Vice Chancellor’s Love Phobia Causes Uproar In Sri Jayewardenepura University
- Six Female Students Sent For Virginity Test

Students of the Sri Jayewardenepura University claim that the Vice Chancellor, N. L. A. Karunaratne sent six girls for a virginity test. They say that the Vice Chancellor’s phobias are making their campus life miserable.
“The girls were talking to boys on August 25 at about 6.30 p.m. as it often happens in campus life, when they were forcibly put into the campus ambulance by security guards and taken away to the Kalubowila Hospital for a virginity test. The Vice Chancellor’s love phobia is very unusual. He has broken down most of the summer huts, he has destroyed all the benches and girls are not allowed to talk to boys in the campus. There are cameras everywhere to ascertain whether girls are talking to boys,” said Convenor, Inter University Student Federation, Upul Premaratne.
Alleging that even the smallest act that displeases the Vice Chancellor results in suspension, students said that sending the six girls to the Kalubowila Hospital after chiding the six boys and sending them away has caused anger and frustration in the campus.
“Some of the girls in the campus are married and there are young mothers here too. If checking their virginity will be done at random on the whims and fancies of the Vice Chancellor it will create both a problem and embarrassment to these young people,” said Premaratne.
According to a former employee of the Campus the Vice Chancellor has allegedly on one occasion intruded on boys and girls in close conversation and forced their parents to get them ‘married off.’ A student alleged that letters have been obtained from some couples vouching that they will get married.
“Sixty students have been suspended within two months. Notices and posters have been prohibited. We are not even allowed to have a Bodhi Pooja in the evening. There are cameras everywhere and if a group of seniors are seen in the company of first year students, then the seniors get suspended. This trend is cramping our campus culture,” said disheartened students. “Everything has to stop by 6 p.m. and five people are not allowed to even sit together,” they said.
“He promised in the presence of the Minister that the suspension of 52 students will be removed, but no sooner the Minister left 40 students were suspended again,” alleged the students.
Convenor of the Inter University Student Federation also noted that it is cause for concern that the Vice Chancellor allegedly strolls into the girls’ hostel after 7 p.m to look for ‘adu paadu’ (needs). “Recently the Vice Chancellor stalled his car alongside two students who were wearing caps and ordered them to remove the caps stating that they were ‘rastiyadu’ caps and thereafter shouted ‘duwapan’ to the students,” alleged Premaratne.
“Recently a student who could not bring his ID had to undergo the most humiliating punishment,” alleged Convenor Premaratne. All students of the Sri Jayewardenepura University are over 18 years of age.
“This is the greatest insult to all womankind. Checking on whether a girl is a virgin or not does not come within the purview of the duties of the Vice Chancellor. It borders on mental perversion,” said a former Vice Chancellor of the University when contacted by The Sunday Leader.
Sources at the Kalubowila Hospital when contacted by The Sunday Leader said that they were not in a position to divulge sensitive information regarding personal tests.
When The Sunday Leader telephoned the office of Vice Chancellor N.L.A Karunaratne to get his side of the story on Thursday afternoon, we were told that he was not in. When we somehow acquired his mobile number and called him on Friday he said, “Madam, I am busy at an interview board.” When we tried to call him thereafter repeatedly he insisted he was busy, finally leaving his phone unanswered.
Determining Virginity
A virginity test is the practice and process of inspecting the genitalia of girls and women to determine if they are sexually chaste. It is based on the false assumption that a woman’s hymen can only be torn as a result of sexual intercourse.
I know well that most of the serious parts of the news published in the paper are really lies. For example,
1. According to university information no any single student has been sent to hospital for virginity tests.
2. It is a real lie that cameras have been set everywhere in the University. The only one camera is seen outside the VC’s office for security purpose.
3. The statement appears in the paper that the VC has broken down most of the summer huts and destroyed all the benches’ is also a pure lie.
4. Another lie: girls are not allowed to talk to boys in the campus.
Most of the sections in the Newspaper are purposely made lies.
A responsible newspaper read by people in Sri Lanka it is great sin to misguide people like this. I am also reader of this newspaper. But, I suspect about other news items of the paper and take a decision whether to continue to purchase.
It is my request please do not create and enlarge news. Let people know the truth. Do your politics in alternative ways. Do not insult the innocent girls and boys of the university. Make sure whether your news are correct before you publish it. Be scientific and base on facts because these are news items, not short stories, fictions, etc.

