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, and the LTTE leader, V. Pirapaharan, which came into effect in 2002. The Sri Lankan armed forces even took the lives of employees of INGOs (International Non-Governmental Organizations), as well as local employees of NGOs, academics, businessmen, journalists, etc.

The government took decisive action against the foreign agencies, which were working in the Tamil areas, and ordered them to vacate. The government opened up a confrontation with the aid of agencies and media outlets. But, the LTTE leadership kept saying that they were sticking to the 2002 ceasefire agreement. They even announced that the Sri Lankan government was the one which unilaterally breached the agreement, but the LTTE was respecting it.

The LTTE even took control of Sampur, in the Trincomalee district, but after mounting pressure from the international community, the LTTE had to return to their original barracks, after bringing the areas under their full control. When the Sri Lankan armed forces were launching massive military operations, the LTTE was maintaining silence and retreating from the Sri Lankan armed forces. The Tamils around the world were hoping that the LTTE leadership was tactically withdrawing for a day to come. But, the eastern military operation, instigated by the Sri Lankan armed forces, drove over 300,000 people to seek refuge. Many of them are still alive, under pathetic conditions, even after the government announced that they brought the eastern province from the LTTE. Nearly four years have passed after capturing the East, but the economic, and security, situation remain a grave concern. Unidentified men, as usual, kidnap people and they are taken to secret locations. Women are still facing difficulties, but the reports of these abuses have been kept silent.

The eastern province has been given control of the pro-government paramilitary, the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP). The Sinhala colonization is on the rise in the aftermath of the so-called liberation of the East from the LTTE. This has predominantly taken place after chasing the inhabitants off the land, to refugee camps, making them displaced people who wander around without the right to own their own lands. Another event that is taking place is that the government is sponsoring to build Buddhist temples in the liberated areas. Other than that, there are no prospects for the people who inhabited the land.
Eastern victory led to Northern military overtures

Upon completion of the so-called liberation of the Eastern military operation, the Mahinda administration immediately turned their guns toward capturing the North, especially the Vanni, which was the headquarters of the LTTE. There, the LTTE was having a de facto government with police, the judicial system, custom offices, etc., similar to a parallel government, resembling the way Colombo was ruling the rest of the island.

Tamils were hoping that the Vanni would be the graveyard for the advancing Sinhala armed forces. But, the LTTE was still maintaining the policy of retreating, except against defensive attacks. The LTTE never launched offensive attacks, even though they did have the military prowess to launch such military offences against the advanced armed forces. This shocked the Tamils. One by one, the Sri Lankan armed forces captured the areas of Vanni.

Within the five months of military offensives, especially from January 2009, the Sri Lankan armed forces gained control of over 10,000 square kilometres of landmass of the North. Over 350,000 Tamils, who were the residents in the control of the LTTE, had no choice but to go with the flow. They were butchered like animals being hunted for meat, despite the continuous call from the international community, to put a halt to the fighting, in order to secure the release of the civilians.

The Sri Lankan government even offered to declare a ‘safe zone’ and asked the people to move in to the region, but, the government did not respect it, saying that they had to launch shelling and aerial bombardment, since the LTTE fighters, too, sought refuge in the area, in the cover of civilians. Upon considering the massive sufferings of civilians, the LTTE leadership formally announced that they silenced their guns to safeguard the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

Even after the LTTE silenced their guns, the Sri Lankan armed forces crushed to death thousands of Tamils, as well as LTTE fighters, who meant to surrender to the Sri Lankan armed forces with white flags. Even the LTTE’s senior political leaders were shot to death at gunpoint, after they were given promise that they could surrender with a white flag. The military operation came to a complete stop by May 19, 2009. On this day, the Sri Lankan armed forces announced that they found the dead body of the LTTE leader, Pirapaharan from the Nanthikadal lagoon in Mullaitheevu. With the end of this military operation, the Mahinda administration announced a great victory and said they defeated the LTTE, which was a calling on a military outfit in the island with conventional military power with naval, air, and land forces, as well as the ferocious ‘Black Tigers’ who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Tamil Eelam by detonating bombs in their bodies.

