Students Protesting In Front Of Fort Railway Station
Thousands of students gathered in front of Fort railway station, Colombo, to protest the death of a fellow student in a protest down south, at Ruhuna University. In this case a student died after clashes with the police. His mother later retracted her statement saying the police only beat his back and bag and the IGP Police said the student died of natural causes. The word of the police aside, however, thousands of students have brought the protest to Colombo to take a stand against police brutality.

Hussein, You got it wrong as well. JVP is never popular, it’s always CBK, MR or SF used them because they like a show. The JVP votebase will always remain very low, but the show they make in the country during events like elections makes you think they are big. JVP offered one of their national list slots to MR’s party in MR’s first term, very clearly because they knew they were voted in by MR’s people, not by their own followers.

Nicky Karu, Are the comments you’ve written based on any intelligence reports or are they simply your political views? Anyway, protests like these should never be allowed. These students may look like JVP activists to outsiders but if you associate them, you will know they have no political affiliations. What happens at universities is, when a large number of less-privileged youngsters get together, given such freedom at universities, everybody tries to raise their voice eventually seeking refuge in one of the powerful groups who they could relate to in some way. While the intelligent lot gets on with their work, the second lot, the educable but unintelligent lot believes, it is their duty to engage in politics directed to the dissemination of information with an emphasis on social justice encompassing intellectuals and social groups close to them. In a society like ours, it is always convenient to find social misdemeanours and that’s exactly what this second lot does, finds them and uses them. Coincidentally, JVP does the same thing, but once the students are out of the university, you can hardly find them in the JVP camp. Therefore, while the JVP will remain as a small party with a negligible membership, these student groups will always be visible, unless of course there is a paradigm shift in the university setup. Until then, the police presence is important at university gates to protect the general public from these misinformed and ill-disciplined students.

Are they also ‘JVP thugs in student Garb’? So you also agree with the IGP that the student died of natural cause? What would you have done if the student who died was your Son or Brother of yours? What insulting Budhist monks, havent you seen the videos of this ‘insulting’ business by the Police of the regime not so long ago opposite the Fort railway station. Thank God you have become a ‘Former ‘ intelligence officer , otherwise you could have changed that Agency like the intelligence Agencies of Srilanka. Protests, Demonstrations, Freedom of Speach,Freedom of press are the backbone of a real democracy. I do not expect a typical Srilankan like you to understand those norms. I can see that you have the qualifications needed by the present regime to be next High Commissioner to UK and when you come to London, go and see the people camping out in front of the British parliament and it is called’Peace Village’. For your information people power and demonstrations changed the course of the Vietnam War. If ‘Warehouse Security guards and Forecourt Assistants can enter politics, earn millions, have mansions in California and fool people like you,why can’t the students.