This is a great measure.
We all Sri Lankans pay for their studies.No other country in the world do that.
If these students want us to sepnd our money to educate them, they must behave.
I agree with the VC they do not sit and talk they do not have limitd. I have been in this university.Those who have been inside this uni knows the reality.
we do not talk about young mothers… or anyother respectable soul, we talk about girls who behave like whores!
University is definitely not the place for them… we as a country can not afford to give higher education to those who do not want to learn but do everything else.

I can not believe what I read? Has the VC gone nuts?? I was under the impression that SL is democratic country where adults (over 18, and certainly Univ. students) are free to live free lives with responsibility!!
If this Marvin Silva style no-brain chancellor had a brain of a street beggar, he should have asked this virginity test be done by non other than the guardians of those young women that is their parents not the vulturous MBBS Sri Lankan doctors who have accumulated wealth by fleecing and preying on the sick and weak.

We all know that JVPers are the sole enemy for the functioning of the university. This news item proves us how they tell lies. We all know that there is no problem of speaking with girls. And we know that there is no way to control it. JVPers are now trying to start their regaining campaign from the SJP. But, it has become a dream due to present VC. Their attempt now is to anyhow expel the VC. However, they are playing with the dignity of the undergraduates, graduates and the university. Please, Udul Premaratna, don’t do such such politics now. VC is a thaliban who practice Shariya law. But if VS is serious about checking out the naughty ladies he should appoint me for inspection.
Udul premarathna was a Dental student of university of Peradeniya adn he had failed his final exams distryoing the contribution of the innconr\ent people of the Sri Lankans. there is no such union(“ANTHARAYA”) in Sri Lanka as a legal Union. UGC also published this news already.
This fellows have recieved funds from CIA America for distroying our pride, Culture, Country for achive their target to export USA Drugs and wepons to our Country. Udul should shy of his activities bitrayed the entire country for his pocket.
Udul and his group is very few in the University and other majority of the students aceept the activities for the development of the University.
The innocent girls were cheated by this group promissing to get employment Oppertunities for them asking sexually relationship as thier help with thw interest of the girls or not. (RAPPING).
Many of this type of incidence were happend in the Science Faculty area after 6.00 or 7.00 pm. Protecting the girls VC had Published a notice not to go to the science Faculty after 6.30pm. This is the main reson for publishing this type of news. But as the parants we should appriciate the VC for taking action for protecting our Daughters.
Vice-Chancellor should not comment of this news because of this type of Time-Eaters(“Kala kanni”) can create anything that is coming to their toung.

This story has no truth in it. This has something to do with Antharaya.
First of all let me say that i have no idea whether this is true or not, as i have no first hand information.
But please remember this:
NEVER, EVER, EVER trust what these student union leaders say, they are probably the main reason for the decline of our university system.
That being said, the VC must have serious issues if this is true!

I wonder… this incident is reported to have occured on 25th August.. what were the affected parties and the ‘Anthare’ were doing upto now??? why this accusation now?
I stay near to the Campus.. and I see campus girls and boys talking freely at every hour of the day.. so.. what is the truth here? either the VC or the Anthare is lying…
may be he is trying to restore decipline, specialy raging culture, its the worst and got to be stoped, when a person try to clean up , usualy the ugly ones throw the same mud on the person who cleans, any way in gost town every stupity is possible
What about ragging? Is VC not in war path with inhuman ragging activities (mostly led by JVP related student bodies), before he declares war against very human activity of love and sex. Again, I am just going by the news item and it could well be true that this is JVP propaganda against the VC.
If there is an iota of truth in this story, I have to say that I am not sure what to make out of this story. If female students were sexually assaulted and were victims of a sexual crime, and if they made complaints about such a crime, then doing such investigation could be within the legal rights of the law enforcement for evidence purposes. However, if the said VC arbitrary decided to forcibly check the virginity of several female students, then that would account for a sexual assault itself.
Someone commented as a “father” above said that in Sri Lankan legal system it is within rights of Sri Lankan law enforcement institutions to arrest “couples” and produce them before courts, and if needed send (the female?) to a medical test. Really? I mean Really? Can the Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities could legally do that? Can someone who knows about the law here clarify if we are in a such messed up legal system, such that it is a crime for consenting adults to be together and adage in activities of sexual nature?
Does this “father” believe that consensual sexual activities between young adults is more obscene than hitting a student with a computer monitor and killing him?
How come nobody is firing this man? This is a violation of human rights, who gave this man the authority to be the sex police? This is a disgrace to the Sri Lankan academic community and to us academics living abroad.
