Fractured Discipline?

St. Joseph's College and Josephian Under 13 and Under 15 captain Dinal (with bat) on the cricketing field, published in another newspaper

It was a carnival spirit that reigned on Sunday, July 18. God fearing parents, the Fonsekas, held their eight children close as they basked in the happiness around them.
Turning a Nelsonian eye to the liquor stall,  this past pupil, whose son Dinal is a fourth generation Josephian, felt joyous in the celebrations of their alma mater. Fonseka’s mother in law, who accompanied them, enjoyed the mini carnival which took place after the walk which was held that afternoon.

The Fonsekas had much to celebrate in their personal lives for their eldest son had brought home 20 sports medals and approximately 60 certificates. A national junior athlete, Dinal had been the captain of the U-13 and U-15 cricket teams at school. Dinal Fonseka had broken the school record after 35 years, by winning the Junior  National Championship for high jump.

But life is strange and it does not take a minute for  dreams to become nightmares and for laughter to break away and make way for tears.

Carnivals are not places where blood is usually let. But on this day in July, they watched the blood splatter off the face of their oldest child Dinal (17) who was their greatest hope – the apple of their eye.

“It was the most horrible happening in our lives,” said the parents, whose five sons attended St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 10. “It was about 9.45 p.m. and we were about to leave, when a person who was following my eldest son for quite some time began to assault him. At first it looked like he was hitting my son on the face, but later we saw that he had a stone clasped in his hand and that my son was being hit on the side of his face with this stone,” said these parents in tears.

“Our son is strong spirited and he did not want to fall down and give into agony. Though we heard him shouting in pain, we were surprised to see  him run behind his assailant, overtake him and catch him. The original fight began at the entrance to the basket ball court and there was a large crowd in these well lit areas,” they said.

Though young Dinal had expected to catch his assailant and question him about the reason for the assault, his intentions were soon put to rest. “It was a shocking string of events that occurred. My son who caught his assailant, was held by two other students of St. Joseph’s College – his hands and upper part of the body held tight while the assailant had a field day in continuing his assault on our son. I wanted to do something but we were transfixed,” said the parents who went on to allege that one of the boys who held Dinal was the son of a teacher. “And all this while the security personnel hardly moved. The Father Rector was nowhere to be seen or found and I wanted him contacted. But a priest who had joined the college a few months ago dialed Father Gihan,” they said.

In a letter written to a high ecclesiastic, Dinal Fonseka’s father says, “Father Gihan to whose notice the incident was brought, dismissed it by saying in Sinhala ‘This chap has not cut his hair and must be an old Josephian’. When my mother in law protested, he simply said in Sinhala ‘Bambuwa cricket, kata wahagannawa’.”The letter alleges that a person in civil clothes, believed to be a highly placed police officer, had consoled the school authority. “Don’t worry father, let these people go to any cop station, I will shape it up”. Despite the threat of a ‘shaping it up’ hanging in the air, Dinal Fonseka, with the guidance and approval of his parents, lodged police entries citing the assault (214/303 –CIB 11 of 18/7/2010; 379/280 – CIB 1 of 19/7/2010; 258/342 – CIB 11 of 20/7/2010).

The parents of Dinal Fonseka have tolerated much. In December 2007, Dinal Fonseka was  reportedly called to the Women and Children’s Bureau  for an inquiry on a complaint made by another concerned party. At this inquiry, traumatic facts that Dinal Fonseka had chosen to keep to himself came to light of how he had been blindfolded with a wet towel, stripped etc. and  assaulted with cricket boots and bed poles and fists for resisting the demands of a gang of students which bordered on sadism.

“All this was tolerated in silence by our son. He kept it all to himself because of the passionate love he had for the game and the desire to represent the College. This incident occured at the upstairs of the Premadasa Pavillion in broad daylight while the coach was present downstairs,” the parents allege.

But the love for cricket can make a young man endure many an agony. A report from the Institute of Legal Medicine and Toxicology (MLEF No. 186/10) dated July 18 states  “…He is now having difficulty in opening mouth. Fracture.” “I did so much for my school. I not only played to the best of my ability, but showed the ways to others in the team,” says Dinal. “It was all for my school, my life was about my school,” he said.

Injured and traumatised there still remains a shade of that sporting spirit in young Dinal. His eyes red-rimmed, his heart broken and his throat choking, Dinal’s nagging question is “Why?”

An isolated incident — Rector/Principal

This is an isolated incident which cannot be identified with the school, said  Rector/Principal of St. Joseph’s College Rev. Father Sylvester Ranasinghe when The Sunday Leader contacted the school to get their side of the story.

