“Traitorous” – Premadasa
UNP MP Sajith Premadasa speaking to the Leader shortly after the 18th amendment was passed said that the actions of the UNP MPs who had voted with the Government were “traitorous.”
“They have totally betrayed the UNP and the party supporters of their districts… they are friends of mine, but I’m afraid I have to call them traitors. There’s no other word [to describe them],” Premadasa said.
He added that he had called all those who were rumoured to cross over to the Government side and attempted to dissuade them.
Speaking of allegations made by some MPs that the defectors were offered bribes and even Cabinet positions, Premadasa surmised, “If one decides to to forego the trust and faith placed in them by him/her by the thousands of their supporters, there could have been something given. However I was not privy to the secret meetings.”

I think Ranil is helping you to clean up the party before you take over the leadership of the UNP. Please do not take them back once you become the leader as those who crossed over cannot be trusted for a cent. They must have thought that UNP will never come to power as far as Ranil is there. Therefore, they have left on their own accord for personal gains, Money and Power, (MP)
Looks like the Leader and Sirasa have already chosen the new UNP leader. Now the brainwashing and lies will start.
With friends like this Sajith who needs enemies. I agree with Buddhadasa – start from now looking for people who are trustworthy and honorable ; they can usher in a new era for the UNP. Good luck
Did the UNP and Sajith vote? If they did not they are real traitors of demcracy.
the actions of the UNP ers who supported the dictatorship 18 th amendment should be condemned,,, this also an eye opener for the UNPers as they have a serial looser as their leader and UNPers have realised there is no hope for them to ever come to power under this serial looser Ranil. Never under any UNP leader of the past has this major party had cross over like when Ranil has been leader,,, this alos a sign of a weak opposition leader who cannot offer leadership to the opposition let alone his own party,, Ranil please get out at least now!! u bloody serial looser,,,may be Ranil should be investigated for match fixing of election results ie UNP sure to loose
Sajith or Ranil, the UNP had nothing against the 18-A, That’s why they walked out. Had they stayed on, some of might have wanted to vote for it. A few openly did vote for it. History can’t be changed. The UNP will one day regret this day, just like they are regretting now introducing this post 30 years ago. Short sightedness cost UNP historically, but it is still continuing.
Ruwan,
I believe that you use your bum and not the brains when you write to blame others for the sins of Rajapakse. Or you are a utterly dishonest and selfish cheat.
sajith if you love the country that much why didnot you go to parliment and talk and vote against the 18th amandment now you are showing off to people OR DESAPREMIYA WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE WAR AGAINST LTTE WEE CAN REMEMBER YOUR FATHERS HELP TO LTTE AND YOUR SILENCE DURING THE WAR YOU LIKE YOUR MOTHER POWER HUNGRY
anura j Do you have a brain ? Do you kill a person when some body help
you? Dont you know LTTE killed Premadasa. He helped LTTE to fight Indian army which Sunami Rajapaksa also wanted Indian army out of Sri Lanka.
I hope you will use your brains (if you have one) in future when you comment.
Well said bro
We need a 19th amendment to ban elected members of one party crossing over to the govt!
That is the one thing SL people must change…people vote For party representative
when they crossover they should lose the parliamentary seat……MR wont do it… his entire UPFA base on Ex UNPers……that is why he is treating RW really well.as long as RW lead UNP, MR lead the country.I can not believe that there is no son of SL to get rid of RW……..who will be a national hero!!!
I AM A RANIL SUPPORTER.HE IS MY FAVOURITE IN UNP.BUT IT IS NOW CLEAR THAT RANIL IS NOT SUITABLE TO LEAD THE UNP.IT IS BETTER HIM TO STAY ASIDE AND HELP THE PARTY UNDER SAJITH P OR RAVI K.OTHERWISE.
WIKIPEDIA HISTORY — YEAR 2080.
The United National Party, which was often referred to as the UNP (Sinhala: එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂය (pronounced Eksath Jathika Pakshaya)), (Tamil: ஐக்கிய தேசியக் கட்சி), was a political party in Sri Lanka from 1948 – 2010. It was the main opposition party in Sri Lanka and was headed by a muppet named Ranil Wick. His deputy was a spineless stooge named Karu. The UNP was considered to have right-leaning, pro-capitalist policies but the party collapsed in the year 2010 due to infighting and lack of leadership.
The incumbent president’s Great Grand father known as MR was instrumental in its collapse when he bought over the members of the UNP that made Sri Lanka a one party system in 2010.