Victory for Sinhalese and Grief for the Tamils

In the final phase of Eelam War IV, the Sri Lankan government announced victory, but the war wounded the Tamils, leaving 40,000 of their beloved ones dead. Mahinda won both presidential and parliamentary elections for the second consecutive term. The Mahinda administration, so far, has not offered a political solution to the Tamils’ grievances. Rather, the government is making anti-Tamil activates, such as deploying Sinhala families, to occupy the residents and properties belonging to the Tamils, in the North, as how they do it in the East. They are building Buddhist shrines, establishing military camps, and deploying more troops in the Tamil areas. All these are taking place in the time the government is celebrating the victory over the LTTE.

As their future becomes futile, Tamils feel that they are insecure in their traditional homeland. Anti-Tamil cultural events are on the rise in the Tamil homeland. Young people have been given drugs in order to ruin their future, and many other anti-social events have taken place with the support of the Sri Lankan armed forces. The Tamil paramilitaries, which are supporting the government, help these anti-social activities. Kidnappings, raping, and killings are back to normal in the Tamil areas. In the recent past that was common during the war time. This is the ground reality, in the Tamil areas, and Tamils are still facing a security threat in Colombo and other Sinhala areas.

During this grave environment, the Mahinda administration is planning widespread celebrations to mark the first anniversary of the end of the Eelam War IV. The government announced a week of celebrations to honour soldiers, starting May 12, including a victory parade in Colombo, the capital, on May 20. The government said that, during war heroes’ week, the army also planned to hold religious ceremonies and raise funds to help disabled soldiers.

In the meantime, Tamils, who fell victims to the State-sponsored terrorism, have already started peaceful rallies and prayers to reflect and remember the people who died. Tamils around the world, have started rallies and other forms of gatherings from May 1st. Many Tamil organizations are announcing and holding week-long rallies, vigils, and prayers for the dead people, and they will continue until May 19th.

Tamils who live around the world, including Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, France, India, Norway and the U.S., are wearing black clothes to mourn the people killed by the Sri Lankan army, as a remembrance. They are also seen wearing red ribbons to symbolize the innocent blood spilled in the war crimes against Tamil people. The protesting Tamils urge that the international community should not maintain silence. As the first anniversary of the war comes to an end, Tamils around the world are united in their grief for those innocents who became victims of war crimes, and they urge the international community not to forget the war crimes committed by Sri Lanka, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Tamil National Alliance, which is the largest Tamil political party, urged the Tamil people to mourn and hold silent prayers, on May 17, to mark what it called a day of “catastrophe.” The TNA said: “During the height of the war several thousand Tamil people were killed and hundreds of thousand others suffered heavy losses and were forced to flee their homes…This catastrophe is one of the worst in world history.”

Tamils were describing the July ‘83 holocaust as the worst they had seen in their history, but the Tamils came up with no words to describe the war of 2009, and tens of thousands of people were butchered all alone in the month of May, 2009, which broke the previous record catastrophe of July’83. Sri Lanka is celebrating the death of Tamils, with a large Sinhala crowd, as a military victory, but for Tamils it is the month to reflect and remember. This is the month for them to unite and foster their support in obtaining their freedom. It is the time to make a vow to put pressure upon the international community to investigate the genocide of the war, conducted by Sri Lanka, and to punish the perpetrators, in the same way Slobodan Milosevic was punished by the International Court of Justice.

THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SHOULD NOT ALLOW WAR CRIMMINALS LIKE MAHINDA RAJAPAKSE, GOTHABAYA RAJAPAKSE AND GENERAL SARATH FONSEKA SCOT FREE AFTER KILLING MORE THAN 40,000 INNOCENT TAMIL CIVILIANS DURING THE FINAL DAYS OF THE WAR.