“This incident occured after the carnival, at about 10.30 in the night. It was an unknown person who was involved. This has nothing to do with the school. We always maintain strict discipline at St. Joseph’s College and have a strict Catholic environment where education takes place,” said Rev. Father Sylvester Ranasinghe.

“This incident has nothing to do with the discipline of the college. This kind of thing happens among boys. It is a minor incident,” said the Rector.

When we contacted Father Gihan for his side of the story he said that  there was an incident and that they could not find the person who was involved in it.

“There are several accusations. It is only natural that parents stand up for their children. We have to seek the truth and ensure that justice is meted out to all,” said Father Gihan who went on to say that the school authorities have always worked towards safeguarding its good name.

“Dinal was surprised” – Onlooker

An onlooker when contacted by The Sunday Leader  said that young Dinal was looking at his younger brother who was talking to another child when a strange young man came and asked “Ko Dinal?” (Where is Dinal?) When someone had pointed Dinal out to him he had immediately lunged at the surprised Dinal and begun to attack him. “Dinal began to stagger behind the assailant and his parents ran behind him. He was assaulted again and then someone who was supposed to be a ‘committee member’ shouted “Open the Gate” and out went the assailant. The gate was shut, never to be opened again. “This is horrifying. I see a breakdown in discipline. About six or seven months ago a student brought some thugs to assault some school prefects. One prefect was in the ICU. The student who allegedly initiated it did not suffer consequences as serious.

      • Raj

This guy get beaten up and you want to kick his butt. And you don’t have the courage to say his name. But like Sri Lankan you don’t sympathize with the victims but support the perpetrators. Even being Josephians we have to look at the truth even if its hurts us.

    • sulakshana

YA and St.Joseph’s is ashamed of you..

  2. yohan

How cheap is it to make such comments and to publish such idiotic nonsense, almost evrybody who was there witnessed what happened and what truth is. The rich so called person and his dearly sons( what a boasting article) surely God may forgive this people. The Priests did the right thing and the best thing, ashamed of the so Called patriotic josephian who paid for this article and published it on the newspaper thretening the reporter, MAY GOD BLESS THEM AND FORGIVE THEM, and let his abundant love punish them.

  3. gihan silva

yeah evrybody witnessed what the truth is and know how the priests of the college managed the situation well. the whole school knows about this person and how he paid money and did the so called situation. hahahaha!!!!! cheap work brother very cheap we are ashamed of such cricketers and suck parents hahahahahaaa yeah as the above comment says let God punish them out of love, and we will continually pray for it for sure. God bless and may the powerful and miraculous intercession of St. Joseph be with all the priests and the college, let the great saint show his powers before the Lord showing how he cares for the college!!!!! God bless

  4. Student

i askd sm1who knw the story n this is what he said.
“saw the actual one.fr is spkin to lawyers abt it now.some outsiders came n hit him.he is knwn to hav fights with every 1.n when his mom complained to fr gihan.he had scolded her cz dinal was with long hair n all
father had said how can we be responsible.look at him.
he isnt a student of out skl
he only was till OLs.then failed nah.so he’s not a student.
n he was dressed lyk this wierd person lu.
    hair n earings n all
so father gihan had solded him n the mother both
    n anyways
skl cant be responsible if outsiders come n hit him nah
    nobody else was involved
    as in no other student

the paper article makes its sound lyk he is almost dying in hospital now
    but it wasnt that bad.
it was just one or two shots
    he wasnt bleeding or anything
i saw him ystrday also.hes fine”

  5. studen

Yes Dinal is doing fine, the situation is not the same as the newspaper pops up the bugger is doing great at home, this is all blasphemy, we badly deny this article and we dont accept it.

  6. allthatnow

Yeah, always side with the victim — that would make for a more sensational story, right?

The people who go to the school know exactly what kind of person Dinal Fonseka is. There have been a hundred times when you see the so-called Captain fighting with the rest of the cricket team during warm-up sessions, for all the opposing team members and match referees to see. It is ostensible that people with such poor strength of character attract all sorts of “enemies” and attackers. Of the nearly-four thousand students currently attending the school, and the thousands of old boys and their families who attended the carnival, only THIS young man was thus attacked. So you do the math on who caused trouble and where.

