Go Green Project To Make Sri Lanka Self Sufficient In Ginger

Go Green Ltd., an agro-forestry management company has planned to set up ayurvedic herb and forestry plantations in Sri Lanka after considering the growing demand for natural remedies to cure many ailments and also for healthy living.

Sri Lanka has ideal conditions for growing many herbs, but at present, more than 60% of local consumption of ayurvedic herbs are imported to the country and as a result, a huge sum of foreign exchange is drained out. Go Green Ltd. initially plans to fill this local supply gap and meet world demand subsequently.

Go Green has planned to initially plant ginger (Zingiber officinale) in 100 acres to make Sri Lanka self-sufficient in ginger by 2011. Ginger has a long history of both culinary and medicinal use world over because of its characteristics: odour, flavour and chemical components.

Go Green’s aim is to make Sri Lanka self-sufficient in ginger and subsequently be a major exporting country while generating substantial employment opportunities and contributing to the national economy. This commercial project of the company will be managed by qualified agronomists with advice from the Export Agriculture Department and Ayurvedic Research Institute.
