Sri Lanka’s Chief of Immigration has terminated the visa given to Ms. Elizabeth Ogaya who is the Project Co-ordinator of the Human Rights Defenders Protection Programme (HRDPP). Ms. Ogaya, the Kenyan born HR professional is attached to the US-based Non Violence Peace Force (NVPF) in Colombo and was given until the 30th of August to prepare to leave the country. Ms. Ogaya becomes the fourth foreign national to have their visa terminated by the Immigration department from the NVPF organisation.

Florington Asirwatham, the Country Director for NVPF, said that no reason had been given. He was of the view that this cancellation was to do with the general tightening up of visas for NGO’s in the country, as opposed to a direct conflict with the government on the Human Rights Defenders programme, which is still active in the North and East of the island.

The term Human Rights is very subjective. It generally does not apply to violations committed by Western Nations on non-white people. However, its enforced in all its deadly ferocity on poor countries who commit similar violations. Else how do you explain the deafening silence on the HR violations committed by NATO in Afghanistan and Iraq? And now by Canada on Tamils aboard Sun City. Elizabeth Ogaya is someone who they call a House Nigger. In days of American slavery, slaves who were obedient to their white masters were taken out of the cotton fields and given domestic jobs as drivers and cooks. They still exists today in different forms.

Moron, this is the 21st century that we live in. The so called nigger is the President of the United States.
I agree with they still exists in the form of slaves to the dynasty family of Rajapksa’s.

        Steve

Do NOT insult the President Barack Obama of USA…

      • ranjit de mel

mr.steve obamas mother is a white american.looks like you are a white rascist like the majority of the white americans.with time the majority of the white woman would prefer blacks and the coloured ,because they are not dull and better f—–s. ranjit de mel

      • UK

STEVE, BEHIND A COMPUTOR, YOU ARE SUCH A BIG SHOT CALLING SOME ONE LIKE Mr OBAMA NAMES. you are just nothing, compared with Mr Obama.

    • Nilanse

I can asure you human rights do not only apply to violations committed by non-white nations as you put it. As a member of Amnesty International, I have been involved in cases eg. the death penalty in the US or the situation in Guantanamo Bay. This is only a couple of examples, and both examples apply to a Western country with a White majority.
Human rights must be protected all over the world, no matter if they are committed by Western Nations or not. Sri Lanka has a serious problem with human rigths violations, and we can’t just stand there and do nothing. Mostly it is the poor who are the victims of these violations. And they need somebody to speak out for them.

      • hanuman

of course you’re right. this is why the western politisized NGOs should rather look into their own countries’ violations of human rights etc instead of wasting time about far away places with different value systems. (As a HR defender, did you even consider raising any serious voice against the current ethnic cleansing in europe that’s happening rightnow under your nose against Roma people??? Tell us what you did. I guess nothing. You’d prefer to attack your favorite non-western countries for all the ills right? why? more fashionable or more profitable????
Example: Belgium, France, Denmark everywhere they’re sending busloads of innocent children/pregnant mothers/women etc back to Romania/Bulgaria etc who were even born in France or other places so it’s a clear violation of all rights one can immagine… Nice human rights eh? Do you not have any shame to poke your nose into a great country like Sri Lanka where thanks to our ancient value systems based on eastern philosophy of harmonious living, all rights to every living being including humans are assured (as long as they respect others)???? Engaging in dirty politics is not going to help anyone. not even yourself.
Do we have to teach you how to do your job properly as a human rights defender??? Either do your job right or just don’t be a pain to others. Go protest in front of EU parliament if you have guts.

  7. R.M.B Senanayake

What Human Rights. That is a decadent West’s creation. We do things differently in our ancient culture. We boil those whom the King suspects ( wrongly )of having illicit sexual familiarity with the Queen. If he suspects treacherous behavior like that of Ehalepola then the wife must pound her children in a mortar. Sarath Fonseka is lucky he got away without losing his life. But he is not out of the woods yet. How can we tolerate these NGO busybodies who seek to interfere with our sovereign right to deal with our people as it pleases the government

    • punchinilame

So, Mr. RMB Senanayake supports this cultural thing, in that HE MR exempts two

wife-murderers from the Hangman, as an example.. Probably this is a

precedence for someone in the Clan about to commit murder!!!

With all these going ons, does one expect to receive GPS+

  8. BRYCE

How come no one mentions the HR situation in Iraq or Afghanistan? Ooops that’s exempt because NATO is there. (cough cough) Well it applies to non-white third world countries that depend on IMF handouts. In Afghanistan its called co-lateral damage (cough cough)… ok next question please!