  7. Student

what a shame to put such a small incident like this in the newspapers. well, to mention referring to the article has no such facts.. they are just exaggerated. this student “Dinal” is a guy who dis-respects others and who has no good discipline. and i agree with the comment above that these people do things by money. they don’t want the real talent to upcome, but only their son’s and that is also with money, not by working hard. plus if these people do care alot about the school they won’t publish such a thing on the newspapers to make the school and the students to feel ashamed! such a disgrace. THE SCHOOL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE HE’S NOT A SCHOOL STUDENT ANYMORE AND HE WASN’T ASSAULTED BY ANY OF THE STUDENTS!

  8. Philli(student)

There’s more towards Dinal than the eye can see..

ask any random batch mate in school about him an you’d hear an earful..

    “difficulty in opening mouth. Fracture..”???

wonder who i saw on friday all frisky

there is much to know about his character

Rector has brought our school to great hight’s .. he cannot be Outrageously; blamed for such incidents

in my opinion Father Gihan did the right thing

    this is not good reporting
im an ardent reader of the sunday leader disappointed indeed

after this article ..St. Joseph’s would be like a paradise in tears

  9. reshmal

i agree with what philli asked if u ask abt his batchmate or anyone in sjc who dinal fonseka is the first reply will be he is a cricketer then the next reply u will get is he is a ‘valikaaraya” he has been founder of many fights and im pretty sure he was attacked for what he did . i too is very disappointed as an ardent reader of leader if u dont believe ma comment just consult a josephian and u will get the same reply about dinal fonseka so i ask the officials of the sunday leader to know the background of a story well and publish it.whatever their parents say abt school officials or how their son is innocent there is GOD above who knows what the truth is…………..

  10. Ma'Nonu

    Really Disappointed SundayLeader…..sigh!!!
Please Do Make News a Bit More Professional…..!!!
    All this Is Crap!!!

  11. sulakshana

It quite insane to blame the Rector or any one in Authority when the boys parents just “stood by” watching their son get assaulted? so now they go and tell the whole world abbout it? Ashamed that sundayleader is taking this view..ever heard of INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM? it QUITE different to thisONE SIDED STORY TELLING you are doing..pathetic really..you thought you will get a bit of publicity if you tarnish the name of the premier catholic school in the island? NO IT WONT WORK!!

and listen up dinal’s parents- blame yourselves before you blame anyone else..parents should be the people DIRECTLY involved with their childrens lives..if HE CHOSE to keep you out..well too bad for you..you’ll have FAILED UTTERLY as parents..bu i guess its always easier to put the blame on someone els?
GET A JOB…if your son doesnt like the school..go ahead change it..im sure no ragin maniac assaulted him just for fun…”ginnak nathuwa dumak nonagi”..heard of that?

    • shane uk

earlier these people tried to promote unp. now trying to create problems with in the party. Now publishing articles for money with out knowing the truth.shame

  12. Truth

This is not the first incident at St. Joseph’s. The college has a history of students being assaulted. Go back ten years, and you will hear more stories.
The rector and the staff, turn a ‘blind eye’ for convenience. They are by no means people who uphold discipline. The priests do not investigate, and neither do they punish the perpetrators!
God will take you through difficult times Dinal, and there will be divine justice to the hooligans, both the assaulters as well as the ‘priests and staff’

    • shane uk

god will do the needful.i know how innocent the priests & staff of sjc..Yes sir will leave this matter to god.

  13. Rality - Proud to be a Josephian!

This is indisputably one of the worst articles that the Sunday Leader has ever produced. It is a shame how an author of an article could talk of such twaddle. I do believe that this article is mainly based on fiction, knowing the student involved (Dinal Fonseka). The character of Dinal Fonseka is not close to anything portrayed in this article. He is merely a bogus individual who runs after fame at any cost – the means of attaining fame usually being immoral.
As the above comments articulate – Dinal Fonseka is reputed to cause chaos where ever he goes. He has no team spirit what so ever. I have personally experienced his arrogance, on the field and off the field. He is an individual who disrespects others. And it is understandable as to why such a commotion has occurred in the first place. I am not saying that what happened was correct. It was an immoral and unethical act. However, I am really displeased with this defamation on St. Joseph’s College Colombo. The discipline at St. Joseph’s is really strict – and the students and within the college have the best perspective on the tight discipline.
To my knowledge, Dinal Fonseka was suspended from College on several occasions (for disciplinary reasons). Why doesn’t this article articulate the reality regarding this person?? Why just report the fake ‘nice guy’ side of his? Let me guess; is this another corrupt work by the Fonseka family? (Referring to the misuse of money and wealth).
I really condemn this sham! This article portrays nothing close to the reality. If you readers wish to know the truth – why not asked the students who witnessed the whole incident? And ask everyone who knows the real side of this fake person. The Sunday Leader should take much more responsibility to what they report and publish factuality rather than phony articles. This article is hilarious in a way, since it exaggerates the whole situation and curtails on the truth.

