Opposition MPs Back Government

UNP MP Earl Gunasekara has reportedly taken a decision to back the proposed reforms to the constitution next week. In doing this, he will be voting with the Government, despite being a member of the Opposition.  He told the media that the Working Committee members were already aware of his decision, and added he was ready to face the consequences of his actions. Gunasekara added that the time was ripe for the Opposition to stop opposing everything put forward by the Government.

Gunasekara will probably not be alone. UNP MP Abdul Cader said he thought the proposed 18th amendment ‘very good.’ He added that many improvements had been made within the country since the war victory, and so he saw no reason to go against the President. Cader has frequently voted with the Government side during Parliamentary sessions, despite being an Opposition member. The UNP has said they will take disciplinary action against Cader in this regard. However, they are yet to do so.

Meanwhile, SLMC Head Rauf Hakeem also announced he would be supporting the Government’s proposed constitutional reforms earlier this week.

Cader must have been bought. Earl is wealthy so can’t be bought, unless it’s a massive amount. I wonder what made him support the dictator? Any ideas?

Why were they allowed to contest as UNF candidates at first place? Seems that there is a serious problem with the selection process.

Disciplinary action should have been taken against Cader long ago. Inefficiency on the part of the UNP administration in delaying action causes serious consequences. These somersaulters should be dealt with promptly. It is because of the delay in taking against them that the UNP is suffering.

So the bankrupt UNP is giving a free hand to MR when a share is given from the seized LTTE funds.

In Future there wont be any inquiry, nothing will be disclosed to the Masses under the pretext of state security.
