JVP: Time Is Running Out For Democracy
The JVP today (2) said the government’s move to introduce constitutional amendments would create a dictatorship in the country.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva addressing a gathering opposite the Fort Railway station where the party launched a leaflet distribution campaign to create awareness among the public about the constitutional amendments said the proposal to remove the two-term limit on the Executive President would consolidate the power base of one family.
He said the amendments would also minimize chances of holding free and fair elections in the country in future.
He charged that time was running out for democracy in the country with even some opposition parties deciding to support the government.
- Tilvin Silva of the JVP speaking to press

The time ran out on democracy the day you (JVP) joined hands with SLFP and toppled the then democratic government. The beginning of the end of Sri Lanka began when JVP used all its energy in scare mongering and depriving some NOT to vote and helped Mahinde win the presidency.
Now cry for the spilled milk!
HAHA your right.. but the thing here is there is nothing wrong in extending the term.. the only this is there is a bunch of cowards are responsible for fair elections for instance the head of the election commision plus not just that the it is always easy for the person in power to win because the elections are never done in a free and fair manner!! So a limited term really does suit Sri Lanka.. if considering a removal I think it is best atleast if presidential elections are held every 4 years..
Known devil is better than unknown angel. Let him continue as long as he wins. Will RW make sure his victory in future too?
Free and fair elections? In Sri Lanka? Are you joking?
JVP was dead right in supporting MR during 2005 election to get Mahinda to power and setting the stage to defeat LTTE militarily which would not have happened under RW because preferred a negotiated solution rather than a military one. Then JVP left the government due to high level corruption and bad governance but supported military campaign from outside. The rest is history. JVP never expected the situation which the country is facing today.
MEGA PROJECTS in SriLanka will produce further burdon to the NATION. Those are extremly not Cost-Effective and the tax payor shoud bare the repayment cost. In the present globle village MAHARAJANOS are not existing for a long time. The SriLankan people are not so stupid as the politicians of this regime.
You better mind your own business in where you are. Our Maharajano is standing in Sri Lanka and he is looking after us very well. He gave us a liberated country for us and our children. Therfore we owe him a lot and ready to accept as our leader for many more years. There are useless guys like you criticizing the motherland from outside Sri Lanka not helping by one cent to Sri Lanka. You guys owe to motherland and please repay the money spent by poor Sri Lanka for your free education.
MR is the best leader i ever had. let him rule until people decide otherwise. we dont have to worry for constitutional changes as long as the elections are fair since people can select the leader with their votes. right ?
Yes right, as long as the elections are fair. But was the last one fair? It will be the same fate for future ones too. Democracy is dead and buried.
Cant expect anything good from this govt. Sheer greed to be in power.
The JVP is the only capable party to organise the MASSES and perform a democratic revolution. I beg from our young people such as Vimiukthi Kumarathunga and the only son of late Hon. Rohana Wijeweera to join hand with the JVP.
If elections are fair no need to worry, but the way these gready politicans acting we cannot expect that will happen in the future.
SRI LANKA NEVER BEEN A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY FOR POOR AND POWERLESS PEOPLE.IT WAS AND IT IS NOW,A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY FOR POWERFULL AND RICH.THESE IS A LITTLE BIT DEMOCRACY FOR TO CHANGE GOVERNMENTS,THAT DEMOCRACY ALSO NOW NO MORE WITH MAHINDA’S DICTATORSHIP.RAJAPAKSA FAMILY RULE IS NOW ESTABLISHED AND ALL THE OPOOSITION AND ABLEMEN IN MILITARY ARE KEEP OUT OF THE POSITIONS,SO THE RULERS CAN RUN THE SHOW WITHOUT CHALLENGE.SEEMS PEOPLE OF SRI LANKA HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER GENERATION TO SEE DEMOCRACY.
Another Mao tse tung is inevitable.