Blame the ill-hearted Dinal Fonseka and his family for what had happened and not the hallowed institution; St. Joseph’s College! St. Joseph’s College has, is and will stand up to its motto; “In scientia et virtute” meaning “In Knowledge and Virtue”.

  14. Piyal Fernando

Well I am not a Josephian. But I know the priests and know about catholic schools. Now a days when someone fabricates a story and publishes it in a paper to make the story real for the public, it boomerangs on the writer and also on the paper as far as journalism and professionalism is concerned. This is true specially when the reader is able to comment on the article. So dear writer when you wrote this story of your son you were really spitting up.

    • Nelson Silva

I agree with Mr.Piyal Fernando, and would like to add that if the parents of Dinal think the school is not good why not take their other children to another school and leave St.Josephs without criticizing.

    • janaka

How true. I’m not an old Joe too,but agree on the discipline and values catholic schools offer the students. Read today’s Daily Mirror and see what our national hero Muralitheran had said of a catholic school and the values installed to take him to great heights.. Sunday Leader, ashamed of
      your journalism.

  15. Student

Wow……………. totally fake!! Sunday Leader, get a life and publish stuff which has some reality. The fathers did the correct thing… DO NOT BLAME THEM!!!!! Damn Dinal…. what a shame….. :/

The parents and cousins of Dinal should be aware of his actions, because I am pretty sure that he will ruin his life and his family as well. That’s what money and too much comfort could do. Dinal is a person who lets his grand mother carry his 10 kilo cricket bag, while he enjoys a bottle of energy drink. What more can you expect from someone like that? If he can not respect his own grand mother? WHAT SHAME!
But, on the other hand – the parents are frauds as well (having unpaid loans in several banks), so the son becomes one of them – a fake.

Blame the ill-hearted Dinal Fonseka and his family for what had happened and not the hallowed institution; St. Joseph’s College! St. Joseph’s College has, is and will stand up to its motto; “In scientia et virtute” meaning “In Knowledge and Virtue”.

    • old joe

Ya, very true Reality! I know his family too and all of them are liars and people who try to show a fake side. They think they are the best but they are the worst!

  17. messenger of reality...

    A COMPLETELY BIASED article…
Dinal Fonseka, as I’ve heard from the students of St. Joseph’s… is not an innocent character AT ALL… he is described by most of them only as a cricketer, a Grade-A bully, a “walikaaraya” and an over-all trouble-maker…
Judging by his own character… how can one say that he was completely innocent??? He’s apparently been in a countless number of fights, most he has caused, maybe this was the only one he could’ve fought his way out of…

  18. Loyal student

this is realy disgusting these Fonsekas think that they can buy every thing for money. Dinal is no more a student of St Joseph’s college He Failed his O/Levels and the whole family is indisciplined even the younger brothers have got caught in indisciplined acts they are a menace to our college Mr. Fonseka if this college has no disciplne why dont u take your bunch of sons and getout of college without your sons and parent(old boys) like your family the school will have perfect discipline

  19. student

cut the crap ranee Mohammad… u probably wasn’t there and don’t know what really happened… we were, and this article of yours isn’t even close to being true….

  20. Deepal

This is not the first time where the rector has lied when it came to brawls and thuggery at St. Josephs. I know of a certain incident where a Josephian was assaulted by some boys and some thugs whom they had befriended. The Rector, took no action here too.

St’ Josephs must go from strength to strength but the Rector must go.

  21. Proud of My School SJC

    Wow ms/mrs Ranee Mohomed!!
    Fractured dicsipline??
Think twice and keep thinking before you tell something like this…

  22. Better the matter be explained by the priest who is in charge of the College.
If he knows the truth let him give out that truth to the readeers. Modaya

  23. BK

typical Sunday leader! cant believe that i was foolish enough to waste my time and money on this toilet paper to read its fairly tales! would be better off if you guys call it Sunday spoiler

  24. MR

Never expected to read such a article on the Sunday leader as articles such as this are found only in gossip rags.. This is journalism at its worst… End of the day we all know that St. Joseph’s is one of the best school’s in this country and has produced many outstanding and disciplined individuals.. My grand father is a proud Josephian. Please don’t try to tarnish the school and Rector by articles such as this.

