TRC Sets A Floor Price For Mobile Calls

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) has set minimum prices for mobile phone calls in a bid to minimize losses amounting to billions of rupees incurred by the industry.

TRC Chief Anusha Pelpita has said that the Commission has set a floor price of Rs. 2 for outgoing calls for all mobile phone networks from today (15).

The lowest tariff at present is 25 cents per minute and had resulted in the industry losing billions of rupees.

“Last year, the mobile industry lost Rs. 23 billion,” Pelpita has said, adding that it was the first loss for the cellular industry since mobile phones were introduced in 1989.

“Excessive price wars between operators are partly to blame for this mess. We are putting in floor prices at the request of operators to minimize the losses,” he has said.

According to Pelpita, the losses in the mobile phone industry have made it difficult to invest in new technologies for network expansion and broadband services.

Government open up this industry for new comers and now setting floor price. This is a real joke. Sri Lanka doesn’t need this many mobile operates and TRC failed to regulate construction of mobile towers which is very costly for mobile operators. TRC shouldn’t let each operators to construct towers in areas where already there are towers owned by other operators. We didn’t have a genuine reason for the latest entry (Airtel). TRC & politicians get kickbacks for issuing new mobile licences and I heard president’s family has stake in Airtel. These types of conspiracy and malpractices should be exposed by media

This is what happens with political appointees. Does this guy think he is running a co-operative wholesale establishment ?

Has this happened anywhere else in the world ?

They are slowly but surely destroying the economy of this country.

In other countries the Telecom Regulators try and bring down telecommunication costs through encouraging competition. The only warped country is once again Sri Lanka run by despot MR and his vile clan who insist on increasing the cost of telecommunication and thereby raising the cost of living, denying communication to the masses and relegating Sri Lanka yet further into the abyss that MR has taken. 175, 00 jobs already lost owing to loss of GSP+, now rising telecommunication costs and taxes. Next What??? If he comes another terms all people will have to go to Afghanistan as refugees.
