UN protesters attacked unarmed police – Jayasekara

UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara accused protesters led by NFF MP Wimal Weerawansa of attacking unarmed police outside the UN office on Tuesday.

“We saw a DIG assaulted. Not a single police officer had batons or tear gas. All the police officers were unarmed,” Jayasekara said. Jayasekara made the accusation during proceedings in Parliament today (7). UNP MP Jayalath Jayawardena also referred to the incident, saying the protest had “disrupted the image of the country.”

On Tuesday, protesters led by Weerawansa surrounded the UN office in Colombo. The group was protesting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s appointment of a 3 member advisory panel into alleged human rights violations by Sri Lanka. The UN office was forced to temporarily shut down as a result. Police attempted to evacuate UN workers trapped inside, and a clash resulted. At least one person was hospitalised, according to Jayasekara.