  25. Rev. Fr. Nilantha Ediriwickrema (2008-2010, staff of St. Joseph's)

yet again the Gospel has proved itself to be infallible…”YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW” or in another place it says “THE MEASURE YOU GIVE WILL BE THE MEASURE YOU GET”, any educated individual should be able to sift Truth from falsehood, & for that you need to be at the receiving end and victims of the persons concern. I was shocked at their love of the College, which becomes a contradiction of terms, with this attempt to tarnish her Golden legacy. I think St. Joseph’s college needs no one’s verdict to prove herself, for it is a self evident truth that its standards are unparalleled. But i’m ashamed that even such a prestigious education structure sometimes fails to form “some” people, simply because of their pride, as the Psalmist says, the Lord favors a humble and a contrite spirit…May be in some cases, it happens that you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! But this is typically “cry baby” attitude, don’t blame the school for your indiscipline, for education cannot be forced into people, it is not mostly taught but caught….but sadly in this case it is dropped! I am not surprised at what has happened to this student, for i saw the way he behaved and treated some teachers & students, things told at their backs, i have seen the way he skipped many a spiritual exercises ,and he hardly showed any signs of contrition after a punishment! I have never seen him consulting a spiritual Director, but instead treated “spirituality” and persons involved in it with sarcasm. Not surprising at all…you may fool people and buy them with your money, but you can’t fool God and his anointed ministers…we love our College and God who guides its destinies…!
And for the people who try to white wash tombs, with golden words under the pretext of Journalism, Please for God’s sake do some research before you write articles or publish them…for many people know more facts than most so called papers, that publish any thing and every thing…this is garbage stuff! we know that many love to tarnish the good name of St. Joseph’s College and to earn popularity by doing it…God forsake such opportunists!

  26. student

I totaly agree with Fr, Nilantha, U also being an old boy u know how our college treat all students equally. May The Good Lord forgive them for they do not Know what they do.

  27. Trinie

I too agree with Fr Nilantha. and just to add ……….

How many Students past & present & non Josephians participated in the carnival after the Josephian Walk this year ? And out of that only one incident ? Did someone select him to be assalted out of all the others ? or did Dinal bring it upon himself ? Couldn’t Dinal have started the fight ?
That is what Ranee Mohamed should have found out before writing the article & the Editor should have used common sense before selcting an article like this for publication.

At lease put things right in your next issue………

By Publishing articles like this are you trying to increase circulation ?

RIGHT MINDED PEOPLE WHY DON’T WE ALL STOP BUYING THE “Sunday Leader”

  28. prav

Well I dont need to comment abt the people involved in this as I don’t know Dinal personally and its unjust to judge a person by what others say. But many would know by now about this whole incident……. My comment is for Sunday Leader. As an unbiased viewer of this situation, I would highly recommend to get to the bottom of this situation without just seeking for one sided opinions, and maybe accept the gravity of this article you have published. Our college would not take any actions against you people as thats what me and all my fellow josephians were taught since 1896 to this very present day: “forgive your enemies”. But it is more of an ETHICAL act for you to publish another article maybe accepting your flaw you have committed and the disrespect you have brought on this prestigous alma mater. But IF unjustice was to Dinal please try to find the PEOPLE who are responsible for this act and bring them to justice not the school…… (Its not fait to judge an institution with just an act by one person)
Just for your thought dear writer: Studied in SJC for a whole of 13 years I can undoubtedly say that NO student in SJC would assault another student in the presence of his parents. You can call it commonsense too… :) so think about it a bit.
    Thanks!

  29. Hasi

All i cn say is tht d college has nothin 2 b blamed…..n v as senior students of d college knw abt dinal’s conduct……n all he wants is fame….n plz…ths is a request 2 dinal n his family….dn’t bait the name of ur school for petty advantages….God will take care abt it…!!!

  30. A Thomian

Parents shouldn’t get involved with their children’s fights and blam a reputed school without laying the blame where it should.. Obviously this article has been orchestrated by the parents of Dinal to praise themselves and give a character certificate to Dinal.

Parents should not blame others for their children’s misdeeds. It is clear that from what has been said so far that the cause of Dinal’s alleged aggresive behaviour is due to his parents’ not chastising him and instead making excuses for him.

It is unfair for parents to get artciles published against a well reputed school and Josephians after 4 claiming to have four generations of Josephians in the family.

    Come come Fonseka..!

  31. saman ramakumara

anee Ranee Mohamed hw much did the fonsekas pay u to publish this article ??? dinal fonseka is a loser and a rowdy . fonny nw money cant save u … to bad … get out from out team … let the true talent play for the school .