    • Justitia Omnibus

Where do you think all the exposures of Abu Ghraib etc. came from. Warts and all, there are still some safeguards within the much-maligned “international community.”

Are you going to give the Rajapaksa regime credit for the Wikileaks exposures as well? Pray tell us from where they came.

Self-righteous, half-baked rubbish does nothing for us in this country unless it is to cover-up for human rights violations that need to be exposed, here, in Afghanistan, Iraq, Russia, Burma, Iran, China or anywhere else in the world for that matter. Or does Bryce believe in different standards for our “enemies” and different ones for our “friends” such as the last four nations listed?

  9. Bluff Bluff

What is the difference between Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka?

    • Lankawick

In Sri Lanka…we respect our women….

      Our Mothers..Wifes….Daughters…Aunts…all ladies….

      • Lankawicked,
In Sri Lanka do you respect women, Great, how about rape cases? How about prositiution? I do agree some women beautiful….. Anarkalee….. Getha………

      • AVB

Somebody said, Sri Lanka…we respect our women…. in contrary to Saudi Arabia.. What a joke… Sri Lankan sell their mothers and sisters as house maids (unskilled laborers) to Saudi.. Is this the respect you do to your mothers and sisters!!!

        • punchinilame

India has banned its women from going as house-maids to S.Arabia? They
respect women – not we Silly lankans.

    • gusgemba

like in Saudi in Sri Lanka we do not stone at culprits and we dont cut the hands for stealing. This two things are more than enough for a stupid like you to know the difference of the two countries.

  10. kiri

There is no Human Rights left the protect in the fools paradise!

  11. dagobert

    Damn good. Chase them away

Asian Legal Resouces Centre (ALRC) another form of AHRC, release a report on 30/Aug/2010 on Sanitation & Water as Human Rights.

They are concerned about the situation in Sri Lanka and about 1.8 million allegedly suffering anually due to the neglect of Water & drainage Board.

BUT, NOTHING ABOUT THE 20 MILLION IMINENT STARVATION OF PEOPLE IN PAKISTAN WHO ARE SUBJECT TO ACCUTE WATER BOURNE DECEASES AND WITH NO RECOURSE.

THIS IS THE TRUE NATURE OF THESE HUMAN RIGHTS VULTURES.
CHASE THEM AWAY. THEY ARE HERE IN SL FOR A GOOD TIME AND WITH A HIDDEN AGENDA.

  12. Florington Asirwatham
Looks a familiar name; “Asirwatham ” Ha!
    Human rights; what human rights?
What about the human rights of the people in the other parts of the country.
Ms. Ogaya Please go and check the human rights in the UNO

  13. human

Human rights are for humans! concidering the nature of majority in Sri Lanka, they should have sent a group of animal rights defenders or a barbarian right group to Sri Llanka. That will make much sense to the Government. Sorry, NVPF, you are in the wrong context with a wrong mission.

  14. saman (us)

f……ing world is so stupid.IMF, WORLD BANK should learn lesson from EU. GOD BLESS EU!!!!!!

  15. Mahinda

Ban Kee Moon and all the large powerful Tamil diaspora have already been successful in inflicting an international human rights inquiry into the killings of thousands of innocent Tamils. Sl will be crippled soon. The honey moon will be over.

    • mo fu chalieh

It is we sri lankans who have brought sri lanak to this situation by voting for a corrupt lawless govt. Even now we talk about respect for females when we cant provide for them and we shamelessly send them to slavery in the middle east. We question others right to question our human rights records not knowing that one day it is our own rights that would be violated if we do not stand up against wrong doings by our govt irrespective of whats happening in other countries.

  16. Hard knox

Role of NGO and INGO’s must be curtailed in every country. We have to look for the real rationale behind these NGO and INGO, the objectives are blurred evetually they get caught in the campaign to save their jobs. most of these guys returning back to their countries end-up in enemployment lines. These unwoprthy NGO’s and INGO’s sometimes become front line banner carriers of shady organizations such as TRO. So do not cry, these are useless individuals, perhaps they must go back to countries like Kenya, Sudan and campaign for Human Rights of their own people.

  17. SRI LANKA’S DICTATOR IS ONE OF THE WORST HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATORS TODAY IN THE WORLD.UNO,EU,USA AND ALL DEMOCRATIC COUNTRIES SHOULD IMPOSE RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL FOR THEM TO THEIR COUNTRIES UNTILL CLEAR THEM FROM WAR CRIMES BY UNO INVESTIGATIONS.THEY ARE STORING MILLIONS OF STOLEN MONEY FROM GOVERNMENT AND LOOTED MONEY FROM LTTE,IN OTHER COUNTRIES.
