A man set himself a blaze opposite the head office of the UNP, Sirikotha, this evening.
The man reportedly in his late 50s is currently being treated at the Kalubowila Hospital for severe burn injuries.
According to the information department the victim, one Rienzie Algama, was reportedly demanding that the proposals submitted by the UNP reforms committee should be implemented.
Kalubowila Hospital officials have said that the victim was in critical condition due to the severe burn injuries.

HE IS A DEDICATED TRUE MAN.NOT LIKE THAT MINISTER WIMAL WEERAWANSA,A LIER,CHEATED THE WORLD AND INSULTED HIMSELF FOR WITH FALSE PROMISE OF ‘FAST UN TO DEATH’.THIS IS A HERO,EVENTHOUGH SHOULD NOT DO THIS KIND OF UNNECESSARY THINGS.
‘Those who cheat the death today, lives to fight on another day’ may be his motto.
Cowards die many times but brave men die only once.
agreed with eldorados statement. but this is neither brave man or coward but person with a extreame mental condition who should have soughted help from sumithrayo or some organization. his death will not change anything nor wl be remmembered but as donkey.
Leela
That doesn’t make …….wansa of being another hero. That would never ever happen. The real heros never cheat. And real heros never follow or
support such cheats
LIKE YOUR PAL WEERAWANSA (GONWANSA)
may be a real depressed guy who wud do such a thing. Vimal is smart & lives to fight another day! what abt karunanidi who fasted with vada under his pillow & giant fans around him to keep kool? this guy died for the UNP ??? should have been having mental problems
Wimal has shown cleary his true nature many occations. He wanted to live to cheat people again in another way on later day again.
He is a some kind of lunatic …!!!!
it shouldn’t have happen. People should be educated how to cope with political change. Sri Lanka lacks in humanity/social education. Educaiton is very much material oriented. There is no educaiton in huamanity/social justice. As a result, many Sri Lankans do not know how to cope with trauma. This inciedent proves the need for social/humanity educaiton.
Excuse me, what was that again, sri lankan’s do not have what?
Get back to your senses and see how badly you generalize things and make stereo types !
Plz do not disrespect the ‘majority’ of the ‘SL people’ due to your unfounded stereo types!!
This a hearts Cry of a very Desperate Patriot,Who knows beyond one can Imagine of the plight of His beloved Country and it’s future of Hopelesness, It is so simple too see it that, It’s own people are the Country’s Worst enemy.
Raj- you need to be physiologically analyzed. Then what do u say about the gulf & Africa? Google your self & see not forgetting UK & USA stats. Just one incident out of the blues don’t prove anything. For people like you there is a place call angoda in srilanka!
He is not a burgerkin hero like u friend
Tragic but stupid.
This guy died today, its tragic and unfortunate because the Cause he died for is not worth it. Reforms in the UNP will always be a sham as long as those at the top in the UNP does not realize there is a need for reform. The present UNP leadership is completely out of touch with reality and is blissful in the ignorance that he is well past the “use by” date. This is a wake up call for the likes of Wild Boar Cader of Gampola and other potential crossovers who are under the delusion that voters gave them their preference vote because of their personality. Hacks like this wouldn’t garner 10 votes if they contested independently and as a mainstream political party the UNP would do well to get its act together and realize that there are people who genuinely care about the state of the party. I will quote the words of Lyndon B. Johnson to MR and Ranil ” What we won when all of our people united must not be lost in suspicion, distrust, selfishness and politics. Accordingly I shall not seek nor accept the nomination of my party for another term in office.” To expect statesmanship from these two is plain wishful thinking isn’t it.
Invain his death. If he wanted to sacrifice his life for a worthy cause, then he should have fought against teh LTTE cadres who are metaly sick and got rid of a few.
Probably a conspiracy from Laksman and the goons.
Rienzie Algama setting himself ablaze will not deter Ranil W. Ranil W will only dance to Malik S’s tune. Don’t we have men with common sense in the UNP who understand this.
Ranil is in India for more than a few days now. His wife and Sagala boy who lost elections are with him. What on hell is happening is anybody;s guess. Time for Ranil to be kicked upstairs as the Senior UNP leader.
May be this is a sign of worst things to trigger meaningful political reforms in Sri Lanka. Politicians in all parties must expect many civilians sacrificing their lives to achieve real reforms in Sri Lanka. Political leadership in a democratic country belongs to the peole of every race and religion but definitely not to the priviledged families that have been ruling Sri Lanka since the departure of British rulers. We need CHANGES now.
His act is for the sake of democracy. you should have a good opposition to have democracy in the country, If opposition party is weak, then the ruliing party will blindly act and rule the country un-democratically. Therefore we should pray for this man to get cured.
This man must have been encouraged by Karu Jayasuriya so as to bring discredit to Ranil W.
This article again shows Sunday Leader’s pathetic media behavior. How did you came to the conclusion of that Mr. Algama was insisting reforms? What are the facts? That poor man doesn’t call for UNP reforms and his final letter speaks what was his intention. He was a Ranil supporter in his whole political career.
Sunday Leader does not hesitate to use a tragic death of poor man to support its political and social agenda, and they always are rewarded for that effort.
What kind of an idiot would burn himself for the sake of UNP? especially the party leadership is held by a totally incompetent mutt. He should have become a buddhist monk to get attention. What a waste of life.