  32. Ronald

From what I see, this situation has taken place as a result of the college management , who initially favoured the Fonseka family, now trying to put the skids on them. Anyway better late than never. There are a few other Fonseka types (influancing those that matter) trying to disrupt the junior cricket structure in the college right now. Lets hope the Management stems the rot sooner than later. Or else it wont be long before we see similar articles hitting the press.

  33. Shenal/ Peterite

After reading your comments…..It looks like, Dinal is unpopular at school eventhough hes’ a talented cricketer. It suprises me that no-one is concerned about the attack! but coment about irrelevent stuff! Mind you This had happened at the schools own backyard!… Surprised to see no-one was able to catch the attackers. It sounds like an inside job to me! We used to stand-by for our school/class mates at St peters.

    • ravi

we too stand by our school mates as long as they are correct but this guy doesn’t deserve it. thus its pathetic to see peterites bothering about other people’s discipline when their own people are fighting all around the place

    • Sean

I totally agree with you Shenal… I have been following the thread of comments and you have been the only person who has spoken of a valid point. “Surprised to see no-one was able to catch the attackers. It sounds like an inside job to me!”

Well no 1 seems to no bout dinal he’s a gud4nthing fellow who alwys brings thugs from out side after paying money and luves to gt into fights and impress him self . Specially with women around. I’m 100% sure that this scan came about after he trying to be macho in front of people and stuck his mouth in places unnecessary because thats the kind of student he was, the school i’m sure is happy to have such a so called (loyal student) who contradicts his own words.

  35. an eye witness

i was there to see that his father and grand mother were both shouting asking him to stop! and now they are blaming the people who stopped him. others definitely stopped him and let the other guy escape to prevent a fight which would have been even dangerous. though these people claim that fr. gihan has been in the school for few months he has been there for more than two years. thus why don’t the so called ”innocent ” give the reason for this assaulting? its pretty obvious that there must be a story behind the scene which they are hiding. as we have always known that there wont be a smoke without a fire. he has enemies from all around the town thanks to his ”angelical” character, it may be scolding someone Else’s sister with his ”sweet” vocabulary or asking a passer by for a fight to get the limelight towards him. the only fault of the rector is letting him be in this school for all this time. i am dead sure that one day he’ll end up being like his uncle who has lead their business ”plate” studios and his plantations to bankruptcy, spending the day at a bar and wake up in the morning by a stray dog’s lick to realize that he’s being sleeping on the pavement all nightlong. its just the thing that these people are blind folded with the money and the power which surrounds them. best of the luck dear fonsekas!!! just rotte in hell!!!

The incident behind the story is, Liquor was sold at college entrance. Few boys were badly drunk. They were trying to take few girls by force to dance. few decent boys who were with Dinal stopped this drunkets. These boys called and got a person to come inside the school and attack Dinal.

Rector knows that liquor was sold at the entrance. Also he knows that few school boys were drunk. Even head master was informed when these drunkets were forcing these young girls. But took no action. Stupid discipline.

    • dear eye witness
i waz there throughout next 2 u.take a little rest & read the article again.how dare u use fr g….’s name! GBU.

  36. Trinie

Hope the fonsekas achieved their goal of getting cheap publicity through Sunday Leader……….I think they have a grudge against the school. ( 4 generations …? I doubt it) I suppose Dinal would have been denied of various posts because of the strict disipline in the school. So they are now trying to make it out that there is no disipline at St Joseph’s…………SOUR GRAPES ????????

  37. Ashan

Its A Damn shame!!! I thought U Joe’s had better dicipline than that……
I won’t say that this story is completely true but I was there, n I did see alot of you’ll Drunk!!!!!!

    SHAME ON U JOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. kris

The rector is to be blamed. He is turning a blind eye when ever an assault is reported. In some cases the child got hammered is suspended mainly because the other party has influenced. I have had many bitter experiences with this rector. The fights are becoming more and more since he is almost encouraging it. During his tenure so many children got brutally hammered by thuggery children and he kept an blind eye. This is happening inside school my dear. I know it happend today as well (26.7.2010) One small thug hit a tamil boy brutally in account of same incident. Wait and see, the Tamil boy will not keep quite as well, since justice is not done. Now it has come to a situation, boys avoid complaining to rector since he takes no action.