But like all the inquiries you have ordered in the past, nothing will come of this one, too. For truth be told, we both know who will be behind my death, but dare not call his name…”

What a nice gesture. Patriotic sri lankans are looking forward to this event – to showcase our beautiful country – a land like no other.. All you terrorists symphathisers, peelam dreamers wake up.. We will never let Sri lanka be divided.. • lankathuweeba

..If the Singhalese claim that they fought Tamil terrorism for thirty years, then the Tamil people resisted the terrorism of the Sri Lankan State for fifty years or more. To deny this will be to make caricature of history. The revelation of war crimes made by Fonseka have been denied and such denial endorsed by the Sinhala polity branding it as an unpatriotic act of treachery against the Sinhalese people and the Sri Lankan State as if war crimes and crimes against humanity as long as they are committed against the Tamils are not to be deemed a crime. This portrays the signs of moral decay and the future degradation of the Sri Lankan society, the majority of whom cannot look at themselves as they really are in their own eyes and face the truth thus reflecting the quality of their own leadership. The question is whether the Tamil nation should remain part of such a society which is in imminent decay. i hope that you ate in a possition to undetstand what i have wtitten to you …

We borned , educated Sri lankana live in a finnest countries in the world , and enjoy the luxury , because those countries are not narrow minded like Sri Lanka.

Tell me guys , except for one or two countries , any SL needs a visa , because they know about – which is self explanatory.

We also enjoy having all the previlages , respected when we carry our passports to a foreign country – our passports are visa free.

    Sri Lanka paasports – ………………………………………………….?!

    • Lions Rule

Raj.. all Sri lankans are proud to have a country of their own.. The reason Sri Lankans need visas is because of all the fake refugees that have created a big strain in foreign countries (economically and socially).. thats why all sri lankans have been impacted. In the past Sri lankans never required Visas… But we dont care.. we are proud to have our own undivided country that we will never let any one divide.

The anniversary of the mulliativu massacre in whic over 40,000 defenceless innocent Tamil people were killed by the S/L state. The souls of these people will not rest until they receive justice. The complete wash out of the “victory” celebrations and the death by lightening, of the soldiers who were involved in preparing for this obscenity is the manifestation of the wrath of the lingering souls.

Unfortunately you can’t herd these souls into “no fire zones and “kill” them by MBRLs or aerial bombardment. Only way you will make them leave this island alone is when they receive justice.

    Raj,

Although you got your passport changed, you are clearly lacking in your knowledge of English. I suggest that you take some classes before making a fool of yourself on these pages. By your writting I assume you are a Tamil who went overseas on the refugee ticket. There are so many of you all over the world and the although you say that you get respect for your new passport, people who travel know the truth. You are just a second class citizen in someone else’s country and for us it doesnt matter if we need to get a visa to go anywhere because we can get that visa if needed. but we can hold our head up high in our own country where we are first class citizens unlike you. I have said this before and I will say it again, I am happy that people like you have vacated our Island and I urge more of the like minded idiots to do so. Then we will have our country to ourselves the way it was meant to be. Of course if we need more help for tea estates, we will surely call you.

I can’t imagine anyone paying you that much as you Engligh skills are extremely poor. Maybe you are doing 2 to 3 jobs to maintain your mansion. As for the tea estates you claim you have, it is really no surprise as that was the reason the British brought you to SL. It is good to know that you are carrying on in your family tradition. Most probably the estaes you own now were planted by your father and grandfather. So keep up the good work mate.

Amitab Bachchan attended and led all the IIFA in the past. But not it’s a doubt whether he is coming to Colombo for this event. If he didn’t come it’s a very big shame for this country. And the only reason for not participating in the event is “Not to hurt the feelings of Tamils”

The message is clear. “Not to go to the country where Tamils were massacred in large numbers”.

  13. Truth

Bollywod badshah, Shah Rukh Khan, has decide to skip the IIFA awards this year.

“I don’t think I will be able to come for IIFA…too much work here, will miss Colombo,” SRK tweeted.

SRK was supposed to be the star attraction at this year’s IIFA awards in Colombo from June 3-5, apart from this, SRK was also supposed to captain the Bollywood team in a friendly cricket match against the Sri Lankan team.

Sabbas Joseph of Wizcraft, the show’s organisers, said,

“Stars have their commitments. Hrithik Roshan will now be the captain. Even Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and hubby Abhishek announced that they won’t be attending the gala”.

