Manilal Fernando, the king pin of Sri Lanka football, will lead the Sri Lankan delegation to the FIFA Congress which will take place in South Africa commencing June 6, and will be one of the key officials in the World Cup tournament that kicks off soon after.
The whole world plays football. The Federation Interntionale de Football Association, better known as FIFA, is the world’s governing body for this most popular sport — with approximately 300 million active players. FIFA is made up of 208 national member associations, more than any other international organisation. All these 208 member associations with three delegates each will attend the FIFA Congress on the 6th. FIFA was founded on May 21, 1904 by delegates from Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain. FIFA owes its French name to the fact that the foundation meeting was held in Paris.
At the home of FIFA in Zurich, Louis Vuitton and FIFA announced their collaboration on a new travel case for the World Cup. FIFA placed a special order with Louis Vuitton for the Trophy case and Hublot has become the official time keeper for the next two World Cups. The ‘Win in Africa with Africa’ programme aims to use football as a development tool and draw attention to Africa. South Africa has had a long love affair with the beautiful game, dating back to the early 19th century, and is embodied at all levels of the sport.
Despite the diversity of culture and numerous languages, the nation is fanatical about sport, most notably rugby, cricket, golf, swimming, athletics, and, of course, football. Football is sometimes called soccer and colloquially referred to as ‘diski’.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup has been a catalyst for infrastructural upgrades and the South African government is investing more nine billion South African Rand for further works to ensure that the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be an unforgettable, massive football festival for all South Africans and the football lovers of all parts of the world.