The Head Quarters of the UNP used to be located where the giant statue of MR now stands. Following the collapse of the UNP most of its members either committed suicide or were absorbed by MR into his party.
could not have put it better myself BRAVO
Boycott should be treated as surrender. I don’t agree with TNA normally but in this case I am 100% with them when they say that UNP action was purely gutless and shameful.
Every UNP supporters are lose confidence in that party. RW is the one take responsible for the loss, since he behave like muppet leader during his time of leadership. Now the supporters must try to find a strong opposition leader who could work for the people and protect the country from devils.
Ranil must explain to the country, why he must remain in UNP as its leader.
Taxpayers money is not only feeding ministers and the president,it’s also
feeding the opposition leader. How strongly has he opposed what’s not good
for the country, must be judged.Where do his actions have taken UNP must be questioned and answered.UNP must hate time wasting.Paba didn’t want to
waste her time sitting with a group of people who can not convince her that
she can one day deliver.Lakshman can not fool mahiyangana people with
stories that will not put them to sleep, any longer.Tell the country,so far how
many MPs have deserted the party and what have you done to stop further
frustrations. There’s no point of levelling useless allegations of money involvements to tarnish other’s image. What do you people want from them? selling their assets and putting them in your coffer? They can not let you play with their future.Blame Ranil.
I’m telling the truth. Why should I be waiting for moderation.Release it.
Muza, Don’t worry, we know what you say, let them keep your piece to produce their own authentic articles.
There is no point now in talking, we have to learn to live with the 18_A. If the SLFP led coalition doesn’t do anything about it, there is nobody else to do anything either.
Ruwan,we are a strong democracy.I also should say emphatically that we
have witnessed in the past taht all SLFP led govts have made every effort
in their power to avenge on UNP by any means available to them. That’s
their top of priorities. The scale of doing this is getting bigger and bigger
with the passage of time.Touch your heart and tell us,idea of development
and this destructive behaviour going hand in hand? Explain the brighter
side of this 18 A in such a MAD RUSH.WHY SUCH A HURRY? Clearly RW
is no threat to any power.SF inside their own den.He has not yet started
his next term and the next dish is beig ordered and it’s such an emergency that he can’t wait. One thing is clear.Srilankans are getting
ready to put up with real time losses.
No country in the world can survive with this sort of power in politics and thriving corruption, it will be great for the short time for few with power and who money is the only thing in their mind but can’t last too long.
When Karu J Joined MR what action UNP took. When he came back his former position was offered (Deputy Leader) as if there were no one suitable from the ex co. From that day people understood that UNP is a bankrupt party. Taking Karu back is acceptable to me but taking him as the Deputly leader was a great mistake done by R A – NIL. (Rate Anagathayata – NIL)
You father was corrupt to the bone bro, and now you coming back for seconds. At lease MR has done something you and your cronies and traitors only could dream of
will see how long this last
The “for the party” slogan is, among others, a big curse for UNP. Honestly or not, MR clan uses the “for the country” slogan.
For most people, a party is not something so holy to defend to death. For-the-party slogan doesn’t appeal to them, and for them party changers are not “traitors”. These stuff only works for the die-hard supporters, and they are anyway in, so you are simply preaching to the converted.
If you want to sell a product and make money, what will you tell the customer: “I want to make money” or “this product is good”? Even the most uneducated businessmen know the answer.
UNP HAD SOME GOOD IDEAS AND IMPLIMENTED PARTIALY,FREE TRADE FREE ECONOMY AND DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM ETC.BUT DIDN’T DO THE JOB COMPLETELY WHILE IT HAD ALL THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO DURING THE JR TIME.NOW OTHERS ARE DOING THEIR JOKES SINCE THE UNP DIDN’T DO THE RIGHT THINGS DURING THEIR TIMES.
WHY DIDN’T PRIVATISE THE ECONOMY FROM CORRUPT,INEFFICENT AND GOVERNMENT CONTROL ECONOMY,WHICH MADE LANKA TO POOR AND POORER?.
UNP NEVER HAD DEDICATED LEADERS WITH FAR SIGHT.THEY ALL DID LITTLE BIT HERE AND THERE ONLY.
SRI LANKANS NEED TO WAIT VERY LONG TIME TO HAVE FAR SIGHTED,INTELEGENT AND BRAVE LEADERS TO DEVELP THE COUNTRY AND MAKE IT’S PEOPLE RICH.
