  1. No wonder he too had thought of supporting the President because if not for his leadership Sri Lanka would have been under the terrorists for ever, with suidice bombers walking around freely. People should admire the Rajapkses for not giving into the pressure brought by terror backers to give in to terrorists. Only bankrupt politicians still hang around with the UNP. Also the UNP is in shambles now without proper leadership. Samaraweera,P.A

Yes、Mr Samaraweera is correct. Most wise decision at present.

Only traitors will support an amendment which paves the way for a dictatorship. JR’s constitution which gave so much power to the Executive, at least limited it to 2 terms. This man, having realized what power really means, does not want any such limits and may end up being ‘Mugabe of Zimbabwe’!

The 17th amendment which curbed the powers of the Executive through the Constitutional Council will no longer function impartially, as the 18th amendment will clip its wings by giving the Executive the sole right to appoint its members. Then, why do we need a Constitutional Council now? We might as well allow the Executive to wield the “Deli Pihiya” in the way he so desires!

The 18th Amendment will make a ‘mockery of ‘democracy’. With the traitors in the UNP giving strength to the hands of this egocentric and insensitive President, we have only the Gods above to stop this folly.

  4. Sri Lankan

While all this is happening, Ranil is busy in India.

Doing what? Meeting up with Chennai politicians. The ones who are hell bent to do everything in their power to bring Sri Lanka down.

No wonder people hate the UNP.

If the bill contains provision for the establishment independent commissions like the Election Commission similar to the one existing in India, a Police Commission, a Judicial Commission, Public Service Commission, the decision to vote with the Government is perfectly alright. Otherwise, I don’t understand why this heroic Member of Parliament from Badulla should vote with the Government.

you mean presidential commissions? that’s what we have all along, the commissions are appointed by the president and the reports are given to him to be kept under lock. What do you expect from a man who enjoys being called the “gift of heaven”?

    • Concerned Citizen

Deen, please read my comment above. The Constitutional Council with the independent commissions came into being with the 17th amendment during the UNP regime. This President, through the 18th amendment, will clip its wings. You and all the others who think otherwise have been brainwashed to the hilt!

In my hindsight, I have this feeling that the Prez will act with an Iorn fist against corruption after taking Oaths in November.

For better or for the worse, we must give him a strong hand with the hope that he will put things right. Lets have hope..

If we could have suffered for 30 years, lets give a strong hand to the Prez for (06) years…………….
People’s power can always upstage a powerful dictator or a leader.

We all believe in an Almighty God. he will take care at the opportune time.
LETS BE BOLD AND HAVE FAITH IN THE PREZ TO DELIVER.

There is an important difference; Sri Lankans of today seem to be affraid of even demonstrating on the streets. As long as then President have an iron grip of the police and the other armed forces there will be no chanse for a people led rebellion. And there could have been cuase for this already since almost nothing have been done for the people (at least from the government) since the end of the war. Had it not been for the aid given by UN, EU and individual countries, nothing at all would have been accomplished. There has been a number of high profile multi million projects financed by foreign countries and the World Bank, but so far, how have it helped ordinary people?
The freedom of opinion, speach and media is under continous threats, food prices are going up, so does the general cost of living. But the government allowe itself to spend enormous amounts of money on ridicoulus happenings, partys, tamashas and expensive cars for themselves from abroad. But do the people dare to protest? No way! Not even when they are presented with the 18th amendement which will give the president even bigger powers to act according to his own will, and not according to the peoples will.
And it is done by bribing oppossition members and partys with money and posts. So much for the democray in Sri Lanka, today only giving freedom to act according to his own wished to the president and not strengthening or improving the situation for the average people.

nothing will change until people change themselves no matter who’s in power
They will starve to build a house,a very luxury one only to sit in it to eat rice and
sambol. They are ready to starve for show off. They want to be in luxury even by
torturing themselves.Do you want to call it luxury? They should wake up to
reality. They should strive hard for better life, walls should not be built at the
cost of the stomach.Same is true with ports and airports, roads and bridges.
    Developments? yes.Sufferings? with a limit.

  9. shame to say that this man is a Thomian, your father will wake up from the grave for the work you did for Sarath fonseka and now……………..just get out that is the last election you won from that bastian, shameless bastard
