SC Discharges Lanka Editor

The Supreme Court today (25) warned and discharged the Editor of the Lanka Irida newspaper, Chandana Sirimalwatte from the alleged contempt of court charges and ordered him to publish a correction on a news item which appeared in the newspaper in June this year.

The charges against the Editor were taken up before the Bench comprising Chief Justice Asoka de Silva and Justice N.G. Amaratunga.

The Editor was also directed to publish the corrections with the same prominence in his newspaper.

Sirimalwatte expressed his regret for the publication of the said news item in dispute.

He told Court that he or the editorial board of “Lanka Irida Sangraha” or Lanka Fast Publishers Ltd did not have any intention directly or indirectly of bringing the Judiciary into contempt by publishing the news item in dispute in the Lanka Irida Sangraha on June 27, 2010.

During the World War 2, Hitler had some kind of juditial system which ahd given indirect threats to media and freedom of expression. Sometimes people scared to go to seek protection from legal system due to fear means democratic values are in danger .Thats why I remind what martin Luther King has said about justice.Once he said ‘ INJUSTICE IN ANYWHERE IS A THREAT TO JUSTICE EVERYWHERE! …….