I realy dont know why people keep saying negative things as always. We do know there is no perfect democracy or near perfect democracy in this world and never will be too.Cause at the end of the day people run govmts and we do know we all are different. What i have noticed what ever gov does there is always some critics, and they got nothing better to do morning to night just type negative comments on and on..This Mahinda may not be the Mr perfect but i have one question for all pandits including Palipana ( old dude got nothing much to do but just killing his tweelight years in the net just like a teenager) who else better to run the country better than Mahinda? There is none..!! beside he loves Srilanka better than anyone in this sites including myself ..he has proved it. least country is peaceful and he is trying to to his best. we all know some politicians can be corrupt. But as some one else said before known devil is better than unknown god!!!
croc tears.sour grapes.spilled milk.what more?JVP took training for jungle
politics and ended up in concrete jungle. They are in the wrong place with wrong people taking wrong decision seeing wrong dreams.living and dying
both has become a burden to the comrades.good guys but need long wait.
Hit the nail on its head Muza !
There is no democracy in SL now.
JVP it is you who aided and suported SLFP to “Destroy the Democracy” in Srilanka to attack UNP, but what happend was opposite. Now SLFP kicked out you from the “Political Field” and you have to start from the “Bottom” to survive in the “Political Field”. Now you have understood who are Double Tounged SLFP`s as they did from SWRD`s time.
Since SWRD this party has been cheating people and took the wrong path. Never contributed anythign towards country’s development.
JVP got to do something since UNP is silent. People will gather around JVP gradually.
MR slowly but surely going towards dictatorship. He must be stoped!
JVP should remember what happened to their men in the 90s (white van). His Excellency is much more capable. Carried out genocide last year against the Tamils in the North. Army is hungry for more work. Good time to carry out the same against the JVP, if they don’t support His Excellency MR.
So now you want to go back to your original path of terrorism?
what happened to your uncle, When is he going to re-instate the Maruwin
We are sending him to Saudi to be beheaded.
Time is running out for many people indeed. Now the Ltte is out.Next will be UNP,
it’s almost done !Then it will be JVP for sure. Then it could be SLMC, or Muslims,
then who is left ?..oh ..the Indian Tamils. It’s so simple to finish them too.
Because MR has the majority , constitution ( amended or not ) and the super Indian power & superior Chinese support, and some blessings of IMF, etc., etc.,
So the game is theirs , at least for a foreseable time. Guys who voted, not voted, prevented from voting, everyone have no choice or guts but just go through the agony and try to survive, Let the lucky ones enjoy the life.Ah.. What a pity in the name of demo”crazy”
There is no way one could stop the passage of this amendment. In order that there is fair play in this matter, I would suggest the Opposition to propose an amendment to the effect that any incumbent President could contest the election any number of times subject to the election being held under the supervision of an Election Commission (include the clauses which are applicable in the Indian Election Commission). This will ensure free and fair elections. If the Govt. refuses to accept this amendment the only other alternative is for the entire Opposition to WALK OUT in protest. Let the bill be passed without the participation of the Opposition, which would indicate to the public and to the international community that the government bull dozed through.
Haha, that’s rich coming from the JVP
Now the time for people to forget 1971 and 1989 resurrection and rally behind JVP. They have proved they are not after money and cannot be bought over. I personally know how genuine and simple they are. I had problem with the policies of JVP during 2005 to 2007 but later truth emerged that it was a problem of few culprits / black sheeps.
go jvp go , you can make a bater country
Time is indeed running for the survival of JVP…..I can still remember the few Mud pools they dug(when they held ministerial portfolios), under a development theme name ” Dahasak Wavu” (thousand irrigation bunds)
JVP you deserve everything MR throws at you, you are the evil of our NATION who twisted the words of all that is DEMOCRACY. You guys were always against the DEMOCRACY to prove you warned the village people not to vote. How dare you guys go to the road and say DEMOCRACY is at stake when you guys didn’t accept it then. I hope that MR will carry the legacy of MADAM SIRIMAVO & PREMADASA and kill the remaining JVP’ers. As per the amendment well I don’t think the majority cares who stays in power because no leader in the recent past has done anything for the country. All have done for them selves only.
None seems to understand the value of JVP, they have blocked many unfriendly moves by ruling regimes in parliament & outside parliament, where others had dared to do many dumb asses do not know, nor any journalist done & investigative journalism about their good side, The critics always repeat their history of violence nothing else.