    • Loyal student

      Helo kris
are u also a fonseka? a guy without a backbone? we also were in school yesterday (26.7.10) but we never heard about an incident like that. come on act like a true josephian if such incident took place u should have brought it to the notice of the athority(how can u because it did not happen) I think like the foseka’s u also would have tried to buy the rector and failed miserably. dont try to tarnish the reputation of our rector he is a man with principals

      • Kris

Principals my foot. Small thugs wait until the target is cornered to attack without much notice. If you dont know after being in school, go to year 11 english medium best class and check with students whether a tamil boy was attacked by a school boy on account of the same incident on 26.7.10.

Better keep your eyes open next time.

Also check why this was not complained to father Rector. I am sure you will get a good answer. Nobody wants to get hammered and get punished from rector as well.

  39. schoolmate

Come on Ashan! we all know that boys get drunk on that day! Thats Normal! and part n parcial of the WALK? but question is WHO DID it?

  40. Marius

Please be rational and not blow things out of proportion ! The parents along with other members of the family have been eye witnesses to this purpoted incident. Can they explain what they did to stop the assaliant from assaulting their “angel” ! The Fonsekas are well known in College for all the wrong reasons ! So why do we right thinking Joes give them their much desired publicity. Just ignore them and it will just fade away, same as all the other evils the Fonsekas planned against our beloved Alma Mater !

  41. old joe

Everyone should understand that a person cant clap with one hand, in this case knowing about the personal involve one hand clapping even if it is possible would be impossible. As we all know fights just don start , plus knowing dinals reputation as a personal , whos well known of stating fights, the assault would have been a reply for what he did.

people who read this may think that i promote violence in school, but it is not the case. Im against the assault. The whole Fonseka family is in blame they spend money for dinal (belove me there are way richer students than dinal at joes but they never miss use money like he does), plus the perants also do promote the missuse of money arcording to my point of view, why i say this is because as we all know Dinal represented the school in the 50over encounter in 2009 ( big match limited over againt SPC) came to bat at number 11 but dint even ball ? was he any use to the team ? why was he choosen ? was it cuz of money ? this is a good example of what fonsekas do with there money at school

  42. BASH

Is that the correct way to punish a mischievous boy ???? Is this called discipline ????

    • schoolmate

I agree with BASH? If Dinal is that type of a boy Y not school took any actions? He has been there for more than 10 years? isnt it? So why the school was unable to deceplin him? I blame the school?

  43. Old Joe

After reading the comments made by many, I doubt the discipline maintained by school. As one old boy says ” we were taught to forgive enemies”. Then how can this child get brutally hammered. Also many has commented that Dinal is mischievous and does not respect teachers etc. If he has studied at St.Joseph’s for 11 years he is a final product put out by St.Josephs. No matter what he is a Joe now.

The problem here is when ever an assault take place, Rector should take stern action against the person who assaults. I have noticed that this does not happen many times. Recently few children got caught drunk inside school during school time, but rector didnt even suspend anyone.

Recently when one child has come to attack another, he has told that if he hits he will complain to rector. Then the child who came to attack has told that if you complain to rector that you got hammered nothing will happen. Now most of the students have taken a stand that they are not protected against these thuggery students and they need to find protection from elsewhere. Wait and see where our school will endup.

I am sure Dinal’s father is angry since he seas a big difference in discipline from his time to now.

Fact remains that the leader published an article without doing a proper investigation about what really happened. From what we hear there is no proof to say it was an inside job. All we know is that the ever notorious Dinal Fonseka had a fight with someone at 10.30 in the night when no school authorities were in the vicinity.

I can tell you that even in schools renown for discipline like SJC, you have instances where boys fight. In fact fighting can be second nature to some adolescent males. School authorities punish them when they withness or have enough proof of what happened. To find out more they always perform an investigation. But here before an investigation the leader has published one side of a twisted story. Also If the Leader is going to publish every instance where 2 young boys hit each other, then they will need to publish a 5000 page newspaper.

In all probability out of 3500 boys at SJC 1 idiot got into a fight with an unknown guy. Does that mean that the entire schools discipline has fallen? In every basket of the best apples your always bound to have at least one rotten one.

I think SJC should consult some of their greatest legal minds and sue Ranee & the paper for defamation !!!