Amitabh Bachchan will only make a fleeting appearance

  14. Truth

From the very beginning, south Indian film associations were against the selection of Colombo as the venue of the IIFA awards (the International Indian Film Awards), to be held later this week. Now, the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) has come up with the decision that they will boycott Bollywood films, if any of their stars or technicians attend the Colombo fest. Salman Khan is a brand ambassador of the show.

Their films will not be shown in theatres in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, said C.Kalyan, president of SIFCC. He said the decision was unanimous as they had been raising the issue of human rights violations in Sri Lanka for quite some time.

The south Indian film industry has been opposing the awards show vehemently, with little success. But Mani Ratnam, who reportedly had plans to premiere his ‘Raavanan’ there, had backed out. Last week, Amitabh Bachchan and his family had also pulled out of the show, citing some different reasons.

  15. Yoosuff

I am no supporter of the government of Sri Lanka but, I am happy that the LTTE is eliminated.I want Sri Lanka to be a place where all Sri Lankans could live as brothers and sisters.

I have a very sipmle question to people who cry genocide and human rights. We all agree that the basic rights of any person should not be violated.

The LTTE, on the orders of Pranakaran, massacred thousands of Tamil girls and boys who belonged to other Tamil movements , because they could not tolerate rivals. He killed all Tamil academics, top civi servants, intellectuals lawyers and moderate leaders.

He ordered masscre of Muslims in their Mosques (Kattankudy) , Buddhists in their temples (Anuradhapurs and Dalada).

These are facts the whole world knows.Where were all the champions of human rights , when these happened.

I am not talking about the killing of mebers of the police or the armed forces. This is about brutal killing of innocent human beings.Where were all these heroes who now cry genocide and human rights. How is this different.?

Whoever you are , provide an answer from your heart. Why did’n you condemn these brutal killings by the lTTE at that time?

.How is it diiferent from your so called “Genocide” (I do not belive in any genocide but, of course there could have been unavoidable civilian casualties as a result of the war.).

    • Kartik

      yoosuff…

One year after the end of the Sri Lankan civil war, one of the Indian doctors who treated Tamil refugees during the last months of the conflict says there were “massive casualties” among the civilian population.
The Sri Lankan government has denied any targeted killing of civilians and contested figures by the United Nations that 7,000 civilians died in the final phase of the conflict.
“We were not prepared (for what we saw) when we reached the camp… the extent of injuries… long lines of people,” the doctor told HT over phone from India, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“We were overwhelmed by what we saw. It was clear the people (the internally displaced) had been battered.” This is probably the only eyewitness account from the battle zone.
“We were treating hundreds of patients every day. Shell injuries, bullet injuries. More than 80 per cent of these patients said either someone in their family or in a family they knew was killed or injured. Nearly 80 to 90 of the 120-odd patients had a story of death or injury to recollect,” the doctor said.

nding weeks of speculation, Bollywood superstar and IIFA Brand Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan said he will not attend the IIFA events in Colombo, India’s NDTV reported.

Bachchan had been targeted by Tamil groups who staged protests outside his residence in Mumbai last month and asked the actor to stay away from IIFA in Colombo.

Later last month Bachchan wrote in his blog that he would respect everyone’s sentiments.

IIFA 2010, meant to showcase Sri Lanka’s emergence from 30 years of civil strife, is fast turning into a bone of contention with some groups in South India expressing their displeasure over the choice of the venue.

The event has already drawn the ire of the Tamil film fraternity, with popular figures like Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Vijay, Ajith and Surya refusing to be associated in any way with IIFA.

A number of stars have already expressed their inability to attend or are keeping their plans under wraps. Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun Rampal are giving IIFA a miss citing prior work commitments. Hrithik now replaces SRK as captain of the Bollywood team that will play a charity cricket match involving Indian and Sri Lankan movie and cricket stars.

According to reports, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan are also busy with other assignments and will skip IIFA this year.

South Indian Forum says, North India is openly declared that South India is different from North India.

North India has a strong mindset as Singheelam has to destroy the Indigneous People completely. But Majority of the Singheela People has Indigenous Skin. North Indians has Arabic Skin.

But Indigenous People are very well protected by the Nature. The Nature warned Singheelam about the Vanni Massacre by lightening message.