  45. Voluntas Dei

That St. Joseph’s College is a great school is undeniable. May it always be so for that was the aim of its founders. Yet, there is also to be considered that fact that it is run by men. The fact that they wear a cassock is what makes them stand out and identifiable. It does not make the wearer of the cassock a saint or an angel. The Rev. Edirisinghe has stood up bravely for the school. I say well done! He has heaped scorn and sadly inferred judgment which makes one believe that Dinal is a child of Satan. He talks specifically of his not consulting a spiritual Director. Come Rev. Sir, being in the wrong place at the wrong time applies to incidents like the Tsunami, a plane bus or train crash. This is less devastating than that this is simply calling upon the College to investigate what appears to be a planned attack. It follows from the article that the priest present had a rather harsh attitude towards the complainant brushing it away at the Police inquiry as lies and words never uttered. By this is it not tantamount to saying that “priests do not utter lies” Pray watching the spiritual and probably moral decay taking place in this young chap. What did the Rev. Edirisinghe do? Nothing. He just let him go to hell. The Rev. should read the Scriptures if he has forgotten it. How about St. James whose feast we celebrated on the same day. He has set himself as a judge of Dinal yet St. James Chapter 4 Verse 12 states thus “There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another” And at the end of his Epistle he states again in Verse 19-20 “Brethren, if anyone among you wonders from the truth, and someone turns him back let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of sins” Need I say more to the dear Rev.

A careful study of the others comments reveals that under pseudo names is merely a matter of people who know the truth and are afraid to say it so they rather state untruths. Please note that Dinal like any human being has his weak points. The question that now arises is, if he was so bad and despicable accused of so many crimes or misdemeanors why did not this school renowned for its “strict discipline” kick him out of its gates. There is so much talk of the money power of the Fonseka family, are readers to infer even in a remote or subtle way that they used their money well to buy up the Rector as who continues to tolerate Dinal? I doubt, not even entertain such an idea about the Rector. He has always been and still is a man of honour on whom God has blessed him with 25 years in His vineyard. May more fruitful years to you dear Fr. Please do the right thing. Investigate, and as Fr. Gihan has said see that justice is done to all although he himself did not do justice to the case in question by being brusque in his attitude and his tongue slipped handling an event of this magnitude for the first time . There is not a single specific accusation leveled at Dinal. There are all general comments. Let the Rector call for his Record Book. It might make interesting reading.

Discipline is sadly lacking from the very highest to the lowest in this land. It does not mean it must be tolerated at St. Joseph’s of all schools. It is something the Rector is aware of though he has as a human being not quite grasped the situation. Two or three are such that they have been forwarded to His Grace the Archbishop. Let’s wait and see. To Rev. Edirisinghe all I could say is “If you suffer from Truth decay, brush up your Bible.

    VOLUNTAS DEI.

These Fonseka’s have always been trouble makers.
They are known as the family of SISIES.
They are very good at writing dirty letters and not mentioning their name. They even took the previous SJC rector to courts and tried to shame the college and failed miserably.Any school will have a few refracts like this.
Poor Dinal has been let down by his family.Being naughty is ok afterall Dinal.

Just imagine if Dinal played rugby?Ranee would be busy writing everytime he was tackelled.

St Joseph’s is a great institution for students and father rector has done a great job.DESCIPLINE AND VALUES IS HIS MOTTO.Thank you father.
He is not a man of fame and never encourages the boys to go behind it too. Neither does he expects appreciation.
Thanks to him our boys will not work towards their objectives in life at the expense of others.

I would have never wanted to go to a school where there was no fights afterall.

  47. schoolmate

The school should take have a inquiry into this matter. after all dinal was assaulted! previous misdemeanours are irrelevant. school authorities should have taken necessary action then. Dinal was hammered and now he’s the target! everyone seems to be blaming him. i am in the same grade as him and i assure that dinal has never been suspended or been involved in any serious altercations with anyone. Please stop blaming the “Fonsekas” and treat Dinal equally. He still is a student :)

  48. schoolmate

i think so called father rector would have had a better offer than what fonsekas offered?????????????????????? It could be the reason dinal failed this time. So i am confused who got paid to make dinal play the 50overs encounter as the 11th man? y was dinal in school for this long with all his so called attitude problems? so teachers and farthers and the rector must be well known of taking bribes from all the fonsekas?
Any way we all know how much each parent paid to put their kids to St Josephs Avavadayata wada Adarshaya uthum Lu.

    • Factfinder

I agree with you. You are absolutely right, farther rector must be a rich man afterall.

      • Loyal student

Yes Fr. Rector is a Very rich man. He is only rich with good values and principals and not with money. thats why he has problems with rotten people like the Fonsekas(who think that they can buy people for money).

  49. you

dear old joe! if u know fonsekas paid money to get dinal into the 1st eleven team? WHO TOOK THE MONEY? Did Rector take the money? also to Rector to keep quite on this matter, someone else had offered more! who is he?…. anyway money well spent:;;to keep fr Rector quite>>>>
